Lesson Plan 5 Grade Level: Third Unit/Subject: Cursive Handwriting Lesson title: Learning cursive writing and lowercase letters – Part 4 Learning Standards: 3L5b: Use words for identification and description, making connections between words and their use. Pre-requisite Skills: Knowledge the four basic curves of cursive letter writing. Undercurve, downcurve, overcurve, slant Students are able to write lowercase letters, i, t, u, w, e, l, b, h, f, k, r, s, j, p, a, d, g, o, c, q, n, in cursive. Learning Targets: Students will be able to write the lowercase letters; m, y, x, v, z. Students will be able to recognize the letters m, y, x, v, z. in cursive. Students will be able to practice joining of cursive letters. Assessment Strategies: Students are assessed on individual effort. Teacher will assess student learning on the progress of what students have completed in their writing workbooks. Teacher will qualify student achievement of the targeted skills. Students will assess their work in their writing portfolio throughout the year.

Learning Standards:

Pre-requisite Skills:

Knowledge the four basic curves of cursive letter writing. Undercurve, downcurve, overcurve, slant

Students are able to write lowercase letters, i, t, u, w, e, l, b, h, f, k, r, s, j, p, a, d, g, o, c, q, n, in cursive.

Learning Targets:

Students will be able to write the lowercase letters; m, y, x, v, z.

Students will be able to recognize the letters m, y, x, v, z. in cursive.

Students will be able to practice joining of cursive letters.

Assessment Strategies:

Students are assessed on individual effort.

Teacher will assess student learning on the progress of what students have completed in their writing workbooks.

Teacher will qualify student achievement of the targeted skills.

Students will assess their work in their writing portfolio throughout the year.

Anticipatory set:

Students will describe what they know about different animals in the zoo. Students will write the names of their top five favorite animals in manuscript.

Teacher will explain to students to put the paper they just wrote their five favorite animals on aside for later in the lesson.

Lined writing paper Pencil Writing workbooks White board & marker

Sequence of Instruction:

Teacher will introduce lowercase cursive letters, m, y, x, v, z.

Teacher will write the letters on the board for the students to see.

Students will practice writing each letter on lined writing paper.

TASK: Follow task guidelines for letters m, and y, x, v, z, as well.

For letter m: Teacher will ask students how many slant strokes are in the letter m?For letter y: Teacher will ask students how many overcurves are in the letter y?For letter x: Teacher will ask students if they can identify the two slants in the letter x?For letter v: Teacher will ask students what strokes are in the letter v?For letter z: Teacher will ask students what stroke follows the first slant in the letter z?

Teacher will demonstrate writing the letter m, y, x, v, z, on the board while saying the stroke description. (One at a time)Students will practice writing the letter m, y, x, v, z, on their lined writing paper. (One at time)

Students will complete the first part of each of their workbook worksheets, just practicing the letters. When students complete this task, they will refer back to the list of five animals they wrote in manuscript.

Students will then write the names of their five favorite animals in cursive, this will go in the students writing portfolio.

Closure:

Students will complete their workbook pages for homework.
