Walk-in registration will be accepted starting January 27, 2020 at 9:00 a.m., please keep in mind some classes may be filled by this time. You are not enrolled until you receive an approved confirmation from the Adult Education Office.

No Refunds/Credits will be issued after February 17, 2020, under any circumstance including non-attendance and medical emergencies.

REGISTRATION Registering early helps secure your place in the course and ensures classes will not be canceled due to lack of enrollment. Board of Education reserves the right to cancel sessions for special circumstances, or change the venue when necessary. Classes with low enrollment may be shortened rather than canceled (with no price reduction). Mail-in registration will be ONLY be accepted and begins immediately upon receipt of this brochure. Walk-in registration will be accepted starting January 27, 2020 at 9:00 a.m., please keep in mind some classes may be filled by this time.

PAYMENT Pay by check or money order only, payable to BMCHSD Adult Education. Make a separate check or money order for each course. Fees are listed with the course descriptions. There are no discounts. Mail Registration Forms to BMCHSD Adult Education, 1260 Meadowbrook Road, North Merrick, NY 11566. Include a stamped, self-addressed envelope with each registration.

ELIGIBILITY OPEN TO ADULTS (must be 18 years or older).

NON – RESIDENTS Those living outside the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District must include a $5.00 non-resident fee for each class. Non-residents will be accepted into a class providing maximum enrollment has not been reached by the 3rd week before classes begin, residents will take precedence up until the 3rd week before classes start.

MATERIAL FEE Material fees are paid in cash to the instructor on the first night of class.

REFUNDS/CREDITS Refunds/Credits will be granted before February 17, 2020. A $5.00 processing fee will be deducted from the refund. Full refunds will be granted only when the Adult Education Office cancels a course. REFUNDS ARE PROCESSED AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THE REFUND POLICY.

CANCELATIONS A class session may not be able to meet due to school activities or unforeseen events. There will be no reduction in price if a session cannot be rescheduled. Classes will not meet when Bellmore-Merrick CHSD schools are closed due to inclement weather, school holidays, etc.Evening classes will be canceled only when after school activities are canceled. DELAYED SCHOOL OPENING

Delayed school openings affect Bellmore-Merrick Middle School and High School students only. Adult Education classes will run on a regular schedule.

FACULTY Persons qualified by training and experience are secured to teach the courses offered. Interested, qualified instructors are invited to file their credentials with the BMCHSD Adult Continuing Education Office.

EVENING COURSESArts & Crafts

1. ART OF DRAWING This course will review the fundamentals of drawing and allow students to learn different techniques to help transform their imagination into a beautiful piece of art. We will focus on the elements and guidelines to create projects such as portraits, landscapes, figures and still life. Students will learn a variety of mediums including graphite, color pencil, pastel, charcoal and pen & ink. All levels of drawing experience are welcome including beginners! Personal attention is given to each student. Bring a 2B graphite drawing pencil, a kneaded eraser, blending tortillon and drawing pad (11x14 recommended) to the first class. 2. CROCHET BeginnerIf you have never crocheted, or have not done it in a while and want to brush up on some of the things you have forgotten, come join us. Learn the stitches needed to make a fashionable scarf, granny squares, baby blanket, poncho, or whatever you choose. Most importantly, you will learn to read instructions. Bring a pattern of something you wish to make and let’s have some fun! Materials: Susan Bates Crochet Hook Size G or H and light colored worsted weight yarn. 3. MOSAICS & DECOUPAGE Beginner and IntermediateMosaics offer endless possibilities of what can be achieved by meshing different types of material into a beautiful art form. In this class you will learn the basic applications of mosaic art. You will learn how to properly cut and nip tile, apply adhesive and grout to make a finished product. There are different beginner projects to choose from. More advanced students may challenge themselves with endless possibilities, including wall hangings, frames, small tabletops, trays, trivets etc. MOD PODGE is an all-in-one glue, sealer, and finish that is used to attach paper and fabric to various surfaces. 4. PAINTING WITH ACRYLICThis class is for beginners or those with some painting experience. You will learn how to use brushes and mix primary colors. Your instructor will guide participants from basic sketch to final composition, encouraging individual style. The designs are for all skill levels. This class is fun, relaxing and easy! 5. PAINTING IN COLORED PENCILColored pencil is flourishing as a Fine Art medium! It offers rich colors, non-toxic wet-or-dry convenience, easy control, portability, and gorgeous results. We will explore the remarkable range and potential of colored pencil techniques. This workshop will begin with a brief warm up session to practice strokes and techniques and then begin the still life project provided by the instructor. The finished project size will be 8 x 10 with margins. Color pencil experience recommended. There will be individual instruction and critiques. 6. QUILTING – BeginnerJoin us to make this easy baby or lap quilt, all out of cotton fabrics of your choice. The finished size of the baby quilt is 33 x 40 inches. All quilters can join this class. 7. QUILTING INTERMEDIATEJoin us in making three interesting quilted items. For the first quilt we will be making a sunburst wall hanging. The second quilt will be a throw using squares and it will be sewn diagonally with lattice strips. The third quilt will be a throw or a larger quilt using hexagons and a nine-patch pattern. Students must bring their own sewing machines to class. Contact the Adult Education Office for a list of materials.
