A

Summer Blessing

Go now children. And know that the Spirit of Jesus will be watching over you. Go now and enjoy God’s summer gifts of warm sun, cooling waters, and long light days. Go now, children with the gift of faith, that you might see God’s hand in all your work and play. Go now with the gift of hope. That you may know God’s guidance, which is keeping you safe.

Go now with the gift of love, that you might offer love and care to all you meet. Go now with the gift of knowledge, remembering all that you have learned. With God’s help. Live it. Go now children, with these words of Jesus in your hearts: “I will not leave you alone, I am with you always.

Live a Catholic Life

Our history is rich with

Catholic men and women like us

who have carried their faith into

the world and made a difference.

When we live a Catholic life we

help shape a better society and a

more peaceful world.

At home. Our Gospel values

guide us to value our families and

friends as gifts of God’s love. This

translates into spending time

together, working to strengthen

and build up our loved ones, and

being for them instruments of love.

At work. As people of faith, w e

can be pressured to choose

between competing values in the

workplace. Making Catholic

choices means not just avoiding

evil but consciously choosing good.

It means having the courage to

honor our Catholic consciences al-

ways.

In the world. “Everyone to whom

much is given, of him much be

required” (Luke 12:48). Catholics–

especially in the United States are

called to care for the poor, protect

the vulnerable, welcome the

stranger and treat all people with

dignity.

That is the true Catholic way.

Saints of the Week

Monday, Aug 21 St. Pius X:The second of ten children born in Italy, He revived

the rundown diocese in Mantua. He was named the cardinal of Venice, and then

elected Pope. He began a codification of canon law, set up a commission to revise the

Vulgate, reorganized the papal court and ordered a revision of the psalter and the breviary.

He encouraged Italian Catholics to become more actively involved in politics He demanded

an oath against modernism by every priest.

Tuesday, August 22, The Queenship of The Blessed Virgin Mary: Mary’s queenship has roots in Scripture. At the Annunciation, Gabriel

announced that Mary’s Son would receive the throne of David and rule forever. At the Visitation, Elizabeth calls Mary “mother of my Lord.” As in all the

mysteries of Mary’s life, she is closely associated with Jesus: Her queenship is a share in Jesus’ kingship. We can also recall that in the Old Testament the mother

of the king has great influence in court. In the fourth century St. Ephrem called Mary “Lady” and “Queen.” Later Church fathers and

doctors continued to use the title. Hymns address Mary as queen: “Hail, Holy Queen,” “Hail,

Queen of Heaven,” “Queen of Heaven.” The Dominican rosary and the Franciscan crown as

well as numerous invocations in Mary’s litany celebrate her queenship.

Wednesday, August 23,St. Rose of Lima: Born in Lim a, Peru. Noted for her

beauty, she resisted her parents’ efforts to have her marry and practiced great austerities.

She became a Dominican tertiary, lived as a recluse in a shack in the garden she had worked

in, and experienced mustical gifts and visions of such an extraordinary nature that a com-

mission of priests and doctors was appointed to examine her. They decided they were of su-

pernatural origin. Stories of her holiness spread, and her garden became the spiritual center

of the city. When earthquakes struck nearby, her prayers were credited with sparing Lima.

Thursday, August 24, St. Bartholomew: He is m entioned in the synoptic

gospels and Acts as one of the twelve apostles. Scholars believe he is the same as Nathanel

mentioned in John, who says he is from Cana and that Hesus called him an

“Israelite...incapable of deceit.” He preached in India and Greater Armenia, where he was

flayed and beheaded by King Astyages.

Friday, August 25, St. Louis, St. Joseph Calasanz: Born in France, his father

died when he was 12. He married Margaret, daughter of Count Raymund Berenger of

Provence, and had 12 children. Noted for his justice, ability, charity, and personal piety,

Louis founded numerous religious and educational institutions, and forbade war among the

feudal lords. A man of his word he was often sought out as an arbitrator and settled

disputes. Under his rule France enjoyed unprecedented prosperity and peace as he followed

a policy of peaceful consistence with his European neighbors. He built the first French navy.

He was one of the greatest of all French Kings and embodied the highest ideals of medieval

kingship on the forty-four years of his rule.

When You Can’t Be Strong for Yourself

As a physician involved in the care of children I am very fortunate to witness daily

the wondrous power, strength and faith of the most physically fragile among us. One

such event involves Bobby, a five– year-old child who had been diagnosed with

leukemia at the age four. Bobby’s cancer was in remission– he was free of disease–

and he had come to the hospital for a series of diagnostic tests that were a routine part

of his treatment plan. Bobby had bright blue eyes and a shy smile that at first glance didn’t reveal the

wisdom gained through his one-year struggle against cancer.

Bobby had lost all of his hair secondary to his regular chemotherapy treatment. The chemotherapy

often left him nayseous and unavle to eat. Bobby was undergoing a procedure that was indeed

painful. He had been through it before. So he knew what to expect. I explained to him what we were

foing to do, and why, and the importance of him remaining very still. Bobby assured me that he

would be very still. And he promised that the nurses znd technologist in attendace would not need to

hold him down.

As we began, Bobby asked, “Dr. Brown, would it be okay if I say the Twenty –third Psalm while you

stick me?” “Of course, that would be fine,” I said, and we began.

Bobby recited beautifully, no tears, no movement. The procedure went well. Bobby, in his young

wisdom, reassured me, “Dr. Brown, that really didn’t hurt much.” We knew it had. Then Bobby

caught me by surprise when he asked, “Dr. Brown, do you know the Twenty –third Psalm?”

“Well sure,” I answered him.

“Can you recite it like me?” he asked, a bit doubtfully.

“Well, I don’t know. I think so,” I said, realizing that I was going out on a limb. Let’s hear you,’

said Bobby.

So I proceeded to stumble through it. My performance was quite shabby in comparison to Bobby’s.

and I didn’t have a needle sticking in my back. I noticed all the other white coated professionals in

the room were trying to disappear as they feared being called on next, a prospect more frightening

than being asked to perform at grand rounds.

Then beautiful and bald Bobby said to all of us, “You know, you really should learn the Twenty-third

Psalm by heart. Because when you say it out loud, God hears you and he lets you know inside your

heart that he is being strong for you when you can’t be strong yourself.”

“...for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”

James C. Brown, M.D.
