Leadership Message:

FUNDRAISNG FOR RAZIA’S RAY OF

HOPE BEGINS THURSDAY

In conjunction with our One Book, One School reading of I am Malala

and our school-wide Peace Builders and Social Emotional Learning

focus (Help Others, Social Awareness), we are introducing our first

fundraiser of the year for Razia’s Ray of Hope., a non-profit organiza-

tion that empowers Afghan girls and young women to gain an educa-

tion in the district of Deh’Subz, Afghanistan. This important program

was introduced to the students at our school-wide I Am Malala curric-

ulum day when students met and listened to Razia Jan, founder of the

program. Razia, a resident of Duxbury, is a CNN Top 10 Hero and Ro-

tary International Global Woman of Action.

Leadership Message (cont. from page 1)

In 2008 Razia opened the Zabuli Education Center, an all-girl K-12 school that cur-

rently provides free, exemplary education to 500 students. In early 2016 Razia will

open the doors to the Razia Jan Institute, the first women’s college in rural Af-

ghanistan, providing women with viable career paths.

On Thursday, October 13 we will be screening the documentary film, He Named

Me Malala for the entire school, and we are asking that students bring in a small

donation to benefit Razia’s Ray of Hope. For $300 we can completely fund a girl’s

experience at this K-12 school Our goal is to try to fund as many girls as possi-

ble, but to hopefully establish the sponsorship of one girl per. Cluster. So if stu-

dents can bring in a small donation of $1 or $5 it will go a long way towards reach-

ing our goals. There will be a prize for the cluster who raises the most money on

Thursday.

PROGRESS REPORTS & PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES –

Progress Reports will be posted at 3:00 PM on Friday, October 14th. You will be able to

sign up for Parent Teacher conferences at 5:00 PM the same day. To sign up for parent

teacher conferences, please go to our school’s website and click on the link provided.

We are excited for our first Round Table Discussion on October 17 from 7:00PM—8:30 PM in the FBMS Library. All parents are welcome to attend. The topic for this session will be Online Privacy/ Safety and Kids. This talk will be followed by a presentation by ADA Amanda Fowle for all interested parents on Oc-tober 24 from 7:00PM - 8:00PM in the FBMS Auditorium. Similar presentations will take place for students on October 25,26, and 27...more information regarding these talks will be coming soon.

Aspen Workshop for FBMS Parents

In an effort to be eco-friendly FBMS strives to be paperless wherever

possible. Progress Reports and Report Cards are posted to Aspen

for example rather than being printed and sent home with stu-

dents. Term 1 Progress Reports will be posted to Aspen on Friday, October 14th.

In order to help all parents become savvy aspen users, an Aspen Help Night for Parents is

scheduled for October 11th from 7-8PM in the FBMS Library. Whether you are a brand-new

user of Aspen or have experience with Aspen, you are invited to attend this hands-on work-

shop. By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

· Login and change your password

· Navigate Aspen

· Find posted Progress Reports

· Check academic grades and assignments

· Communicate with your child’s teachers

Any student interested in working on the staff for the first Furnace Brook Literary Maga-zine is invited to a meeting on October 17 immediately after school in room 109 (Ms. Greene’s room with Ms. Greene and Mrs. Burnett). Students on the staff of the Literary Magazine will:

Help to recognize and feature excellent writing and artwork

Design and produce the magazine

Submit their own, original work for publication.

We are very excited to bring this fantastic creative opportunity to our students. Also on October 17 after school in the band room, try-outs for our annual FBMS Talent Show will take place in the band room. This event is always an amazing showcase of our student (and even some faculty) talent will take place after school on November 10.

Welcome to the Builders FB Friends Club

We are excited for our third year of the Middle School Chapter of the Kiwanis Key Club to the Furnace Brook Community, with generous support from the Marshfield Kiwanis Club. Some of our upcoming activities include; collecting food for our local food pantry, filling and delivering backpacks with food and supplies for homeless, Ringing the Bell and collecting for the Salvation Army, Pre-School Holiday Party, Collecting Clothing for Cradles to Crayons, and Sing-along for Seniors at Proprietor’s Green.

The Kiwanis Builders Club seeks

to provide opportunities for working together in service to our school and community,

to develop leadership potential to foster development of a strong, moral character and to encourage loyalty to our school, community and nation

The Furnace Brook Friends Club was established by a former middle school student who wanted to help her classmates with challenges develop lasting friendships through social activities.

Under the direction of school staff, community members, High School Key Club members and parent volunteers, members will learn new ways to change the world by serving one person and one community at a time.

The Builders FB Friends Club will meet 1 Wednesday per month from 2:20 PM-3:20 PM in the school café on a late bus day. Our meetings will in-clude a social activity and a planning session to plan service projects and ac-tivities to promote the six lessons taught in Peace Builders (praise people, give up put-downs, seek wise people, notice hurts, right wrongs and help !

ALL ARE WELCOME TO COME TO AN INFORMATION-AL MEETING WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12 AFTER SCHOOL IN THE FBMS CAFE

This is always one of our most popular clubs, and all are welcome to attend this meeting. Any questions, please see Mrs. Bouressa in room 131.
