The real pleasure of making their own projects①Voluntary activity groups

In order to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus infection, all scheduled events have been cance l l ed s i nce Ma rch 2 n d . Therefore, we will introduce NIA’s voluntary activity groups in a two-part series.

What are NIA“voluntary activity” groups? There are currently nine voluntary activity groups in the Association. As the name suggests, their events a re p l anned and managed by volunteers themselves with the support of the NIA staff. They have the advantage of being able to work with a wide range of ideas in a meticulous manner. Members of every group say that they enjoy themselves as much as the event participants do, and feel the joy of helping others.

●Nishinomiya Japanese Language Volunteer Group

Volunteers who have learned how to teach Japanese mainly from NIA’s training course teach Japanese to foreigners in

one-on-one or group lessons. They also offer classes called “Nihongo Nakayoshi Hiroba” for public elementary and junior high school students and their parents.

●Food Culture Exchange Volunteer Group

They enjoy exchanges with foreigners interested in Japanese food cu l ture through “food ,” introducing Japanese events and seasonal menus. They also learn about foreign cuisines.●Nishinomiya Spanish Language Volunteer Group

Their activities include holding “Spanish chat t ing meet ings ,” translating and interpreting. They also organize opportunities for na t i ve Span i sh speakers and learners to interact with each other.●Nishinomiya International Kids Club This is a playgroup with seasonal crafts and games for children with foreign roots and their parents. It also serves as a place for parents to exchange information with each other.

Yakka, that brown and flower shaped sweet you can see in towns in Korea, is a rustic sweet fried pie. It originated as a necessary sweet for tea-time during the Korai Era. During this t ime between the 10th and 14th centuries, Buddhism was actively spread. They fried a dough that kneaded medi-cine-like valuable honey and sesame oil into flour, which were quite expensive at that time, and marinated with more honey, ginger and cinnamon. Yakka had become a specialty sweet in the Korai-koku and presented to the Em-peror of China, they say. Later, although Buddhism and the tea-time event had declined due to political reasons during the age of the Ri-Kingdom, Yakka started being used at celebrations or court ceremonies. In recent years, it has gained popularity among the public. It is popular and healthy, even though the way of cooking is a little bit time-consuming. (Y. U)

Ingredients ・Flour(all-purpose flour is better)…150g・Sesame Oil ……… 2 table spoon・Salt………… a quarter teaspoon・(A)honey………… 2 table spoon

alcohol ……… 2 table spoonginger syrup…… 1 teaspooncinnamon powder…2/3 of teaspoon

・Fried oil………… proper quantity・Honey dewsugar ………………………… 100ghot water …………………… 75cchoney…………………… 3/4 cupcinnamon power…1/3 of teaspoon・Toppings…pine nuts, sunflower seeds,

nutmeg in your preferenceHow to cook①Make dough:Put flour and salt into a bowl. Add sesame oil, stir it with a spatula and knead it with your fingers until it becomes a whispery dough. (you’d better strain the dough through a rough strainer). Then add (A) in it and bring them together into one big ball and enwrap it with plastic wrap.②Make Honey dew: Put sugar and hot water into a heat-resistant container and s t i r i t up well . Microwave it for a few seconds to

help it dissolve. Pour it into a bigger container, and add honey and cinnamon.③Shape forming of dough:Roll out the dough using a rolling pin to be 1 cm thick. Fold the dough in three and roll it out again. Repeat this one more time until it’s 0.5cm thick. Cut it with a cookie cutter. (It should be about 3.5 square centimeters if you don’t have a cookie cutter). Make a few holes with a fork on the reverse side.④Fry the dough:Heat the oil over moderate heat about 2-3 minutes, put the dough in the oil when fine bubbles start coming up silently. Maintain low heat about 100 to 120 degrees, turn the dough inside out when they float to the surface and bring them out when they become golden brown. Put them into the honey dew bowl and marinate them for 2 to 5 hours. Bring them out from the bowl. Drain them on a net and decorate them with your favorite toppings.

NIA organizes various events and seminars to promote international exchanges and understanding. Let us introduce one of these programs.

The interviewee in this issue is Mr. Ryu Kosei, who is now teaching at Otemon Gakuin University and is active as a business consultant. His relationship with NIA started when he was the guest speaker for Taiwanese cooking in a food exchange event held by a volunteer group. During the time of the stay-at-home request due to the COVID19 crisis, the interview was performed via the online-system “LINE”.

As the average lifespan in the world is 74, there is an endless variety of how and where people live their lives. By the way, what kind of life do people who moved from their native countries and came to Japan live? Mr. Ryu was born in Taiwan and lived there until he was 27. He grew up as the son of a medical doctor. He had dreamed about leaving his country since he was very young, and finally put his idea into action in 1985. He had prepared to go to the United States first. He had been studying about welfare in Taiwan, and was going to major in phy ch o l o g y a t a n Amer i c a n Univers i ty . But the p lan was changed by his father’s proposal to

come to Japan to become a medical doctor. It was hard for him to enter the medical field in Japan, so he decided to change directions and was admitted into graduate school for business economics. After having taken business administrat ion courses at Kobe University of Commerce and acquiring an NBA, he found a job at JAL in Tokyo. Even though he was assigned a job where his experience in business could not be used well, he changed directions again and accepted his mission.

Years later , he changed his employment to NIPPON EXPRESS, and moved to New York. He worked for customs at JFK Airport, but still he was not using his credentials. His fate was meeting his lifetime partner in this workplace. He became acquainted with a Japanese lady who was studying in New York and married her. Their married life started in New York, however as

she was an only child and her hometown was Osaka, they decided to come back to Japan. Mr. Ryu came back to Japan again and was offered a job as a business consultant. A friend from Kobe University of Commerce offered it to him. He was finally able to use his business contacts. Being a business consultant for small and medium-sized companies, Otemon Gakuin University asked him to join their teaching staff. His old friends were his foothold into this opportunity. He got a chance to take a doctor’s course in addition to the teaching position. Mr. Ryu has been open to a variety of lifetime opportunities due to his quick determination at his life’s turning points, his education and his rich interpersonal network. But at the base is his character. As a free management scho la r a t t h i s moment , h i s gu idance to h i s students is “you should put up an antenna high and have the spirit to challenge yourself!” Even though he has been settled and having a happy life in Japan, after retiring, he wishes to go back Taiwan where his old friends and relatives are living. He’s thinking about asking his Japanese wife,

“how about we travel back and forth alternately?” (M. M)
