CHS State Volleyball Championships

MHS was well represented in the Riverina girls volleyball team which recently competed at the State Championships in Bathurst. Meg Perceval has named captain of the team and was well supported by Emma James, Katia Manton, Jess Abnett, Em Banks and Lucy Chesworth. Although not winning games, the girls played very competitively and had some very close games. They came up against the team which won the championships and had a very close game, going down 25 to 19. The girls were very happy with how they played and had a great time. Well done girls!

On Sunday 1 May, 18 students from Murrumburrah High School embarked on their adventures to the mighty bush and mountains of Tharwa in the ACT. On the first day students learnt how to pack their hiking bags and ensured they were well protected from the weather or any other situation they came across. Students participated in a giant swing activity which got all the students excited about the week ahead. The second day we climbed the giant ladder and played in the adults’ playground where all students gave their best to make it to the top. Jacob Frichot and Madeline Hartwig were the first and only 2 students to get to the top of both obstacles demonstrating great teamwork to get there. The students then learnt about the natural waterways of the area and participated with important tests of the waterway. Then we were off on our first hike of only 2.5 kilometres to the next campsite. The third day was the highlight of the trip for me as their teacher as it was great to see them hike 15 kilometres up Mt Tennett to the summit where the view was just spectacular looking out over all of Canberra. It was so great to see all students motivating and pushing each other up that mountain and the pain was well worth it. Day 4 was a smaller hike through the bush terrain to the next campsite where we set up out bivvies and ate dinner by 6:30pm and went to bed at 7:30pm sore and tired from the day before. Day 5 was much the same as the day before but day 6 seemed to be the most challenging and rewarding day for the group. We got up before the sun and were off to the place known as Lego

Land. This place was packed with the biggest boulders I have ever seen and we had to crawl and manoeuvre through the tiniest of gaps to get to another great view overlooking the Namadgi National Park. Once we all saw that awesome view we met up with Mrs Middleton who popped in to join us abseiling. It was great to see all the students harness up and give it their best with all facing their fear of heights and the unknown drop off a cliff face. We then had to hike to our final campsite where we ended up making it just as night set in. It was a relief when we woke up the next day knowing we were going home to have showers and cope with reality again. Everyone is so proud of all students who participated in Outward Bound as everyone was pushed way outside their comfort zone during the trip. The common theme among students when asked about the trip was the great teamwork and group learning that we all experienced, pushing past what they thought their limits were and supporting each other through the tough times when our minds wanted us to stop we kept on going! I want to say a massive thanks to Mellissa Ings for coming on the trip with us, the group could not have done it without you. Also thanks to Wendy for driving us down and picking us up on the bus and Mrs Middleton for all her hard work and time to organise the trip. It was an experience that I feel so lucky to be a part of with such amazing students. Mr Wakem PDHPE Teacher (See photos on next page)

Student leaders meet Governor

Student leaders Aritoula Raptis and Teegan George recently travelled to Sydney where they met his Excellency General David Hurley, Governor of NSW. The girls also met our State Member Katrina Hodgkinson and enjoyed time taking in some of what Sydney has to offer.
