Week 8, Term 1 16/03/2021 Hi Everyone, How nice to have some rain on the horizon. My garden has been really needing the water! Lock Down I have spoken to many of the parent body over the last couple of days in relation to the lockdown which occurred on Monday. Thankfully, this is not a common occurrence for us but it is something that we do prepare for in our school. The safety of our students will always be paramount and it is equally important to us that parents have confidence in our school systems. Whilst the incident on Monday was upsetting, our priority was, and always will be, to reduce distress for school students whilst also working closely with other professionals in our community to provide support. A silver lining for me amongst the difficulty of the day was the care and concern which was shown by parents and staff, for all students involved. I know as a parent, I could easily put myself in the shoes of both families – one requiring support to recover from a traumatic incident and one requiring mental health support. I will continue to communicate closely with both families about what the future looks like for their child but for now we are working to ensure the wellbeing of all students and staff at the school. We have a school guidance officer available to us to provide counselling sessions for students and families. Please ring or email to let me know if you would like your child to see a counsellor. All staff, including our chaplain, will be checking in regularly with students. It is times like this, that the strong bonds which our school forms between staff and students are so important. I would encourage any parents with concerns regarding this incident to seek me out in the first instance to discuss. Astronomy Night We are looking forward to a fun evening of sharing science knowledge this Thursday night, starting at 5.30pm at the school. All family members are welcome and food orders need to be sent to the school ASAP. Whilst we hope to have an opportunity to see the stars and other heavenly bodies, this may be interrupted by rain. We will still go ahead with the event, however, even if this is the case, as we also have a guest speaker and a Space Quiz night planned! National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence

This Friday, all students are invited to wear orange in a show of solidarity for the statement Bullying! No Way! The staff at Depot Hill will use this National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence to teach lessons about what bullying is, and isn’t, and teach students strategies to deal with bullying should it arise. The curriculum also provides many resources about respectful relationships which we regularly teach our students. The children will also use this as a stimulus to for our next Writer of the week piece – a narrative about bullying.

Easter School Disco The Student Council is in the process of planning a disco for Friday, 26th March. The theme is Easter! All students are welcome to the EEC, where we will dance the night away from 6-8pm. Parents are welcome to drop students off at the door, as staff are supervising, and students are expected to stay inside the EEC at all times. Please return the attached pizza and popper order forms by next Wednesday, 24th March if you are planning to attend.

Have a great week.

YEAR P/1/2 CLASS

Hello Families, English Students are doing a great job tackling Part 2 of our English assessments – I’m very proud of their efforts. Last week students completed a retell of ‘The Very Blue Thingamajig’. This week they are writing a retell of the story ‘Too Loud Lily’. A verbal retell is the assessment for the Preps and a written retell is the assessment for the Year 1s. The Year 2 students actually have to write the main character (Lily) into a new story. This Friday is Bullying No Way Day so our writing will be about that topic and a student’s work will be selected for Writer in the Week.

Maths All students are preparing for assessment. Year 1s are looking at efficient methods of counting and Year 2s are investigating different ways of representing 3-digit numbers such as MABs and number lines. Preps are growing their knowledge of numbers 1-10, as well as their ability to pattern, sort and order.

All grades are looking at sequencing. See if your child can fill in the missing numbers for the relevant activity below… Preps 1, 2, ___, 4, ___, 6, 7, 8, ___, 10 Year 1s 31, 32, ___, 34, 35, ___, 37, 38, ___ Year 1 Challenge! 45, 46, 47, ___, 49, ___, 51, 52, ___. Year 2s 125, 126, 127, ____, 129, ____, 131, ____, 133. Year 2 Challenge! 196, 197, 198, ____, ____, 201, 202, ____, 204. 1000, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____. Have a fabulous week!

YEAR 4/5/6 CLASS

Dear Families, It’s hard to believe we are at Week 8 of term already! We are certainly on the down hill slope and catching plenty of speed as we head towards our final assessment pieces. In English, the students will begin to write their very own persuasive advertisement scripts for the breakfast cereal packages they have created. They have really loved this task and have shown some real creativity. Check our Jayden Harrison-Foster’s ‘Big Brain Brekky Bickys’!

Their persuasive script will need to have a greeting, 3 key points that will appeal to their audience and effective language features such as noun groups (sweet, delicious flakes), exaggeration (will make you run all day) and rhetorical questions (you wouldn’t want to miss out on this amazing offer, would you?). I look forward to seeing what the students create in the coming weeks and sharing them with you. In Maths, our focus is now on mapping where the students explore coordinate maps which include a compass and a Y and X axis. This week the students put their directional language and team work to the test as they worked together to guide their ‘robot’ team mate through the maze.

In Science, it has been very interesting exploring technologies and inventions that were first created for space travel. Did you know that many cordless devices like drills and vacuum cleaners where first used in space to collect samples? Piper found this great picture of astronauts and had this to say about cordless inventions “This invention has helped people to fix and mend things. There’s no electricity in space so they have to use cordless tools to fix stuff. Being cordless is good because you can use it anywhere and use it any time which makes life easier.”

I look to seeing everyone at the astronomy night on Thursday where special guest Wade Mann, a local Aboriginal elder, will share an indigenous perspective about all things up in the day and night sky. Have a great week!
