MondayDate: 1/04

As we come back from our winter recess, we are going to be discussing a new theme this month: water. Water comes in many forms and this month we are going to learn about each one. We are going to start our unit learning the water cycle song, acting out the words as we go along. This song will help us as we delve deeper into the various forms of water.

The water cycle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?

Art: Create your own water cycle diagram after looking at our class poster.

Writing: Use crayons/pencils and paper to trace the letters in their name or other items around the room.

Literacy/Library: Children will use pictures to create a collage of words that start with letter c.

Dramatic Play: Children can act out the water cycle and pretend to move around just as the water does.Math: Number of the week (13). Count thirteen items from a bunch. Represent the number on a paper, using various arts and crafts materials.

Science: Review the water cycle. Look at the diagram and try to remember some of the words. Play a matching game to try and match the pictures/words to the water cycle chart.Blocks: Use blocks to build or represent the water cycle. Build a mountain, lake, or cloud to represent the different parts of the water cycle.

Now that we have begun to discuss the water cycle, I will show the children a hands-on model of the water cycle. This will allow us to gain a better understanding of the forms water can take. Children can touch the plastic bag to explore the different parts of the cycle. We will also be making a class chart that we will refer to throughout the month.

Art: Use a plastic Ziploc bag to represent the water cycle.

Writing: Dip fingers in paint and trace or write letters based on skill.

Literacy/Library: Children will walk around the classroom identifying objects that start with letter c.

Dramatic Play: Children can pretend to put on different winter items to keep them warm outside, such as a hat, gloves, jacket, boots, and a scarf.Math: Review shapes and creating shapes with different lines. Try to build triangles, rectangles, squares, and circles. Sing a shape song to think about the number of sides of each shape.Science: Explore water at different temperatures. How does the water feel on your hands? Does it feel cold, hot, warm, etc.?Blocks: Use Legos or blocks to build a snowman or another type of structure we can build with snow.

WednesdayDate: 1/06

Over the last couple of days we explored the water cycle and how water moves around through a special process. Today, we will begin to discuss the changing temperatures, especially our season of winter. We will begin to think about: what happens to the air when the temperature changes? What happens to water when the temperature changes? Today, we will brainstorm and create a chart jotting down what we think happens to water and the air when the temperature changes.

Art: Build a house with different shapes of different sizes.

Writing: Use magnet letters to match the letters in your name or other vocabulary words. Write down the letters you find or use.

Literacy/Library: Children will use pictures to create a collage of words that start with letter c.

Dramatic Play: Children can pretend the shovel snow and build a snowman outside. What do we need to build

a snowman?

Math: Review shapes and creating shapes with different lines. Try to make a rhombus, hexagon, octagon, and a pentagon. Use the supplied pictures and charts.Science: Close your eyes and try to find items in the water bucket. Try to describe what you find before you open your eyes.Blocks: Use blocks or Legos to create a beach and ocean. What items should we include in the ocean? Think about what happens at the beach during the winter and cold months.

ThursdayDate: 1/07

Yesterday we began to explore the changing of the temperature and its effect on the air and water. Today, we will delve deeper into what actually happens to the water and air and reflect on our chart we made yesterday. Today, we will talk about the different forms of water, such as a solid, liquid, and gas. What makes water a solid, liquid, or gas? Today, we will be experimenting with water and testing out its temperature to see if we can make it freeze or evaporate.

Art: Draw a picture of a winter activity such as ice skating, building a snowman, or drinking hot chocolate.Writing: Try to trace/write words from our unit chart (water). Trace raindrops and snowflakes and then create your own..

Literacy/Library: Children will use the letter book and music to review the special letter’s sound and words that begin with letter u.

Computer: Play a letter identification skill game.

Math: Look around the house or in the classroom for

different shapes. Look for picture frames, televisions, pots, pans, and plates. Try to label each shape you find. Dramatic Play: Children can prepare some hot chocolate for when they return inside from shoveling and playing with snow.

Blocks: Look through the books of various sources of water and try to recreate them with blocks or Legos. Can we create a tunnel or bridge to go around or under water? Use a towel paper or toilet paper roll to create a tunnel and put cars through the tunnel.

FridayDate: 1/08

Finishing off our week, we will review the water cycle and its many special parts in order for us to continue with our unit of water. We will also continue to experiment and discuss what we can do to make water freeze or evaporate. We will think about: what is something we can do at home to make water evaporate? At home, we may boil water or cook some food and watch as the water turns into smoke and starts to bead on the pots and pans. We can also watch a teapot boil and see the steam coming out. Lastly, we will explore what happens when ice is melted and exposed to warmer temperature. We will jot down some other things we may see involving water around the house. We will also learn two new words and add them to our world wall: melt and evaporate.

Art: Use ice to paint with. Freeze paint and try to use it to create a picture.Writing: Use magnet letters to match the letters in your name or other vocabulary words.

Literacy/Library: Children will choose a book and identify words that start with that letter (c). They will write it down and draw pictures besides it.

Dramatic Play: Children can make some soup to keep

us warm during the cold weather. What ingredients do we need to make soup?

Science: Explore ice cubes. How does an ice cube feel on your hand? Draw a picture of what an ice cube looks like.

Computer: Children can choose from Letter identification Game or Counting Game.Blocks: Use blocks or Legos to build a tree with snow all over it. Create a winter landscape using the pictures supplied in the center.

Math: Practice with combining shapes to create new ones. What happens when you combine two triangles or two squares? What shape do you get?
