Unit 4: Farewell Address

From: George WashingtonTo: Member of US GovernmentDate: September 20, 1796RE: My Farewell Address

Most of you have already seen my Farewell Address in print. I hope that you have taken my words to heart and will try to implement them as best you can. I wanted to write you today so that I could give you a better understanding of what I meant and an idea of how to make America a better place. To achieve this goal please follow these instructions. The most important step is to stay away from foreign alliances and entanglements. By doing this America will not be dragged into any foreign wars in which we do not want to fight. America is much too young to have to defend its freedom again. Second, political parties are a bad idea. Two parties will only divide the nation when bringing the nation closer together is what we need. If we can avoid these two issues, America will have a fighting chance at becoming a world superpower.

Press release to be released August 30, 1814

The British Will Retake America

Every American must rise up and defend their freedom once more. If we do not, Britain will surely retake America and make us her subjects again. America has been suffering losses habitually over the last two years. We have lost battles, lost soldiers, but no loss is more important than the loss of our capital and the White House. It has been demoralizing to our soldiers and our people. Americans must now step up the fight in order to defeat the British. Now that Britain’s war with Napoleon is over, their highly trained troops will be coming over to fight us. To defeat them, we must do all of the following. First, we must have 10,000 more soldiers join the army. Second, we must have our civilian factories produce double the amount of guns and ammunition. Finally, we must have every American defy the British whenever they see them. If we do these things we can surely win!

1. What does the word “habitually” mean?a. Neverb. Sometimesc. Regularlyd. Nicely

2. Why must Americans step up the fight at this given time?a. Napoleon has been defeated and better troops are comingb. Britain is retreatingc. America is 90% capturedd. The President has been killed in the raid on the White House

Unit 5: My Face on the $20 Bill

From: Andrew JacksonTo: Paul Johnson – United States Currency AgencyDate: August 18, 1839Re: My Face on the $20 Bill

Dear Mr. Johnson,

I have had time to reflect on my two terms as President. I would like to have my legacy to be remembered as a President who was a “man of the people.” I feel I would make a strong case to be put on the 20-dollar bill. I want to remind you of all my accomplishments. I was the first President to introduce the spoils system to national government, basing appointments on political support. Thus, patronage - present on a state level - became predominant on a national level. I used my veto power extensively. I vetoed more bills in my term of office than all the previous presidents put together. I was also the first to use the pocket veto. This was a delaying tactic in which I do not sign a bill within ten days of the end of the congressional term. This prevents it from becoming law. I feel the American people would want to have me on their currency, as well. Thanks for your time.

God Bless,

Former President Andrew Jackson

Unit 5: Land Ownership

From: Chief SiouxTo: Chief Justice Burns - United States Supreme CourtDate: February 1, 1838Re: Land Ownership

Dear Chief Justice Burns, I am upset how the United States government has treated Native Americans. Andrew Jackson was a forceful proponent of Indian removal. In 1814 he commanded the U.S. military forces that defeated a faction of the Creek nation. In their defeat, the Creeks lost 22 million acres of land in southern Georgia and central Alabama. The U.S. acquired more land in 1818 when, spurred in part by the motivation to punish the Seminoles for their practice of harboring fugitive slaves, Jackson's troops invaded Spanish Florida. Jackson's attitude toward Native Americans was patronizing -- he described us as children in need of guidance and believed the removal policy was beneficial to the Indians. He would talk to us like a father talking to a young child. I would expect more respect from a leader in American Government. I would like to see actions from the Government to change. For starters, land that is occupied by Native Americans should remain Native American land. White Americans should respect land that is not owned by them. Then, American people and Native American people should live together in harmony. Both groups of people can help the other out economically with peaceful, fair trades for goods. I hope to see changes quickly.

Sincerely,

Chief Sioux

Unit 6: Dear Editor

Dear Editor:I would appreciate your help with a problem I encountered last week while in San

Francisco. I believe we can help others to avoid the same problem by printing my story to make them aware that some of San Francisco’s businessmen are not very ethical.

I came to these parts in the spring of 1849 to stake a claim and find my fortune in gold. I purchased a small plot of land near the western edge of Fairbanks Creek. I have panned the bottom of that creek for over a year now. Last week, I finally found it…gold! I found a nugget the size of a peach. I immediately rushed into the city to sell my gold for cash when I was told that I had not found gold but fool’s gold. The clerk at Fairbanks Financial told me that I had a chunk of iron sulfide and that fool’s gold is worthless. With my head hung low, I left the worthless chunk and headed for the saloon.

Later, I saw the clerk enter the saloon hooting and hollering with a smile as big as Montana. I remained at the end of the bar and watched him buy the house a round of drinks. The barkeep asked the clerk what made him so happy, and he told a story of how he had swindled a miner out of a chunk of gold. He described it as a chunk as big as a peach. I knew then that he had cheated me. I went back to the Fairbanks Financial and reported the incident to the manager, but he said he could not help me. Please print this story so that others don’t take their business to Fairbanks Financial.

As a colonel in the Union Army, your mission is to lead your battalion of 1,300 men into South Carolina to attack General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson’s men. Be careful as Jackson and his men are heavily fortified in Platt’s Woods just south of the Columbia River. Jackson has 1,100 men serving in his battalion. His men are hungry, weak, tired, and many are ill. You will prepare your men to depart on Sunday, June 6, and you will progress 42 miles per day. At that rate, you should meet Jackson’s men in six days. You must gauge your men’s readiness and decide whether you wish to attack immediately or give them an additional day’s rest to prepare for battle. Send a private to report the outcome of the battle as soon as the fight ends. Good luck, Colonel.

I write this letter in response to your latest correspondence regarding your attempt to vote. The last four years have been brutal for both the North and the South, but we can now see the fruit born out of the terrible war. Like you, I am very excited that our people finally have been granted the right to vote for our leaders. I am very proud that you are exercising that right which has been paid for so dearly by the blood of so many. I understand from your letter that the local officials in your county have asked you to take a literacy test in order to receive a ballot. I understand that you passed the test and will be allowed to vote next week. I am sorry that your friend, James, did not pass his test.

I remember James well. His father and I worked a plantation in Georgia before the war. James never did receive any formal education, and I’m sure he cannot read since he spent his days working doing chores alongside his mother in the plantation’s main house. He was not as lucky as you to have a mother who could teach him to read and write during the evening hours. Perhaps we can teach James to read and write so that he can participate in next year’s elections. Let’s suggest to James that we meet in the old church on Baker Street every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6:00. If he accepts the offer, we can begin this Tuesday.

On May 10, 1869, as the last spike was driven in the Utah desert, the blows were heard across the country. Telegraph wires wrapped around spike and sledgehammer transmitted the impact instantaneously east and west. In San Francisco and New York, wires had been connected to cannons facing outward across the ocean. I cannot believe that we are connected from 3,000 miles away. I have a job working at a port unloading and loading ships. Most of the ships are goods that are to be taken to and from Japan. I was able to smuggle some tea from the Far East. It was so delectable, that I took more the next week. Along with this letter is money. I want you to pack up all of the belongings. Go to the train station. Buy a cross-country ticket for the whole family to San Francisco. I will then see you by the end of the week. Be careful.

Dear Local Business Man,

Let me take this opportunity to introduce myself. I am a man that believes in luxury and hope you do as well. I am sure you are tired of traveling in old dirty railroad cars. My master plan is to create a utopian society that goes beyond your wildest dreams. My first plan of action is to create the most luxurious railroad car in the world. My first attempt at a luxury car initially failed because it was too wide for railway platforms and bridges and the railroad refused to accommodate the cars. This all changed when the public first heard that my cars were used for Lincoln’s funeral procession. I am not looking for investors in this project but am taking reservations for the inaugural run. Please note that my cars include freshly prepared meals, chandeliers and even advanced heating and air conditioning. I will be in your town square tomorrow if you are interested in putting down a reservation.

Sincerely,

G. Pullman

The Zimmermann Telegram was a coded telegram dispatched by the Foreign Secretary of the German Empire, Arthur Zimmermann, on January 16, 1917, to the German ambassador in the United States of America, Johann von Bernstorff, at the height of World War I. On January 19, Bernstorff, per Zimmermann's request, forwarded the Telegram to the German ambassador in Mexico, Heinrich von Eckardt. Zimmermann sent the Telegram in anticipation of the resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare by the German Empire on February 1, an act which German High Command feared would draw the neutral United States into war on the side of the Allies. The Telegram instructed Ambassador Eckardt that if the United States appeared likely to enter the war he was to approach the Mexican government with a proposal for military alliance. He was to offer Mexico material aid in the reclamation of territory lost during the Mexican-American War, specifically the American states of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. Eckardt was also instructed to urge Mexico to help broker an alliance between Germany and Japan.

Chicago, IL 60601

Dear Agents:

Please be advised that Al Capone and his cronies have opened a new speakeasy in Chicago called the Flapper House. Capone is offering alcohol, gambling, and prostitution at his new location. We recently arrested Capone’s right-hand man, Big Nose Jones, and Big Nose has agreed to provide information to our agency regarding the Flapper House in exchange for immunity. Big Nose informed us that the password to receive entrance into the Flapper House is “Lucky 13.”

We will be conducting a raid on the Flapper House on Friday, August 21, at 10:00 p.m. We will bring sixteen, fully-armed agents to assist Agent Smith and me in the raid. Agent Smith will lead the raid by knocking on the front door and providing the password at precisely 10:00 p.m. If he is granted entrance, we will immediately follow him through the front door to begin arresting the Flapper House’s patrons and employees. If Capone changes the password and Agent Smith is denied entrance, we will regroup and barge through the service doors at exactly 10:20 p.m.

Hey Boys,

Look here, Eliot Ness and his goody-goody Treasury agents are planning to raid our joint next Friday. Big Nose is playing double-agent with the feds, and he gave them some bogus info about my new club. Big Nose told the feds that the password to get in is “Lucky 13.” Them feds sure are stupid! When has 13 ever been lucky?

Anyway, the feds are bringing some big guns with them next week. It sure would be a shame for them boys to bring all them guns and never get a chance to use them, so we’re going to be friendly neighbors and provide an opportunity for them boys to use their new toys. We will be staked out in the buildings adjacent the Flapper House. Joey and his crew will wait above the barber shop next door, and my guys will wait with me in the delicatessen on the other side. Freddy the Fish will be at the door inside the Flapper House waiting for the feds to come knocking. We’ll know it’s the feds because they will be the only ones who try to use Big Nose’s bogus password. That’s when the Fish will let the goody-goody agent inside and turn the lamp off.

That’s our signal! When the lamp goes off, we will let Ness and his jerks come running to the Flapper doors. I will fire the first shot, and then you boys let them have it! Don’t hold back boys; mow them down. We’ll send a message to all the ATF agents that we run this town. Capone is king in Chicago!

Unit 11: American Farmers Program

Notice to American Farmers from President Roosevelt:I am writing to my fellow American farmers today to inform you of an idea that I believe will alleviate a great deal of your suffering. My vice president, John Garner, and I understand that millions of American farmers have fallen on hard times over the last six years. We also understand that your struggles are not your fault. We have learned through conversations with farmers just like you that the rising cost of equipment, the high price of seed, the low market price of produce, banks foreclosing on properties that families have farmed for generations, and, perhaps most devastating, the long drought have made it almost impossible for hard-working farmers to earn a modest living. These reasons have compelled my administration to work with Congress to initiate a new program in which we will pay some farmers to NOT farm their land.

Farmers who do farm their land will benefit because there will be less produce for sale at markets driving their prices up. Those farmers will earn more for their produce. The farmers who do not farm their land will not only earn money from the government, but they can find other productive ways to use their land.

1. Who will receive government funds under FDR’s new program?a. farmers who have farmed their land for generationsb. farmers who sell the most producec. farmers who grow the most cropsd. farmers who do not grow crops

2. What does the word alleviate mean?a. to make worseb. to relieve c. to lift something upd. to provide sympathy

Dear Olivia,I want you to know that I never intended for our life to turn out his way. I had a modest dream of marrying the prettiest girl I n town, raising a couple of healthy children, and enjoying warm sunsets on our front porch on summer nights. I truly relish our first few years of marriage when that dream was a reality. I smile every time I think of our wedding and the day Rose was born. She is such a beautiful girl, and you are a wonderful mother. We had done so well in the stock market, and I was enjoying those sunsets on our porch with the prettiest girl in town just like I dreamed. But, then it all came crashing down.

I tried to pull our savings out of the bank when the market crashed, but even the banks had no money. The banks locked their doors. That is most banks. The bank where we purchased our mortgage remained in business long enough to take our house away. I can no longer watch you and beautiful little Rose shiver in this cold apartment. I can no longer bear to sit at a dinner table where the sound of rumbling stomachs has replaced the clanking of forks on plates because I cannot afford to provide food for our family. I can no longer endure your hopeless cries at night. I realize I am not a real man; I know that real men provide for their families. I am no good to you or to Rose.

I have an interview at the hotel tomorrow. If I cannot secure employment there, I will not return home. I cannot endure the humiliation, and I do not deserve such a loving family. My absence will better serve you and Rose than my presence.

Unit 12 World War II

Press Release: The Dropping of the Atomic Bomb

Why We Dropped The Atomic Bomb!

The Japanese had demonstrated near-fanatical resistance, fighting to almost the last man on Pacific islands, committing mass suicide on Saipan and unleashing kamikaze attacks at Okinawa. Fire bombings had killed 100,000 in Tokyo with no discernible political effect. Only the atomic bomb could jolt Japan's leadership to surrender.

With only two bombs ready (and a third on the way by late August 1945) it was too risky to "waste" one in a demonstration over an unpopulated area.

An invasion of Japan would have caused casualties on both sides that could easily have exceeded the toll at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The two targeted cities would have been firebombed anyway. Immediate use of the bomb convinced the world of its horror and prevented future

use when nuclear stockpiles were much larger. The bomb's use impressed the Soviet Union and halted the war quickly enough

that the USSR did not demand joint occupation of Japan.

1. What adjective best describes a person on a kamikaze mission?a. Determinedb. Unmotivatedc. Carelessd. Irresponsible

2. According to the press release, what was the only way to convince the leaders of Japan to surrender?a. Place a naval blockade around Japan

The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack against the United States' naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii by the Japanese navy, on the morning of Sunday, December 7, 1941, resulting in the United States becoming involved in World War II. It was intended as a preventive action to remove the U.S. Pacific Fleet as a factor in the war Japan was about to wage against Britain, the Netherlands, and the United States. Two aerial attack waves, totaling 353 aircraft, launched from six Japanese aircraft carriers were used.

The attack wrecked two U.S. Navy battleships, one minelayer, and two destroyers beyond repair, and destroyed 188 aircraft. The personnel losses totaled 2,388 killed and 1,178 wounded. Damaged warships included three cruisers, a destroyer, and six battleships. Vital fuel storage, shipyard, maintenance, and headquarters facilities were not hit. Unit 13: Unfair Representation

From: Sam HayesTo: CBS Executive, Jack HarperDate: December 31, 1959Re: Unfair Representation

Dear Mr. Harper,

I want to communicate my frustrations with your network’s programming. I do not feel it is an accurate representation of “The American Dream.” The image of the 1950s for many people is characterized by the TV sitcom "Happy Days." Clean cut, all-American boys and girls living life in the suburbs without a worry in the world. I live in Levittown, New York in a “cookie-cutter” house. It was arduous for me to get approved for a loan, and once I received my approval it has been a very rough transition to live as a minority in the suburbs of America. As a person with African heritage, I know I did not receive the same treatment during my real estate experience. I have traveled to the first McDonald’s Restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois. Illinois’ suburbs are practically the same as New York’s suburbs. I am asking that you follow through these actions. Analyze your current shows on CBS. Ask yourself if these shows are an accurate representation of the American people. Utilize ideas for television programs that would appeal to all American people, and not just white, middle-class citizens. I think this will help your station progress into the next decade. Thanks for your time and I anticipate seeing your program changes.

Sincerely,

Sam Hayes

From: Michael McDermott To: Sean Douglas – Jewel Store ManagerDate: November 18, 1952Re: Can I have my old job again?

Dear Mr. Douglas,

I would like to express to you my desire to work at Jewel. As you know, I have been away at war for years, and know I am home for good. I still have the characteristics of a good worker. Since my time away, I have noticed some differences in American society. I have seen an increase of consumerism. It seems like Americans are buying material goods, as a response toward the deficiency of the war time years since many people were deprived of many consumer goods and people also wanted to invest their money in something solid and stable after the uncertain war-time period. It almost seems like the more stuff you can buy, the happier you will be. Ideals and social norms sure seem to be changing. The biggest change must be with teenagers. A typical summer day is waking up and going to school or work, eating at the local McDonalds, buying goods at the mall, and socializing at the local drive-in theaters. Since more people are buying these days, I assumed you would need more people on staff to help speed up the lines at Jewel. Thanks for your time.

Civil Rights

Press Release: Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka

Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka in 1954, was a landmark decision of the United States Supreme Court, which overturned earlier rulings going back to Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896, by declaring that state laws that established separate public schools for black and white students denied black children equal educational opportunities. Handed down on May 17, 1954, the Warren Court's unanimous (9-0) decision stated that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal." As a result, de jure racial segregation was ruled a violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution. I Have A Dream

I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.

But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. And so we've come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.

Gulf Of Tonkin Resolutions

This treaty with its accompanying protocol obligates the United States and other members to act in accordance with their constitutional processes to meet Communist aggression against any of the parties or protocol states.

Our policy in Southeast Asia has been consistent and unchanged since 1954. I summarized it on June 2 in four simple propositions:

1. America keeps her word. Here as elsewhere, we must and shall honor our commitments.2. The issue is the future of Southeast Asia as a whole. A threat to any nation in that region is a threat to all, and a threat to us.3. Our purpose is peace. We have no military, political, or territorial ambitions in the area.4. This is not just a jungle war, but a struggle for freedom on every front of human activity. Our military and economic assistance to South Vietnam and Laos in particular has the purpose of helping these countries to repel aggression and strengthen their independence.

1. Accordance refers to:a. Conflictb. Againstc. Agreementd. Difference

From: Hank ShawTo: Eli WhitneyDate: November 27, 1802Re: Thanks

Dear Mr. Whitney,

Thank you for brilliant invention. As a plantation owner in the south, I was able to produce as much as ten times of cotton per year thanks to your cotton gin. I feel the success of the Industrial revolution has made its way from Europe. My slaves are able to utilize your cotton gin and produce 50 pounds of cotton per day. I notice the people in the small town where I reside are all wearing cotton clothes because so much cotton is being produced. I would venture to say that cotton is becoming the South region’s number one export. The process to produce cotton is easy too. We take the cotton from the fields. We put the cotton through the cotton gin, where the seeds are removed automatically. We gather the rest of the seedless cotton, and I ship it off to the distributor. With the additional cotton that I know can export, I was able to earn extra money and afford a nicer tractor for my farm. Your cotton gin has revolutionized the industry.

Sincerely,

H. Shaw

Unit 16: Goodyear Tires

To: Johnsville Milk CompanyFrom: Charles GoodyearDate: September 28, 1839Re: Contracting Goodyear Tires

To Whom It May Concern:

Please do me a favor, and apologize to your tires. The United States just endured one of the hottest summers in recent memory. I bet some of your tires might not have lasted through the summer due to the extreme heat. As the winter approaches, your tires have a high risk of freezing. This is one of the many problems with using rubber in its natural state. Good news, though. With the help of my business partner, Nathaniel Hayward, we have created a tire that will not melt in the summer and will not freeze in the winter. Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? This is how we formulate our tires. I mix liquid latex with sulfur before we let the sun heat it up. The heat allows the rubber to be in pliable form. I put this sulfur-rubber concoction onto a wood burning stove, and this produces the world’s first vulcanized rubber. Don’t be a fool and make this mistake again. Use Goodyear tires and don’t let the weather halt your next shipment.

Unit 18: Eviction NoticeTo: Mayor DaleyFrom: H and G Developments. Re: Eviction NoticeDate: December, 8th 1990

Dear Mayor Daley,

I am asking for police support when I need to deliver eviction notices to 10 apartment buildings on the block of South Wabash. I understand you denied my first request for police support and felt it necessary to explain my point of view. We no longer live in a world of urban flight. The cities are becoming more popular. Property values in Chicago are low and I feel my investment in rehabbing the apartment buildings will help the city of Chicago receive higher tax benefits. I do feel bad that the tenants will lose their homes but it is necessary for me to raise the rent once the project is completed. You might want to consider finding alternative homes for those affected. Many upper class suburban dwellers moving to the city will also boost the economy as well. Gentrification is occurring and I respectfully ask you help me in the process by providing police support when eviction notices are implemented.
