Year 2 Autumn 2 Newsletter

We have had another busy term in Year 2 and all of the children should be proud of how hard they have worked. Thank you for all your support again this term, we really do appreciate it. We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Maths

We have been working on subtraction, multiplication and division using a range of pictorial and written methods. We have been using the outdoor environment to enhance our learning in maths. In addition to this, we have been working on our reasoning skills to deepen our understanding of all four operations. The children have been solving open-ended problems and proving calculations through reasoning. We have seen good progress in the children’s knowledge of the 2, 5 and 10 times tables- well done!

EnglishIn English, we have read the stories the ‘Runaway Chapatti’ and the ‘Tiger Child,’ related to our topic India. The children have been learning to use expanded noun phrases, conjunctions and adverbs in their writing. The children have also learnt how to use inverted commas in their writing, to show when a person is speaking.

To develop their skills of writing non-fiction texts, the children followed instructions to make a chapatti and then wrote their own. The children were learning to use time adverbials, imperative verbs and adverbs in their set of instructions. They had lots of fun making the chapattis!

TopicIn topic during this half term, we have been learning about ‘India.’ We have compared traditional Indian mud huts to our own homes. As well as that, we have learnt about animals that live in India, Indian transport and we even got to try some tasty Indian food! Thank you to Mr and Mrs Sanjay for cooking and bringing in the delicious, Sri Lankan delicacies.

ScienceThe children have been exploring different materials in Science. They tested different materials to see which would be the most suitable to make a mop from. The children did this by testing which material absorbed the most water. In addition to this, they took part in a very exciting experiment called ‘Dancing Raisins.’ They explored density and buoyancy- ask your child to show you this experiment at home!

Spellings We would like to thank you again for supporting your children with their spellings at home. They have continued to learn their Year 2 common exception words in class and have learnt more spelling rules to help with all the Year 2 words.

PEIn PE, children have been learning Bollywood style dancing. They worked in teams to choreograph their own routines, drawing these to help them to remember them. They enjoyed the opportunity to perform these at their celebration assembly.
