Reminder any Christmas card order forms need to returned to school by Wednesday 19th October.

This week in nursery we enjoyed listening to the story `The Nutty Nut Race`. In the story the animals were all quarrelling over the nut and being unkind to each other! We decided to write a letter to hedgehog asking him to be a good friend and share the nut. This was our first attempt at mark making for a purpose (i.e.

writing a letter) and we all had a really good try.

During our P.E session with coach Azz we took part in our own `Nutty Nut Race`. We had so much fun running around in the hall before returning to our animal homes (hula-hoops) to pretend to eat our nut.

On Friday we couldn’t believe our eyes when we came in school to find a note from hedgehog! He had come into our school to tell us how sorry he was for begin an unkind friend. We listened to the letter he had written for us telling how he was going to share all his things in future. We then followed the clues to find him in our garden.

Reception have been extremely busy this week looking for Percy the Park Keepers lost hedgehog. We have read information books on hedgehogs to find information which would help us to find the hedgehog. As a result we have created a hedgehog home, dug up worms and slugs in our mud kitchen for his food and provided him with clean water. We even made a hideout where we waited for sightings patiently with our binoculars. Our waiting paid off as on Thursday Percy’s hedgehog turned up!!!!! In our garden area – what a surprise!!

This week we have used balance scales to make playdough hedgehogs of various weights and have been playing with the sand in the sand, exploring the weight of different sand containers.

The children thoroughly enjoyed making hedgehog bread and were very keen to eat it!

We are coming to the end of our phase 2 phonics teaching this week. Next week I will assess the children against the phase 2 sounds and tricky words. Children will then either refocus on identified phase 2 sounds or move onto phase 3 phonics.

Phase 2 tricky words – I, the, no, go, to , into.

This week we have learning about Judaism. We made Hanukkah cards, Menorahs out of play dough (Jewish nine-branched candle sticks) and special foods used to celebrate the festival of Hanukkah such as potato latkes (a kind of potato fritter).

Nursery

We would like children to continue working on their number recognition skills 1-5. Children could play games such as I spy with numbers in the environment or play board games that give them the opportunity to match numerals to quantities. Recognising numerals 1-10 is our big focus in nursery this term!

Reception For home learning this week we would like children to practise reading and writing out their phase 2 tricky words. They have brought them home on a spooky bookmark today which should be kept in their reading diary. If your child is happy and confident reading and writing these words please encourage them to write a short sentence(s) containing these tricky words. They could use a different coloured pen to identify the tricky word they have used.
