1. Computer Global (G:) Drive _Student Submissions Find your teachers folder Open “ESR_Hurricane_Template” word document
2. Complete a “save as” following the directions in the text box at the top of the page.
3. After saving, close and open the document to make sure you saved correctly and can make changes.
4. Your teacher will help you complete the following sections: TITLE, PROBLEM, ALTERNATIVE HYPOTHESIS & NULL HYPOTHESIS
Directions to Generate Descriptive Statistics for Hurricane Andrew Data
1. Computer Global (G:) Drive _Student Submissions Find your teachers folder Open “INSERT LAST NAME_Hurricane_Data” excel file
2. Complete a “save as” inserting your name in the file name and save to your documents.
3. After saving, close and open the document to make sure you saved correctly and can make changes
GETTING THE DATA ANALYSIS TOOL
Click on the Data tab. If you do not see the Data Analysis option on the far right side, follow these directions to get it.
1. Go to File Select Options
2. Select Add-Ins
3. Select Analysis ToolPak
4. Click GO…
5. Select Analysis ToolPak6. Make sure there’s a ✓7. Click OK
8. The Data Analysis Tool should appear at the top right when the Data tab is selected
Directions to Generate Descriptive Statistics for Hurricane Andrew Data (page 2)
1. On the Data tab, click Data Analysis2. Select “Descriptive Statistics” and click OK
3. A cursor will appear in Input Range, to fill this select the values of both Pressure and Wind Speed. Click and hold on “1013” and drag a box around thenumbers on your spreadsheet.
4. Click the button Output Range and click in the text box to the right of it.
5. Now,click on any empty cell on your spreadsheet. This is where your statistic table will appear. (Choose an area to place the stats that won’t overlap your original data.)
6. Check the box for ✓Summary Statistics then click OK.
7. Make the columns larger for the Descriptive Statistics by placing your cursor between the letters of the column and left clicking & dragging the column to the right.
8. Change the text Column 1 to Air Pressure and Column 2 to Wind Speed
9. Add an appropriate overall Title: “Descriptive Statistics of Air Pressure and Wind Speed of Hurricane Andrew”
Directions for Pearson R Correlation – Statistical Analysis Test
1. On the Data tab, click Data Analysis
2. Select Correlation and click OK
3. To select the Input Range, highlight just the values of both Pressure and Wind Speed.
4. Click the box Output Range and click in the text box to the right of it.
5. Click on any empty cell on your spreadsheet. (Choose an area to place the stats that won’t overlap any other data.)
6. Change Column 1 to Air Pressure – do this in two places
7. Change Column 2 to Wind Speed – do this in two places
8. Choose a cell above your table and add an appropriate overall Title(It doesn’t matter what it looks like. We are just practicing. If you want it to look like the example however, you can merge and center cells from the Home tab under Alignment.)
9. Adjust the sizes of your cells to make the text fit.
10.The R-value of “-0.97” signifies that there is a direct correlation between the two variables.
11.Save your work.
Directions for Graphing
Making a Line Graph1. Select the columns of data under Pressure and Wind Speed include the
headings in your selections. Click on the “PRESSURE” cell and hold then drag down to the last numbers in the columns. The two columns will be highlighted.
2. Click the Insert tab at the top, then the Line Chart icon toward the top center.
Choose the 1st graph option in the second row – “Line with Markers”
3. Double Click on any of the red graph points to pop up the Format Data Series window.
4. Select the button that says Secondary Axis. Click on the ‘X’ to close the pop up. Your wind speed values should now appear on the other side of your graph.
5. Keep the whole graph selected then right click and select the select data option.
6. Click the “Edit” button on the right
7. Axis Labels Range box appears
8. On the spreadsheet, click and drag down the column over the dates and times starting from 21-3 to 26-21. Once the data is highlighted hit OK on the range box.
9. Another box appears, click OK again. The dates should appear on the x-axis of your graph.
10. Add a Chart Title by clicking on the text box over your graph: “The Correlation of Air Pressure & Wind Speed of Hurricane Andrew”
11. Under the Chart Tools tab at the top, select Design. Then select Add Chart Element
12. Scroll down to Axis Titles and add “Primary Horizontal”, “Primary Vertical” and “Secondary Vertical”. Fill in the text boxes that appear with the appropriate axis title. (An example of the graph is on the back of this sheet.)
