Romans pointed out that despite the importance ofachieving a Grade I win on the dirt, Sunday=s racewould likely not affect which surface the colt runs onfor the remainder of his career. AI=ll leave that up to[Donegal Racing owner and manager Jerry] Crawford,@Romans said. AHopefully, he=s around this year and nextyear, and there=s a lot of time to get him a Grade I onthe dirt. There=s a possibility if he doesn=t run well thisweekend he could show up in the [GI] Secretariat S. [onthe turf, Aug. 18 at Arlington Park] or the [GII] Del MarDerby [on the turf, Sept. 2 at Del Mar], or one of thosebigger races at the end of the year on grass.@ Despitethe retirement of Kentucky Derby and GI Preakness S.winner I=ll Have Another (Flower Alley) and Belmontwinner Union Rags (Dixie Union), Romans still seesstrength in the 3-year-old crop, and he considersBelmont runner-up Paynter (Awesome Again) asDullahan=s main threat on Sunday. AI think there=s somegood horses left out there, like Dullahan and Paynter,@Romans said. AI=m a huge Paynter fan, I think he=s oneof the best 3-year-olds in the crop. I think Paynter=s thehorse to beat [in the Haskell].@

MEANDRE HAS ARC TARGET Trainer Andre Fabre yesterday announced that he islooking at the Oct. 7 G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe forthe 4-year-old Meandre (Fr) (Slickly {Fr}). Successful inSunday=s G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin, the Rothschildfamily=s homebred will bid to atone for a sixth placing inthe Longchamp feature last term. AI don=t think horsesimprove from three to four ability-wise, they just getstronger,@ Fabre told PA Sport. AWe knew Meandre wasa good horse last year, he showed us the talent, but heis stronger this year and therefore easier to train. Lastyear, he started the season very early and I think by theend of the year, he was tired. He was sixth in the Arclast year and we hope he can improve on that thisseason. I was very happy with his performance [onSunday] and his next race will probably be his trial forthe Arc, the G2 Prix Foy [at Longchamp Sept. 16]. Theother option is the [Sept. 2] G1 Grosser Preis vonBaden in Germany, it will be one of those races andthen the Arc.@

ROTHSCHILD OPTION FOR LILAC Golden Lilac (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) may head to Deauvillefor Sunday's G1 Prix Rothschild, which is the firstmajor race of the track=s month-long festival.Disappointing when the unplaced favorite for the G1 Falmouth S. at Newmarket last time July 17, GestutAmmerland's homebred triple Group 1 winner could bidto get back on track in the mile contest. AShe could runat Deauville this weekend,@ trainer Andre Fabre told PASport. AI will look at the forfeits and then make adecision. The other option for her is the G1 PrixRomanet over 10 furlongs [at Deauville Aug. 19], so wewill see. She came back from Newmarket fine. She justgot worked up before the race and I don=t think shereally handled the July Course. Hopefully, she canreturn to her best next time.@

ROMANS ISSUES UPDATE ON STABLE STARS Tapitsfly (Tapit), winner of the 2009 Breeders' CupJuvenile Fillies Turf, has carved out a reputation as aconsistent performer in graded stakes on the turf overthe past two years. The 5-year-old recorded a landmarkvictory last out when she won the June 9 GI Just AGame S. for her first score at the highest level. She willlook to make it back-to-back Grade I wins in Saturday'sGI Diana S. at Saratoga. If forecasted weather materializes, Tapitsfly may haveto deal with a rain-softened turf course in Saturday'sfeature. She will also have to deal with the 1 1/8-milemile distance of the Diana, at which she is 0-for-2. Trainer Dale Romans, however, expressed confidencethat his filly will handle these obstacles. "Ideally, I'd like for them to make it a mile on a fasttrack, but they're not going to do it so we have to playthe game they're giving us," said Romans. "She'llhandle the distance, she's run longer distances beforeand run well. I don't think that's going to be a problemand as far as the course goes I think she can handle it,but we'll have to wait and find out." If Tapitsfly does indeed relish the 1 1/8 miles,Romans noted that it give her many more options forthe remainder of the year. "I think this weekend is going to answer a lot ofquestions," Romans said. "If she can get a mile and aneighth, it's going to open the door for a few moreoptions. But I haven't really looked past this race, I justwant to see if she'll handle the mile and an eighth, andif she does, we'll have a lot more places to look." Romans also issued upbeat bulletins on lastweekend's GII Virginia Derby winner Silver Max (Badgeof Silver) and Grade I Met Mile winner Shackleford(Forestry). "There were a lot of concerns. I didn't know howhe'd handle the soft going, how he'd be going a mileand a quarter," said Romans of Silver Max. "Then thesaddle slipped up on [Two Month=s Rent=s] neck and hewas hooked on the backside for the first time, but hehandled everything. If they didn't beat him in that race, what will it take to beat him? He's just too much on hisgame right now." Regarding Shackleford, who hasn't been seen sincehis Met Mile win May 28, Romans said the 4-year-oldcolt is "training super." "He's doing really well," Romans said. "We aren'tgoing to make the Whitney with him, because he cameout of the Met Mile pretty tired, and he'd never beenlike that before. It took him a little while to get on hisfeet, but he couldn't be doing better right now. We'repointing towards the [GI] Forego [Sept. 1]."

WILKES: NECK ‘N NECK HAS MATURED Neck >n Neck (Flower Alley), set to run in Saturday'sGII Jim Dandy S. at Saratoga, looked far fromspectacular competing on the Triple Crown trail thisspring. After unplaced efforts in the GIII Sam F. DavisS., the GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S., and theGI Florida Derby, the colt was given a two-monthlayoff. When he returned from the holiday, however, the A. Steven Miles Jr. homebred looked far fromordinary. Neck n' Neck made his reappearance in a May 10 allowance going 1 1/16-miles on the dirt atChurchill Downs, winning by 6 1/2-lengths. Hefollowed up that performance with a dominating 7 1/4-length score in the GIII Matt Winn S. over thesame course and distance June 16. Trainer Ian Wilkessaid maturity was the key factor in his horse's dramaticimprovement. "The horse is finally maturing and not makingmistakes in his races, and he's grown up a little," saidWilkes. In addressing whether or not the colt has improvedenough for yet another step up in class, the traineradded: "He was only four lengths behind [Union Rags{Dixie Union}] in the Fountain of Youth, and fivelengths off in the Florida Derby, so the key is has heimproved five lengths? I really think he has. I think hebelongs and I'm going to learn a lot on Saturday." Wilkes said he has seen Neck n' Neck continue tomature in his training leading up to the Jim Dandy, andhe "couldn't be happier" with the way the colt workedMonday. "In his work, he worked a little fast, but Julien[Leparoux] said he took a breather around the turn. Hedidn't ask him to do it, but the horse did it himself thenswitched leads and went on himself." Wilkes said he opted for a tilt at the Jim Dandy ratherthan the GI Haskell Invitational S. to get an idea ofwhere his horse stands for the Aug. 25 GI Travers S. "You want to run at the track and see if you belongin the Travers," Wilkes said. "The Travers holds a lot ofprestige. The Haskell does too, but you're running overthis track and I think that's an advantage sometimes toget a race over it."

AMAZOMBIE BACK TO 6F IN BING CROSBY Last year's sprint champion Amazombie (NorthernAfleet) will continue on the road to defending his GI Breeders' Cup Sprint title when he lines up inSunday's GI Bing Crosby S. at Del Mar. Trainer BillSpawr noted that while the drop back to six furlongswill suit his late-running horse, the expected small fieldfor the Bing Crosby is a concern, especially with thelikely presence of speedball The Factor (War Front) ."It's not a good thing, because there is a lack ofspeed," said Crosby. "There was absolutely no speed[last year] and we were forced to put our horse in therace a little earlier than we wanted and it didn't workout."Amazombie encountered a similar situation in hismost recent start, which resulted in a length defeat toShackleford (Forestry) in the May 5 GII Churchill DownsS. "We thought there'd be two speed horses andnobody went so we were forced to go [to the lead] andput a little pressure on him, and it sure didn't workout." Spawr noted that while he will not change histactics with Amazombie, his horse is more prepared forthis race than he was last year, when he ran in the GITriple Bend H. at Hollywood Park four weeks earlier."Last year our primary goal was the [GI] Ancient Title[Oct. 8 at Santa Anita]. I just wanted to get anotherrace into him because I knew I had over two monthsbetween [the Triple Bend] and the Ancient Title. Soalthough we were serious, we weren't fully preparedlast year, but this year we are." The Bing Crosby will beAmazombie's first start on a synthetic surface this year, and although the 6-year-old performs over those tracks,Spawr believes he is better on the dirt."He's OK on it[Polytrack], but he's better on dirt. [Jockey] Mike[Smith] always says he feels different getting over dirtthan he does Polytrack, but we're not making anyexcuses for him and we'll do our best on the Poly." Spawr said that Amazombie will follow the same pathas last year after Sunday's race, targeting the Oct. 6 GI Santa Anita Sprint Championship (formerly theAncient Title) and a repeat in the Nov. 3 GI Breeders'Cup Sprint, both over six furlongs on the Santa Anitadirt.

DANZIG IN AMERICA Pedigree buffs whose memories extend to the earlyyears of the last decade like to tell the story of howSadler=s Wells was struggling as a sire of sires beforeMontjeu and Galileo appeared. Ten years ago, whensomebody said to you, Awho are Sadler=s Wells=s bestsons at stud?@ or Awhat are the prospects for theSadler=s Wells sire line?@ the answer was guarded. InThe Wings and his son, Singspiel; Barathea; thebeautifully bred Northern Hemisphere group winner FortWood had sired Horse Chestnut, in South Africa; and El Prado, who at that time hadn=t sired Medaglia d=Oro,Kitten=s Joy, and Artie Schiller, and was still regardedas somewhat of a fish out of water--though later weunderstood he was actually the second-best Kentuckystallion with first foals 1994, after a certain A.P. Indy. It=s been a little bit like that for Danzig in America. InEurope just about anything that isn=t Galileo or Montjeuis Danzig-line, primarily through Danehill (in theCoolmore corner, and also the dominant sire line inAustralia) or Green Desert (in the Maktoum corner, having been raced by the late Sheikh Maktoum andhaving stood at his brother, Sheikh Hamdan=s, NunneryStud in England). Danehill had actually been raced byPrince Khalid Abdullah, and Prince Khalid=s JuddmonteFarms stands his top-five European sire son, Dansili, plus of course Danehill is the damsire of Juddmonte=sFrankel, one of a remarkable four 2011 Classic winnersby Galileo out of Danehill mares. Some pedigree thinkers argue that Danehill and GreenDesert should be regarded as separate branches ofDanzig, and ultimately that may prove to be the case, though if it does happen it will show how thecategorizations we pedigree historians make candepend on such factors as the undeclared war betweenCoolmore (Danehill) and the Maktoums (Green Desert).Either way, the influence of Danzig on European (andAustralian) racing and breeding is immense. Danehill isthe sire of sires Danehill Dancer, Dansili (as mentioned, himself now sire of promising second-crop sire RailLink), Rock of Gibraltar, Exceed and Excel (a rare DarleyDanehill sire, also in Australia), Holy Roman Emperor, current leading European second-crop sire DylanThomas, and, also in Australia, probable World Top 12sires Redoute=s Choice and Fastnet Rock, who has hisfirst Northern Hemisphere crop of yearlings (he coveredalmost exclusively Coolmore mares that first year >upnorth=, and wasn=t even advertised) in the NorthernHemisphere this year. Green Desert is the sire of siresCape Cross (sire of Sea The Stars), Invincible Spirit (sireof current European second-crop sires number two,Lawman), and Oasis Dream (also a Juddmonte stallion,by the way--they have one of each). It=s a Danzigextravaganza--a Danziganza, I guess.

Not so much in North America, where five of the top10 on the Blood-Horse=s current North AmericanGeneral Sire List hail from the Mr. Prospector sire line(#3 City Zip, by Carson City; #6 Distorted Humor, byForty Niner, and his son, #10 Flower Alley; and twosons of Gone West, #4 Speightstown and #7 ProudCitizen), plus the new 2012 number one, Empire Maker(after Royal Delta=s win in the GII Delaware H.), is byUnbridled, by Fappiano--the one Mr. Prospector line thatI feel sure has branched off to become its own line.Another two of the top 10 are A.P. Indy=s son MalibuMoon (#8) and grandson by Pulpit, Tapit (#5). Tiznow, who I wrote about last week, from the In Reality line, is#9, leaving only current #2 Giant=s Causeway (two-timeLeading Sire), by Storm Cat, as the only representativeof the Northern Dancer sire line among America=scurrent top 10. There are four male lines descending from NorthernDancer which are still producing prominent sires today.Sadler=s Wells and Danzig between them rule Europe, and both are expanding now in North America; StormCat is still by far the most influential in North America;and Deputy Minister/Vice Regent are still battling away.Though he was always a top sire of racehorses in NorthAmerica as well as everywhere else, the Danzig line hasjust never been as strong a sire line in North America asit has been in Europe. In the mid-1990s, Dayjur showeda lot of promise, but ultimately didn=t follow through, although he was a very effective broodmare sire.Danzig Connection, Honor Grades, Belong to Me,Boundary, Langfuhr, Concerto, War Chant--some usefulsires but, really, nothing earth-shattering. In the last two years, though, three sons and onegrandson of Danzig have more or less suddenlyappeared to suggest America can still be Danzigcountry, like just about every place else is. I say >moreor less= because the first of these, Three Chimneys=Exchange Rate, is 15 years old and has been at stud for10 years, though his first six crops (2003-2008) wereborn in Florida, and his first Kentucky crop, sired in2008, are foals of 2009, so they=re 3-year-olds thisyear. As far as stallions coming up to Kentucky afterearly successes in Florida, Amany are called but few arechosen,@ I believe is the expression. Yes, Mr. Prospectordid it, followed by his son, Fappiano, but many moreover the years have tried and failed; they couldn=tAstand the raise.@ Hill >n= Dale=s Stormy Atlantic is onewho did; he moved from Florida after his first2-year-olds had run, for the 2003 breeding season, andthat gamble paid off--he is among the top 15 on theNorth American General Sire List for the seventhconsecutive year in 2012 (ranks 12th).

Weekly Sales Ticker by Bill Oppenheim

“Last year 7,104 yearlings had sold, by the end of October, 2011, at the sales we cover for the Weekly Sales Ticker; that was almost exactly two-thirds of the 10,667 catalogued, by the way – a high clearance rate. The gross was $496.2-million, and the average, for the more than 7,000 sold, was $69,857 – call it $70,000. Last year the Fasig July sale averaged $69,890 – almost exactly the same as the average for the whole yearling sales season, through October. This month’s Fasig average was $81,291 – a 16% gain; could that be a pointer for the yearling sales season? It was last year.”

Exchange Rate was a $1.4-million yearling in 1998,bought by Satish Sanan=s Padua Stables and trained byWayne Lukas. It took a long time to get his moneyback--he was a useful racehorse, versatile on dirt or turfup to a mile, winning the GII Tom Fool H. (sevenfurlongs, dirt) at four and earning $479,803--butultimately, after proving a successful sire, including twoGrade I winners in his first crop (foals of 2003),Exchange Rate was moved to Kentucky for the 2008covering season. If we published a table of ASires withfirst Kentucky crops@, he would have ranked thirdamong the sire class with first Kentucky foals 2009,behind only Scat Daddy and Hard Spun. As it was, theywere third and fifth, respectively, on the 2011 list ofLeading North American Sires of 2-year-olds, andExchange Rate ranked ninth. This year, with his secondKentucky crop of 2-year-olds, he currently ranksnumber four on the 2-year-old sire list, thanks to theexploits of his unbeaten G2 Prix Robert Papin and G2 Norfolk S. winner, Reckless Abandon. He alsowould still rank third on this mythical >second-cropKentucky sire= list; so that gives us a bit of perspectiveas to where Exchange Rate actually stands. He had anAPEX A Runner index of 2.18 through the end of 2011(Stormy Atlantic, by comparison, was 2.12); and hehas always been good for 2-year-olds, as is indicatedby his 2.15 ABC 2-year-old Index.

But Danzig=s resurgence as a sire line in NorthAmerica is by no means limited to Exchange Rate, because two of Danzig=s last sons to go to stud inKentucky have proven to be very good young sires; oneof them you see just above Exchange Rate in the littletable; this is, of course, Hard Spun, a seriouslyhigh-class speed horse around two turns for owner RickPorter=s Fox Hill Farms, Larry Jones the trainer. His onlyGrade I win came when they dropped him back toseven furlongs to win the top American race for3-year-old sprinters, the GI King=s Bishop (Beyer 106);but he also set the pace and ran second in the GIKentucky Derby (to Street Sense, Hard Spun=s Beyer107) and the GI Breeders= Cup Classic (Beyer 112, toCurlin); second to Any Given Saturday in the GI Haskell(106); third to Curlin in the GI Preakness (104); andHard Spun also won two Grade II nine-furlong races onthe Polytrack at Turfway Park, the GII Lane=s End S.(101) and the GII Kentucky Cup Classic (109).

Hard Spun was part of Darley=s $200-million 2007sire spending spree, but, as you can see, as a sire healready has 11 black-type winners and 21 black-typehorses, including, of course, the one-two in lastweekend=s GI CCA Oaks. As Andrew Caulfield notedyesterday, the signs are definitely pointing in the rightdirection for him. More of a surprise was War Front, raced by Joe Allenand standing at Claiborne Farm, where his first foalswere born in 2008. Trained by Allen Jerkens, WarFront=s best year was as a 4-year-old in 2006, when heproved, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that he wasnot a top-class sprinter. That=s right, he was not: hewent off at odds of 15-1 in that year=s GI Breeders= CupSprint at Churchill Downs, and the odds were right--hefinished seventh. War Front had finished second fivetimes in graded sprints that year; twice in Florida, then,in New York, to Silver Train in the GII Tom Fool; toPomeroy in the GI Forego; and to Henny Hughes in theGI Vosburgh. In between he won the GII Vanderbilt atSaratoga, as the 7-4 favorite. His Beyers were good, ranging from 102-114, mostly in defeat; but there is noway, based on his form as a racehorse, that you wouldsay he would become one of the top young sires inAmerica.

Yet that is exactly what he is: War Front now hasthree Grade I winners in his first crop: The Factor(seven furlongs, AW, also a Grade II winner on dirt); thefilly Summer Soiree (GI Del Mar Oaks, 9 furlongs, turf),and, this year, Data Link (GI Maker=s 46 Mile atKeeneland, turf), as well as Soldat, second in the GII Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf at two, and winner ofthe GII Fountain of Youth on the dirt last year, at three.War Front=s second crop, now three, includes SummerFront, who just won a one-mile turf stakes at Saratogaover the weekend, having previously won the GIII HillPrince; he is definitely entitled to be one of the top3-year-old turf milers in America. One old-timers=definition of a sire of sires is one whose sons are bettersires than they were racehorses; War Front, son ofDanzig, definitely fits that category. One other horse deserves a mention in the context ofDanzig=s American sire resurgence: 2012 freshman sireMagna Graduate, who is by Danzig=s moderate sire son,Honor Grades--who just happened to be a gradedstakes-placed half-brother to, let=s see, A.P. Indy andSummer Squall. No wonder he got a shot at stud. Hedid sire GI Breeders= Cup Distaff winner Adoration, andGrade I turf winner Honor Glide. Magna Graduate wonthe GII Clark H. and six Grade III races among 10 winsfrom 35 starts, ages two through six; he also ransecond in the GI Stephen Foster, to Flashy Bull; andthird in the 2007 G1 Dubai World Cup, behindElectrocutionist and Wilko. Total earnings: $2,582,816,but a $5,000 stallion at Darby Dan, and not an obviouscandidate to sire an early 2-year-old graded stakeswinner. He=s number four at this early call on the 2012North American Freshman Sire List, with three winners, including GIII Churchill Downs Debutante S. winnerBlueeyesintherein. Conclusion: Notably, not through Danehill (2004 G1Epsom Derby winner North Light was tried in Kentucky,is now in Ontario) nor Green Desert, three sons ofDanzig--Exchange Rate, War Front, and Hard Spun--areall looking like pretty good news on the sire front. WarFront looks a very good grass sire, and Exchange Ratehas at least three key runners from his first twoKentucky crops with very good grass form also. Danzigalways did great on the grass himself, but, whateverthe surface, for the first time in some years, it looks likeDanzig could--finally, some might say, considering theDanzig line=s powerful influence in Europe and Australia--reemerge as a significant sire line in Kentucky.

From Startto Finish...

with Darley Flying Start=s Sophie Ignarski

My last blog found the 12 of us scattered across theU.S. on our five-week placements; each of us workingfor different trainers, bloodstock agents, vets and otherracing operations. While several trainees venturedfurther afield to New York, California and Maryland, fiveof us remained in Kentucky; Ian Thompson with trainerEddie Kenneally, Stephen Heath at WinStar, MadokaKamei at Keeneland, Steve O=Connor with bloodstockagent Pete Bradley, and myself with racetrackveterinarian Dr. Nancy Brennan. Following the others= return to Lexington, ourattention began to turn to our next assignment, theimpending business conference at Fasig-Tipton. Ourtask was to prepare a business concept to pitch in frontof four members of the >Bluegrass Angels= (anorganisation of local investors) and an audience ofindustry figures. One trainee=s exclamations of-->oh, itwill be just like the TV show Shark Tank,= did little toallay our growing fears, but in the end, our ideas(ranging from a new recruitment agency for theThoroughbred industry to a state-of-the art app for studfarm managers) were well-received, with a few probingquestions from the Bluegrass Angels and audience tomake sure the concepts were as robust as theyseemed. The conference marked the official end of our timehere in Kentucky, and when planning what else todiscuss in this month=s blog, advice from my fellowtrainees suggested I should include a wrap-up of oursix-month stint here in America, now that we haveofficially finished. However, I quickly realised that theyhad set me a difficult task--how could I possiblysummarise almost seven months of fantasticexperiences and our time in a place that has begun tofeel almost like home?

Kentucky has provided us with many, manyunforgettable memories; from attending exceptionalracing at Churchill Downs, Belmont Park andKeeneland, to working on farms, racetracks and in thebreeding shed with some of the best bloodstock in theworld. We have had the best and most wide-rangingexposure to the American racing industry possible, fromexperiencing the Kentucky Derby day and the true>sport of kings,= to learning for ourselves about themore sobering challenges currently faced by theindustry. Outside of our working schedule, we havealso had a chance to sample the Kentuckian way of life, from Wildcats basketball games to attending a rodeoand St Patrick=s Day, Lexington-style. Of course there have been a few more challengingmoments along the way. For some, the difficult task ofstaying awake for those final hours of foal watchingshifts, for others, the English vs. American >languagebarrier=: the debate on the correct pronunciation of>derby= remains unresolved. Somehow, we all managedto survive the infamous mid-winter farriery school; asignificant achievement if you ask any of the pastDarley Flying Start graduates! Several trainees are staying on in the U.S. in order toattend the Saratoga race meeting and yearling sale andthe rest are heading home for a few weeks= rest. Whileall of us could easily spend several more months here, our next stop on the program--Australia--is calling. We=llbe based mostly in the Hunter Valley with a few weeksscheduled in Sydney and Melbourne, and we are allexcited to get to our next destination. Finally, I can=t end this installment of the blog withoutsaying a very big thank you to everyone who hassupported us throughout the last 6 months. To thepeople who have hosted us, met with us, lectured, andmentored us, we cannot thank you enough. We alsowish to thank the Darley staff and management, particularly our coordinator here in the U.S., TammyMasterson, for their support, encouragement andendless patience. Hopefully it is goodbye, but notfarewell to Lexington!

We have given our two TDN crack handicappers, Brian DiDonato and SteveSherack, a mythical $1000 bankroll and told them they can bet no more than 5%of that on any given day at Saratoga on a straight win bet. The winner, at theend of the meet, gets $100 in a TVG betting account, along with bragging rightsuntil next July.

DiDonato: Monday - Letshootpool could not have run any worse.Luckily, Mr. Sherack has been equally cold after his successful start.Going to stick to stats-based plays and be a bit more conservative, letting him come back to me before I make my big late run... or have tobe eased.

Today - Race 5 - Msw, 2yo, f, 5 1/2f - #2 My Happy Face (8-1) Rudy Rodriguez boasts excellent numbers with his 2-year-old firsters, and My Happy Face’s pedigree suggests she can win on debut.According to DRF Formulator, Rodriguez is 4-for-18 (22%) whenunveiling juveniles in dirt sprints, good for a $4.23 ROI. All four winnerscame in maiden special weight company, boosting Rodriguez’s stats inthe relevant category to a downright absurd 4-for-7 (57%) with a $10.90ROI. Two of those three non-winners ran second, with one losing by justa head at 15-1. The other one was fourth at 23-1 here. My Happy Face’sfreshman sire Tiz Wonderful was a super-impressive debut winner herein 2006, and he has done well with his first babies to hit the track. TheSpendthrift resident has a 5-1 winner, a 5-2 narrow runner-up and an18-1 show horse from six progeny to make their first starts. My HappyFace’s dam Summer Star (Siberian Summer) didn’t win first out, but shehad some speed and her first foal, My Boy Jimmy (Teton Forest), brokehis maiden for a tag at Pimlico in April, paying $15. Play: $25 Win.Alternate 1: Race 7 - $10 Win on #14 Seminole County. Alternate 2:Race 8 - $20 Win on #6 Cease.

Sherack: Monday - My Big Brown firster Aventurine failed to land ablow in the fifth race Monday, but didn’t run that terrible either, makingup a decent amount of ground to finish sixth, beaten 3 1/2 lengths. Can’tcomplain getting 10-1 on Pletcher and Dominguez, that’s for sure.Today - Race 3 - Md 50000 (50-40), 3yo/up, 1 1/16mT - #4 KnockRock (20-1) We’ll be putting up the blue screen for DiDonato at TDN’s Red Bankoffice Wednesday after Knock Rock lights up the tote board here. Yes,Knock Rock has been awful in his last two runs at this level downstate, and is 0-for-14 lifetime. And yes, trainer Scott Schwartz is somehowone-for-53 (hard to believe) this term. But trust me, it gets better. KnockRock, a $40K OBSAPR grad, was once thought of so highly by hisconnections that he contested the GII With Anticipation over this courseand GII Pilgrim at Belmont as a maiden last term, and didn’t embarrasshimself. He finished only 4 1/4 lengths off the mark in the WithAnticipation, placing a solid fourth behind State of Play, Optimizer andDullahan, and was also a decent fifth in the Pilgrim over a soft going.Granted, the son of Corinthian needs to run back to his much moreappealing 2011 form to make an impact here--which also includes acouple of solid efforts behind Shkspeare Shaliyah and Liquidity Trap--but based on the horses that will be taking money, he certainly has achance at a huge price in a pretty bad field. Seems to run better whenridden a bit more aggressively early, and has a favorable inside draw.Watch out if Junior catches a flyer out of the gate. Play: $20 Win (TurfOnly). Alternate 1: Race 7 - $25 Win on #7 Chief Gaga. Alternate 2:Race 4 - $20 Win on #10 Salvar.

Claiming Crown Alters Nomination Process: A new nomination process for the Claiming Crownwill be implemented for the 2012 season, the ClaimingCrown Limited announced yesterday. The nominations, which will be held at Gulfstream Park Dec.1, will nowrequire both trainer and horse to be appointed for theevent. ARather than having trainers nominating horsesthis far out from the Claiming Crown, we felt it wouldbe easier to change the nominating process,@ said DanBork, racing secretary at Gulfstream. ATrainers whonominate a horse in August for the event may not havethat horse by Dec. 1. We believe this also gives trainersthe ability to get a horse for one of the ClaimingCrown=s seven races or make a horse they currentlyhave eligible for the event. We think this will alsocontinue to create interest in the Claiming Crown.@Trainers must pay a $100 fee before Sept. 1 to beeligible to nominate horses, and the equine nominationsmust be submitted before Nov. 10. Conditioners whohave waived the fee can nominate horses throughsupplemental nomination held Nov. 28. The ClaimingCrown is comprised of seven races with a total of$850,000 in purses.
