Who’s the “Best of You”?We speak with Sai Tzy Horng, the man behind Julie’s “Best of You” campaign, with the human touch

You might have seen the heart-warming posters or ads featuring personal stories with tag lines such as “Who is she?” or “She is the best of you”. If you’ve wondered what they’re about, look no further.

Biscuit and snack manufacturer Julie’s is behind this “Best of You” campaign and has called on the public to submit personal stories of people or experiences that have brought out the best in them. Submissions can be written stories or video or artworks. The submissions selected will be featured in an exhibition in Malaysia and Singapore.

We speak with the man behind the campaign, Sai Tzy Horng.

What made you start this campaign? The movement was started by Julie’s because we felt that a lot of friends and people in our company put in the best in everything that they do. We feel that it is a unique spirit in the

company and we’re very appreciative of that. Since they put the best of themselves in

everything they do, what is the best of you?

We noticed that most of the campaign artwork doesn’t feature any association with Julie’s. Why is this so?We want to tell people that the company is about the people, as well as the people who have been supporting our products all these years. It really isn’t about the products or us, it is about everyone else.

How can people relate this to your brand then? They don’t have to! They relate to their best experiences and think about what they do in everyday life and take stock of their accomplishments; take a moment to think about what they’ve done instead of focusing on becoming better, prettier, etc.

Appreciate your own efforts and other people’s efforts as well. That’s what we really hope to do.

How has the response been so far?The response has been superb! In terms of the depth of the submissions, I think that each participant put a lot of effort and thought into telling their personal stories.

One of our employees submitted a heart-warming story: He was a chain-smoker for more than 20 years. He stopped for his daughter’s health as he didn’t want his daughter to be a second-hand smoker. He he wrote the story in terms of letting go of a friend. i.e. Cigarettes.

It was really beautiful and it is things you don’t notice about him in his work facade. By Cheryl Chia

The “Best of You” campaign will culminate in an exhibition in end-October and early November. Visit www.the-best-of-you.com to submit your story.

The Barclay’s Premier League or English Premier League (EPL) has just opened to huge shocks and narrow wins for the top clubs in England. Are things set to only get better?

Even with the experience and influence of veteran manager van Gaal, it was obvious that Old Trafford or “The Theatre of Dreams” no longer possesses the fear factor it once did. Will United suffer a fate similar to the nightmare they experienced last season?

It was already apparent, and made more so with this loss, that United needs to buy more good players. Only time will tell.

Although defeating Crystal Palace by a single goal is no big feat, Arsenal fans can be excited about the change of pace from past seasons, where opening matches never went the Gunners’ way.

Sin City 2: A DAme to Kill For

Frank Miller’s popular modern film noir action-thriller is back and badder, in 3D

When the first Sin City film was released in 2005, fans of the graphic novel fell instantly in love with co-directors Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez’s screen adaptation.

Now the striking cinematic aesthetics are back in a bigger, more daring, and equally-haunting sequel with stunning new additions to the cast.

More than Just another saturday nightSome of the stories in A Dame to Kill for are prequels to the narratives from the first film. One of which is the fan favourite from the comics, “Just Another Saturday Night”.

With the desperate chasing vengeance and the vigilantes chasing murderers, paths cross in Sin City’s famous Kadie’s Club Pecos. The film tells the backstory of Josh Brolin’s character, Dwight, and his infatuation with Ava (portrayed by Eva Green of 300: Rise of an Empire).

Joseph Gordon-Levitt also stars as Johnny in one of the new stories, “A Long, Bad Night”. The young and arrogant gambler looks to take down his enemy in a wager of life and death. Expect things to not always turn out as expected.

gaga, gordon-Levitt & gangA Dame to Kill For boasts incredible additions to the already impressive cast. Joining the Sin City gang is the likes of Josh Brolin (Men in Black 3), Lady Gaga and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises).

Co-director Robert Rodriguez (who first gained famed

from his Desperado series of films) is known for casting well-known actors in roles that are different from their usual personas. Perhaps we could look forward to seeing our fan favourites and film veterans cast in a different light.

Fans of the first film can be excited by the return of Bruce Willis and Jessica Alba as Hartigan and Nancy. Marv and his high forehead also return, once again portrayed by Mickey Rourke.

CuLt CLassiC graphiC noveL in 3dRodriguez believes that Sin City, because of the quality of the original graphic novel by Frank Miller, could perhaps be the perfect movie to watch in 3D. The trademark black and white aesthetic on top of the film’s overall dark and haunting themes would complement the 3D experience.

“With the 3D, you feel like you are inside a graphic novel,” said the director.

For both long-time Sin City fans as well as modern film noir lovers, Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill for is nothing short of a must-see. Conversation with a creative geniusLegendary local composer Dick Lee brings HOTPANTS back to the stage

Most know Singaporean musical maven Dick Lee as the “Mad Chinaman” (from his album name) or as a key judge on Singapore Idol, or as the one who penned a slew of musical hits, such as “Home”, one of our favourite national songs.

This talented composer has also written songs for many plays such as Beauty World, Fried Rice Paradise, and the recently- revived HOTPANTS the musical.

We spoke to this creative genius.

What can audiences expect from the revived HOTPANTS the musical?A fun-filled toe-tapping night out!

You’re also in the process of remaking a darker version of Beauty World. How dark is it going to get and when can we expect it?It will be a very different version, from the set to the characters. The revival will take place in Nov/Dec 2015.

Do you ever look back on your days of wearing hot pants and cringe or feel proud? There is nothing to feel proud about wearing hot pants (a ladies’ garment), which I, unfortunately, did at my debut in Japan in 1990.

The audience had only seen me via my Mad Chinaman CD cover, where I was dressed in Chinese opera costume with full makeup, so they had no idea what I really looked like. I decided to shock the audience by looking as outrageous as possible, and when I first walked on stage the cheering room suddenly fell silent for a second, and then continued cheering… or were they laughing?

Any future plans you can share with us?I’ve been busy with the National Day Parade and working on several exciting projects, which are part of SG50 celebrations.

I’m also working on three other musicals, and I am preparing to direct my first movie, which begins filming in January next year.

Whether in La Femme Nikita, The Professional, The Fifth Element or a slew of other action-thriller films, writer-director-producer Luc Besson has created some of the toughest, most memorable female action heroes in cinematic history.

Lucy is a sci-fi action-thriller that examines the possibility of what one human being could truly do if she unlocked 100 percent of her brain capacity. The human brain has deeply fascinated even the most accomplished scientists and it has long been hypothesized that human beings use only a small percentage of our cerebral capacity at any given time.

Lucy both depicts the wonder and the

danger of what could happen if our full mental potential were to be released.

THe UNlikelY HerOiNeLucy, aptly portrayed by Scarlett Johansson (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), is a carefree young woman who was forced to transport a powerful substance via surgical implantation inside of her belly. However, when the drug packet breaks open and the chemical is absorbed by her body, the unimaginable happens: her brain capacity is unlocked to startling levels.

Lucy begins to feel everything around her — space, air, people — and to develop new abilities, including telekinesis and mind-reading, among other superpowers that defy our understanding of human physiology.

To Johansson, the biggest challenge was to portray Lucy as a truly relatable character despite the psychological and

physical changes that she’s experiencing. “As the drug kicks in, Lucy gradually

loses the ability to empathize and to feel pain,” explained Johansson.

Johansson delivers an intriguing performance. Look out for the emotional scene where she talks to her mom on the phone about how she remembers the “thousand kisses”, and “taste of her milk” and everything since she was born.

TrUe FicTiON?Besson walks the fine line between theoretical reality and imagination. Although he was keen to make tremendous action-thriller material, he was also intent on grounding part of Lucy in scientific fact. He reached out to a number of scientists, including world-renowned neurologist Yves Agid.

Said Agid, “That’s what I find splendid in the film: There are true facts. When you see it, you believe it.”

While some may find the story of Lucy dynamic and interesting, others may find that the bizarre concepts are too far-fetched. Lucy develops the incredible abilities of controlling of others’ minds, bending the laws of physics, rewinding time, all under the influence of a man-made drug.

Nonetheless, with the film’s surreal special effects and pulsating action, we’d say this exaggeration is a small matter. Furthermore, the visual effects in the film are so ethereal that you’d be awestruck. One and a half hours of this action-packed sci-fi thriller is hardly enough.

Hai Tien Lo in Pan Pacific Singapore introduces its 10th Anniversary menu in honour of their chef

These days, it’s rare for someone to stay in the same job for many years. Hai Tien Lo in Pan Pacific Singapore’s Chef Lai Tong Ping is celebrating his

decade-long career at the restaurant with a celebratory menu.

The six-course menu comprises ten items ($108) and features traditional Chinese dishes with handmade ingredients.

Eat LikE a kingThe meal begins with a trio plate of Sliced Barbecued Duck and Shredded Jelly Fish, Braised Homemade Beancurd with Minced Pork, and Pine Mushrooms in the chef’s Signature XO Chilli Sauce and Crispy Prawn in Sesame Sauce. We especially like the sliced barbecued duck with its crisp skin.

The Braised Fish Maw with Dried Scallop in Supreme Chicken Stock and Sea Perch Fillet comes next. The Sea Perch Fillet is prepared in two ways: deep fried and drizzled with homemade champagne sauce, and steamed with green minced onion sauce.

However, one of my favourite dishes is the Braised Pork Ribs with Preserved Vegetables and Deep Fried Buns. The ribs are slow-cooked until fork-tender, and the savoury sauce is worth mopping up with the deep fried bun.

PiEcE dE REsistancEThe Wok-fried Fish Noodles with Sea Cucumber and Scallops is truly one of the best dishes on the menu. The ‘noodles’ are actually strands of fish meat and the accompanying sea cucumber is cooked for more than 24 hours before serving, resulting in a rich and flavourful dish. The menu ends with a refreshing mango sago dessert.

Chef Lai says, “In my ten years with Hai Tien Lo, I have gained invaluable experience. I honed my skills and pushed my creative boundaries to present new dishes.”

“With this celebratory menu, each selected item is prepared using a different method that best showcases the natural flavours and quality of the ingredients,” he adds.

The celebratory menu is available until Dec 31.

Get Naughty at Bar NakedFly Entertainment founder Irene Ang’s new bar concept puts you on the naughty list

Remember HQ on Club Street? The karaoke bar has since evolved into Bar Naked, a chilled out watering hole with premium cocktails.

Founded by Fly Entertainment founder & CEO Irene Ang and Pat Law from Goodstuph, the bar menu takes direction from former Tippling Club barman, Zachary Connor de Git. He is currently Regional Portfolio Ambassador for William Grant & Sons (WGS). With WGS’ involvement, the bar utilises spirits such as Monkey Shoulder, Sailor Jerry, and Reyka Vodka.

“There is a need for reinvention every two to three years, especially on this competitive stretch of Club Street. The implementation of the road closure at Club Street and Ann Siang Road in late 2013 was a significant prompt for change and need for spaces for social activities, recreation and respite,” said Irene on the revamp of HQ to the current Bar Naked.

Star-Studded OpeningA few weeks ago, the opening boasted a hoard of celebrities such as Allan Wu,

Rebecca Tan, Patricia Mok, and Zhou Chong Qing. They played party games, and guests were challenged to finish a whole banana within seconds in exchange for drinks.

A DIY cocktail stand, or as Irene herself put it, ‘yong tau foo,’ was set up in the upstairs enclave for a little fun. We got to pick out whatever fruit was available – mostly berries with the odd ingredient like chilli – and hand it to the bartenders for our own bespoke cocktail.

StrOng tippleSThe menu of cocktail mainstays features the Malt Jockey ($28) with Monkey Shoulder whisky, sweet vermouth, maraschino and chocolate bitters, and the Dirty & Naked ($28) with Reyka Vodka, elderflower, tea, citrus, and a touch of Balvenie Double Wood.

There are also bar snacks such as Aunty Ang’s Wings ($16), Popcorn Chicken ($14) and the crowd-pleaser, Truffle Fries ($16), for sinful snacking. Why not get a little naughty at Bar Naked?

Probably one of the best kept secrets of the West, dinners at Joyden Seafood are sure to make a joyful noise

Living in the west, I always bemoaned the lack of good food around my area but little did I know of the hidden gem nestled right by my home.

I’m not even exaggerating about Joyden Seafood Restaurant being right by my home. It’s a mere overhead bridge away from my block. I’ve just never visited and, boy, how I wished I went earlier.

Celebrating its tenth anniversary, Joyden Seafood Restaurant – formerly known as West Coast Seafood – is hidden in the carpark of West Coast Recreational Centre. It serves traditional Chinese seafood as well as classic Cantonese dim-sum in the day.

ClassiC Chinese DishesOne of my favourite dishes from Chinese cuisine is the yam ring. The simple fried yam ring, when done correctly, can be crisp and pillowy at the same time. The Lemongrass Pork Ribs in Yam Ring ($25-$38) from Joyden is definitely my favourite dish.

Putting a spin on the traditional yam ring with pork ribs encased within, the pork ribs are seasoned with lemongrass, ginger flower, chilli, Chinese wine and molasses, resulting in a sweet and lightly spiced pork rib. It was a refreshing change from the usual cashew chicken and, of course, the yam ring was crisp and pillowy.

Joyden’s Signature Creamy Crab (Market Price), is also a nice change from the standard pepper or chilli crab. The steamed crab is steeped in milk and pumpkin puree with curry leaves, chilli padi and black pepper. Order a dish of fried buns to mop up the velvety sauce.

TraDiTional DelighTsFor traditionalists, there are familiar dishes such as the Steamed Lobster with Glutinous Treasure Rice (Market Price). It comes in a bamboo basket, which reveals steaming lobsters over a layer of glutinous rice with dried shrimps, shallots, Chinese sausage and scallions. Surprisingly, the glutinous rice stole the show in this dish as all the flavours have seeped into the rice.

Joyden Seafood Restaurant also has its own dim sum chef, so for dessert – apart from the standard mango sago – you can pick the Baked Mini Egg Custard Tart ($3.60) or Salted Egg Custard Bun ($4.20). This gem is not so hidden anymore.

Joyful feasting at Joyden

Serving only three dishes, Pince & Pints makes it worth your while with whole lobsters

Every time I say this, many of my peers glare at me. I like lobsters, not crabs. I know the statement makes me sound terribly spoiled but I just mean that I prefer the ease of consumption and the meaty texture of lobsters.

Hurray for Pince & Pints that’s just opened (with insanely-long queues)! It has quickly become popular and for good reason: It serves only three dishes yet with a whole lobster in each of them.

Started by Frederick Yap, Pince & Pints imports lobsters from the United States and Canada in deep sea tanks a few times a week, since the lobsters have to be consumed within seven days.

Down where iT’s BeTTerMy favourite out of the three dishes (each at $48++) was definitely the Lobster Roll. Each dish contains a whole 600g lobster and so did the massive lobster roll. The lobster flesh is seasoned with salt and pepper then mixed with mayonnaise before being padded into pillow-soft buns.

With no lack of hotel brunch options around the island, is the new Caprilicious champagne brunch good enough to win people over to its location?

Hotel buffet lines have been following the same classic formula – the open-concept live kitchens; the seafood counter with exotic crustaceans glistening on a bed of ice cubes; chunks of roast and meat; the obligatory BBQ station and, of course, the sinful dessert corner.

I couldn’t help but feel the sensation of déjà vu upon entering Caprilicious.

As I entered, I was greeted by a cosy and unpretentious vibe that sets the appropriate ambience for a scrumptious brunch. But would this turn out to be worth the trip?

The Mains: YaY & naYThe Steamed Chilean Sea bass was really well-cooked and tender. The yuzu sauce complemented it well, adding a tangy sensation to the taste of the fish.

The Crackling Pork Roulade is not the usual roasted pork. It is infused with apple compote and plum sauce, giving it the exquisitely multi-dimensional flavour.

The Eggs Benedict’s poached egg is served on a buttery brioche roll instead of the standard English muffin but could do with more hollandaise sauce. The flaky croissant with teriyaki salmon, too, was nothing to shout about.

Die, Die, MusT-TrY!Hit the mouth-watering seafood crustacean counter filled with Fresh Tiger Prawn, New Zealand Green Mussel, Peruvian Half Shell Scallops and Canadian Oysters – full of

The buns were buttered and pan-fried prior to serving, which resulted in a creamy-sweet bun with tasty lobster chunks encased inside. The accompanying French fries and mesclun salad were quite substantial, with the former going superbly with the garlic aioli sauce provided.

loBsTers, anD More loBsTers! The other two dishes are Live Whole Lobster – grilled or steamed – and Chilli Lobster. Fans of chilli crab might want to try Pince & Pints’ Chilli Lobster. The chilli sauce is eggy and slightly less sweet, and it comes with the mandatory side of deep-fried mantous to soak up the sauce.

I tried the whole grilled lobster and the resulting smoky taste added to the fragrance of the lobster without overpowering its natural taste. It comes with a simple clarified butter sauce, fries and side salad. However, I have to say, if you are looking for the most filling dish, you’re better off choosing the Lobster Roll instead.

There are no desserts at Pince & Pints, and it does not take reservations. The best times to come are either right before it opens or for a late 9pm dinner. Be prepared to wait at least an hour for your table but it’s worth it!

resplendent freshness and juiciness.Right beside that is a luscious showcase

of three types of freshly cut sashimi – Norwegian Salmon, Ahi Tuna and Octopus. They were all impeccably fresh, with natural sweetness in every morsel of flesh.

Don’t miss out on the BBQ station outside, featuring quarter-pound Wagyu patties accompanied by teriyaki sauce, garlic rosemary lamb cutlets and grilled beef patty.

a sweeT enDing Round your belly-bursting brunch with indulgent options such as opera cake, mousse, and churros. A selection of exotic tropical fruits, which include soursop and durian pengat (with Gula Melaka) also awaits.

On the whole the champagne brunch was not amazing but satisfying and good value for money.

From the Tottori Sand Dunes to the Universal Studios Japan Harry Potter theme park, check out these destinations popular with the Japanese and tourists

Located in the western part of southern Japan, Tottori prefecture is a coastal fishing region known nationally for its white squid,

matsuba (snow crabs) and Nijisseiki pears. It is about 2.5 hours’ drive from Osaka.

Tottori city, easily accessible by rail, serves as gateway to its nationally-famous attraction, the Tottori Sand Dunes.

Sand duneS in Japan?Formed over 100,000 years ago, the Tottori sand dunes span 16km wide and 2km deep. The constant wind from the sea creates rolling dunes and sculpts ripple patterns on its surface.

Its largest dune, a few minutes’ walk from the entrance, is several storeys high and provides the perfect place for sandboarding or paragliding. Kids can have a blast as well. The sand dunes are great for hiking or riding camels or horse-drawn carriages. (www.torican.jp/en/)

Two-STorey Sand SculpTureSAside from the dunes, the ingenious marketing people for Tottori created a Sand Museum – the world’s first. Conveniently located across the street from the sand dunes, the museum exhibits an impressive array of towering sculptures made entirely of sand.

Each year, the museum creates a theme and invites distinctive sand sculptors from around the world to participate. Even Singapore’s award-winning Joo Heng Tan has participated in several previous exhibitions.

This year, the museum’s theme celebrates Russia’s history and culture in conjunction with the Sochi Winter Olympics. From great mammoths battling the Rus (the original settlers in Russia) to the exploration of space by the Russian cosmonauts, 21 sand dioramas portray and pay tribute to the various aspects of Russia’s past.

The current exhibition will run until Jan 4, 2015. (www.sand-museum.jp/en/)

The cruise weaves in an out of the coastline, giving spectators a close-up view of the tunnels, caves and unusual rock formations created by marine erosion of the sea walls.

1,100-year-old hoT SpringUnbeknownst to most, Hyogo is the home to the famous Kobe beef. This is an area rich in onsens (Japanese hot springs) and cattle production. As part of my onsen experience, I visited Yumura, a small village with a population of slightly over a thousand, in the northwest area of Hyogo.

What distinguishes Yumura from many other hot springs is its unusually high temperature, measuring about 98°C – hot enough that, in the past, townspeople cooked food by leaving a net basket filled with bamboo shoots, vegetables or mountain herbs in the water.

Today, tourists buy eggs, corn and sweet potatoes from the surrounding shops to cook in the central onsen using the same method.

AsANOYA & JAPAN’s ONsEN CuLTuREWhile I was at Yumura, I stayed at the Asanoya, an onsen hotel modelled in the style of a Japanese castle, atop a hill. While most rooms at Asanoya have private wooden tubs, the best rooms come with outdoor tubs, which can fit up to five people. The tubs are made from 1,000-year-old Hinoki trees. What a luxury!

Asanoya also has a series of communal baths with varying temperatures. The warmest one is about 60°C, located next to a two-storey waterwheel, surrounded by overhanging foliage.

The most distinctive one, for me, is made out of a massive tree trunk, almost 2m in diameter and 2m long. It is hollowed out like a canoe. But instead of keeping water out, it catches the ever-flowing spring water.

At Asanoya, each guest is given a yukata (literally “bathing clothes”), a casual Japanese summer kimono. For the complete traditional look, a pair of geta (wooden sandals) is provided for guests to clip-clop around town.

ONsEN RITuALCustomarily, guests take a bath before dinner and stroll around town in their yukata and geta, return to feast on the best local fare on offer, and then bathe again.

As they dine, the bedding is rolled out on the tatami (traditional Japanese mats) in preparation for bedtime. The next morning, traditional breakfast is served. Typically, the Japanese will onsen-hop to experience different onsens while on vacation.

BATHING RuLEs & ETIquETTEIn the communal baths, everyone needs to be naked. So the sexes bathe separately. To keep the baths pristine, everyone needs to soap and shower before entering. For bashful people, such as myself, even a waist towel is not allowed. Naturally, photos are also not allowed.

To prevent the Yakuza (the Japanese mafia) from entering, onsens prohibit anyone with tattoos. For Singaporeans with decorative tattoos, this may pose a problem. However, showing the manager your Singaporean identity pass may exclude you from the Yakuza profile.

The onsen is certainly very different from our everyday bathing experience in Singapore. Every visitor to Kansai must try it!

Adventure on the mystical mountain

Whether you love nature or legends or biking, Gunung Jerai is a place you have to put in your itinerary

Gunung Jerai, formerly known as the Kedah Peak, is a mystical mountain located in the northern Malaysian state of Kedah.

In the days of yore, the mountain played an important role as a landmark for sailors who came from all around the world. Today, it is Kedah’s premier hill resort and recreational park.

On any given day, with good weather, the picturesque peaks offer a panoramic view of the coastal plains in Kedah to its neighbouring state, Perlis. These peaks can be seen from Penang in the south to Langkawi in the northwest.

At about 1,217m above sea level, Gunung Jerai is a stunning monument of nature.

sHROuDED IN LEGEND Gunung Jerai is steeped folklore, making the mountain all the more interesting for the intrepid visitor to explore. Ancient traders regarded Gunung Jerai as a sacred peak and legends surrounding it abound.

One such legend was that of the infamous bloodthirsty Raja Bersiong (Fanged King) who ruled over an ancient kingdom near the foot of Gunung Jerai.

What’s certain is that the mountain and its surroundings in Bujang Valley have an age-old history of human settlement, evidenced by many archaeological remains. It formed part of a thriving Hindu-Buddhist kingdom that existed thousands of years ago.

A PLAYGROuND OF FRAGRANCEsOn Gunung Jerai’s slopes is the Sungai Teroi Recreational Forest – a forest virtually untouched by time that contains a rich collection of mountain flora and fauna, with orchids, rhododendrons and pitcher plants found in abundance. Visitors have been known to remark on the richly-scented interior filled with delicious scents.

Another great way to appreciate the sights and sounds Gunung Jerai has to offer is to use the Tangga Kenari, or Canary Stairs, which starts at the foot of the mountain and leads all the way up to a resort. The series of 1,300 steps is a formidable climb and suited only for the truly fit and healthy. Do consult your doctor beforehand.

Other attractions include a forestry museum conveniently situated halfway up

the mountain, in the recreational forest. Two other must-see spots are the Telaga

Tok Sheikh (Tok Sheikh Well), and an open area called the Padang Tok Sheikh (Tok Sheikh Field), both of which are named after a prominent Muslim sage who lived in the Middle Ages.

The cool, clear and pristine waterfall known locally as Lubuk Naga (Dragon Pool) is a lovely getaway. Just a 20-minute hike from the foot of Gunung Jerai, Lubuk Naga is not as heavily frequented as the average waterfall in Malaysia. The chilly water and picture-perfect scenery will do much to soothe your tired body.

BIkING ADvENTuREIf you’re looking for more high-adrenalin kicks, go mountain biking on Gunung Jerai. Mountain biking presents an opportunity for you to exercise and to keep fit, while discovering the innate beauty of Malaysia in a free and adventurous way.

The Gunung Jerai Mountain Bike Challenge is both challenging and scenic, undulating through rural areas, rubber and oil palm plantations, and mountain tracks.

HOW TO GET THEREMalaysia Airlines serves Alor Setar, capital of Kedah, from locations such as Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Kota Bharu. Gunung Jerai is accessible by road from the town of Gurun, about 33km south of Alor Setar via the truck road or the North-South Expressway.

Private taxis charge about RM6 for a round trip to the foothills and back.

Express buses, outstation taxis, and trains also offer regular services from Butterworth in Penang to Alor Setar.
