Page 2 EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOSTNotes About

Returning to Sanctuary Worship Worshiping indoors in the Sanctuary safely calls for careful consideration of a number of factors: Masking. In light of recent CDC recommendations, we are requesting all worshipers to remain masked while in the sanctuary, as well as when moving through the building. Some in our church family, including young children, are not yet vaccinated or cannot receive the vaccine. Ventilation. The HVAC system will not be operated while people are in the sanctuary, to minimize aerosol dispersion. This means no ceiling fans. We can cool the space before people arrive and will ventilate the space after people leave. Attendance Register. Because CDC requires facilities to notify all attendees of any subsequent report of COVID-19 infection, attendance will be registered. A greeter will check off names as worshipers enter and will obtain contact information for visitors. Sanitation. Good housekeeping standards will be maintained. High-touch surfaces, such as railings, switches, and knobs, will be sanitized before use. Hymnals and pew Bibles can be used without a lot of concern; wipes will be available. Hand-held objects, such as offering plates, will not be passed around. Singing. The mechanics of vocalization substantially increase the dispersion of aerosol droplets. Session has decided for now that worshipers will not sing. Song leaders will be well-distanced from the nearest worshiper. Spacing. Household units may sit close together. As long as practicable, we will request 6 feet of spacing between household units. Movement within the sanctuary will be minimized. Communion. The worship committee has some decisions to make around handling the elements during the Lord’s Supper. One option is for worshipers to bring their own elements. Another option is pre-packaged communion cups. Without question we will abandon the practice of intinction in a common cup. Virtual link. Zoom is here to stay. Worship will be live-streamed so that people can see and hear the service from wherever they are. A monitor facing the congregation will display the “Gallery” of worshipers online. Audio File. A full-fidelity digital audio recording of the entire service will be posted on the church website later on Sunday. Vaccination. We will not require proof of vaccination for entry into the Sanctuary. However, as Governor Carney reiterated, “The COVID-19

Invocation Pastor JerryCall to Worship Psalm 89

L: God has anointed the servants and set apart the meek to inherit the earth.

C: God’s hand shall always remain with us. God will protect us from the wicked, from those who seek to do us harm.

L: Hear the words of the Creator, “My steadfast love shall be with you! I will preserve you on the sea and on the rivers.”

C: Let us cry aloud, “You are my God, and the Rock of my salvation!”

L: Though we may stray, God will not take away this shelter of steadfast love. God’s covenant of peace endures forever!

Opening Hymn Hymn #623“The Church of Christ in Every Age,” vss. 1, 2, 3, & 4

1. The church of Christ in every age, beset by change but Spirit led, must claim and test its heritage and keep on rising from the dead.

2. Across the world, across the street, the victims of injustice cry for shelter and for bread to eat, and never live until they die.

3. Then let the servant church arise, a caring church that longs to be

a partner in Christ’s sacrifice, and clothed in Christ’s humanity.

4. For Christ alone, whose blood was shed, can cure the fever in our blood, and teach us how to share our bread and feed the starving multitude.

Faith Sharing with Children Pastor JerrySheep without a Shepherd

Some people say that all sheep look alike. But studies show that sheep are able to remember the distinct faces of 50 other sheep. They also remember who is their leader and will follow that sheep or person anywhere. Likewise, shepherds know the difference between sheep, and between their own flock and everyone else’s. Every sheep is important to a shepherd. For this reason Jesus compared himself to a shepherd, and to us, his followers, as sheep. Sheep need someone to lead them. So Jesus went from village to village, helping and saving one person at a time. Pray after me: Dear God . . . We honor Jesus as the good shepherd . . . Help us to be like Jesus . . . and watch over every person in Jesus’ flock . . . Amen.

Call to Confession Pastor JerryOur gracious God watches over us and provides for us with unending mercy, patience, and kindness so that when we repent, we find ourselves forgiven. Let us confess our sins.

Prayer of Confession (Unison) Holy, triune God, we confess that we have not lived for your glory. You claim us as your beloved

flock, but we do not honor your guidance. You call us to paths of decency, but we fail to follow your way. Forgive us, God of grace. Break down the walls that divide us from you and from one another, and build us up into a strong foundation for your reign. Silent prayer or meditation.

Assurance of Pardon Stand firm in your faith, covered by the saving grace of God and ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Musical Response “Break Now the Bread of Life,” v. 1 Hymn

#665Break now the bread of life, dear Lord, to me, as once you broke the loaves beside the sea. Beyond the sacred page I seek you, Lord. My spirit longs for you, O living Word.

Prayer for Illumination Gospel Lesson

Mark 6: 30-44, 53-56 NRSV

30 The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught.

31 He said to them, “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.

32 And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves.

July 18, 2021 Page 733 Now many saw them going and recognized them,

and they hurried there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them.

34 As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.

35 When it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now very late;

36 send them away so that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy something for themselves to eat.”

37 But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” They said to him, “Are we to go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread, and give it to them to eat?”

38 And he said to them, “How many loaves have you? Go and see.” When they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.”

39 Then he ordered them to get all the people to sit down in groups on the green grass.

40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties.

41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and he divided the two fish among them all.

42 And all ate and were filled; 43 and they took up twelve baskets

full of broken pieces and of the fish.

Page 8 EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST44 Those who had eaten the loaves

numbered five thousand men.53 When they had crossed [back] over,

they came to land at Gennesaret and moored the boat.

54 When they got out of the boat, people at once recognized him,

55 and rushed about that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was.

56 And wherever he went, into villages or cities or farms, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak; and all who touched it were healed.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! Sermon “Our Daily Bread” Pastor JerryAffirmation of Faith

Adapted from the Confession of 1967, 9.22–24The New Life in Christ

The new life takes shape in a community in which people know that God loves and accepts them

in spite of what they are. They therefore accept themselves and love others, knowing that no one has any ground on which to stand, except God’s grace. The new life does not release people from conflict with unbelief, pride, lust, and fear. They still have to struggle with disheartening difficulties

and problems. Nevertheless, as they mature in love and faithfulness in their life with Christ, they live in freedom and good cheer, bearing witness on good days and evil days, confident that the new life is pleasing to God and helpful to others. The new life finds its direction in the life of Jesus, his deeds and words, his struggles against temptation, his compassion, his anger, and his willingness to suffer death. The teaching of apostles and prophets guides men and women in living this life, and the Christian community nurtures and equips them for their ministries. Amen.

Joys and Concerns Prayers of the People and the Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed by thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
