WEEK 9 TERM 2
17 June 2020
Makerspace
Exciting news! Phase two of our Makerspace construction is
underway. This has been a long term project that was initiated by
our School Council and is now coming to life. Our P&C have been
instrumental in making our vision become a reality as they have
funded the vast majority of this project.
It started with the construction of the Makerspace roof which was
completed last year (approximately $90,000) and will be completed
in the very near future with the fit out of the storage and learning
space (approximately another $90,000). This will be an amazing,
flexible learning space to prepare our students with the critical 21st
Century skills in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering
and Maths (STEM). Our students will enjoy exploring curiosity,
learning, collaborating, problem solving and creating. Our
Makerspace is designed to empower students to stretch
themselves and to be curious to solve, build, create and explore.
Over the last few weeks our students have been developing our
own design process, which will be a part of our official launch.
When asked what the Makerspace means to them, students have
expressed their excitement in having a place where they can think
and be curious, research and problem solve, become engineers
and scientists, and work together as reflective learners with a
growth mindset in a fun environment.
Once completed, our Makerspace will have a broad range of high-
tech equipment for our students to access - from 3D printers,
laptops, iPads and VR gear, to electronic kits, robots, drones and
more to come! It will also have lots of ‘no-tech’ resources including
paints, construction materials, Lego, craft resources and recycled
materials.
Spell-a-thon
Our P&C enhance our school in so many ways, ranging from air-
conditioning classrooms, enhancing playgrounds, construction of
the Makerspace and supporting learning through the purchase of
reading books and IT equipment. Of the 200 devices we lent out
during the learning at home period, almost all of them were
purchased by the P&C. They make a massive difference to the
learning environment, opportunities and outcomes for our students.
This year, the P&C’s ability to raise funds has been significantly
impacted as we are not able to have our Festival or Art Show, or
even sell raffle tickets at the Samford Show (as the school has
done for many years). The Spell-a-thon is perhaps the only
fundraiser for the year, so any support you can provide would be
greatly appreciated.
150th Celebration
Built by farmers, Samford State School opened in 1872 with only a
handful of students. Over the years, our school and our community
have grown and in 2022, Samford State School will celebrate
turning 150 years old.
We are planning a year of celebrations for 2022 to mark the history
of Samford State School and we would like to invite you to be a
part of this planning. A 150th celebration committee is being
created, working with the Samford Museum, and we are calling on
parents interested in helping collate and co-ordinate memorabilia
and activities to mark this special year.
If you would like to be a part of this planning committee, or if you
can share anything of value - historical photos, magazine articles,
items, or stories about Samford State School’s history - we would
love to hear from you. We are starting to gather information now,
so please email Belinda here.
Pick-Up Zone
There still seems to be some congestion at the pick-up zones as a
result of parents arriving early to pick up children. To solve this, it is
important to please time your pick-up.
Most children do not come out the gate at 3:00pm by the time
they’ve collected their bags and walked to the gate. If you arrive 5
minutes after the bell has gone, you will be surprised to see how
many cars have left the area. 10 minutes after the bell and you will
find you won’t have to wait at all. In fact, by 3:10pm, there is plenty
of parking available so skip the line and park.

Spell-a-thon Is Here!
IT’S SPELL-A-THON WEEK! The children are so excited to put their hard work onto paper and
raise funds for their school. Their spelling will be marked next Monday - thank you to those who
have volunteered to help mark papers - once they are marked, then pledges can be collected.
You can make the payment on QKR - just click on the link to 'Spellathon' in the P&C section and
input the amounts raised for each of your children. We will also accept cash if this is not possible,
but QKR is definitely our preferred method!
Father’s Day
Father's Day is 6 weeks away... Thankfully we are able to have the Father's
Day stall (on Thursday 27 August) as usual in the Seminar Room, where the
children will come class by class to choose a present for Dads/Grandads. The
kids absolutely LOVE this opportunity to pick something special out for their
Dad. We are calling for help running the stall - please sign up here to
volunteer an hour of your time here.

ICAS Assessments 2020
At the end of Term 2, parents of students in Year 3-6 received an email inviting their
child to participate in the upcoming UNSW ICAS assessments. The assessments are
designed to target students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in various
learning areas, with every student receiving a printed certificate and an online result
report.
ICAS assessments are now online, and if you would like your child to participate, please visit the new online Parent Payment System to
make a direct payment to UNSW Global. The website to visit is https://shop.unswglobal.com.au/pages/pps and you will need to enter the
school access code: NXA835, then enter your child’s name (make sure it is spelt correctly for the certificate), select the assessment/s and
then proceed to the payment page. Cost per test is $15.95 including GST.
Online parent payments closes Sunday, 2 August 2020 (extended from original closing date of 26 July 2020).
Below are the dates and times of the ICAS subject assessments. Assessments will be held in the R Lab (next to 4E classroom) at Samford

Student Leadership Values Project
At the beginning of this year, our Year 6 Student Leaders were fortunate enough to spend 2 days
at a leadership camp with other school leaders, where they were given the opportunity to create
and develop a project for the year.
Amelia L. explains “We wanted to build a culture around our school values and for these to
become a daily habit for all of our students and staff. So we came up with the idea of a values
project”.
These five values are: Citizenship, Curiosity, Growth Mindset, Kindness and Respect.
The leaders have created a ticket system where every teacher has a coupon book of vouchers,
which they hand out to students who have displayed any of the values. These are then collated
in each classroom, sorted and counted each week. There is one central values container so students can see how many values t ickets
have been collected throughout the school. There are also tips written on the back of each ticket to encourage and remind students on
how to earn more tickets relevant to each value.
The goal is to raise collectively 7,000 tickets in the school by Term 4. Once reached, the school will celebrate with a ‘Super Awesome
Mega Fun Day’. This will make up for the number of events and activities that have been cancelled this year due to Covid-19.
Interestingly, this project was developed and considered pre Covid-
19, however it has fitted perfectly into the school year, allowing the
student leaders to grow, share and develop this goal with all
students.
For now, it’s only for the Year 4 - Year 6 students but as we see a
return of revised year level assemblies, Prep – Year 3 students will
also begin to participate in the Values Project.
When asked why this was important to our school, the student
leaders said “We wanted to build on our culture and create something
visual. Culture is like a legacy that lasts”.
Our current total stands at 1,652 tickets. Clues will start to be
introduced to students as to what the celebration day will look like
and include. We look forward to sharing more about this leadership
initiative towards the end of the year.

How Curious Are You?
Curiosity is the motivation to seek out knowledge and new experiences as well as the willingness to
embrace the uncertainty that goes with it. We are all curious to some degree. You will undoubtedly
have different areas in life that you are more curious about than others. Perhaps you are naturally
curious about technology and don’t mind spending time figuring out how things work. Maybe you are
fascinated by human behaviour and seek to learn more about what drives our thinking and
motivation.
As humans we are naturally wired to be curious. Our curiosity can improve our relationships and
social understanding as well as our intelligence and problem solving abilities. Curiosity is also like a
muscle that gets stronger with practice.
3 Ways to Boost Curiosity
1. Don’t get furious, get curious!
Anger gets in the way of curiosity. Notice when you are having judgmental thoughts and try to switch your focus to what you are
observing without the judgement. It’s almost like acting the role of a scientist seeking out more information. Doing this can help
us to feel calmer and that’s when we do our best problem solving.
2. Embrace the unknown
How often do we give ourselves time to wonder? We live in such a fast paced world that we can feel an urgency to find answers
or solutions right away. When we do go searching for information, we often go looking for things that confirm what we already
think. By giving ourselves time to dwell on ideas and being open to explore new ways of thinking, despite feelings of uncertainty,
we can stretch our curiosity muscle.
3. Take Notice
We are only interested in the things that we pay attention to. Rocks are not interesting until we begin collecting them. People at
the shops aren’t interesting until we become curious about their lives and where they are going. We can develop our curiosity by
making a conscious effort to direct our attention to particular ideas or things around us. Challenge yourself to take notice and let
your curiosity grow.

Redeveloping Our Philosophy
Together with the educators and the children, we have been working on redeveloping our current philosophy.
All of last week we have been asking the children what they enjoy most about OSHC. Every educator in every
area has asked these questions to as many children as we can. The responses have been amazing, reflective
and thought provoking.

Some examples -
I like the educators.
Playing with friends.
Playing with the chickens.
Making Damper in the cob oven.
Planting in the garden.
Everything it is so much fun here.
Nature space, because you can play with the logs and branches.
Playing with the fairies.
Playing in the playground.
Going on excursions and doing fun activities in vacation care.
Being in Zen space and being calm and relaxing.
We will be asking our families for input into the redevelopment of our philosophy in the coming weeks so keep an out in your emails.
OSHC Educator Day
OSHC Educator Day is on 29 July 2020, this will be our inaugural celebration specifically dedicated to OSHC educators and the amazing
work that they do each and every day.
It would mean the world to our educators for you to acknowledge this by letting them know what an amazing job they are doing when you
see them around the school, at drop off and pick up times, and when you speak to them on the phone or via email.
