FIRST READING: One nation shall not raise the sword against another, nor shall they train for war again. (Is 2:4b) PSALM: Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord. (Ps 122) SECOND READING: You know the time; it is the hour now for you to awake from sleep. For our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. (Rom 13:11) GOSPEL: “Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come.” (Mt 24:42) The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the Lectionary for Mass (c) 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

So too, you also must be prepared, for at an

hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.

“I’m never getting enough rest! How can I possibly be ‘asleep’?” In a world of jam-packed schedules and high anxiety levels, physical rest may be hard to come by. Yet relentless pursuit of our to-do lists and social calendars may keep our minds off of the things that really matter. Jesus knows all too well a pattern of busy, harried ignorance. “In those days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage … they did not know until the flood came and carried them all away … two men will be out in the field … two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken, and one will be left.” When it comes to the spiritual life, we can be at work or at relaxation and still be spiritually asleep. Each year, we are called back to remember the essential things. God comes to save His people. He becomes flesh to dwell among us. Supernat-ural light pierces the world’s darkness and our own. Advent wakes us up. “Stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come.” Every Advent, we prepare to celebrate Christ’s first coming at Christmas, and we anticipate his second coming at the end of time. “At an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” There’s another hour, too, both known and unknown. It’s the present moment. Whether it’s a lazy Saturday morning or a major business proposal, whether it’s attending a kindergarten play or an elderly relative’s bedside, at every moment the Lord wants to enter into our hearts. This Advent, let’s pray for the grace to stay alert. Christ is coming soon.

Heal us, Lord, and we shall be healed; save us, and we shall be saved; for it is You we praise. Send relief and healing for all our diseases, our sufferings and our wounds; for You are a merciful and faithful healer. Blessed are You Lord, who heals the sick.

Receive, Lord, in tranquility and peace, the souls of your servants who have departed out of this

present life to be with you. Give them the life that knows no age, the good things that do not pass

away; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Your offering of as little as one hour’s wage will help us meet our daily needs.

November 16-17

GENERAL OFFERTORY COLLECTION: $13,429.00 ONLINE GIVING: $ 2,952.00 WEEKLY TOTAL: $16,381.00

Each Sunday, and in fact every day, you are invited to a special banquet at the Table of the Lord. Of course, we use special linens that are fresh and clean for each Mass. We need help in laundering these Linens for the Lord. With a few more volunteers, your turn will only come up once about every eight weeks.

After the last Mass on Sunday, used linens are picked up and taken home for laundering. They are returned Tuesday morning to the parish office in specially labeled bags for each day. The method used is similar to your home laundry: treat stains, soak overnight in a tub, empty water onto the ground, wash in hot water, and iron. We do not launder the large altar linens, only the small purificators, corporals, wash cloths, and towels. What a blessed privilege!

We are all grateful to those who launder the Linens for the Lord: Mary Dardzinski, Ann Dolce, Cheryl Everett, Kathy Kiley, Karen Lord, Judith Mehling, Mary Nodelman, Gracie Smith. We could use your help! Please contact Cheryl Everett for more information at [email protected] or 386-237-7107.

Welcome! Registration forms are available in the Gathering Area, on our website, and in the parish office.

During Advent, as we focus on Jesus’ message of spiritual renewal and peace, let’s look for ways to work for peace and justice. As good stewards we can do this within our own families, neighborhoods, and communi-ties. Being a peaceful presence is being a bringer of Jesus.

Ethical Trade involves a number of commitments, including: paying fairly and promptly no forced labor and child exploitation providing safe and healthy working conditions providing equal employment opportunities for all

people, particularly the most disadvantaged engaging in environmentally sustainable practices investing in community development projects Ethical Trade commitments make it less likely that people will have to migrate. When we make the conscious decision to purchase Ethical Trade items, we are putting our faith into action, and working to realize the vision of economic justice. For more information on Ethical Trade, visit ethicaltrade.crs.org/why-shop-ethically/.

“[Pope] Benedict XVI reminded us that precisely because it is human, all human activity, including economic activity, must be ethically structured and governed. We must return to the centrality of the human being, to a more ethical vision of activities and of human relationships without the fear of losing something.”

– Pope Francis

Information shared between BeFrienders and those they befriend is strictly confidential. The Centering Prayer ministry is dedicated to fostering the process of transformation in Christ through the practices of the Centering Prayer, Lectio Divina, reflection/sacred sharing, and enrichment experiences. Centering Prayer is simply a wordless, trusting opening of self to the divine presence. While it is about the simplest form of prayer there is, it allows us to get in touch with our natural intimacy with God deep within us that often gets lost in the busyness of life. Weekly Centering Prayer sessions are held in the Learning Center. If you are interested in learning more, contact Sue McBride, 956-9012.

Every Friday at 10 am in the LC, Bartholomew Room This ministry makes and provides rosaries for the Missions and for parish family members. Rosary-making supplies are furnished, and beginners are given instructions in how to make a rosary. Contact Pat Quinn at 386-439-9650.

What is Cursillo? The Cursillo can help in developing a deeper understanding and knowledge of our Catholic faith as well as strengthening our conviction to live and share what is fundamental to being Christian. Calling upon the Holy Spirit for enlighten-ment and guidance, the Cursillo is delivered by a team of religious and lay people who present a series of talks to the candidates “proclaiming the best news of the best reality: That God, in Jesus Christ, loves us….” Throughout the Cursillo weekend the candidates will pray together, attend daily Mass and have an opportunity to receive the sacrament of reconciliation.

Upcoming Retreats:

What’s the story behind the Advent wreath?

Each season in the liturgical calendar comes with its own local and regional rituals. During the Advent season, wreathes adorn church sanctuaries and family dining room tables. You may have said Advent wreath prayers in childhood or taken a turn lighting the candles. The Advent wreath is full of symbolism about Christ and his coming at Christmas. The wreath is made of evergreen boughs, reminding us that the life of grace doesn’t falter with the changing seasons. It remains always remains fresh and new. Similarly, a circular wreath reminds us of the eternal, never-ending nature of God’s love. Candles remind us that Christ is the light of the world, the One who “shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” We use four candles to represent each week of Advent. Traditionally they come in the iturgical colors of the season. Purple has historically represent-ed penance and sacrifice. We see the same color for the season of Lent. On the third Sunday of Advent, however, we light a rose color. The priest will wear rose vestments at Mass. This is Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete means “rejoice” in Latin. On the third Sunday of Advent, we’re roughly halfway through the season. The Church chooses the midpoint to remind us to celebrate in the midst of our anticipation! Whatever the color and whatever the day, the Advent wreath is a beautiful practice to focus our attention on Christ’s coming at Christmas.
