Do Now: What happened this weekend in the Korean Peninsula? Why is it symbolic?

The Great Barrier Reef- off the coast of northeastern Australia, is the largest living thing on Earth, and even visible from outer space. The 2,300km-long ecosystem comprises thousands of reefs and hundreds of islands made of over 600 types of hard and soft coral.Artesian Well- well from which water flows under natural pressure without pumping.

Objective: Summarize the colonial exploitation and

development of Australia. Understand the basic characteristics of

Australia’s physical geography.

Do Now: List 6 Southeast Asian countries with goofy shortcuts.

Caldera- is a large cauldron-like depression that forms following the evacuation of a magma chamber/reservoir. When large volumes of magma are erupted over a short time, structural support for the crust above the magma chamber is lost. The ground surface then collapses downward into the partially emptied magma chamber, leaving a massive depression at the surface

Objective: Summarize the colonial exploitation and

development of Australia. Understand the basic characteristics of

Australia’s physical geography.

Physical Geography of Australia and New Zealand

Landforms

• Australia lies between the Pacific and Indian Oceans in the SouthernHemisphere. Although an island, Australia is classified as a continent because of its massive size.

• The Great Dividing Range is a mountain chain extending from Melbourne in the south to Cape York in the north.

• The Outback is made up of the Western Plateau, which is mostly desert and sparsely populated.

Landforms Pt. 2

•New Zealand lies about 1,000 miles southeast of Australia and consists primarilyof 2 islands, both of which have golden beaches, mountains, and ancient forests.

•New Zealand also contains sunken mountains like those in the Marlborough Sounds and Fiordland that have sunk into the sea.

•Glaciers are responsible for carving out many of New Zealand’s lakes and rivers.

Water Systems

•Australia is the driest inhabited continent on Earth, with freshwater unevenly distributed, unreliable, and seasonal.

•A large amount of pressurized underground water, known as the Great Artesian Basin, lies beneath the lowlands. The water that gushes from these artesian wells, or wells from which pressurized water flows to the surface, is too salty for humans or crops.

•Its main water problem is that people live in the eastern and southern areas while the most rainfall occurs in the north. New Zealand has an abundance of fresh water.

Climates, Biomes, and Resources

•Australia’s climate varies widely from temperate zones to desert regions. Marsupials, such as kangaroos, dominate Australia’s northern savannah.

•The Great Barrier Reef, along the northern coast, is home to many different kinds of sea creatures. New Zealand’s climate varies from warm subtropical to cool temperate zones.

•Mining is important in both countries, while New Zealand’s fertile soils also support agriculture.
