Pastor’s Corner Join us for the Lent & Easter Season! We begin our 40 day Lenten Journey on February 17th, Ash Wednesday. Even in the midst of the pandemic we are called to focus on our spiritual self.

Why 40 days?

The number 40 shows up often in the Bible, usually in contexts dealing with judgment, testing, probation or trial—from the story of Noah and rain for 40 days. The New Testament begins with Christ spending 40 days fasting in the desert before entering into his public ministry (Mt 4:1-11). Catholics imitate Christ by spending 40 days in spiritual discipline before the celebration of Christ's Resurrection, the triumph over sin and death.

40 days? Every Sunday is a commemoration of Christ's resurrection and as a feast day on which fasting was inappropriate. Christians fasted from Monday to Saturday (six days) during six weeks and from Wednesday to Saturday (four days) in the preceding week, thus making up the number of 40 days.

Stations of the Cross every Friday at 7:30pm Every Friday in Lent we will gather in the Church to journey with Christ in the Way of the Cross.

Reconciliation (Confession) Whether you have been away for a long time or obtain these graces regularly, this will be one of the greatest blessings you’ll receive while still on this earth. We’ll be offering opportunities for Reconciliation every Saturday at 4 pm and other times which will be published online and in the bulletin.

Give it up for Lent Giving up something we like during Lent can be a reminder of the importance of sacrifice in our lives. Every time we refrain from eating candy, going shopping, watching television, drinking alcohol, or doing something else we enjoy, we have an opportunity to express our desire to love and draw near to God.

Guidelines for Lent Catholics are called to abstain from eating meat every Friday during Lent. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of 18 and 59. Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be harmful are not obliged to fast, but should perform some other act of penance or charity.

Do something positive Lenten penance need not be only a question of abstaining from food or drink. Now is the time to begin or reinforce something positive in your life, like regular prayer or study and prayer with Scripture. Whenever our

St. James Social and Sanitizing Protocols

In compliance with the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health Order of the Health Officer, protocols for social distancing and sanitizing have been created for the parish office and Masses celebrated at the main church and the St. James School field.

A binder containing the protocol specific to each facility can be found in the following locations: in the parish office reception area, at the church in the parking lot entrance vestibule, and on the table at the entrance to the St. James School field (during Masses only).

Q: The Catechism refers to it as: “...an epitome of the whole Gospel.”

What is it that can be characterized as the epitome of the whole Gospel?

A: The epitome, the summary, the embodiment, and the expression of faith to which the catechism refers can be found amid the decades of - The Rosary.

Catechism Paragraph #971 reads: “The Church’s devotion to the Blessed Virgin is intrinsic to Christian worship. The Church rightly honors the Blessed Virgin with special devotion. From the most ancient times the Blessed Virgin has been honored with the title of ‘Mother of God,’ to those whose protection the faithful fly in all their dangers and needs...”

In these days of dangers, needs, and exceptional challenges we indeed fly to Marian prayer, with rosary hopefully and confidently grasped. Ave Marias can be said individually; within our family; safely and responsibly spaced apart from other devotees; and we can even fly to the rosary in virtual unison at many sites online.

Pope Francis, speaking at a Wednesday General Audience last October spoke about Marian prayer:

“Even today, in this time of the pandemic, it is necessary to hold the rosary in our hands and pray for us, our loved ones, and all people.”

Our St. James choir sings the familiar devotional strains of the Ave Maria, Schubert‘s version that originated as part of his Opus 52 that centered on a composition called Ellen’s Third Song, drawn from Sir Walter Scott’s The Lady of the Lake. Franz List composed three variants of Ave Maria for piano. Charles Gounod has a similar, popular musical treatment. The Choir sings “Ave Maria” the Hail Mary, based on the Gospel of Luke, which Bible scholars say was originally written in eastern Mediterranean Greek, well before the Latin text that we employ, reflecting the words of the archangel Gabriel:

“Hail Mary- Ave Maria Full of grace- gratia plena

The Lord is with thee - Dominus tecum…”

As the Catechism says about our Lady:

“She shines forth on earth, until the day of the Lord shall come, a sign of certain hope and comfort to the pilgrim People of God. When we pray to her, we are adhering with her to the plan of the Father...we can pray with and to her. The prayer of the Church is sustained by the prayer of Mary and united with it in hope.”

Sweet, clement, Mary. Together we are indeed, pilgrims on a journey.

Dominus tecum...

Religious Education

Dear Friends and Families of Saint James,

As I said in our Religious Education newsletter for February, Lent is one of the two liturgical seasons the Church sets aside to help us refocus our lives. Advent is the other. I like to say that Advent is the time that we look for God coming into the world, and Lent is the time that we pause to consider where we have missed seeing God coming into our lives. As we approach Lent, I encourage all our parish families to consider what you can do to celebrate the season. Maybe you could add a prayer time before dinner or bedtime to your family’s routine? Maybe your family could consider making a donation to a food pantry to help feed those who are hungry? Maybe you could take walks once a week to appreciate God’s presence in all of creation? If you would like to consider more ideas, you can find a link to a Lenten Calendar on the Religious Education page of the parish website.

As you know, Lent begins this Wednesday, and we are pleased to announce that we will kick off the season for our Religious Education families with an Ash Wednesday

Above is a photo of the gifts blessed by Msgr. Mike that each child receives after their reception of the Sacrament. Their parents pray this blessing over them: "May the God who calls you to grow and invites you to care, the God who forgives and asks you to forgive oth-ers, bless you now and forever." Amen.

Gospel Meditation Family Promise Volunteer Coordinator Needed

The mission of Family Promise of the South Bay is to work through local churches to change the lives of homeless families with children by offering temporary shelter, meals, and other assistance as they seek stable housing. Guests stay overnight, on- site at host congregations, such as St. James on a weekly, rotating basis, with each church hosting the families 3 to 4 weeks per year. A Volunteer Coordinator is needed to manage the program for St. James as a host congregation. The Coordinator takes overall responsibility for ensuring that the host congregation’s program runs smoothly. Currently, due to COVID-19 restrictions the families are staying in a single host location and the Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for organizing and recruiting volunteers to help with grocery and gas gift cards and online donations for the week St. James participates as a remote host. The coordinator position is an opportunity to form meaningful bonds, with the Family Promise guests and parishioners of St. James alike, while connecting with other participating congregations in the South Bay. If you are interested in learning more please call Nanette Bordenave at 310.612.7643 or email at [email protected].

Saint James Niland Scholarships

The St. James Parish office will have applications available for five scholarships for seniors that will graduate from West Torrance, Redondo Union, or Bishop Montgomery High Schools and plan to attend a college or university in 2021.

These annual scholarships are offered to promote the involvement of young people in St. James Parish ministries. In accordance with the terms of the Niland Endowment, the scholarships are offered primarily based upon need, service to the parish/church community, involvement in church activities, GPA, and acceptance to an accredited college.

To apply you must be a registered member of St. James Parish and a practicing Catholic (e.g., confirmed and attending mass regularly).

Completed application packages should be submitted to the parish office no later than Monday, April 12th, 2021.

St. Oscar Romero said, “Aspire not to have more, but to be more.”

These powerful words provide the perfect framework for a conversion oriented Lenten experience. God is giving us this Lenten sign to stop being concerned about what you have and focus on who you are. This requires that we create a desert space and listen more attentively for God to reveal His presence. It is all so wonderfully simple on the one hand and so incredibly challenging on the other. The message is simple: love God, neighbor, and self. Those simple words make great sense, but we struggle translating them into reality. Our attachments, compulsions, obsessions, addictions, routines, and busyness all anchor us to the “idol of the self,” keeping us mired in our compulsive need for self-aggrandizement. It’s not about us!

God vowed, long ago, to nurture, sustain and protect the relationship He has with His people. He called us into being, nurtures us in being, and sustains us in being. Without the Loving Divine Presence, all life would cease. Once we slow down a bit and clear away some of the clutter, we can see how the journey of our life is unfolding. We can see what brings us in and out of tune with God’s love and how we can better imitate God’s loving fidelity in our relationship with Him. In short, we will see our myopic short sightedness and figure out how we can better share the Divine Fire within with others. Lent isn’t just about giving stuff up for forty days and indulging again at Easter. We need to push things much farther and wrestle with the question of how we can be more. “Being more” means becoming more fully alive and in touch with the holiness of life and the divinity that lives in and empowers all beings and things. It is realizing that the “quality” of our presence is crucial to being an effective witness and herald of God’s unconditional love.

The illusion we have bought into causes us to believe that the wrong things and systems matter. We tirelessly fight to keep things the way they are, to return to the former ways of doing things or restore some nostalgic fantasy memory of “life in the good old days.” Lent isn’t about maintaining what we have or returning to something that is gone. It’s about becoming something new. It’s about being more focused, centered, convicted, and grounded so that we can be a person who truly loves and treasures being made in the image of God.

The secret to Gospel living is not found in accumulating anything for ourselves, even merit points for heaven. Gospel living means learning how to live with less so that others can live with more. The thought of permanently giving something up makes us feel uncomfortable.

Truth often does. ©LPi

Inspired by Bishop Olmsted’s vision, the Knights of Columbus and the Diocese of Phoenix have joined together to produce a 12-episode video series, also titled Into the Breach. Each episode focuses on a different aspect of authentic Catholic masculinity and features interviews with well-known Catholic commentators and follows the personal story of a man whose life illuminates each theme.

The series can also be used for individual reflection and a study guide is available. By joining together in brotherhood, men receive the support they need to grow in virtue and to take action to serve Christ and others.

We hope that this series help you and all of us to step into the breach. To preview the video:
