calls from an anonymous caller to my home, tomy former business, to local newspapers, andto those I do business with now. The personplacing these calls seems to have a vendettaagainst me, trying to discredit me personally andprofessionally. He makes reference to the yearsI've been in business on island, This manalso seems to know me personally. Those whohave received these calls describe the caller'svoice as belonging to an angry, middle agedmale with an unusual mid western accent.

I' m concerned for the safety of myself andmy family. If anyone has any information thatcould help apprehend this person, please callOfficer George Krivas at the Sanibel PoliceDepartment, 472-3111.

them by the throat. Help is at hand though,as. local restaurants and watering holes arewell prepared to slake even the deadliestthirst and rejuvenate the scorched, theparched, and the wilted. '• . -

For those residents and visitors who can-not conceive of venturing out of the air con-ditioning before November, we offer somerecipes to try at home. •

The BeanOne of Sanibel's most popular stops is

The Bean, located in Sanibel Square.Owners Daniel and Monica Dix offer a widearray of cold drinks, including smoothiesmade from-scratch, fruit granitas, frozen

cappuccino and the exotic iced chai.Chai is an Indian word for tea, but its fla-

vor has a depth and complexity that goes astep beyond the iced orange and black pekoetea most folks are used to drinking. Thereare many recipes for this drink, each with itsown blend of tea and spices.

The Bean makes their's with tea, milk, alittle sugar and honey, cinnamon, clove, car-damom, nutmeg and "a touch of black pep-per— but you'd never notice," Monica said.

A serving goes for $3. For the adventur-ous, the version on the next page will makeabout four cups of chai.

The Mucky DuckFor those in search of a 'restorative cock-

tail,' as P.G. Wodehouse would say, there areseveral options available.

The Mucky Duck, on Captiva, offers alighter variation on the classic margarita, made with agave wine rather than tequila.

A half-pint is $3.96, while afiint goes for$4.95.

Sanibel studentreceives honors

jh resident Jordan Henning, 17,recently returned from the AAU JuniorOlympics where he received All AmericansHonors by placing sixth over all in theNational freestyle wrestling competition inhis weight class.

The Junior Olympics drew over 15,000athletes from all over the country to com-pete in more than 28 different sports inOrlando area venues, The wrestling compe-tition was held in the University of CentralFlorida Arena.

Henning, who will be a senior this yearat Fort Myers High School and co-captainof the wrestling team, has had a busy sum-mer. Prior to competing in the JuniorOlympics, he was selected to the FloridaNationals Dual Team and competed in 15dual meets in Oklahoma City. One weekafter returning from Oklahoma he left forthe Junior Nationals in Fargo, ND, where he

competed with over 3,500 other wrestlers inboth Greco Roman and Freestyle competi-tions.

When he got off the plane in Orlando, hewent straight to the Junior Olympics andwas competing less than two hours later.Because he was coming to the JuniorOlympics from Fargo, he missed the firsttwo rounds of competition. In spite of start-ing with a two match deficit, he was stillable to win enough matches to qualify forthe individual competition where he wenton to finish sixth.

He says he feels that the amount of expo-sure to national competitions he has had thissummer has gained him valuable experiencethat he will bring to the mat this Novemberwhen the regular high school season begins.

HUNG UP TO DRY?One visiting artist's down-home

atternative to dispiaying artBy Val CopeStaff Writer

BILL Hemp's clothesline isn't hungwith freshly washed sheets—andit's not in the backyard either.

Hemp, a visiting artist, will be exhibiting hiscolored pen-aud-ink drawings at theMacintosh Bookshop beginning this Friday.

His drawings, many of historic islandbuildings like the Sanibcl PackingCompany, Chapel By the Sea and MorningGlories, will be matted and creatively hungfrom sisal hemp rope with ordinary clothes-pins. The 72-year-old artist said he got theidea of the informal, exhibit from strugglingGreenwich Village artists who couldn'tafford expensive frames, "I'm-retired, livingoff social security, and don't have all thatmoney to spend on framing," said Hemp.

"I've been drawing since I was a kid,"said Hemp, a past creative director for theadvertising agency of Young & Rubicamand Burson-Marsteller, a PR firm of interna-tional acclaim.

A first-time visitor to the island. Hemp,

who is renting a condo with his wife Maggieuntil Sept. 3, said he first began sketchingisland landmarks after attending a booksigning for Randy Wayne White atMacintosh Book Shop. In fact, his very firstdrawing was of the bookstore.

Hemp's year-round home in PointLookout, Long Island is eight blocks fromthe parents of Jim Dowling, the bookstore'sowner, who also grew up in the small NewYork coastal town. Hemp approachedDowling about doing a show and his ideawas enthusiastically received even thoughthe shop had never hosted an exhibition, before.

The show, "Scenes of Sanibel andCaptiva," will show Hemp's detailed andvividly colored renditions of Captiva'sIsland Store, most of the Historic Villagestructures, the Old Schoolhouse Theater, aview Tarpon Bay, including kayaks, amongothers.

"I do almost everything on site but whenI get back to the condo I touch them up andWhite-Out the mistakes," said Hemp with amodest chuckle. Each mixed media drawing

begins with a rough pencil sketch whichHemp refines in pen-and-ink and thenshades with colored pencils to bring out thetrue personality of each scene.

Hemp's fascination with antique trucksled him to Sam Bailey. He explained, "Iwent to see him and said I'd like to draw hisModel T. The next day he pulled it out infront of the Packing Company." Also in theexhibit will be a drawing of a beautifulgreen 1956 Ford pickup that Hemp sawbehind the Mobil Station. "I love the old gaspumps with the glass tops so 1 took artisticlicense and added that in."

DOWN BY THE OLD FERRY LANDINGThe founding of the Sanibel-Captiva Chamber of Commerce

(Editor's note: This is part one of a two-part series.)

By Nancy C. SanteusanioSpecial to the Islander

Everything has a beginning. Someideas are generated in very infor-mal settings, others in board

rooms but, in 1954, the Sanibel CaptivaIslands Business Association had its begin-ning with a group of businessmen standingon a pile of logs down by the old ferry land-ing.

The association was the brain child ofPaul Stahlin, owner of J.P. Carter TruckingCompany. Stahlin was described as a suc-cessful good-looking businessman who tookover the leadership and presidency of theassociation during its infancy and was re-elected for the following two years.

I.T. "Tom" Billheimer, owner of theHigh Tide Motel, served as vice president;John Wakefield, general contractor as trea-surer; and Francis Bailey, Jr. of SanibelPacking Company as secretary. Serving onthe seven-member board of directors wereJeremiassen, Mitchell and Kearns. Theboard members represented Sanibel andCaptiva equally with Dean Mitchell, ownerof Mitchell's Restaurant, now The Mad

Hatter, as the "in-between" board member. The board meetings were scheduled for

8:30 p.m. These businessmen worked until6 p.m., had dinner and then attended boardmeetings often at Mitchell's Restaurantwhich was the so-called "halfway point,"South Seas Plantation or at the home of oneof the officers. Since there was no ferryboatin the evening, no movie theaters or play-houses and island activities were fairly min-imal, the board members looked forward totheir meetings, and faithful, most often per-fect, attendance was the norm.

Francis Bailey emphasized that this asso-ciation was not looking for "fly by nights"but people who wanted to live here, workhere and play here. These would be the besttype of businessmen to strengthen the econ-omy of the islands. (It is interesting to notethat there were less than 100 voters inSanibel in Precinct 16 in 1954, but thevision for future development was being putin place.)

The first formal meeting of the sub-scribers (board of directors) of the Sanibel-Captiva Islands Business Association washeld on Nov. 26, 1954.

The subscribers agreed upon two stand-ing committees—finance and publicity.Since there were no banks on the islands, the First National Bank of Fort Myers was

On Dec. 29, 1954 the Sanibel-CaptivaIslands Business Association was officiallygranted a charter by Circuit Court JudgeLynn Gerald with 39 charter members in theorganization.

At the general meeting on April 11, 1955it was with much pride that Stahlin said,"Two months lapse from the inception of the

. idea to the granting of the charter appears tobe a decided accomplishment and has set thetone for the character and willingness of thisgroup to work toward their goal."

The proposed budget totalling $3,000was approved by the directors for presenta-tion at the first general meeting. However, dues, in the amount of $ 1,365 had been paid, and the treasurer reported a bank balance of$1,189.70 after expenditures. The solesource of budget revenue depended upondues, and membership was limited to"licensed businesses" on the islands. As aresult, each budget during the following twoyears was well below $3,000 with deficitsoccurring each year.

Bailey declared, "Before the annualmeeting in 1955, the board sat in my livingroom until 3 a.m. trying to raise $3,000 indues, but they came up with nothing!"

Stahun's presidency from 1954-57 canbe described as highly ambitious not only inthe forming of the association (also known •by its anacronysm SCIBA) but in the widechoice of projects that the board undertookranging from better road maintenance, mos-quito control, advertising, zoning, incorpo-ration and the subject of a causeway or

bridge to the Islands.Road maintenance of the unpaved gravel

roads was an ongoing problem. There wasa plan for grading these roads, but it neededcloser supervision. Billheimer and his RoadMaintenance Committee studied themileage of gravel roads on Sanibel andCaptiva and the amount of work needed tokeep them in good condition. Their studyconcluded that a grader could do all of theseroads every other day. The view of the asso-ciation was to use the influence of the orga-nization to get the roads paved with the ulti-mate goal of hard surfacing all roads.

Bailey, with a bit of a smile, commentedthat the faster you went over these wash-board roads, the smoother you would go andthemore bumps you created!'

In the late 40s and continuing into thenext decade, mosquito control, a persistentand unsolved problem, improved withextensive research completed by the county, and a recommendation was made to run adrag-line "on Sanibel and Captiva. At thegeneral meeting in 1955 President Stahlintold the members, "We are pleased to notethat mosquito control for the Islands is nowbecoming a reality, and we feel our associa-tion should cooperate in every way to aidthis effort."

With road improvement and better mos-quito control, the association had inaugurat-ed a publicity committee under the chair-manship of R. A. Monteith to acquire threebillboard displays convering the three mainapproaches to Fort Myers and a fourth dis-.

play oh McGregor Boulevard. Bailey point-ed out the importance of advertising from alldirections: north, south, east and west.

Also, the board agreed that summeradvertising should be directed to the centralpart of the state since that was the most pro-ductive area for summer beach business. The Orlando Sentinel was agreeable to car-rying news releases, publicity and paidadvertising. The third choice for advertisingwas the printing of 10,000 island brochuresat a cost of $420.

Bailsy pointed out that until the mid-50'sthe islands had been a winter resort only. Insummer everything closed down. With theadvent of mosquito control and air condi-tioning, it was time to attract people in sum-mer. An article in a magazine called Cornetbrought a spurt in tourism, and Look did acenterfold page which Francis Bailey hasframed in his office called "Beach Harvestin the 50s."

Bailey can proudly point to and nameeach person in "Beach Harvest" includingboard members and community residents!Indeed, tourism was coming into its own asa growing source of revenue for the Islands.

As early as March 1955 the possibilitiesof regulating zoning were discussed by theboard toward the end that Sanibel andCaptiva be maintained as they are and thatnew businesses and new homes be zoned tokeep them in line with the present atmos-phere of the islands. Much of this wasprompted by the possibility of a causewaywhich would change the islands radically.

The following year in 1956 the boardagreed that zoning could best be accom-plished through incorporation. One prob-lem was that the list of freeholders, regis-tered voters as obtained from the tax asses-sor's office, showed a few short of the 150required for incorporation. After furtherdeliberation the board decided that the taskof incorporation was too great for the asso-ciation to handle, and it would require paid, professional help to plan proper zoning.

Most certainly, this first board of direc-tors under the leadership of Paul Stahlin hadthe vision to plan for the future welfare ofthe islands. They selected the salient prob-lems: road maintenance, mosquito control, zoning and incorporation as the primaryproblems to be solved for the preservationof the Islands. From its beginning the -Sanibel-Captiva Islands BusinessAssociation was becoming well known andits members recognized as business andcommunity leaders.

Familiar face, natural talentBy Jill GoodmanStaff Writer

Victor Legarreta is a familiar faceon local stages, frequentlydelighting audiences at the Old

Schoolhouse Theater and at the OffBroadway Palm.

The Naples resident grew up in Islip,Long Island where he hit the boards in highschool as a Jet in "West Side Story."

A ye :ir later he made his first paid perfor-mance in "Snow White" as none other than"Prince Charming," Now hooked on showbusiness, he continued to perform in schoolshows as well with the Broad HollowTheater in Rockville Center,

Legarreta said that his father had a finetenor voice and wanted to pursue a singingcareer but was discouraged by family pres-sure. Although he died when Legarreta wasonly 10 years old, he remembers himsinging and he Feels that in developing hisown career, he is ajso paying a tribute to hisfather.

"When I do a show, I say, 'this is forhim.' He is the driving force."

Legarreta said he has never had any for-mal training.

"If I like something somebody does, atap step for example, I ask them to show me

how to do it. Also in voice . . . if I enjoy thestyle, quality or sound of someone's voice, Itry to mimic them and fit it to my voice."

He doesn't take his natural talents forgranted and devotes untold hours to honinghis craft.

"Tapping is one of my strong points. Inall the shows that I have done I have learnedall the steps from somebody. If I'm at the(Off) Broadway Palm doing a show there, Igo in early and just tap for an hour and workon steps that I have been taught."

Realizing he learns better from friends in .a one on one situation, he hopes to find theright teacher one day and take lessons. "Icould only get better," he said with a smile.

Although he enjoys performing in musi-cal, comedies because he likes to make peo-ple laugh he said he prefers being.perchedon a stool singing songs from the 1940s,Sinatra-style.

Legarreta said he has never felt uncom-fortable with a skit or part no matter howoutrageous it may be.

In a skit for "Sanibel Night Fever," a1970s revue written by Artistic Director J. T.Smith and currently on stage at the OldSchoolhouse Theater, he dresses as EdithBunker (with a beard and mustache) andalong with "Archie," Miguel Cintron, doesa sidesplitting rendition of the theme song to

"It's primarily a night club and we triedout the show there basically as a work inprogress. They liked it so much, they askedme to take it to Pennsylvania for NewYear's Eve," he said. Legarreta's revue,"Yesterdays" is scheduled to be on the stage'at the Broadway Palm Sept. 7-Oct. 7.

"It's very J. T. Smith," Legarreta said, adding, "J. T. has taught me so much. Icame to him at 19 and he taught me every-thing.

"He challenged me and made me expandso much as an actor. I'm just taking what hetaught me for my own use. Of course, whenyou see ("Yesterdays") it's very J.T. becausehis system is excellent."

Legarreta said Pia helped with therewriting. "He has done wonders with it"and Pin will also be in the show.

Legarreta is single and maintains a prag-matic view about "his future in show busi-ness.

"i do have aspirations (but) I never try to

plan out, like a year in advance. I don't tryto push or rush things; I kind of let God takeme where he's going to take me.

"If it doesn't feel right, I won't do it.Right now I have a good feeling about thecruise ship."

He said he does not want to go to NewYork and wait on tables hoping for the "bigbreak" with a stage production. "If I'mgoing to go to New York, I'm going finan-cially stable and I'll give it six months to ayear." •

Legarreta added, "I've met so manyincredible people down here and I'm happy.

"The most important thing is to behappy. Success is only measured by whatyou feel it is. If I'm making people smile inthe show, I've done my job for the night."

Tuesday Tappers having big fun at BIG ArtsBy Camille KucabaStaff Writer

From the time I was a tiny tot, Iknew what I wanted to be when Igrew up.

Either a fashion designer, a foreign cor-respondent or a dancer.

I practiced for the first profession bysuperimposing my own creations on the.traced figures of paper dolls a la the DorisDay look and Edith Head couture.

Intrigue intrigued me, and sometimes Islunk around in an oversized trench coat, clutching a notebook and "writing" aboutclandestine goings on.

The dance? Oh, I leapt and sashayed andotherwise mimicked the real thing. I was theoriginal karaoke kid—dancing, not singing,to records and the radio. Mom recognizedthe talent and signed me up for tons oflessons...acrobatic, tap, ballet. I loved it.

By the early teen years, I jitterbuggedand rocked and rolled with the best of 'em.High school found me in the chorus line ofour infamous "Varsity Show." And in col-lege, modern, dance took over. One of myfondest memories: performing outdoors on

the concrete deck of Chicago's Navy Pier, our backdrop the sparkling waters of LakeMichigan. (Yes, it was summertime.)

So where is this all leading? To the BIGArts adult tap class, of course!

Over the years I took a few tap lessonsand joined an adult class more than once, always for fun and the fantastic workout. The BIG Arts sessions are no different. AmI still having fun? You bet.

Every Tuesday morning from 8 to 9:30,Vanessa Stacker leads our group, in warmupexercises, repetitive practice shuffles and aquick review of more complicated steps, segueing into a loose "routine" executedmuch better by my classmates than by.me.

But I'm a trooper. I buy a pair of tapshoes, I throw the plywood down on thelanai floor on a Saturday morning and dili-gently drum out the flap step, flap ball-change, flap, shuffle shuffle, ball-change,flap, etc., etc., until the sweat rolls.

Determined to master a few basics (hey,it's great exercise), I keep at it, Tuesday, mornings with Vanessa and my tap compan-ions, Saturdays, even Sundays on the ply-wood, tap, tap, tapping away.

And, yes, I'm still having fun.

AT LEFT: EliotSugerman, AlexGarrett andDolores Harper(from left) arethree in thegroup ofTuesday morn-ing tappers atBIG Arts.

Music pulls it all together. The class fea-tures popular favorites like "AnythingGoes" and "If My Friends Could See MeNow" (oh, yeah!). At home I toss on a CDand turn it up loud. Gets the spirit moving.

Back in class, the spirit is willing, but, evidently, I haven't practiced enough.

Our summer tap group is comprised ofover-50 women who do it for the fun and theexercise, just like I do. But they've been atit longer and are infinitely more accom-plished.

Catching up with these tappers after classone morning, I' asked them why they'rehere.

Alex Garret, a dynamo who admits herage at 70 plus, has been tapping since 1993.

"I had never tapped before until a frienddragged me to a class." Alex said. "I hadalways been physical. I. liked the idea of achallenge—learning something new at myage. Tapping is creative. With the music andall, it feels like your body goes to heaven."

Camille Kucaba

She and Dolores Harper, who's been tap-ping since 1991, take classes on a regularbasis. Tap is a creative outlet for Dolores,too...and great exercise. She even choreo-graphed her own solo to "New York, NewYork." Both women practice regularly, especially as "showtime" approaches. Bothperform for various clubs and seniorsgroups.

Eliot Sugerman's been tapping for fiveyears now, again for the fun and the exer-cise. "My teacher once called it 'brain exer-cise,'" she laughs.

I detect an underlying seriousness, too.Yes, we're all having fun. But we're alsointent on getting up on that stage and"lookin' good."

To me, tap is intrigue for the soul.

Classes continue at BIG Arts throughOct. 3. Cost for a six-week series is $60, sin-gle sessions $12. Call 395-0900.

Imagination ConstipationAny artist, beginner or professional,

will experience times when ideasfor a painting refuse to material-

ize and the big clean, expen-sive sheet of white paper sitslike an unmet challenge.

For a professional artistwith deadlines and produc-tion requirements, "imagina-tion constipation" can becostly; for beginners andhobbiests, not knowingwhere to start, can be justplain frustrating.

I have, over the years, developed methods to kick-start creativity and breakthrough the barriers thatoccur during the process ofcreating a finished painting.

The first thing to remem-ber is that painting should beconcerned with process notproduct. It is the journey notthe outcome that is impor-tant. Sometimes you will cre-ate a masterpiece, but muchof the time a painting will bea great learning adventure that will be con-signed to the collage pile.

I never throw a painting away. Paintings

I put away today may someday be complet-ed when my skills are more developed.Conversely, it can be very gratifying to rip a

particularly stubborn paint-ing into pieces for a collage.

One of my favorite meth-ods for maintaining spon-taneity, is to work on at leastthree paintings at the sametime. If I become "stuck" onone, I move to the next. Inthis way, I avoid overwork-ing a painting or experienc-ing painter's block.

It is important to remem-ber that almost every paint-ing will reach an "ugly duck-ling" stage, At this stage, thepainting will appear to be toofrustrating, confusing or uglyto finish. At this point, remember painting is aboutprocess not product and pushonward.

I use three helpful tools, white chalk, small mats andheavy plastic or plexiglasssheets.

With chalk, I actually draw onto thepainting defining areas that work and thosethat don't. The chalk guides me to the next

step and dissolves when' I apply paint. I usesmall mats to isolate areas that are workingin the composition as I move them aroundthe painting, helping me to concentrate onareas that don't work. •

Using plexiglass or thick plastic sheetsplaced over a painting, allows me to paintover areas to see what effect will be pro-duced without placing paint directly on thepainting. If I like the effect achieved, Iremove the plastic and paint directly ontothe painting.

One last barrier breaker. . . .1 use differ-ent colors and shapes of collage pieces tomove around a painting enabling me to seewhere I might paint in a shape or colors toresolve the composition.

Most importantly, remember it's onlypaper; painting is a journey, so enjoy.

Summer lime —a good time to read

It's summer time and the livin' is'easy. Many of the area theaters are darkand in. between shows right now, so,

it's a good time for me to kick back with agood book or two and enjoy my nice, cool, air conditioned living room.

• I've come across a lot of good bookslately including one I bought, sans jacket, atthe Sanibel Library in their retail room foronly 50 cents.

"Losing Julia," Jonathan Hull's firstnovel (Delacorte Press, $25.95) is one of themore poignant stories I've read in a whilesince "Tuesdays with Morrie" or any one ofthe little "memoir-style" books that havebeen published lately. .

Supposedly this is fiction, but the storyline, certainly could be based on fact and I'dlike to think it is a memoir in disguise.

Eighty-year-old Patrick Delaney, dyingfrom cancer and living in a nursing home, tells Ihe reader about his life and lifelonglove for Julia.

He takes us back to World War I and werelive the horrors of war with him as a 19-year-old in the trenches; Hull paints vividword pictures of the savagery of war and ilic•pitiful reaction of a teenaged boy.

He brings us back to the present and theindignities of living in a nursing home; theindifference of his children and the bondsmade with icllow residents that, so often, are abruptly severed by death.

• Camille Kucaba, staff writer for theShopper's Guide loaned me the most unusu-al set of books I have ever had the pleasureof reading.

In the first book of the trilogy by NickBantock (Chronicle Books $17.95, boxedtrilogy $49.95), "Griffin & Sabine," we areintroduced to a couple by reading their mail..

With a devilish sense of voyeurism, weread their postcards and open envelopes tosnoop through their love letters as they cor-respond from afar. Griffin Moss is a post 'card designer living in London and SabineStrohem, who designs postage stamps liveson Sicmon Island in the South Pacific.

Throughout all three books, the loversmake several attempts'to physically meeteach other. The correspondence goes on forsome years but whenever they set a timeand place to meet, something very odd hap-pens.

Bird Diary

The story is a fantasy with very surrealevents, but the concept of reading love let-ters and following the course of their affairis irresistible, especially since the readerisn't breaking any postal laws.

Bantock did all the illustrations in thebook and they are beautiful . . . filled withsymbolism and mystery.

Although these books are a quick read, Iwent back over them, opening envelopesand examining the art for several days.

As a gift for yourself or a hostess gift, these books a fine addition to a book shelfbecause they will be read and re-read,whenever you need a trip to fantasy land.

If our island bookstores, Sanibel IslandBookshop, Macintosh Book Shop, and theIsland Book Nook, don't have these booksin stock, they said they would be happy toorder them for you.

Case o f . . . Ghosts of 1812My family and I have been on

vacation this summer and ourtrip through the northeast has

taken us to a few interestingand historical places. Onesuch place was to an oldstone row of military bar-racks in Sackets Harbor,New York. Here we foundthat one of the barracks hadbeen turned into a restau-rant. It's a historic locationand was built just before theWar of 1812.

In fact this site saw heavybloodshed during that war.The base was used as a mili-tary post until the end ofWorld War II, after which itwas closed and abandoned.

After forty years of disre-pair, the old historic basewas bought in the mid-1980's and the buildingswere restored for condos, amarina, a gym, a bank, a gro-cery and two restaurants. And in the last 15 years thatliving folks having been using these oldstone buildings, there have been hundredsof ghosts sightings. Including, as it turnsout, in the little place where we hud dinner.

Now I want to assure you that not everyold building has ghosts. And despite myweekly column, I am a skeptic. By that, Imean I always look to explain the unex-plainable. But when a genuine mystery aris-es, I'm open enough to recognize it forw/i;it it i.s—unii in this ca.se, il was clearly aghost.

The first clue that we had that we weredining with a free floating spirit came short-ly after we had finished our main course. We were sitting back waiting for our coffeewhen a sudden chill moved in behind myhusband. "You feel that?" he asked."What?" I asked and looked at him. He

turned his head to one side checking aboveand behind for an A/C vent, but there was-n't one. We later found out these old build-

ings only have heat vents andthey are located in the floor."Touch my shoulder," heasked. So I reached over torub his back and was startledby the chill that sank rightthrough my long sleeve. Ijerked away my hand, "E-ow. What's that?" I asked."Don't know," he said, stillrubbing the cold that sur-rounded his shoulders.

"Oh, my." Now my hus-band looked even more star-tled. "You're not going tobelieve this, but my chair ismoving," he said.

Well he was right, I didn'tbelieve him. I mean, here wewere sitting in a well-lit,mostly filled restaurant, andmy husband was having apoltergeist experience. So Iglanced down at his chair andpaused. It was moving. In

fact, it was leaving small scratch marks as itcrossed the wood floor and inched intowards the table. "Oh come on, you'redoing this," I teased, and looked to seewhere his feet were. But much to my sur-prise, he had lifted his feet and the chair wasstill moving. I watched amazed as my hus-band and chair moved a total of five inches."So what do think it is?" he asked. "A pushyghost." I answered.

A moment later, our waitress came withthe coffee. I didn't want to feel like an idiotbut I just had to ask. "So, hey, um, is yourrestaurant haunted?"

She paused and tossed her head to oneside before answering, "Some of us think

Lions award scholarshipsThe Sanibel-Captiva Lions Club

has awarded its 2000-2001 FrancisBailey scholarships of $1,000 eachto five area students: Suzanne M.Kuapp, Jessica Laine, Michael Pitt,Joanna V. Theiss, Laura Zocki.

Jim Graham, chairman of theLions' scholarship committee, saidthat funding for the scholarshipscomes from an endowment fundnamed to honor Lion Francis.Bailey, a charter member of theclub. In addition to awarding thescholarships, the Lions added

another $9,000 to the principal ofthe Bailey Scholarship Fund.

These awards bring to $14,000the value of scholarships given bythe club this year. Earlier, the Lionsgranted nine scholarships of $1,000each to visually impaired or other-wise handicapped students at ECC.

Funding for them comes fromthe club's annual donations budget. This year San-Cap' Lions con-tributed well over $45,000 to local, area, state and national causes.

Paranornal Detective from page 22

so. Why do you ask?""Just a feeling," my husband answered. I did

not want to give her too much information, sincethe first rule to investigating any paranormal expe-rience is never to lead a witness on with your ownview point? "Can you tell me what you've seen?"

"Sure. Two days ago another girl and I wereupstairs filling salt shakers when one like this —"she pointed to the salt shaker on our table, "justflew off and hit the wall. A second one still on thetable just exploded. Well, that did it for fillingshakers at night. Now 1 fill 'em in the morning."

"Anything else?" I asked. Our waitress laughed. "The" grounds out back,"

she pointed out the window that has a view of theparade lawn. "Some of the people here say they'veseen the ghost of a young Ulysses S. Grant gallop-ing on his ghost horse. They say he used to do thatwhen he was looking over the troops that were sta-tioned here. Over there, that building was the firstmilitary hospital in the United States. I don't thinkthe medicine was very good, 'cause the militarycemetery was pretty big when they moved it."

"The cemetery was here? And they moved it?"I asked.

"Yeah. About a mile away."I was beginning to understand why this lovely

little restaurant was haunted. "Tell me, are there alot of ghost sightings around here?"

"Sure, Everybody has seen something. Butnothing evil, you know. Just things." She then leftus to help another customer.

"Is this sort of thing common?" my husbandsaid still rubbing his neck from the cold. I thought

about it. Many places, not just old ones, haveghosts. Usually it's when the spirit feels it needs tostay behind because of loved ones or if the deathwas tragic like murder or suicide. And they seemto break down into two basic kinds of manifesta-tion. The first, like the one that pushed in my hus-band's chair, acts like something invisible that isactually there. It goes bump in the night, or turnson the TV, or opens and closes doors.

The other kind is more like an endless filmloop, repeating and repeating the same pattern —walking the same steps, peering out the same win-dow, marching through the same battle — evenwhen the site is rebuilt around it.

"It's common enough," I told my husband."Especially where there's been violence."

"Well, I'm sure a base that held 3,000 men hadit share of troubles."

"Yeah, plus if they moved the cemetery ANDthis was a battlefield in the war of 1812, it's nowonder they have such a high rate of strange phe- •nomena. Guess you can count yourself lucky yourghost only pushed your chair in."

"Yeah, I'll bet this was officer's quarters and Ihad the ghost of manners and etiquette. Imaginewhat happens down at the gym when the ghost ofsome old gunnery sergeant starts slinging the bar-bells."

I smiled and patted his stomach. "Maybe you'llstay lucky," I said, "and next time they'll push youaway from the table." • • ' • . .

My husband frowned. "That's the kind .ofremark," he said, "that can come back to hauntyou."

The bidding:South West North EastI f Pass 1 * Pass2 V Pass 2 * Pass2 NT Pass 3 NTOpening lead — four of clubs.

The basic purpose of a safetyplay is to try to protect against anunfavorable distribution of theadverse cardB. For example, ifdeclarer has K-Q-10-x-x of a suitfacing dummy's A-9-x-x, he canassure five tricks by first cashing

Jl^iilWIilf^'liayiii^the ace first, he could no longerscore all five tricks in the suit if hisleft-hand opponentstarted withJ-x-x-x.

In another form of safety play, declarer may intentionally con-

cede a trick he might not have tolose in order to guard against an"unfavorable division. Today's handfeatures a play of this type.

The declarerwas Harold Ogust,New York expert, and he reachedthree notrump on the biddingshown. West led a club, won bySouth with the queen, and Ogustshrewdly resisted the temptationto cash the K-Q of spades in thehope of scoring six spade tricks.

Instead, he cashed the king andthen overtook the queen withdummy's ace! Had the opposingspades divided 3-2, he would haveplayed a third round to assure ninetricks.

But East showed out on theace of spades, and now the wisdomof Ogust's farsighted safety playcame to fruition. He led the ten ofdiamonds from dummy, and theopponents were helpless.

If East covered the ten withthe queen, Ogust would win withthe ace and return the jack of dia-monds to guarantee nine tricksconsisting of two spades, one heart,(our diamonds and two dubs.

And if East played \<vw on theten of diamonds, Ogust would makethd $me^etk0te, afar, losingthe ten to West's Jdflg, by laterrepeating the diamond finesse.

Had Ogust cashed the K-Q ofspades at the start—* as most play-ers impulsively wouldhdve done —he almost surely would have gonedown.
