Student Leaders 2020 Last Tuesday morning, we held the Student Leadership and House Captain selection. Year 7
students delivered a three-minute oral presentation outlining what they would bring to a
Student Voice Leadership position. Our panel members of Miss Segat, Ms Fuss, Mr Cefai, Miss
Reena and two Year 7 students, made selections based on the presentations. Both Year 6
and 7 students were able to apply for House Captain positions. The panel members used a
selection criteria process to make their final decision.
Congratulations to our following leaders:

Year 7 to High School Transition Last week, I attended an information session on the upcoming Year 7 to high school move. At this session, it was
expressed that there would be regular communication with families over the next 18 months. Please find a link to
the latest information provided to all families, including an email address if you have any questions:

Play is the Way Wellbeing Update What do parents need to know?
Parkside has been following this methodology for two years. We are now entering our third year and our focus
will move into the 3Rs model: Reflect, Repair and Restitution.
Students work through a series of 6 Key Concepts with the Golden Rule underpinning them all, “Treat others as
you would like them to treat you.”
There are posters for these 6 Key Concepts and they are visible around the school. Parents can purchase their
own posters for their fridge at home.

Parkside Primary's Vision At Parkside Primary School we provide an inspirational, diverse and creative environment where students are challenged
to become confident, capable and productive contributors of society.
Students are the masters of their own wellbeing and behaviour. Asking them these questions will support the
reasons behind their decisions:
Am I doing the right or wrong thing?
Am I making a strong or weak decision?
Are my feelings in charge of actions or my thinking?
If you would like some more information, please feel free to contact me or visit the Play is the Way section of the
school website. I asked some students what they enjoy about Play is the Way and this is what they have said:
How has ‘Play is the Way’ helped you?
“It helps in games when we are trying to work as a team or having group discussions and the teacher can say,
"which Play is the Way concept is that?" It helps because it is an easy way to understand concepts like treating
others as you'd like to be treated. It is a great way of teaching us to be kind and respect others. Yay for Play is
the Way.”
“It has helped kids in our school so they know what bullying is and why you shouldn’t do it.”

An Update from the Maths Coach
Dear Parkside Families and Friends,
Our students are now 5 weeks into their mathematical development for 2020, and whilst they are seeing games,
problems, and rotations in their day to day learning experience, what should excite all involved, is the deep
knowledge teachers have behind these activities - knowledge of where each of the students are, and where each
of their next learning steps will be. Deep questioning, knowledge of the Big Ideas in Number and techniques to
support and stretch all students have all been part of the 2020 mathematical development for Parkside classrooms.
Staff began the year in training around questions to make students think and reason deeply in maths. These
questioning techniques, or Talk Moves extend students thinking past basic ask and recall habits. Many classrooms in
our school practice Number Talks before diving into a subject matter in a lesson, and these talks require students to
mentally solve or estimate a problem before discussing their thoughts. Talk Moves are an excellent way to enhance
these conversations, and could be used to prompt questioning on tasks at home, in the car, or between siblings.

At the core of our teaching is the Big Ideas in Number. The Big Ideas in Number (read more about it at
www.ppsmathsathome.com) for staff, stakeholders and students to develop in primary school are - in order: Trusting
the Count, Place Value, Multiplicative Thinking, Partitioning, Proportional Reasoning, and Generalising. Our teachers
plan, teach, and assess our students with these benchmark concepts in mind, knowing that giving students a firm
grasp of fundamental developmental stages will push them beyond rough and rushed misconceptions. Our entire
staff will have further training on each of these Big Ideas as the year passes, and our upper primary team has
already begun working with Dr. Di Siemon on developing knowledge on Multiplicative Thinking. Further parent
workshops on these Big Ideas will be run in Term 2 and 3.
Reaching every student’s needs and actualising their potential is our goal, and all teachers across the school make
use of maths rotations to do this. Typically run 3 lessons a week, teachers have a rigorous cycle in place, one of pre-
assessment, grouping, creating tasks that address common misconceptions, and then reviewing progress. Teachers
supplement this cycle with problem solving and explicit teaching of fluency. Students in this cycle rotate between
working with the teacher in a small group, practicing fluency, exploring concepts in games, and using technology
with maths. This rotational cycle is constantly being refined, as teachers are practitioners of course, but it is
considered best practice due to the excellent improvement students show through these cycles.
I encourage you to check out our school maths website for parents, www.ppsmathsathome.com for more
information on the above and a wide range of other helpful directions for your mathematical parenting. Keep an
eye out for Term 2 and 3 workshops for parents and, if you have any questions or suggestions for me to consider,
email me at [email protected].

Maitidli News
We would like to take the time to congratulate the new Student
Voice Canteen Committee Leaders, Miranda and Rose. The girls
are working towards forming the new committee of students
who will be volunteering in the canteen this coming year.
We would also like to thank all the students who have given up their
recess or lunch times to help out in the first five weeks of school.
We had a bumper crop of strawberries delivered to the
canteen from the kitchen garden this week. Look out for our
special sorbet flavours next week.
More exciting news! From Monday, we are switching to reusable forks and spoons in an
effort to reduce our plastic waste. Lunch orders will include metal forks where necessary. Ice
cream cups and sorbet will have metal spoons. Sorbet will be served in returnable small
cups. All students will be encouraged to return their forks and spoons directly to the
canteen, or place them into the class lunch crate for washing up. All sorbet cups should be
returned to the canteen. Please join us in discussing this change with your child and
encourage return of our cutlery.
DID YOU KNOW? We have a new food waste collection point below the small window at
the canteen. Any leftovers can be placed into the green container for composting. We also
have a crate where Thursday sushi containers can be returned to the canteen for washing
and recycling, along with any plastic ‘sushi fish’.
