OPENING TIMES

The Pre-School is open 38 weeks each year for term time only. Our current opening hours can be found on our website. Our telephone number is 01326 281525Our email is [email protected] more information you can also visit our website www.stkevernepreschool.weebly.com

FEES AND FUNDING

The fees are currently £11 per session or paid by grant funding as individual sessions. Invoices will be issued at the beginning of each half term and payment MUST be made before the end of the half term. For your child to keep their place at pre-school you must pay your fees on time, any fees not paid by the end of the previous half term will result in the child’s place being withdrawn. Fees must still be paid if your child is absent for a short period of time, however if your child is expected to be absent for a long period please talk to a member of staff. All three and four year olds will be funded up to 15 hours per week for 38 weeks of the year. This will start the term after their third birthday. Our sessions are for 3 hours each. You can use your funding for more than one setting, i.e. claim 3 mornings here and 2 sessions at another setting. However the minimum session must be 3 hours and the maximum 6 hours each. You will need to decide at the start of each term, as claim forms detailing the sessions claimed need to be completed and returned within deadline dates. If you have any questions about fees or nursery funding please speak with Claire. Some two year olds may also be entitled to receive funding, please speak with Claire or contact Family Information Services 01208 265688.

ABSENCES AND NON-ATTENDANCE

If you are planning holidays in term time you must tell us about these so we can record them in our register.

If your child is sick or cannot attend for some reason please phone or email the setting by 9:15 to notify us.

If your child is absent and we have not been notified, the manager will try to contact you before the end of the session to establish why your child is absent. If we are concerned about the welfare of a child we reserve the right to contact social services.

PARENTS AS PARTNERS

The Pre-School extends a general invitation to parents/carers to become involved with the Pre-School, and all parents/carers are invited to join the Pre-School committee/fundraising group. The group meets at least once every term. Parents/carers will also be invited to join us on trips and outings.

KEY PERSON

The Pre-School will allocate a key person to your child. This will be the person responsible for observing your child and starting to complete their learning journeys (it does not mean this is the only person they will play/work with). Your child's key person will work with you on the best way to settle your child, and will be available to give you feedback at the end of each session.

STAFF AT PRE-SCHOOL

All staff who work at the Pre-School have all the required D.B.S. checks and have gone through a robust recruitment procedure. Staff sign a declaration termly to declare that they have not received any convictions since last signing and that they are fit and healthy to continue to work at Pre-School. The manager is Claire Smitheram, the deputy is Stephanie Pearce, the Pre-School assistants are Mandy Pound and Andrea Laity. More information on the staff can be read on the playroom door.

STARTING AT ST KEVERNE PRE-SCHOOL

Most children settle happily into Pre-School within a week or two. However, if you or the staff feel that your child needs some extra support in settling please do not worry about this. It is normal and your child's key person will liaise with you on the best method to settle your child. A copy of our settling in policy is available upon request.

TOILET AND TOILETING

We prefer all children to be toilet trained before admission, if they are not we will work closely with you to support your child in becoming toilet trained. The toilet area is separate from the main playroom with low level toilets and sinks. Although staff are there to assist the children when necessary, we aim to encourage independence so please consider accessibility of clothing. Some younger children may be in the early stages of toilet training and their needs will be met. Please supply a generous supply of spare clothing if your child is potty training.

CLOTHING

The Pre-School provides protective clothing for children when playing with messy activities, but parents/carers should be advised not to send children in their best clothes! We ask that each child has spare clothes on their pegs at all times. We require children to wear welly boots to school every day and then have slippers kept at school that they can change into. Children should be prepared for relevant weather which means coats, jumpers or summer clothing. We do go outside whatever the weather and so you should be prepared for this! We provide winter hats, gloves and sunhats. Pre-school polo shirts and jumpers can be ordered if required, please speak to Claire to do this.

INFECTIOUS ILLNESSES

Medical guidelines from OFSTED instruct us to exclude any child suffering from an infectious illness. These exclusion periods are clearly displayed on the notice board for parents to read. We ask you to also remember that when a child is ill, Pre-School is not the place for them. Staff will refuse to admit any child that they believe is unwell and will contact a parent/carer to collect their child if they become unwell during a Pre-School session. Children who experience sickness and/or diarrhoea MUST be kept at home during the illness and remain at home for at least 48 hours after the last attack of sickness/diarrhoea. Staff will refuse to admit any child that they believe has not been clear for the required 48 hours. Any child showing symptoms of either illness will be sent home.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Regular inspections of the Pre-School premises and all equipment are made to ensure that they meet fire and safety regulations. The Pre-School is fully insured and details of the insurance policy are available at any time. Any accident that occurs in the Pre-School is recorded into an accident book and parents are asked to read and sign the record at the end of the session. If any accident occurred at home the Pre-School should be made aware of this so that we can record this on an existing injuries sheet.

SPECIAL NEEDS

Whenever possible children with special needs will be welcomed at the Pre-School. Each child will be considered individually, in co-operation with the parents/carers and other professionals. If the staff identify a special need, this will be discussed with the parents/carers and records will be kept in according to the code of practice for special educational needs and disabilities. Special Pre-School help will be sought if appropriate. The Pre-School Special Educational Needs and Disability Co-Coordinator is Claire Smitheram.

DISCIPLINE

If a child has undesirable behaviour, causing disruption to others, he/she will be spoken to and if necessary moved to another activity. If the problem continues we will talk to the child’s parents/carers and as far as possible, work in partnership with them to deal with the behaviour. The children will be constantly given positive reinforcement and continued praise. We always remember that the children in our care are very young and we make it very clear that it is the behaviour and not the child that is unwelcome.

INCLUSION STATEMENT

At St Keverne Pre-School we believe every child has a right to attend and we aim to be inclusive. That means we try to meet each child’s needs as we find them. We do not treat all children the same, they are all unique. We do however treat all children with respect. We also treat all parents with respect. Before enrolling your child at our setting you should consider the following statement carefully.

Sometimes children with additional needs behave in ways which other children’s parents may find difficult. We do not condone or accept unwanted behaviour from any child. We address it appropriately and according to the child’s individual needs. We also do not judge or condemn any children with behaviour difficulties or their parents. We aim to protect and cherish all children in the setting. Every new child is a learning experience for us. Sometimes it takes us a while to get this right.

POLICIES

Copies of the Pre-School policies are available upon request. The Pre-School’s policies help us to make sure that the service provided by the Pre-School is a high quality one. We regularly review our policies to make sure that they are kept up to date and in line with current legislation on childhood care and education. Policies are also available on our website.

SNACK TIME

At snack time each child is entitled to one third of a pint of cow’s milk. If a child does not want milk they can have water. Suitable alternatives would be made for a child with allergies. Children are encouraged to eat a selection of fruit and a plain biscuit. We ask that parents to make a contribution of 50p per day towards snack costs. We would prefer this to be paid half termly in advance. If your child has any special dietary requirements you should write these on the registration forms and talk to a member of staff. Water is always available for children if they are thirsty and we encourage the children to help themselves to this. We see snack time as a social time where children and adults sit together; this also gives us an opportunity for a small or large group discussion. Children are encouraged to sit at the table and eat and drink independently and to clear away after themselves.

THE INTERNET AND SOCIAL NETWORKING WEBSITES

Everyone recognises the important place that social networking sites play in this day and age. The various social networks are an excellent way of staying in touch with friends and family, near and far, and a great way to share photographs and recent events. However, these sites MUST NOT be a way to raise concerns about aspects of Pre-School life. Whilst we recognise that people will inevitably discuss issues with their Facebook ‘friends’ we would encourage parents to speak to a member of staff, the committee Chairperson or to follow the complaints procedure in our policies (copy available upon request). Our staff all work extremely hard to provide the children with a good education in a caring environment. Whilst we are always willing to discuss any issues or concerns you may have about the Pre-School with you, and take complaints you may have very seriously, please give careful thought how comments on social networking sites cause distress to those who work so hard in the children’s interest. As a Pre-School we will never consider it acceptable for anyone to post negative comments about a child, or named member of staff. Such comments constitute defamation and in exercising our duty of care to both our children and staff we will always take appropriate action to ensure such comments are removed. The Pre-school committee has a Facebook page where any of the latest communications from management are posted and any fundraising events etc. Michaela Peters is the admin for this page.

PHOTOS

We use photos in the children’s learning journeys to help record your child’s progress and to celebrate their achievements. Photos of your child may also be included in other children’s learning journeys. All photos taken at playgroup are stored in digital form and are for playgroup use only. All photos stored of your child will be deleted from our systems as soon as they leave the pre-school. Photos of your child may also be used on our website. There is a separate consent form for photos.

ONLINE LEARNING JOURNEYS

We use a system called Tapestry on which we complete your child’s learning journey. Upon joining the Pre-School you will be sent an activation link with which you will be able to access your child’s online learning journey. We ask that you also make comments and observations on this and share any information about your child’s learning. With your permission we are also able to set relatives up on this system to access the journals. Tapestry conforms with the Data protection legislation of May 2018 and a copy of the contract can be seen on request.

INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION

All communications are posted on the playgroup messenger page. Parents should inform us on registration if they do not have internet or email access, and they can be supplied in printed form. We have a parent noticeboard in the cloakroom which contains a section of important notices and also other sections relating to staff, committee details, and other relevant information. Parents should be aware of this board and check it regularly for information. Staff are available at the start and end of each session to speak to, but if it is not convenient or you would like a private meeting then they will be happy to arrange a mutually convenient appointment.

OFSTED INSPECTIONS

As we are a sessional playgroup receiving Nursery Education Funding, we are required to have OFSTED integrated inspections. These will look at the quality of care as required by the National Standards and the quality of education set out in the foundation stage curriculum. Our last inspection took place 11/11/2014 and a copy of the report is available to view on the noticeboard. (This can also be viewed on the OFSTED website and the pre-school website). OFSTED inspect the setting to see how we are meeting the following outcomes; Helping children to be healthy, Protecting children from harm or neglect and helping them to stay safe, Helping children enjoy and achieve, helping children make a positive contribution to the provision and the wider community, Organisation. We are delighted we achieved good in all areas of our inspection.

WHAT IS THE EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE?

Welcome to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which is how the Government and early years professionals describe the time in your child's life between birth and age 5. This is a very important stage as it helps your child get ready for school as well as preparing them for their future learning and successes. From when your child is born up to the age of 5, their early years experience should be happy, active, exciting, fun and secure; and support their development, care and learning needs. Nurseries, pre-schools, reception classes and childminders registered to deliver the EYFS must follow a legal document called the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework.

What is the EYFS framework-why do we have one?

The EYFS Framework exists to support all professionals working in the EYFS to help your child, and was developed with a number of early year’s experts and parents. In 2012 the framework was revised to make it clearer and easier to use, with more focus on the things that matter most. This new framework also has greater emphasis on your role in helping your child develop. It sets out;

The legal welfare requirements that everyone registered to look after children must follow to keep your child safe and promote their welfare.

The 7 areas of learning and development which guide professional’s engagement with your child's play and activities as they learn new and knowledge.

Assessments that will tell you about your child's progress through EYFS. Expected levels that your child should reach at age 5, usually the end of the reception year,

these expectations are called the 'Early Learning Goals (ELGs). There is also guidance for the professionals supporting your child on planning the learning activities, and observing and assessing what and how your child is learning and developing.

What does it mean for me as a parent?

Ensuring my child's safety. Much thought has been given to making sure that your child is as safe as possible. Within EYFS there is a set of welfare standards that everyone must follow. These include the numbers of staff required in a nursery, the qualifications of the staff, how many children a childminder can look after, and things like administering medicines and carrying out risk assessments.

Page 7: stkevernepreschool.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewYou will need to decide at the start of each term, as claim forms detailing the sessions claimed need to be completed and returned

Quality

You can find out more about the quality of your child's nursery and other early years providers in relation to the EYFS Framework by checking what the Government's official inspection body for early years, OFSTED, has to say about it. You can find this information at

www.ofsted.gov.uk/inspection-reports/find-inspection-report

How my child will be learning.

The EYFS Framework explains how and what your child will be learning to support their healthy development. Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through 7 areas of learning and development.

Children should mostly develop the 3 prime areas first. These are:

Communication and language; Physical development; and Personal, social and emotional development.

These prime areas are those most essential for your child's healthy development and future learning. As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas. These are:

Literacy; Mathematics; Understanding the world; and Expressive arts and designs.

These 7 areas are used to plan your child's learning and activities. The professionals teaching and supporting your child will make sure that the activities are suited to your child's unique needs. This is a little bit like a curriculum in primary and secondary schools, but it's suitable for very young children, and it's designed to be really flexible so that staff can follow your child's unique needs and interests. Children in the EYFS learn by playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outside.

You should be able to get information about your child's development at any time and there are two stages (at age 2 and again at age 5) when professionals caring for your child must give you written information about how he or she is doing.

When your child is 2

At some point after your child turns 2, the professionals working with your child must give you a written summary of how your child is progressing against the 3 prime areas of learning;

communication and development; and physical development, and Personal, social and emotional development.

This is called the progress check at age 2.

This check will highlight areas where your child is progressing well and anywhere they might need some extra help or support - and how mums and dads and other family members or carers can work with the key person to help. You might find it useful to share the information from the check with

Page 8: stkevernepreschool.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewYou will need to decide at the start of each term, as claim forms detailing the sessions claimed need to be completed and returned

other professionals such as health visitors (who can use it as part of the health and development review).

When your child is 5

At the end of the EYFS - the summer term of the reception year in school , teachers complete an assessment which is known as the EYFS Profile. This assessment is carried out by the reception teacher and is based on what they, and other staff caring for your child, have observed over a period of time. Another important part of the EYFS Profile is your knowledge about your child's learning and development, so do let your child's class teacher know about what your child does with you: such as how confident your child is in writing their name, reading and talking about a favourite book, speaking to people your child is not familiar with, or their understanding of numbers. All of the information collected is used to judge how your child is doing in the 7 areas of learning and development. Finding out at this stage how your child is doing will mean that the teacher your child has in their next school year- year 1- will know what your child really enjoys doing and does well, as well as helping them to decide if your child needs a bit of extra support, what that support should be and if they are already getting it.

The school will give you a report of your child's progress, including information from his or her EYFS Profile.

You can find the Early Years Foundation Stage which includes the early learning goals at www.foundationyears.org.uk. The foundation year’s website also includes a range of resources and contacts.

We hope that your child will have a happy experience during their time with us at Pre-School and we look forward to

getting to know them and your family.
