The Church is not a building, nor a sanctuary; the Church is people who believe in Christ and come together as the Body of Christ. Granted we have a beautiful sanctuary that is a landmark in the community. I love how you can see into the sanctuary from the outside and see out into the community from the inside. Our sanctuary is beautiful! 2000 years ago the disciples of Jesus felt the same way toward the Temple; it was magnificent and beautiful, the center of Jewish society and community. It was in the Temple the sacrificial rituals took place as directed by the Torah; it was there that the priests fulfilled their duties and the people gathered for worship and prayer. However, Jesus responded with words they were not expecting, "I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another". No matter how beautiful and important the Temple was to the faithful, it was going to be destroyed. Fast forward 40 years after these words from Jesus, we find the Temple was destroyed by the Roman Empire. Members of Alliance visited the Holy Land and stood on the remains of that Temple last year and not one stone was left on another! Jesus' prophetic words came true! The priests responsible for the duties in the Temple were called Sadducees. Once considered the upper echelon of Jewish society because of their religious, economic and political status derived from the Temple, now they found themselves empty of power and hope. They depended on the Temple for their status; they valued the building more then they valued the Lord. So when the Temple was destroyed, their power was destroyed and they became extinct. Fast forward another 2000 years and we can be tempted to feel like the Sadducees when they lost their physical place of significance. Just remember, Alliance UMC is not its steeple (even though we have a beautiful steeple); Alliance is its people (folks like Chris, Juli, Sarah, Mo and Joe). We don't go to church, we are the Church! God bless the Church! +Bill
