SIn the novel Leviathan by Scott Westerfield, the setting starts out in two different locations. It begins in Prince Aleksander’s bedchamber (Austria-Hungary) and later takes place in London, Britain. The time period of this book is probably in the 1900s. Specifically 1914 where “The Great War” is taking place (WWI). The climate seems damp and wet in Austria-Hungary but sometimes stormy and fair in London, Britain. In my opinion the mood is anger and frustration which represents the climate very well. Later on, the scene takes place in Switzerland where Alek and Deryn meet. The Leviathan is headed on its way to France or the Ottoman Empire now due to pursuit from the Germans. At the end of the novel, the setting is the Leviathan, which is basically the setting of ¾ of the novel.

Aleksandar Ferdinand (Alek): Aleksander Ferdinand is a protagonist in this novel. He, the son of the late King of Austria-Hungary and his wife Princess Sophie (a commoner) is a dynamic character because he’s been bottling up his feelings where before he wouldn’t do that. He is one of the two main characters in this novel. The antagonists for Aleksandar are the Serbs of Sarajevo because they murdered his parents because his father was a peacemaker. Alek is brave and determined to prove he’s not a kid anymore. His master of mechaniks says Alek is good at operating a Stormwalker because the second time he got the machine to run, he didn’t fall. Master Klopp (his master of mechaniks) says that was very impressive. He is still a threat to the throne even though his mother being a commoner made his blood not royal. Alek is merely 15, but soon to be 16. He is clever and smart, but sometimes cannot hold his tongue while being disrespected. Even though he may seem a mere boy, do not underestimate Prince Aleksandar of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Deryn Sharp (Dylan): Deryn is a protagonist in this novel and the second of the two main characters. She turns out to be loyal to Alek when he tells her his secret and would disobey her captain to keep her word to him. I believe sparks are flying between her and Alek, but Deryn doesn’t want that to happen. Alek doesn’t like her that way since he doesn’t know she’s a girl, but I think they’re going to end up together in the 2nd or 3rd book. I believe she is a dynamic character because the war is changing her. Deryn is a young 15 year old girl pretending to be a 16 year old boy aboard the Leviathan. On this Darwinist creation at first Deryn can conceal her secret; but things become complicated when a lady boffin boards the ship. Deryn is worried that Dr. Barlow (the lady boffin) will discover her secret, so she does what any sensible person would do: lie low. . Her brother, Jaspert is aboard a different ship, but Deryn still ponders on what he’s doing She is very cunning and “sharp” (quick at learning new things). She is skilled in aerodynamics and can be calm in times of panic. She has been aboard the ship for a couple months now and is getting the hang of things. Deryn has seen no regular 21 century 15 year old would ever dream to see. Her fake name is Dylan, but even as a girl there isn’t much to give her away. Deryn is not a girl you want to mess with.

Otto Klopp (Master Klopp): Master Klopp is a protagonist in this specific novel and a minor character as well. Even though the war is changing everyone, I would have to say Otto Klopp is a static character because he has shown no real signs of change. Master Klopp is a “master of mechaniks” according to Alek. He has proven himself useful while he, Alek, Volger, and the servants in the Stormwalker have been on the run. He is probably middle-aged and pretty intelligent. He has helped Alek escape from the assassins trying to murder him for a couple of months now by teaching Alek the skills he needed to operate the Stormwalker. He is extremely kind, cares about Alek’s safety, and looks out for him in times of trouble. He covers for Alek when Alek messes up (which happens a lot) and considers others feelings besides his own. Otto Klopp is a very generous man.

Count Volger: Count Volger is a minor character and he is definitely a protagonist. Count Volger is Alek’s fencing master and is very experienced. Sometimes he can be hard on Alek at times and he is not easily fooled. He is an awesome fencer and looks out for Alek the best that he can. He is easily annoyed and most of the time has a bad temper. He obeys Alek’s father’s orders even though the man is deceased and swears not to tell Alek anything until he’s old enough. Count Volger is probably in his mid-forties and he’s never really happy. He was extremely intent on getting Alek to Switzerland because he and Alek’s father had bought a castle there for when the war finally started. Count Volger is a man of his word and a man you can trust. Or so you think. When Count Volger reveals that he won’t be helping Alek anymore, I was certain he was one of the “bad” guys; but Volger does care about Alek… he just has a funny way of showing it.

Dr. Nora Barlow (Dr. Barlow or Nora Darwin Barlow): Doctor Barlow is a protagonist and an antagonist in this book because she threatens to tell the wrong secret about Deryn (the secret is that Deryn is only 15) and she blackmails Alek into telling her where his family lives; but later on she proves to be a protagonist near the end of the novel because she tells Alek she won’t turn him in to the captain. She doesn’t seem like a dynamic character because I believe she will always be smart, clever, and angry if she doesn’t get what she wants. She seems to be in her early-mid thirties and always has on a bowler hat. She has dark, black, short hair and can always outwit you if you’re not quick enough. She has a dog-like creature named Tazza also. Alek and Deryn have both been outsmarted by this woman, but who else will fall into her deadly trap? Dr. Barlow has been aboard the Leviathan for a couple months now and is very upset the ship crashed into Switzerland because she has important eggs that need to be kept at a cool temperature and the Leviathan didn’t provide the smooth ride she was looking for. Dr. Barlow is a person that will always puzzle, frustrate, and annoy you; but is she smarter than you?

Rising Action:

Alek, the son of the King of Austria-Hungary runs away from home with his master of mechaniks and his fencing master because his fencing master says his father left specific instructions to prepare Alek for war. Alek controlled a Stormwalker in the middle of the night because it is a very good skill to achieve. While in the Stormwalker, Volger and Klopp tell Alek with sadness that his parents were murdered by the Serbs of Sarajevo because his father, the King of Austria-Hungary, wanted peace. At first Alek doesn’t believe this, but when he gets attacked by the S.M.S Beowulf, he realizes it’s all true.

o I would say this is person vs. fate, person vs. self, and one of the climaxes because Alek thinks Count Volger is lying when he tells him his parents are dead, which to me is person vs. self because he’s looking within himself for how this could have happened and he doesn’t believe it. When Alek realizes that his parents are truly dead because the S.M.S. Beowulf wouldn’t have attacked the Walker, I believe this is person vs. fate. It is also one of the climaxes because many things change for him after Alek’s parents die. I think this because Alek wonders what his fate will be if people are attacking him all the time and Volger says that after the emperor dies, Alek is the true heir to the throne.

Deryn Sharp, a young 15 year old girl has been posing as a boy named Dylan Sharp. She has been aboard a Huxley drifting endlessly and carelessly around London for six hours. Thankfully, the Leviathan just happened to be nearby and came to Deryn’s rescue. After this fantastic experience of being rescued by one of the greatest hydrogen breathers fabricated to the Kaiser’s zeppelins, Deryn becomes a middie aboard this fantastic ship; but she does pick up a few enemies on the way. Even though this experience was tremendous; Deryn is struggling faking her identity. Who knew being a boy could be so hard?

o I would say that this is person vs. self and person vs. person because when Deryn starts struggling pretending to be a boy, she looks inside herself and wonders how boys act like this all the time; also when a midshipman named Mr. Fitzroy gets on her nerves, Deryn plans to take

Prevenge. Deryn has been through a lot after her Da died and this is causing her to look inside herself for answers a lot.

Later in the novel, Alek brought the Stormwalker he was controlling to a run… but it fell. This caused Alek, Volger, and Klopp to go to the city of Lienz to get parts of the Stormwalker. While there Alek doesn’t talk until he feels insulted when this man refers to him as a boy. Even though Alek hears the difference in Klopp’s speech while talking to the man, Alek speaks anyway and this gives himself away. Minutes later all of them are ambushed by Austrian soldiers. While Klopp and Volger attempt to hold them off, Alek runs across a river, but is pursued by one of the soldiers. Alek just tries to get away from the soldier and disarm him, but he ends up killing him. Alek never forgot the look in the dead soldiers face and couldn’t believe he’d killed a man. The boy was just doing his job, barely 21. Alek isn’t a killer… is he?

o To me, this is person vs. person and person vs. society because when Alek is being pursued by the Austrian soldier, it’s a conflict between two people. Alek tried to hide in the tall grass, but he knew he’d be spotted sooner or later. While trying to just disarm the man, he ended up killing him. During this combat, Alek was just trying not to get caught, but during this fight Alek had done more. Alek is a good boy, but in times of war, anything can happen. I think the other conflict was person vs. society because when Alek, Klopp, and Volger are ambushed, the Austrian soldiers are mainly after Alek. This is a whole society (group of people) going against one person. That is why I think the conflicts are person vs. person and person vs. society.

Later on, the midshipmen aboard the Leviathan receive bad news. Since a new passenger is coming aboard the Leviathan their signal and navigation scores would be reviewed. This means whoever had the lowest scores were basically being “kicked off” the Leviathan because there would be too much weight. After the Leviathan lands in the smack of London, England, Deryn Sharp meets the new passenger aboard the Leviathan: Dr. Barlow. Now, Deryn is Dr. Barlow’s airman, which means they spend a lot of time together on the airship. One day, Dr. Barlow finds Deryn (Dylan) fast asleep with a razor in her (his) mug. She finds this strange since both sides of his face are equally smooth, so why would he need a razor? She brings this up to him (her) and Deryn doesn’t know what to say. Dr. Barlow suspects that Dylan (Deryn) is just a young boy in

Pthe Service, not that he’s (she’s) a girl. Since Dr. Barlow guesses this, she threatens to blackmail Deryn. It was very fortunate for Deryn that Dr. Barlow figured out the wrong secret because if Dr. Barlow found out she was impersonating a boy, who knows what would happen?

o I think this is person vs. person because Doctor Barlow threatens to blackmail Deryn later on for being too young to be in the Service. Deryn doesn’t like Dr. Barlow that much and doesn’t enjoy spending time with the boffin basically 24/7. Deryn also doesn’t like Dr. Barlow that much because since she’s a woman, she might find out that Dylan is really a girl.

Escaping the city of Lienz was tricky and dangerous, but everyone made it out in the end. After leaving the city, the group stumbles upon a landship that’s Wotan class called the Herkules. Klopp sees the ship and thinks it’s waiting for them. Alek tries to get away from the ship by night walking, but he’s spotted. After a narrow escape, Volger, Klopp, Alek, and the crewman seek shelter in a Swiss castle Volger and Alek’s bought years ago. It had ten years supply of food and Alek could finally take a nice hot bath! While at the castle, Alek and Volger see an interesting spectacle. They witnessed the fall of the Leviathan. Alek wants to help the wounded soldiers probably buried in the snow, but Volger tells him it’s too dangerous, even though they have the supplies to help them. Disobeying Count Volger’s order, Alek sneaks out in the dead of night to help the soldiers. Later on, Alek wishes at first he never went to help the Leviathan.

o I think the conflict is person vs. person because when Alek sees the Leviathan decreasing in altitude due to loss of hydrogen he knows there are soldiers on the ship. When Volger tells him it’s too dangerous because there were probably enough soldiers for them to take over the castle, Alek is infuriated that Volger would let those men die when they could help them. Alek has never liked Volger that much because he always seems to have a temper and always in one step ahead of Alek. Even though Alek disobeyed, will Volger help him if he’s captured by the Darwinists?

Climaxes:

Everything changes for Prince Aleksandar in just one night. At first, he was told by his fencing master and master of mechaniks that they were to follow specific instructions given by his father due to the upcoming war. Then, on his first night-walking lesson, he finds out they’re dead. At first, he doesn’t believe it. I mean, how could they be dead? The Serbs of Sarajevo would never kill his parents. He thought they wouldn’t dare kill the King of Austria-Hungary; but he was wrong. As soon as the S.M.S. Beowulf started its attack on the Stormwalker, he knew it was true. This is a time where everything changes for Alek. He found out he’d lost his parents forever. Instead of crying, he was silent. He cries later on in the story, but at this point, he changes. This proves he’s a dynamic character because he changes almost completely. He’s more prepared for war and he’s cleverer than ever. Alek wants the Germans to go down; and soon he might just get his wish.

o This is one of the climaxes in the novel because everything changes for Alek when he realizes his parents are dead. He becomes a stronger person for the most part, but it changes him in a negative way also. It makes him fragile when he talks about it, and when he talked to Deryn about it, he broke down sobbing. These points prove that this is a climax in the novel.

Another episode in the chapter of Alek’s life is when Alek’s and Deryn’s paths cross. Alek takes three first-aid kits with him before he snuck out. When he reached his destination, he discovered Deryn’s body half-buried in the snow. He quickly sets to work and sort of “revives” her body. While talking to him, Deryn notices that Alek is acting sort of weird and asks to meet his family, but he refuses and says he needs to get back home. Deryn tells him she needs to report him to her commanding officer and at this comment, Alek freaks out. Alek pulls out his gun and threatens her with it, even though he doesn’t want to shoot anyone. Soon some hydrogen sniffers arrive and Alek is soon taken hostage by the Darwinists. What was he going to tell Volger now?

P

o This is a climax in the novel because everything changes for both Alek and Deryn at this point. Alek tries to help Deryn out so she didn’t die from the

cold, but she kind of betrayed him when she called on the hydrogen sniffers. Everything changes for Alek, since he is taken hostage by his non-but-soon-to-be enemies. Everything changes for Deryn because she basically owes Alek her life and has never met anyone like him before. This is a breaking point in the novel.

Falling Action:

After Alek meets Deryn Sharp, things start to go downhill for him from then on. When Deryn threatens to report him to her superiors, Alek goes berserk. He draws out his gun and tries to get her to call off the hydrogen sniffers, but it’s too late. After Alek is captured, Deryn finds out a little more about these “eggs” Dr. Barlow was keeping a “military secret” about. Dr. Barlow gets mad at Deryn because Deryn promised her a “smooth ride” for her eggs… but Deryn didn’t know about the eggs since they were a secret. Later on, Alek meets Dr. Barlow and the two of them have an interesting encounter. When Alek meets her thylacine, Tazza, Alek is literally freaked out. During the encounter with Dr. Barlow, Alek warns that the Darwinists better let him go or his family would come for him; but by saying this, he revealed they weren’t too far away from here. When Dr. Barlow makes it clear that Deryn can easily find Alek’s family if they live nearby. Alek realizes he’s just made a grave mistake. What would happen if they found the castle? Alek could only gape at all the stupid mistakes he’d just made.

o I would say that for two of the things that happened here are person vs. person. When Deryn threatens to report Alek to her superiors, she’s challenging Alek because she doesn’t feel he’s being truthful about who he is and where he’s from. Since Deryn gives a question, Alek responds with an answer. He quickly reacts and draws out his gun. This instance is also person vs. person because both of them are fighting each other, even though Alek doesn’t really want to shoot Deryn. Later on, Alek is thankful he didn’t shoot and says it to her too. The points both prove that both these instances are person versus person.

The captain has some devastating news for the crewmen that survived the crash in the Leviathan. He claims with sadness that the Leviathan doesn’t have enough hydrogen to get back into the air. This makes Deryn very upset, which causes her to go out to look for Alek’s family to see if they can help. On her voyage, Deryn spots a Stormwalker approaching the Leviathan. Using a message lizard, she warns the ship, but almost too late. With a funny landing, Deryn manages to come aboard the Leviathan before the Stormwalker does. She quickly seeks out Alek and uses him as a hostage to keep the Stormwalker from shooting the Leviathan because hydrogen and fire should not mix. Volger comes aboard the ship and pretends he doesn’t speak English and Alek and he try to negotiate with the Darwinists. During the meeting, the captain states all the Leviathan needs is food and Alek and Volger agree to this; but they wanted to use Alek as insurance. Volger and Alek discuss this in German and Count Volger offers to take Alek’s place. They switch places… but later on the Leviathan is attacked by Clankers… the Germans. They just never seem to give up, do they?

o When the Clankers attack the Leviathan, it is person versus society because they’re truly after Alek, but they’ll destroy a whole airship if they have to. The Clankers want Alek dead because after the emperor dies, he would be the true heir. The Clankers want no one to be the heir, to make the people of Austria-Hungary confused and defenseless. When Deryn uses Alek as a hostage to keep the Stormwalker from shooting the Leviathan, that conflict is person vs. person.

After the Leviathan experiences great triumph when escaping from the Clankers, midshipman Deryn Sharp is requested into a meeting with the captain. Deryn feels a little uneasy because she knows she didn’t do anything bad enough to speak with the captain. Deryn finds herself surprised when the captain asks her what she thinks of their “Clanker friends”. After Alek told her his secret, Deryn is very careful about what she says to the captain, because if a man is found as a traitor during war (lying or something of the sort) he would be hanged. The captain says he wants to know because the Lord of Admiralty has become interested in them. When Deryn tells Alek, he offers to turn himself in. Deryn argues, saying they’ll take him as a hostage, but Alek doesn’t want Deryn hanged. This is when Deryn tries to tell Alek that it’s ok, and he doesn’t have

to turn himself in, but Dr. Barlow walks in and interrupts her. Did Deryn make the right choice?

o When the captain orders Deryn to find out who Alek is… Deryn is stuck. This conflict is person versus person because she wants to be loyal to Alek, but doesn’t want to lie to her captain. She tries telling Alek her secret, but Dr. Barlow bursts in… and she can’t let her know her secret. I would also say this is person vs. self because Deryn wants to do the right thing, but is it be loyal to Alek or be loyal to her captain? Deryn probably wants to be loyal to Alek since she may be starting to like him, but she has no clue what to do.

Exposition: The setting and characters of any novel, story, etc. The setting of a novel is the location and time of the novel. Characters of a novel are the people in the book and should be described in the setting.

Rising Action: The events that take place in the novel that take place before the climax or climaxes. The rising action leads up to the most exciting part or where everything changes for the main character(s)

Climax: The point of a story in which everything changes for the main character(s). Everything leads up to this point in the story.

Falling Action: The events that take place after the climax, basically wrapping up the story slowly.

Resolution: The end of the story in which the problem is resolved or unresolved.

I would say the overall mood for my novel is suspense because there is a lot of foreshadowing that makes you want to keep reading more. It is also sad, but not so much.

Mood: Dark and Mysterious

These are the moods for this passage because it makes you feel something bad is going to happen next and the words make you feel that whatever is happening isn’t normal. At first it makes you think he’s going to die, but at the last minute he comes to a halt.

Mood: Creepy and Eerie

These are the moods for this passage because it kind of makes me feel sick reading it. When I imagine crawling bugs, it just creeps me out. Also the image I get in my head is an eerie feeling and this passage obviously isn’t meant to make you feel happy.

These are the moods for this passage to me, because it makes me want to keep reading. I fear for Alek, but I wonder what’s going to happen next. This passage is very suspenseful and it really makes the book interesting, which I think is why the author put the quote on the back of the book.

The resolution of my novel is when Doctor Barlow says she has something else planned for Alek instead of locking him up and when Alek talks to the eggs, asking what’s inside them, but they don’t respond. The military secret that Doctor Barlow hides has yet to be discovered.
