www.prairiesouth.ca/lafleche T: 306-472-3192 Lafleche Central School is located on Treaty 4 Territory, the original lands of the Cree, Ojibwe,
Saulteaux, Dakota, Nakota, Lakota, and on the homeland of the Métis Nation. We are all Treaty people.
Another month has just sped by in a blink of an eye. The second semester is well underway with Grades 7-
12 having started their new classes and schedules. Once again, we would like to thank the RM of Wood River
for allowing us to use their shop facility to instruct the carpentry class. There are also several students taking
online classes such as Forensic Science, Psychology, Health Science and Power Engineering. We are thankful
that the Division has these classes set up to offer a variety to our students. If you have a student in your house
that is taking an online class, please check in weekly to make sure that they are staying on top of their
assignments.
Prior to the break, students signed up for our annual LCS drama production. This year’s play is a comedy
called, “Pistols and Posies”. Miss Elek and Miss Hagenes are directing this production and running practices
on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:00.
With the hockey season starting to wrap up, we congratulate all our hockey players for an entertaining
season! We wish those teams who are in the final playoff games, good luck!
Badminton season has now officially started. Mr. Lindsay and Ms. Wilson are coaching the seniors and
running practices on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:00-6:30. Mrs. de Graauw is coaching the bantams
and running practices Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30-5:00.
March 21-28 is the Lafleche and District Music Festival. We wish all our musicians, singers and choral
speakers the best of luck, as they prepare for this big event! Parents – please let the school know when your
child will be absent due to performances at the festival.
Report cards for K-12 students will go out on Monday, March 19. Our Student-Led Conferences will be
held in the evenings of March 21 and 22. Please remember to book your SLC(s) on schoolinterviews.ca. The
site will be open for bookings from Monday, March 5 (9:00am) until noon on Wednesday, March 21.
Family Literacy Day was on January 27. Due to exams, our school chose to celebrate on February 2.
Students K-12 and families enjoyed an afternoon of oratory finals followed by yummy cupcakes and cake
made by Kyla Masse. Parker B and Isabella A were the winners of the Star Wars book draw.
The 2018-19 school calendar is in the evolving stage. The process for developing the calendar has
changed somewhat from previous years, but the parameters have remained the same. In previous years,
parents were given two calendars to vote on, but this year the calendar is being given to the SCC’s for their
input. We will share the final calendar as soon as it becomes available.
School Staff Appreciation Week was February 12-16. We would like to acknowledge the numerous people
who contribute in one way or another in order for our children to get the education they require. No job
should go unnoticed. To everyone we say “Thank you!”
We have just recently been granted a teaching staff increase. Miss Brooke Stewart has agreed to increase
her status to a full time teacher. The target for the increase is to improve our reading levels. Our data is
showing that our reading levels for some students are not at grade level! We have put plans in place to help
change this. We would also like to ask parents to please continue working with their child(ren) at home to
help us maintain the progress.
The time has finally arrived! We have waited for the portable classroom to be completed in order for us to
move in. During the next few weeks we will be busy moving things around and organizing our space. Please
stop by for a visit and check out our new classroom! Mrs. Lisa Packet

PREKINDERGARTEN
February is an exciting and loveable time
of year in the Prekindergarten classroom.
The students are busy exploring
Groundhog Day, the Olympics, and
Valentine’s Day. We were extremely
happy to have a visit from the “Little Love
Bug” who brought us treats and prizes. On
Thursday, February 15 we had a great turn
out for our Family Day. We enjoyed making
pizza buns and playing the “Rocks and
Rings” curling (thanks to the Club 50). The
families had a blast and learnt many things
about curling. I see that we have lots of
future curlers in the making! We heard
many stories about holidays and events
that took place over the February break!
All the students look refreshed and excited
to be back at school. We look forward to
March and hopefully some spring
weather!
Prek Class, Mrs. Cornet & Mrs. Ellis
KINDERGARTEN
In Kindergarten we have been learning
about the Olympics, numbers 1-10,
reading Jolly Phonics words and making
predictions. We have enjoyed dramatic
role playing as veterinarians taking care of
snakes, dogs, cats, turtles, rabbits and
hamsters. Our class participated in the Jail
‘n Bail for Telemiracle. The students
thought it was pretty cool to have the
RCMP at school. However, some students
were a little nervous as they thought they
were truly being arrested. We will be
exploring with magnets and metal blocks
over the next month in Science class. The
students are excited and hopeful for warm
spring weather!

CURLING
Our LCS curling season has come to an
end. The Bantam playoffs were held in
Kincaid February 2 & 3 where our teams
played well. The Bantam Mixed team
battled hard and received the silver
medal. They were known as the team with
the most enthusiasm and excitement! Our
Girls team also were awarded the silver
medal. The Girls team were known to
have the most sportsmanship and that
“never give up” attitude. Our young
Bantam Boys team did excellent against
some tough teams. Our young boys
managed to get some points on the
board and kept those older boys on their
toes! The older boys Bantam team battled
hard and took some games into extra
ends in order to come home with a well-
deserved silver medal. This LCS boys team
was the only team eligible to advance to
the District level. Districts were held in
Assiniboia on February 9 & 10. Although
our Boys team did not place, they had a
great learning experience and
represented our school well. Our Senior
Mixed team got an automatic advance to
the District level because there were no
other Mixed teams in our section. After
much thought, our Senior team chose to
opt out of the District playoff. They felt that
perhaps next year, when they have more
experience, they could tackle that
tournament. We would like to thank our
volunteers Miss Hagenes and Mrs. Packet
for giving students the opportunity to curl.
Thanks to all the parents who drove and
cheered players on. Special thanks to the
Lafleche Curling Club for allowing us to use
their facility! Congratulations to all curlers!
We are proud of how you represented our
school.

Coach: Mrs. de Graauw
SENIOR BADMINTON
We had our first practice for the senior
badminton team. We have a small team
this year and we have decided to work with
the bantam team to help fill the courts. The
grade nines will be joining us on the court for
practice. We plan on heading to a number
of tournaments this year but have not
confirmed with all the hosts as of yet. This
year should be another great year for
badminton and we look forward to working
with our athletes. Go Lightning!
Coaches: Mr. Lindsay & Ms. Wilson
TELL THEM FROM ME SURVEYS
Coming up shortly, we will be doing our
school Tell Them From Me surveys with the

the parent survey. We hope to hear from
all of you! Stay tuned for more

school to use their newly acquired Rocks and
Rings set. We divided the entire school into
teams of four for a week long fun bonspiel
during the week of February 12-16. The
bonspiel was held in our new portable

LCS Annual Oratory Competition
As part of our school wide reading goal, our staff organized our annual school oratory
competition. The intent is to provide students with an opportunity and incentive to further
develop their reading and speaking skills. Public speaking is a life skill needed at various
times throughout an individual’s life and according to the English Language Arts curricula,
it is a skill which students are required to learn. For the past months, students in grades K-12
each memorized a poem and presented it orally. During the last week of January,
individual classrooms held their speak-off competitions. Judges picked three students from
each grade to present their poems in the final competition. Shout out to all students in the
school for learning a poem; a job well done! The final oratory competition was held on
February 2 at 1:15. Ms. Stewart was the master of ceremonies for the event and moved
things along. Our three judges for the event were Mr. Dave Sproule, Ms. Joanne Vinish, and
Ms. Sheila Klein. Judges had the difficult job of picking a 1st place winner from each grade.
Students who finished first place have the opportunity to attend the Lafleche and District
Music Festival if they choose. Thanks to our School Community Council, for encouraging
students to enter the festival by offering to pay their entry fee. The following is the list of
