God bless, Fr Bob Dear Parishioners and Visitors to Holy Cross Parish The Presentation of the firstborn was a religious requirement for the Jewish people established in Exodus 13:2: “Consecrate to me every first-born; man and beast, the first issue of every womb among the Israelites is mine.” (The Jewish Publication Society’s Tanakh translation) The first-born was either given to the Lord or else it had to be redeemed (bought back). Two reasons are considered for this practice. For one, Abel brought the choicest of the firstlings of his flock to God. God favoured Abel’s sacrifice over his brother Cain’s offering which was simply a bowl of fruit from his harvest. We’re not sure why Cain’s offering wasn’t sufficient. Perhaps it was what lay in his heart as he gave it. For, unfortunately, God’s favour of Abel’s offering was the last straw for the jealous Cain, who then killed his brother. There is a reference to Abel’s sacrifice in our first Eucharistic prayer, asking that God accept our offering with the same pleasure he received Abel’s. The second reason for the first-born sacrifice is that it is a reminder of God’s salvation from slavery in Egypt. It is a reminder to the Hebrews that, as once they were slaves and God took the first-born of their captors - child and beast - so now in their freedom and out of thanksgiving, the Hebrews are to give God the first-born acknowledging what they have received. It is also noted that this practices applies to the first-born of the mother, not the father. The practice of offering finds meaning in that it becomes something we cannot reclaim - we have given it up completely. This reminds us that it was never really ours to own in the first place. Only by God’s creative work, including creating us to be resourceful and industrious, do we have the ability to hold any of the things of creation. We can’t grasp even at the best because, ultimately, it all belongs to God. We lose nothing. God receives what is rightfully God’s. The Jewish religion has never been about sacrificing and destroying human life as an offering to God. Abraham almost set it in place with Isaac but, it was never God’s intention that it would go that far (quizzically, God did go that far with his own Son but, we know he had a plan for that). Therefore, rather than give up a human’s life for God, the sacrifice was usually made with money, relative to the cost of the animal. In this sense one ‘bought back’ her first-born. Such money was often given to a charity or to the work of the temple. The law in Leviticus also requires a burnt offering to be offered (usually a ram) by the mother as a cleansing ritual following a period of purification. Provision is also made for the offering of two pigeons or turtledoves if the mother is not able to afford the ram. Such practices lie behind the Gospel reading for this weekend about the Presentation the Lord. God bless, Fr Bob

Dear Parishioners and Visitors to Holy Cross Parish

The Presentation of the firstborn was a religious requirement for the Jewish people established in Exodus 13:2: “Consecrate to me every first-born; man and beast, the first issue of every womb among the Israelites is mine.” (The Jewish Publication Society’s Tanakh translation)

The first-born was either given to the Lord or else it had to be redeemed (bought back).

STEWARDSHIP AWARENESS

The Presentation of the Lord

“… they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord...”

Luke 2:22

How seriously do you take being a Catholic? Is “being Catholic” something I just do when I attend Sunday Mass or attend one of my parish functions? It’s easy to be Catholic then, it’s harder to be Catholic when I am out in the world. Would someone recognise you as a Catholic by the way you act, dress, and talk? How do you present yourself to the Lord and to others?

9am to 2.30pm would be the hours. If you are NOT sure about what it entails, then pop into the Coffee Lounge, meet Sandy or Suzanne, have a look around, try the food and make your decision from there.

For any information call Sandy O'Donohue (Archdiocesan President) on 0407 791 833. You can also see Sandy after Mass, 6pm Saturday or 7.30am Sunday.
