Earlier, in the quarterfinal, New Challenger Cricket Club defeated Krishna Cricket Club by 9 wickets in an easy contest. Batting first, Krishna Club scored a modest total of 103 runs in the stipulated 20 overs. Sunny Saini top scored with 33 runs, while Bhanu and Bablu contributed 17 and 11 runs to the total respectively. Deepak took 3 wickets, while Soumay Jain bagged 2 wickets for New Challenger. Sumit and Sahil also claimed one wicket each. In reply, New Challenger scored the required runs in 14.3 overs by losing one wicket and won the match by 9 wickets. For his brilliant knock of 44 runs, Vimarsh Kaw was adjudged as man of the match. In the pre-quarterfinal, RCC Srinagar thrashed Rising Star Cricket Club by 54 runs. Batting first, RCC scored a decent total of 161 runs in the allotted 20 overs by losing 5 wickets. Satish Kumar played a brilliant innings of 55 runs, while Rakesh Koul and Puneet Kumar contributed valuable 42 and 41 runs to the total respectively. Yogesh Sikka took 2 wickets for Rising Star, while Surjeet and Paras claimed one wicket each. In reply, Rising Star man- aged to score 107 runs in 20 overs, thus lost the match by a big margin of 54 runs. Guggu top scored with 34 runs, while Mohit contributed 20 runs to the total. Sachin and Lokesh chipped in with 12 and 11 runs respectively. Akash Choudhary took 2 wickets for RCC, while Rakesh Koul, Kuldeep Kumar, Dilbag Singh and Puneet Kumar claimed one wicket each. Rakesh Koul and Satish Kumar were jointly adjudged as men of the match. The matches were officiated by Saleem-ur-Rehman, Sadiq Hussain Malik, Rajinder Singh, Sandeep Manchanda and Vinod Kandyara. Australia win as Rohit’s heroics trumped by Smith PERTH, Jan 12: Rohit Sharma's scintillating unbeaten 171 went in vain as Australia rode on skipper Steve Smith's fluent 149 to script a comfortable five-wicket victory in a high-scoring first cricket one-dayer here today. On one of the flattest WACA tracks in recent times, India scored a commanding 309 for three courtesy Rohit's brilliant strokeplay but the target seemed insufficient against the hosts, who relied on centuries by Smith and George Bailey (112) to over- haul the target in 49.2 overs. Rohit's 163-ball knock was the best by an Indian today while vice-captain Virat Kohli also impressed with a 91-run effort as the duo added 207 runs for the second wicket. But India's poor bowling allowed the Australians to clinch a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Smith, who faced 163 balls, added a staggering 242 runs for the third wicket with another former captain Bailey =as the home team knocked off the runs with ease. While it was another heart- breaking end to a Rohit century that ended in a losing cause (his T20 hundred and ODI hundred against SA were scored in defeats), Australian skipper Smith again turned out to be India's nemesis pacing his innings to perfection. Smith's sequence of scores against the 'Men In Blue' across formats reads: 162 not out, 52 not out, 133, 28, 192, 14, 117, 71, 47, 105. It also turned out to be the highest successful run-chase at the WACA and the third highest in an ODI in Australia. The Indian bowling attack looked completely out of depth as the Smith-Bailey duo never did anything extraordinary but still managed to hammer Umesh Yadav and co with monotonic regularity. For India, debutant Barinder Sran (3/56) managed to create an impression with early break- throughs but the other bowlers failed to join the party. Especially disappointing were India's spin twins Ravichandran Ashwin (2/68 in 9 overs) and Ravindra Jadeja (0/61 in 9 overs) looked far from penetrative. They could hardly extract any turn and were played with consummate ease by the Aussie captain, whose footwork was exemplary. The two teams will now travel to Brisbane for the second ODI on Friday. Smith hit 11 fours and 2 sixes en route his fifth ODI ton while Bailey's third hundred had seven fours and two sixes. While Australia were 21 for two in the fifth over, things could have taken a different turn as Bailey looked to have gloved the first delivery he faced bowled by Sran.
