Dear FCIT affiliates,

I am pleased to put in your hands the FCIT Computer Labs and Technical Support Handbook, which introduces the General and Specialized Labs of the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology. In addition to the facilities and services provided by the Labs and Technical Support Unit to the FCIT affiliates and students.

I would like also to extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to the members of the Labs and Technical Support Unit for their great efforts to develop and facilitate the academic jobs of the FCIT affiliates and students.

Introduction:

The Vision and Mission of the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology have been formulated to express its ambitious plans to achieve the highest levels of interaction and excellence in the field of Information Technology and to meet the KAU’s current and future requirements.

To prepare a generation that holds the banner of knowledge and localization of technology and to provide the latest curricula in science and computing, in addition to carry out academic research that yields qualitative outcomes in the field of computing and development of the society.

Computer Labs of the FCIT (North Jeddah Branch):

The Faculty of Computing and Information Technology (Males’ Campus) has eleven computer labs, which started as general labs, and they become specialized labs due to the advancement in the courses of the three main Academic Departments of the FCIT in the year 1430/1431. Currently, the FCIT has six specialized labs as follows:

1. Databases Lab.2. Networks Labs.3. Software Development Lab.4. Matlab & Maple Lab.5. Web Development Lab.6. Software Engineering 7. System Analysis and Design Lab.

Efforts are continued to open more new specialized labs in addition to developing the current labs to meet the FCIT aspirations and the various course requirements.

Technical Support:

About the FCIT Technical Support:

The Labs. and Technical Support Unit is the first link that provides technical support services to the FCIT affiliates and students while using the FCIT computers and facilities either inside labs. or in the affiliates’’ offices, in addition to the FCIT laptops . The Labs. and Technical Support Unit endeavors to provide immediate solutions to the technical problems as soon as possible and forwards the service request to the specialized sections in case the problem still exists. The Labs. and Technical Support Unit follows up and arranges with the other parties until the request is fulfilled.

Our Technical Support Services include:

Configuring new installations and electronic devices (Computers, printers, scanners…. Etc).

Installing software, and configuring their settings according to the KAU’s policy settings.

Configuring the KAU mail service on the Outlook Mail System. Connecting the computers and intranets to the KAU network. Troubleshooting the computer hardware problems. Troubleshooting Operating Systems and software problems. Providing training for the employees if required. Helping users to use the new devices and peripherals such as the

Smart Board, and projectors. Helping users in using the FCIT equipment and devices such as the

Smart Board and projectors...etc.

FCIT Annual Procurement Order:

The Labs. and Technical Support Unit tries its best to provide the academic members with all the software programs and equipment required for their lab. courses:

How do I apply for Lab. requirements for my course:1. Fill in the Form “Requesting Lab. Requirements”. Form L.R. 102.2. Get the Form duly signed by the Head of your Department.

When to apply for Lab. requirements?

Usually an update is circulated by the Heads of the Academic Departments to all their members about the start of application for any Lab. requirements.

Where to find the Form?

You can find the “Requirements Provision Form” at the Labs. and Technical Support Unit.

How soon my Lab. requirements will be provided?1. After being studied, your application will be enrolled within the next

lab. Requirements Order.2. It should be taken into account that the lab. equipment orders are

made once annually. Therefore, requests should be fully completed and duly signed by the Supervisors of the Academic Departments within a sufficient period of time before placing the whole FCIT annual purchase order.

Printing Facility:

Any user of the FCIT Computer labs. can make use of the printers available for educational purposes. Users have to log in using their accounts on the university system.

Terms of using the printers:

1. Printing service is found for educational purposes only.2. Providing sheets papers to feed the printer. 3. Try to print on both faces of the sheet of paper in order to help

protect the environment.

Services and Facilities Available for the Academic Members:

1. The FCIT Help Desk has provided a Laptop (HP Netbook) and a Projector (Hitachi) for every Academic Department in the Faculty.Therefore, in case you want to make use of these facilities in your lectures, you can ask for them from the Secretary Office of your Departments. As soon as you finish using them, you are kindly requested to return them so that they can be made use of by all the academic members

2. The FCIT Help Desk has provided the FTP Service which can be used by the FCIT academic members to ease the process of reaching their files everywhere within the University network. It is worth noting that this service can be only accessed using the FTP Software found on the FCIT Server.

3. The FCIT Help Desk has provided a digital camera (Nikon Brand) to be used in meetings, seminars, lectures and during visits.Therefore, in case you want to make use of this camera in your lectures, you can ask for it from the Help Desk. As soon as you finish using it, you are kindly requested to return it so that it can be made use of by all the academic members.
