APRIL 28, 2019

FROM FATHER RICK

Dear Friends,

HAPPY EASTER!

Today is the Octave Day of Easter. The Easter Season is the Season of Initiation into the Body of Christ: the season of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. This is the season of renewal for all of us in our life in Christ. We begin this feast of initiation with the renewal of our own Baptismal Promises at the Easter Vigil and our Easter Sunday Masses (along with Ava Marie’s Baptism at the 11:00 Mass)—a sign of our willingness to work to bring about the reign of God in the world. We continue with that motif in the Rite of Sprinkling with Easter Water at all the Sunday Masses of Easter.

Throughout the season we will celebrate as a Sunday Assembly the Baptisms of our newest mem-bers and we will celebrate the First Communion of our second graders on April 28 at 11:00 am Mass. The Confirmation of our adolescents will be celebrated with Bishop Robert Reed at 11:00 am Mass on Sunday, May 5. On May 29 and 30, we will celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension with 6:00 pm Mass on Wednesday, followed by Holy Day Supper, and 12:10 pm Mass on Thursday. Then on Pentecost Sunday, June 9, we will bring this 50-day feast to fulfillment and completion as we gather as a parish family at a SINGLE celebration of the Eucharist at 10:00 am. We will continue the celebration with our fifteenth annual Parish Pentecost Celebration here on our property. More details will be forthcoming over the next few weeks.

Thank You!

On this, the Second Sunday of Easter, in the name of the parish community

FROM POPE FRANCIS

Pope at Regina Coeli: “The risen Jesus walks beside us” The role of women as the first witness of the Resurrection: before praying the Regina Coeli, which takes the place of the Angelus during the Easter season, the Pope reflected on the Gospel of the day for Easter Monday, in which St Matthew takes us back to the empty tomb of Jesus. Women the first witnesses “The women, full of awe and joy, are leaving in a hurry to go and bring the news to the disciples; and at that moment Jesus presents Himself before them,” said Pope Francis. The Lord tells them not to be afraid and encourages them to go and announce to their friends what has happened. “All the Gospels emphasize the role of women, Mary of Magdala and the others, as the first witnesses of the resurrection,” said the Pope. They were the first to meet the Risen Christ “and to bring the message that He was alive.” We too called to be witnesses Pope Francis said the words of Jesus addressed to the women resound for us today too: “Do not be afraid; go and proclaim...We too are called to meet Him personally and to become His heralds and witnesses,” he said. “The risen Jesus walks beside us,” continued Pope Francis, “He manifests Him-self to those who call on Him and who love Him.” We meet Jesus, first of all, in prayer, said the Pope, “but also in simple joys lived with faith and gratitude,” sharing moments of friendship and welcome, or even contemplating nature. The words of the Angels Pope Francis reminded us of the words spoken to the women by the Angels at the empty tomb on that first day after the Sabbath: “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, He is risen.” Christ’s resurrection was “humanly unthinkable,” said the Pope. He described it as “the most shocking event in human history.” But the Resurrection of Jesus is also proof of the victory of God's Love over sin and death, he said. It is what gives our hope of life “a rock-sold foundation.”

I wish you a Happy and Holy Easter Season, Fr. Rick

Stewardship Reflection

“Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’” (John 20:21)

Peace – the first gift of the risen Lord. Just as Jesus sent the apostles out into the world, so too, He sends us. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to be grateful and generous. Look for op-portunities to share His peace, not only within our local parish boundaries, but outside of them as well. In giving, we receive the peace of Jesus Christ.

On behalf of our priests, especially our senior priests who have been here for decades, we thank you for your generous support of last week’s special Easter Collection. Our priests in good standing have always answered our calls. Like us, they are troubled by the current events taking place in the Church, yet they are always there for us. Thank you for being there for them.

Please follow us on Facebook or at clergytrust.org to learn more about the ways in which Boston priests answer the call every day. Thank you for your prayers and support.

Funds from this special collection are managed by the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust—an independent-ly managed trust with a majority lay board of trustees. The funds are used for the sole benefit of active and senior priests in good standing.

Question of the Week: Second Sunday of Easter

Theme: Receive the Holy Spirit

Breaking Open the Word Suggested faith sharing text: Today’s Gospel

Step One: Listen to the Word As you hear this reading, what words or phrases strike you? What in this reading touch-es your heart? What lingers in your memory?

Step Two: Look into Your Life Question for Children: Jesus appeared to the disciples even though they were afraid and locked in the closed room. How can you show Jesus to another person this week by how you act?

Question for Youth: Thomas didn’t believe be-cause he hadn’t seen Jesus with his own eyes. How hard is it for you to believe in God with-out being able to see God? How do you see God in the words and actions of others?

Question for Adults: Jesus said: “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.” Give one example of how you will show your belief in Jesus this week - how you are being sent forth.

SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR NEXT WEEK: THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles 5:27-32, 40b-41

When the captain and the court officers had brought the apostles in and made them stand before the Sanhedrin, the high priest questioned them, “We gave you strict orders, did we not, to stop teaching in that name? Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and want to bring this man’s blood upon us.” But Peter and the apostles said in reply, “We must obey God rather than men. The God of our ancestors raised Jesus, though you had him killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him at his right hand as leader and savior to grant Israel repentance and for-giveness of sins. We are witnesses of these things, as is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.”

The Sanhedrin ordered the apostles to stop speaking in the name of Jesus, and dismissed them. So they left the presence of the Sanhedrin, rejoicing that they had been found worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name.

A reading from the Book of Revelation 5:11-14

I, John, looked and heard the voices of many angels who surrounded the throne and the living creatures and the el-ders. They were countless in number, and they cried out in a loud voice: “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to re-ceive power and riches, wisdom and strength, honor and glory and blessing.” Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, everything in the universe, cry out: “To the one who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor, glory and might, forever and ever.” The four living creatures an-swered, “Amen, ” and the elders fell down and worshiped.

+ A reading from the holy Gospel according to John 21:1-19

At that time, Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself in this way. Together were Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee’s sons, and two others of his disciples. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We also will come with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. When it was already dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore; but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, “Children, have you caught anything to eat?” They answered him, “No.” So he said to them, “Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.” So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish. So the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad, and jumped into the sea. The other disciples came in the boat, for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards, dragging the net with the fish. When they climbed out on shore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you just caught.” So Simon Peter went over and dragged the net ashore full of one hundred fifty-three large fish. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come, have breakfast.” And none of the dis-ciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they realized it was the Lord. Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them, and in like manner the fish. This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to his disciples after being raised from the dead.

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” He then said to Simon Peter a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Tend my sheep.” Jesus said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that Jesus had said to him a third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me.”
