Dear Chronicle Readers, Sometimes I think it feels like a day ago when we started 2019 but now were already in the last week of Term 2! In the past few days weve enjoyed a Formal Assembly which celebrated many of the amazing things our students do outside school, and watched performances and items from some of our wonderful College classes and groups. I would encourage you to try and attend the next Formal Assembly if you have the opportunity. Another enjoyable (but very very cold) day was held last Friday with the Primary Athletics Carnival. It was excellent that the children were willing to give it a go even though some were nervous. I loved seeing the encouragement as they wished each other well. Thank you to the many people who could come and watch; the teachers who supervised the events; Mr Cunningham who led the team organising the day; Ms Clarke for record keeping and points scoring; and the wonderful older students who managed the White Dove Café and helped in many different ways on the day. Mrs Katelyn Weston has been an amazing support to us in the reception area and more recently leading the College in many of our communication areas. She is responsible for compiling and publishing the Chronicle each week plus designing the fantastic posters around the College and on our terrific Kooringal Road sign. I am thrilled to hear she is intent on continuing studies in communication and I look forward to seeing her skills continue to flourish. This week each family will receive a copy of Nurture, a publication of Christian Education National. This edition covers a variety of topics from competition in the classroom and on the sports field, to the contentious issue of religious freedom. Dear Chronicle Readers,

Sometimes I think it feels like a day ago when we started 2019 but now we’re already in the last

week of Term 2!

In the past few days we’ve enjoyed a

Formal Assembly which celebrated many of

the amazing things our students do outside

school, and watched performances and items from some of

our wonderful College classes and groups. I would

encourage you to try and attend the next Formal Assembly if

you have the opportunity.

Another enjoyable (but very very cold) day was held last

Friday with the Primary Athletics Carnival. I particularly

enjoyed being at the start line and cheering on the children

beginning the 70m and 100m sprint. It was excellent that the

children were willing to give it a go even though some were

nervous. I loved seeing the encouragement as they wished

each other well. Thank you to the many people who could

come and watch; the teachers who supervised the events; Mr

Cunningham who led the team organising the day; Ms Clarke

for record keeping and points scoring; and the wonderful

older students who managed the White Dove Café and helped in many different

ways on the day.

This week sees the fun and learning continue, and I hope

we will be able to share with you the great news later this

week that our new Junior School rooms are available for us

to use! Stay tuned to Facebook for a sneak peak in the

next few days.

The last bit of news from me for this part of our Chronicle is

to let you know that one of our valuable staff members is

sadly leaving us to pursue further studies. Mrs Katelyn

Weston has been an amazing support to us in the

reception area and more recently leading the College in

many of our communication areas. She is responsible for

compiling and publishing the Chronicle each week plus

designing the fantastic posters around the College and on

our terrific Kooringal Road sign. I am thrilled to hear she is

intent on continuing studies in communication and I look

forward to seeing her skills continue to flourish.

This week each family will receive a copy of Nurture, a publication of Christian Education National. This edition

covers a variety of topics from competition in the classroom and on the sports field, to the contentious issue of

religious freedom. I encourage you to delve into this magazine over the break and hear from our sister schools

around the country.

I wish you well in the upcoming holidays. I trust you will have a chance to rest (and stay warm). Please pray for

our staff as they have a Training and Development week which includes some of us travelling to Adelaide for an

international Christian school conference. Term 3 begins on Monday 22 July and it will be a Week A.

Our Junior School classes have been competing against one another to collect the most stickers, collection for

class competitions have now closed and winners will be announced shortly. As you can see above the leader

board, as of last Friday had 4F just edging out 4J.

Stickers will be accepted until Friday 28 June at the College Office and will be added to the total College

collection. All stickers will be collated and sent away during the holidays. We are very excited about placing our

order and will let you know of our purchase when it arrives! Thank you for supporting this initiative.

School Banking

Reminder

Don’t forget that Friday is School Banking day and

students should bring in their weekly deposit. For

every deposit made at school, no matter how big or

small, students will receive a silver Dollarmites token.

Once students have individually collected 10 tokens

they can redeem them for an exclusive School Banking

reward item in recognition of their regular savings

habits.

If you would like to know more about School Banking,

please ask for a 2019 School Banking program

information pack from the College Office or visit

commbank.com.au/schoolbanking

When a student is leaving the College, whether due to moving from Wagga Wagga or to another school, one

terms notice of departure must be provided in writing to the College. ‘Notification of Student Departure’ forms

can be obtained from the College Office.

In the event that notice is not provided a ‘withdrawal fee’ equivalent to one terms fees will apply. This represents

a genuine estimate of costs the College will incur where the required notice has not been given.

Bunnings BBQ The Cattle Team worked tirelessly under the guidance of some very capable

parents at the Bunnings BBQ on

Saturday raising money for the upcoming

Melbourne Show parading and Hoof and

Hook event in September.

A special thank you to the Nugent family,

the Riley family, the Caskie family, the

Cox Family and the Graham family who

did the brunt of the hard work leading up

to and on the day. Thank you for

supporting them with your purchases.

$1,000 was raised to support the team.

Music to the Ears!

Our Years 3 to 6 students enjoyed a great musical experience recently when the Riverina Conservatorium of Music (RCM) Youth Orchestra came to perform at our school on Wednesday 19 June. The orchestra members are students from across the Riverina, including many of our College secondary string players, supported by RCM staff and parents. The conductor, Mr Keith Griffin, led students through a number of pieces showcasing various orchestral instruments.

As well as hearing great examples of orchestral music, students were given demonstrations by members of the orchestra illustrating each instrument’s unique sound and range. The concert culminated in a performance of the well-known 1st movement from Beethoven’s 5th Symphony. In preparation for this, one of our students, Mohamed Mohamed, was given the chance to conduct the orchestra. He was followed by Mr Blake Cunningham, teacher of Year 5/6C – ask the students about how successful he was . . .

We are very appreciative for our continuing partnership with the RCM and especially grateful for all the performers and the great concert they brought to us. A big thank you to Ms Jenny Binovec and Mr Hamish Tait for their support of the event as well.

Programming Championship

Last Friday three Year 9 computing students Sophie Fletcher, Anna Irish and Adam Bowden competed in the inaugural Riverina Programming Championship against three other local High Schools. They successfully completed 8 of the 13 Python challenges via an online challenge platform and placed 6

th

on the day.

There were a wide variety of challenges to complete in a two hour timeframe. Students used their strengths, working both independently and in a team, as they sought to solve the problems presented. One example of a challenge the team successfully solved was the development of a coding, that enabled the computer to print the 4 times tables.

The Championship was open to Year 9 and 10 students, so Anna is looking forward to giving the competition another go next year. “The day was more than working through the problems. Lecturers from CSU spoke about how coding skills can apply to our lives. One of the talks focused on the increase in the number of jobs which are technology focused and the specialist skills which these careers require.”

All students had a great time and ate lots of amazing food as well. Big thanks to CSU Agritech for hosting the day. Stephen Gilmour Business Studies Teacher

Rotary Changeover Dinner Each year the South Wagga Rotary Club invites the College to provide some musical entertainment at their annual Changeover Dinner. We’ve been contributing to this evening for over 10 years, and many of our young musicians have been able to enjoy this valuable performance opportunity.

Apart from providing a meal for the musicians, the club has made donations towards our Music Department for several years, and this year was no exception. Held on Monday 17

June at the Range

Function Centre, the event is attended by Rotary members and their wives, as well as community and local organisation representatives who receive some of the fundraising undertaken by the club throughout the year. Liam Perry (electric bass and backing vocals), Caleb Skewes (electric guitar and vocals), and Ari Karaoulis (drums) performed a great mix of pieces, including some of their own compositions. They were sensitive to the atmosphere of the evening and capably improvised on many occasions. The club publicly expressed their gratitude to the students and the College for its ongoing support. Year 10 “Go to War”!

Some time ago Year 10 English completed a genre study based on “War”. Students read a novel, watched a film and read some poems based on the theme of war. Among their response tasks to these texts was the requirement to write a critical essay comparing the representation of war in the film and novel versions of the same text. They were also asked to write creatively about what they imagined a war experience might be like.

War veterans came and spoke to the students earlier in the term and shared their real world war experiences. As an assessment response to this genre study students were asked to formulate their own concept of what war might be like, as it is actually experienced by ordinary soldiers. They were then asked to express that concept visually and reflect upon the visual and literary techniques they had used in their representations. Below are some examples of their efforts.

Mr David Hancock Senior English Teacher

Careers Expo Year 10-12 students recently enjoyed an excursion to the Careers Expo held at the Range Function Centre. Representatives from universities, TAFE, colleges, industry and employment support services were present to answer questions and provide valuable information about career and employment options available for students interested in further study, or moving straight into the workforce. For a bit of fun, the TAFE stand was running a competition to see who could row 500m the fastest. Jacob Mills was able to do this in 1 min 29 sec and put his name at the top of the scoreboard! Overall, students found the day helpful and informative, taking the opportunity to gather handouts and pens!

Graduation Dinner

Last Friday was the culmination of the Student Leaders Program run by the Committee 4 Wagga. After completing their final module during the day, a graduation dinner was held at Magpie’s Nest Restaurant. Year 11 student, Paul Anderson, was in the graduating group, and attended the dinner along with Mrs Anderson, Mrs Smedley and Ms Clarke. During the course of the evening, each of the students gave a presentation on an aspect of the program. Paul spoke confidently on having purpose as a necessary component of leadership. This course is a wonderful opportunity to equip young people for leadership roles. This is only the fourth time this course has been run, being strongly supported by local businesses, with the aim of raising up confident young leaders to serve in our community.

Workplace Health and Safety The College values our partnership with parents and we thank Brett Hoare from SafeWork NSW for priortising his time to come and speak with our Year 11 and 12 students this week and Year 9 and 10 in May, about Workplace Health and Safety. These senior students are at a stage where they are working casual jobs, and having an understanding of what their rights and responsibilities are around safety in the workplace is important. Mr Hoare left our students with three main areas of advice for Workplace Health and Safety:

ASK—ask for help if you don’t know what to do or if you are unsure about safety

FOLLOW—follow the workplace procedures and guidelines for safety

REPORT—report anything that you think is not safe. Thank you to Mr Hoare for sharing this valuable information with our Senior students and teachers.

After months of much hard work and input from many, the new Year 1 and 2 classrooms are close to completion. Moving date is this Friday 28 June, when Year 1 and 2 students will enjoy shifting their work and resources into their new space! How exciting!!

After the completion of the vinyl floors, the tiling of the splashbacks, the finishing touches on the cupboards and making all the right electrical connections, the interior of the buildings are currently being cleaned. Today concrete is also being poured outside in the outdoor classroom space.

During the holidays the final design for the landscaping will be wrapped up (with considerations from the winning Junior School class from the Earn and Learn Competition about which equipment will be included in the playground!).

We look forward to being able to welcome you into the new classroom spaces early in Term 3.
