Mathematics

Are you a cheetah or a sloth? How quickly can you do different activities? Find a way to me yourself going up and down the stairs, putting on your coat, reading a book etc. Can you predict which will take longer?

Practise finding 1 more and 1 less than any given number. Practise adding and subtracting two numbers, by counting on and back to

find the answer.

Geography

Can you bring in a photograph of you on holiday and share it with our class. How did you get there? What was the weather like? ( please bring your photo in by the 15th Jan)

Find pictures of somewhere in the world that is different to our environment. Maybe you have been there? Talk about the differences with an adult and share with the class.

Literacy

Practise forming your letters correctly using correct pencil grip. Write some clues to describe an animal or place—can we guess what or where it

is? Can you visit your local library or find a book at home about Africa? Bring it in to

show the class. Practise your key words.

Draw a picture of some rules at school or home. Why do we have these rules?

I can think of something I would like to achieve in the New Year and draw a picture to show this. E.g. Learn to swim, ride a bike without stabilizers or get dressed or undressed by myself.

Art/DT

Make a poster of an animal you might see on safari. Construct a junk model African animal. What 3d

shapes have you used? Make a musical instrument that reflects an animal

or environment anywhere around the world.

Science

Make a fact sheet or poster about the desert, African savannah, rainforest, woodland, beach or any other environment.

With an adult I can be a fact finder and research an animal on the internet. I can create a fact page with information including a picture, the type of animal it is, where it lives (on land or in water), what it eats and any other interesting information.

Core Skills to practise every day!

Read for 10 minutes or more, and then talk to someone about what you have read. Ask an adult to sign and date your reading diary.

Practise spellings and previous spellings you got wrong. ( Year 1)

Key Word Sheets

The children have Key Word Sheets in their book bags to practise at home. We aim to check them every two weeks on a Friday and, when your child is confident at reading the words from sight, we will give them the next sheet to practise at home. Encourage your child to say the sounds in their head and just say the word aloud. Some Key Words sheets have green words, which can be read using the sounds we have learnt, and some have red words, which can only be learnt by sight. It will say on the sheet if they are green or red words.

Remember – you can use school resources (e.g. books, paper, paint, computers), just ask your teacher for permission.
