FROM THE OFFICE OF R.C.I.A.

A rite is a ritual event that marks a person’s transition from one stage to another. A liturgical rite has the power to transform not only the lives of those seeking to enter the Catholic Church but also the parish communi ty . One liturgical rite is the

Rite of Sending in the Order of Catechumens which is of the utmost importance. At the conclusion of the Period of the Catechumenate, a Rite of Sending of the Catechumens to their election by the bishop may be celebrated in the Parish. This Rite of Sending offers the Parish community the opportunity to express its approval of the Catechumens and to send them forth to the celebration of election assuring them the Parish’s care and support. Let us pray for our Catechumens who celebrate this Rite: Elissa A. Herrera, Vennette Aguilar, Danielle Sierra Hernandez, and Cassidy Nguyen.

EARLY BULLETIN DEADLINE There will be an early deadline for the Easter Sunday bulletin. Please submit all information to the Parish office at [email protected] by Tuesday, March 20 for the April 1 bulletin.

As God’s people, we are called to celebrate, promote, and when necessary to defend the life and dignity of every person. About our Catholic Faith

Ad Orientem Celebration Vatican II authorized the reform of the liturgy which included allowing the vernacular languages to be used along with the continued use of Latin. The council also attempted to recapture the ancient tradition of having the altar free-standing. This tradition was never lost in the Orthodox or Eastern Rites of the Catholic Church. Unfortunately, this came to be understood in the Latin Rite as an insistence that the priest now face the people during Mass. This has never been a requirement of the liturgical reform. The ancient tradition of the Church is that the priest, acting in the person of Christ the head, and the people, as the Body of Christ, face God in the same direction. Traditionally, this has been to the east (ad orientem). The early Church celebrated the Eucharist with the intention that Christ was coming back in glory imminently. They also looked to the east and the rising sun as a cosmic symbol of the Resurrection. In the year 2000, the Vatican clarified that the Mass may be celebrated in the traditional way ad orientem or facing the people versus populum.

As there are many different options in the liturgy, we will take this option of ad orientem celebration for the Advent/Christmas cycle and the Lent/Easter cycle. During Ordinary Time the celebration will be versus populum. As with most things, all of us have our preferences. Please be open to experience Mass celebrated ad orientem as well as versus populum.
