Tri-County High SchoolEMERGENCY ACTION PLAN FOR ATHLETICS

Tri-County High School has a written emergency plan that is to be followed in the event of a medical emergency. All coaches should be familiar with the document and their roles and responsibilities in an emergency. Any questions should be directed to the athletic trainer (AT) or school administrator in the absence of an AT.

An emergency is the need for emergency medical services (EMS) to give further medical attention and/or transport an athlete to the hospital. It is important in these situations that coordination between the AT, coaches, and administrators be effective. This guide is intended to delineate roles and outline the protocol to be followed should an emergency occur. Situations when 911 should be called are:

Athlete is not breathing Athlete has lost consciousness It is suspected that an athlete may have a neck or back injury Athlete has an open fracture (bone exposed) or other gross deformity Suspected exertional heat stroke Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) Severe bleeding that cannot be stopped

The highest person in the chain of command who is present at a scene will be the designated person in charge, or leader. That person is responsible for deciding whether or not to call 911, instructing the others how they may help, and will be the person who stays with the athlete until EMS arrives.

Once it has been decided that EMS should be called, the following protocol is to be followed:

1. The highest person on the chain of command will be deemed the leader, and will stay with the athlete to monitor the athlete’s condition and administer necessary first aid. If possible, someone else on the chain of command should also stay and assist. The front office or an administrator should be notified that there is an emergency situation on campus.

2. The highest person on the chain of command will make the call to EMS or will designate another person to make the call. (911 from a cell phone. Dial 9-911 if from a school phone) EMS should be told:

a. What the emergency isb. The condition of the athletec. How to get to where the athlete isAlso, tell EMS that someone will meet them at the entrance to aid in directing the ambulance. DO NOT HANG UP UNTIL EMS HANGS UP FIRST.

3. When a call needs to be made, please use a cell phone or the phone located in room 111. (Mr. Pieper)

4. The leader will send a runner to the specific entrance to direct the ambulance to the athlete.5. The leader will designate another person to attempt contact with the athlete’s parents.

Emergency contact information can be found with the coaches. If a parent is not present, the form and a coach should accompany the athlete to the hospital.

6. If transport is deemed necessary by EMS, athlete will be taken to the Ascension St. Michael’s Hospital, 900 Illinois Avenue, Stevens Point, WI, unless the parent requests otherwise.

Lightning SafetyIt is WIAA policy that play is suspended when lightning is seen OR thunder is heard. Lightning can strike 10 to 15 miles from a storm. Coaches may monitor lightning strikes with smartphone applications such as WeatherBug. They must move practice inside when there has been a strike 10 miles or closer within the past 30 minutes. Practice may not return outdoors until the nearest lightning strike within 30 minutes was at least 10 miles away. During competitions, officials are responsible for lightning safety.

AnaphylaxisIf an athlete with or without known allergies displays symptoms of anaphylaxis, including trouble breathing, hives or swelling, tightness of the throat, and hoarse voice, the emergency action plan is to be activated and an epi-pen is to be administered. Be sure to document the time it was administered and send it with the athlete in the ambulance. Epi-pens are found with the athletic trainer and on the right wall of the phy. ed. storage rooms in the high school and middle school gyms.

Dental InjuriesPrompt action is necessary when a tooth is avulsed (knocked out). It should be replanted within 5 minutes for optimal healing. Locate the tooth and rinse off any debris with cold water for no more than 10 seconds. Do not touch the root or submerge the tooth. If it cannot be replanted, it may be placed in a ToothSaver found in the athletic training facility, in cold milk, or held between the athlete’s lower gums and lip. He or she should then be immediately referred to his or her dentist. Do not place the tooth in dry gauze or paper towel.

Exertional Heat IllnessCoaches must be familiar with the three stages of exertional heat illness and how to manage each. The AT has a written addendum to the emergency action plan specific to these situations. Ascension ATs practice rectal thermometry and ice water immersion for suspected victims of exertional heat stroke. It is important for coaches to know that these situations are like any other emergency and will require them to know their roles. Please refer to the WIAA website for further heat information.
