Backpacking in Mexico(a)

M1  Así que Belen ¿cuándo te fuiste a Méjico?

F1  Fui en primavera del año pasado porque quería evitar la estación de huracanes que empieza en junio. Pasé un mes allí.Pause and repeat.

(b)

Pause and repeat.

(c)

M1  ¿Así que fuiste tú sola?

F1  Sí, pero nunca me encontraba sola. Siempre había alguien con quien hablar e hice muchos nuevos amigos, ¡incluyendo a mi novio Pablo!

M1  ¿Recomiendarías este tipo de vacaciones?

F1  ¡Claro que sí! Me lo pasé fenomenal. No obstante, hace falta tener sentido común y tener cuidado. Por ejemplo, es poco aconsejable llevar grandes cantidades de dinero contigo si viajas solo ni tampoco caminar solo de noche.

M1  Muchas gracias por los consejos, Belén.

F1  ¡De nada!

A Spanish festival

Part 1

F1 Pablo, ¿cuándo volviste?

M1 Llegué agotado anteayer a media tarde.

F1 ¿Qué tal la fiesta?

M1 Fenomenal.

Examiner's Report

Q1.

This question targeting Grade C required candidates to fill in a form in English. This question was done well by most candidates although some had problems identifying the correct day. Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday commonly appeared in (a). It would seem that a high proportion of candidates were not able to target the correct time in (b) as answers given included: 7.30, 10.30, 12, 8, half past, morning and noon amongst others. The main difficulty lay in (c) as very few candidates correctly understood ayuntamiento. Incorrect answers included: in front of the library, outside the hotel, opposite the shop, in the town centre, down the road, next to the tourist office and in front of the train. There were not many difficulties with (d) apart from some interpretations such as shopping centre, landmarks, the church, monuments and swimming pool.

Q2.

(crossover question)

This multiple choice question targeting Grade C required candidates to listen to a short dialogue taking place at a train station. At Higher Level practically all candidates scored the maximum 4 marks for this question with a small number obtaining 3 marks.

Q3.

This question targeted Grade C and the task type required candidates to listen to Pastora talking about her holiday. The question was a good discriminator as the performance of Higher Level candidates far surpassed that of the weaker candidates. Almost all Higher Level candidates scored 3 to 4 marks whereas at Foundation Level candidates tended to score 2 marks. Miscomprehension of creo que los edificos antiguos son una maravilla, no necesitamos llevar sudadera, mi cuarto daba a la carretera and siempre había demasiada gente meant that many Foundation candidates were not able to score the marks.

Q4.

Question 3 required candidates to listen to two short dialogues which took place in a tourist office and to select items referred to in the conversations from a number of listed possibilities. Most candidates scored 2 of the 4 marks available for this question. Problems encountered were mainly with Cristina's questions and the matching of the heard castillo and catedral with the given prompt monuments. With David’s questions there was some confusion between enfrente del parque, the prompt for directions to the cafeteria the destination itself.

Q5.

Question 3 which targeted grade B required candidates to listen to Daniela and Raúl talking about camping trips. They had to select four possible answers from a series of multiple choice options. The majority of candidates performed well although Yo siempre he disfrutado encontrándome al aire libre in (ii) proved difficult for some. Equally in (iv) no se gasta casi nada proved to be challenging for many. Nevertheless, many candidates scored the maximum four marks available.

Page 26: Web viewMARKSCHEME GCSE Spanish Listening (H) Out and about Tourism Date: Time: 1 hour 5 minutes Total marks available: 64 Total marks

Q6.

Question 6 required candidates to interpret messages received from listening to an announcement at the airport. They had to select four possible answers from a series of multiple choice options. The majority of candidates gained at least one mark out of four. More frequently incorrect responses were (b) niebla and weather (i) and (d) número de puerta and gate number (ii)

Q7.

This question, which targeted Grade B, required students to listen to some friends talking about their problems at the airport. Largely candidates performed well although in (i) mi avión salió con retraso debido a las tormentas de verano proved difficult for some. In (ii) mi maleta tardó en llegar was misunderstood by about a third of candidates. In (iii) failure to understand casi perdí el vuelo porque no se oían bien los anuncios por los altavoces del aeropuerto was problematic for many. Equally, in (iv) misunderstanding of no había suficientes asientos, así que tuve quedarme de pie hasta subir al avión prevented 40% of candidates from accessing the mark. Nevertheless, many candidates achieved maximum marks.

Q8.

This question tested candidates' ability to recognise opinions and details from a longer extract of dialogue which contained familiar language in a less familiar context. This was based on a dialogue which took place in a hotel relating to booking details for a holiday in Spain. This question proved to be quite demanding for some candidates. Answers (b) and (c) were more successfully achieved than items (f) and (g). In item (f) candidates perhaps failed to equate sólo come verduras with being a vegetarian and in (g) many candidates simply failed to recognise the verb alquilar.

Q9.

Candidates were required to answer specific questions in English based on Belen's account of her backpacking adventures in Mexico. Many candidates understood parts of the spoken text but often failed to understand the entire sentences or to read the questions carefully enough which led to incorrect answers being given. In section (a) (i), for example the reference to, junio in the text was widely misinterpreted to mean last summer rather than last year or last spring as required to score. In (a)(ii) many candidates failed to recognise estación de huracanes. Answers given to section (b) were largely successful. In section (c) and in (i) and (ii) answers were often too general to score. There was evidence here too of significant guesswork often relating to previously set questions of this type relating to aspects of personal safety.

Page 27: Web viewMARKSCHEME GCSE Spanish Listening (H) Out and about Tourism Date: Time: 1 hour 5 minutes Total marks available: 64 Total marks

Q10.

This question targeted Grade A and again this year it would seem that there were some candidates who had been entered for the Higher Tier when the Foundation Tier would have been more suitable. The question required candidates to listen to Maribel talking about her gap year in Ecuador. For those aiming at the top grades there have to be some challenging elements and the question was appropriately pitched. Unfortunately still too many candidates fail to read the rubric and answer in Spanish automatically depriving themselves of 8 marks. Too often presentation is messy, handwriting is difficult to read, candidates do not write on the lines provided and they write too many answers when only the first answer is marked.

(a) Almost 75% of candidates scored the one available mark. Candidates who misunderstood Me marché poco después de haber cumplido los diecinueve años y me quedé un mes produced answers such as: before University, 19 years ago, 9 years ago, 29 years ago, last month, on the 12th of March.

(b) 80% of candidates answered the question correctly although candidates who answered incorrectly tended to misunderstand una tía de mi madre. Examples of incorrect answers included: with an old friend of her Mum, in a camp with her Mum, in the mountains, with her Mum, with her aunty, with her Mum's cousin.

(c) Candidates coped well in general with this question although few knew the meaning of belleza and siglos pasados. Other candidates mentioned a traditional country rather than referring to traditions. A number also thought that Maribel was from Ecuador and that she was going to visit her family and many said that she was interested in dance as opposed to regional dancing. Other examples of incorrect answers were: to see the antiques, to relax, to find herself, to meet people of other nationalities, to improve her Spanish, for the history, to visit her Mum and for the hot weather.

(d) This question provided many good responses. Some candidates however confused campesinos with camping or casinos. Para mucha gente was heard by many to indicate hay mucha gente hence producing answers such as there are lots of people. Most candidates picked out difficult but thought that it was difficult to get around or difficult to get a house. Water was recognized but unfortunately many decided to add hot water or clean water which lost them the mark. Other incorrect answers included: no houses, nice food, dirty houses, camping is hard, you can't drink the water, nice food, a hard language.

(e) This was the most challenging question as in order to score a mark candidates needed to include unfortunate or needy in their answers, so many answers which simply said make a positive contribution or help others failed to obtain a mark. Desafortunados was not known by many, nor was ratos inolvidables. Looking for adventure was indeed a popular answer. Examples of wrong answers included: young/old/retired/positive people, people on a gap year, people who like nature, people with unfortunate lives, those who like exotic holidays, anyone who likes the country, people who want to contribute to something positive.

Q11.No Examiner's Report available for this question

Q12.

Q targeted Grade A and it was clear that there were some students who had been entered for the Higher Level when the Foundation Level would have been more appropriate as this was a challenging question and stretched all but the most able. At times presentation was poor, handwriting being almost illegible or hard to decipher, answers were written above or below the line, there were occasions where students wrote multiple answers when only the first answer is accepted. Students should be reminded that if they alter answers it is quite clear which is their final answer and also that this question requires the answers in English which is clearly outlined in the rubric. A number of students answered in Spanish and therefore scored zero marks. Students often misread the questions, often mistaking "when" for "where" and "what" for "where" thus providing wrong answers. Students were required to answer specific questions relating to Marisa talking to a travel agent.

Page 28: Web viewMARKSCHEME GCSE Spanish Listening (H) Out and about Tourism Date: Time: 1 hour 5 minutes Total marks available: 64 Total marks

Q(a) Pasado mañana was understood by very few students. Students only heard the word mañana and failed to hear the rest of the answer thus giving tomorrow or in the morning as their answer. Other incorrect answers included: next week, next month, next summer, Thursday morning and some students referred to a time in the past eg last year/month. Many students who misread 'when' as 'where' produced answers such as; Canada, France, the Andes, Europe, Spain, los Picos de Europa.

Q(b) Many students understood the meaning of lujoso with some poor spellings of luxurious at times and many also grasped the idea of a good price but there was a considerable amount of guesswork nevertheless. Incorrect answers included: the hotel is clean, modern, expensive, colourful, near the sea, in a good location, is old, has lots of facilities, is relaxing.

Q(c) Few students answered this question correctly. Most common answers mentioned storms, rain and even heat. Examples of incorrect answers include: so she knows what to pack, she wants a sun tan, she wants to swim, she doesn't like bad weather, she wants to go out at night, to check it won't rain, it was bad last year.

Q(d) Many students answered mountain climbing or walking correctly but very few understood visiting a cave and even fewer understood visiting a farm. Botas was frequently rendered as boat trips whilst other incorrect interpretations included: canal trips, sailing, horseriding, visiting the city, day trips, skiing, nightclubs.

Q(e) Many students understood the idea of traditional food but a few left taverna in Spanish. Teleférico was frequently rendered as ferry trips rather than cable car and piragüismo was often understood to mean parachuting. Other misinterpretations included: skating, surfing, diving, cycling, massage, going to the beach.

Q13.

This question relating to Pablo's visit to a Spanish festival targeted Grade A and it would appear that again it would have been more appropriate for weaker candidates to have been entered for the Foundation paper as there is no doubt that this question was difficult for them as only the more able candidates were able to supply the detail and accuracy required. The quality of some of the written answers was poor in many cases with a few examples of illegible handwriting. There was also a lot of crossing out and writing the answers in the incorrect place. Spellings such as still/stole for steal, robed for robbed were seen on several occasions as well as the grammatically incorrect thieving and robbing. When asked to give two details, some candidates presented comprehensive answers, with the correct information given as the third or fourth point, so subsequently the marks could not be awarded. Some candidates had even circled the “two” details, inferring that they had understood the requirements, before listing many options. Unfortunately there are still a few candidates answering in Spanish and thus depriving themselves automatically of a possible 8 marks.

Part (a)  (i)  Almost 75% answered correctly but there are still many candidates who obviously had difficulty understanding anteayer despite the word being included in the Edexcel vocabulary list. Incorrect answers included: late yesterday, late in the afternoon, yesterday afternoon/ evening, midnight.

Part (a)  (ii)  Many understood “music” and were awarded the first mark. Many answered “dancing and music” and were fortunate to be awarded the mark.

Fewer candidates accessed the second mark as they did not understand the reason. Many opted for the activities first and incorrect answers included: parades, parties, running with friends, meeting new people, games, going to the castle amongst others.

Part (a)  (iii)  Very surprisingly only just half of the candidates answered correctly this very straightforward question. Incorrect answers included: 7/3/12/days, the weekend, a few days, several days, 1 day.

Part (b)  (i)  Most answers referred to being robbed/having objects stolen, with a few references to pickpockets. Fewer accessed “risk of falling over”. Several candidates simply wrote “lots of people”, which

was not in itself to gain a mark. “Lots of people so risk of being robbed” was successful. As this was a one mark question, a candidate who responded with “some festivals can be dangerous because there are lots of people, you can hurt yourself or get robbed” was not awarded a mark, as the correct answer was offered in third place. Guesses included: it's rough, fights, drugs, your tent can be robbed, people carry knives, people get drunk, drug cartels.

Part (b)  (ii)  Many candidates successfully grasped the idea of being accompanied but some thought that visitors should “stay with friends” which was not clear enough and could refer to accommodation. Another popular answer was that they should “stay in a hotel”, not understanding that the advice given was to have the hotel details with them. Despite the “no” and “nunca” some still thought they should keep valuables with them and some translated “lleves” as “wear” rather than “take”. Examples of wrong answers included: Don't get into a fight, stay out of the crowds, be careful, don't talk to strangers.

Part (b)  (iii)  Almost 75% answered this question correctly. Some weaker candidates however who misunderstood the answer wrote answers such as: move house, live in Seville, go to more festivals, go to Valencia, study in Valencia, live in another country.
