FIRST READING: “We will buy the lowly for silver, and the poor for a pair of sandals; even the refuse of the wheat we will sell!” (Am 8:6) PSALM: Praise the Lord who lifts up the poor. (Ps 113) or Alleluia SECOND READING: This is good and pleasing to God our savior, who wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth. (1 Tm 2:3-4) GOSPEL: “If, therefore, you are not trustworthy with dishonest wealth, who will trust you with true ealth?” (Lk 16:11) The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the Lectionary for Mass (c) 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

Compartmentalization or consistency? In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tells a strange story of a sneaky, savvy steward that raises questions about our personal virtue. “How much do you owe? Here is your promissory note, write one for 80.” This parable isn’t advice for money management. Historically, there were many positions that acted on behalf of their masters regarding money, like cus-toms agents, household stewards, and tax collectors. Often these workers over-charged and skimmed off the top. Usurious practices like this were not in line with the traditional Jewish under-standing of money lending, which strictly forbade them from to taking interest or making a profit off of their own people. As the steward reduced the debt, he was likely writing out the amount he originally intended to take for himself. Before the steward can be commended, he needs to right the wrong done. “The person who is trustworthy in very small matters is also trustworthy in great ones; and the person who is dishonest in very small matters is also dishon-est in great ones.” This parable contains an important self-check. We have a great many things we’re responsible for that seem to have nothing to do with the kingdom of God. How do we interact in those spaces? Are we trustworthy in our dealings at work and at home? Are we honest and faithful to our commitments to family and friends? Are we honest with our money and prudent with how we spend our time? Jesus calls his disciples to consistency. How often do we expect that we can be one person one place, yet shrug off that persona in a new situation? “No servant can serve two masters.” This week, take stock of your life. All of your life. Are you living the Gospel val-ues wherever you go?

Heal us, Lord, and we shall be healed; save us, and we shall be saved; for it is You we praise. Send relief and healing for all our diseases, our sufferings and our wounds; for You are a merciful and faithful healer. Blessed are You Lord, who heals the sick.

Receive, Lord, in tranquility and peace, the souls of your servants who have departed out of this

present life to be with you. Give them the life that knows no age, the good things that do not pass

away; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

We all know what social justice is, kind of, but this active parish committee will certainly deepen your understanding and your desire to do more. The committee meets on the fourth Thursday of the month (July excluded), 7-8:30pm in the Learning Center. Meetings are not mandatory and no previous experience is necessary. It is a friendly and welcoming group of about 20-30 who spend time reading and reflecting on social justice issues from a variety of sources, discussing social issues of the day, and discerning how our Catholic faith calls us to respond to them.

This ministry encourages our faith community to live the Gospel message by supporting all human life and dignity, defending the poor, and working for justice and peace. We look for ways to stand in solidarity with those in need. We participate throughout the year in activities and projects that help us to be advocates for those who benefit from our prayers and actions.

We love new members and those who just want to stop by to have their social consciousness raised. If you are feeling a call, or just a curiosity, please contact John Bangert for more information at [email protected].

Scripture teaches us that as we learn to trust that God will provide for us, we become more inclined to share what we have with others. And we know that "the meas-ure you give will be the measure you get back." (Lk 6:38) So that brings us to stewardship. This is a way of life that recognizes God's abundance, trusts in God's love, and responds by returning those gifts in every facet of life. It's really not about money!

Our Sunday Visitor © 2004

For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you. (Luke 6:38)

The Centering Prayer ministry is dedicated to fostering the process of transformation in Christ through the practices of the Centering Prayer, Lectio Divina, reflection/sacred sharing, and enrichment experiences. Centering Prayer is simply a wordless, trusting opening of self to the divine presence. While it is about the simplest form of prayer there is, it allows us to get in touch with our natural intimacy with God deep within us that often gets lost in the busyness of life. Weekly Centering Prayer sessions are held in the Learning Center. If you are interested in learning more, contact Sue McBride, 956-9012.

The Knights have raised more than $178,500 to support disas-ter relief due to Hurricane Dorian. Supplies, food, and water are on their way to those who need it in Grand Bahama. The cost of the supplies we sent is well above what we have raised to date and the need continues to grow. In addition, we have also sent support to the communities affected in the Carolinas. With your continued generosity the Knights in the Bahamas, Florida and the Carolinas can continue to serve the affected communities in their jurisdictions. With your help, they can in-crease support and have the tools necessary to meet the needs of those we jointly serve. As Supreme Knight Carl Anderson reminds us, “When disaster strikes, we strike back with service.” What are you waiting for? Pray, serve, GIVE today – 100 percent of your support goes directly to disaster relief. To learn ways you can give, vis-it: https://www.kofc.org/en/secure/charities/disaster-relief.html

Usher Training will take place on Wednesday, October 9 from 5-7pm. Please join us for this important opportunity to learn about the safety role of ushers at Santa Maria del Mar.

If you live in the northern part of our country, you see the signs all around. Leaves turn from green to yellow to orange or red, then fall and fade to brown. Birds slowly disappear for the south. Grass withers underfoot. “To everything there is a sea-son,” we read in Ecclesiastes. The natural world speaks spir-itual truths, if only we have ears to hear. God invites each and every one of us into the seasonal pro-gression of our own conversion. No matter who we are, each of us has something in our life that is ready to turn. Is it an area where we’re weary? A good hab-it we’ve been putting off? A fa-milial reconciliation that needs to happen? As the world passes from one season to another, where is God inviting you to turn toward Him?
