ECFE is a unique parent-child education program for all families with children ages birth to kindergarten. Weekly classes have three parts:

1. Learning togetherDuring the first half-hour of class, choose from many planned activities designed just for you and your child to do together. Learn new ideas for activities to do at home.

2. Purposeful play for childrenThe remaining portion of class is designed for children to learn through play with their peers. Children benefit from the guidance of a licensed early childhood teacher and experienced educational assistant. The goal is to help children develop a healthy self-concept and a love for learning.

Some ECFE classes will have parents and children remain together during classtime and then each week work towards separation by closing the door between classrooms. A one-way window between rooms provides access for parent observation. Other classes remain together the entire time indicated by (ns) below.

3. Connecting with othersWhile children are learning with their teachers, parents join together in an informal group setting for a discussion time led by a licensed parent educator. The group discusses topics and shares parenting ideas while learning more about their child’s development. Everyone benefits from feeling connected to other parents with similar experiences!

Location: All ECFE parent-child classes are held at the Early Childhood Education Center, located at 5241 Shoreline Dr., Mound, (in the Stonegate Plaza).

For more information about ECFE, call the Early Childhood Office at 952.491.8048.

Early Childhood Census Counting every child birth-5 years is important. Accurate data help the school district qualify for state and federal funding. Census data also helps us plan for future educational needs. If you have just moved into the area, or had a new child, please complete a census form. Download a form from westonka.k12.mn.us/forms.html, or call Leila Marcy at 952.491.8024.

Appropriate PraiseAn adult discussion night

“You’re so smart!” Doesn’t everyone say something like that to their child, thinking that they are reinforcing an act or hoping for continued growth? According to recent research by Dr. Carol Dweck, praise can backfire. This is documented in the book Nurture Shock by Bronson and Merryman which challenges our thinking about praising children. Join us as we learn more about this research and talk about how to praise our children so that they are motivated to give more effort.

Early Childhood Screening Early Childhood Screening is recommended for all children when they reach age three years. Its purpose is to affirm a child’s development and identify any early needs for educational assistance or community resources. It is also a state requirement for kindergarten enrollment. This free screening involves a review of all growth and development; plus immunizations, hearing and potential problems with vision (does not replace a full eye exam). Your child will play a series of games/activities with the screener, followed by a playtime with other staff. The screener then shares a summary of the results with you.

Options for scheduling an appointment:

• Sign up on-line at communityed.westonka.k12.mn.us and choose a date and time using the class numbers/letters listed below.• Call the Early Childhood Office at 952.491.8048 and we will set an appointment with you• Using the school census, the District may also call to schedule an appointment.

If there are questions or concerns before their child turns age three, call 952.491.8030. Additional questions may be directed to the early childhood coordinator at 952.491.8044.

Unified SportsUnified Sports is an inclusive program that combines individuals with intellectual disabilities and partners without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It’s a great program for students to be active leaders in; students participate next to their peers in Special Education, parents or teachers can coach but it’s also a perfect opportunity for a high school senior to help coach and get volunteer service hours.

Unified Sports is a very minimal time requirement, we just ask that teams practice once a week for an hour during the season and attend the State Tournament at the end of that season. Minimum age to participate is 8 years old.

Please contact Joey Schugel at 952-491-8047 or [email protected].

• Support the student, giving them the assurance that someone is there to help if s/he has a need, so s/he can relax and enjoy the class.

• Get to know the student, have fun together.

• If the student gets overwhelmed or frustrated, help to calm down or take a break to re-group and then get back into the activity.

• Ensure the child’s safety (supervise the activity to make sure the child does not leave the premises, be aware of any risks per parent instruction).

• Call the parent/caregiver for early pick-up if things are not working out as planned.
