Understanding the World Floating and Sinking Pirate Pete needs your help! He wants to build a pirate ship but doesn’t know which material would be the best to use. Collect a range of objects from around your home. Test the objects to see what happens when you place them in water. Do they float or sink? Don’t forget to test out your completed Pirate ship! See below for a chart to record your results. Communication & Language/UW Grown ups. Set up a treasure hunt in your indoor or outdoor space by providing a set of pictorial clues. You could even make these together by getting the children to pick certain objects and draw them. As the children go to each place in the pictures they can hunt for each clue. Prompt them to use positional language to explain where they need to go. Hide some treasure in the last place. This could be a special snack, a new story to read or something special for your family. Understanding of the World Imagine you are a pirate searching for the treasure. Create your own treasure map based on where you live. This could be your back garden or even your route to school Try to include as many features as you can. Don’t forget to put an x to mark the spot! You could tea stain your map to make it look more authentic! Literacy – WritingWrite a postcard as if you are a pirate off on your travels. You can use simple sentences

such as - ‘I am in my boat/ship’, I am looking for the X’ etc.

Use your sound mats to help make your spelling more accurate.

sounds attached below. Cut our or write the sounds on a piece of card or paper and then dot around either inside or outside. Ask your grown up to say a word using one of these sounds. E.g

rain – you then need to jump on the correct sound. Continue with different words and

sounds.

Maths-Pattern Take a kitchen roll (or toilet roll) to use as a Pirate telescope. Alternatively use paper or

card, possibly from a cereal box, and roll up to make a tube. Talk about how to make patterns looking at colour and shape. This could be with paints or with tape you have around the house.

Challenge- Can you use 3 colours to make your repeating pattern?

Fold your paper /card / fabric down the middle – draw a faint pencil line to help you. If you put a square on one side, you have to do it on the other! Have fun and see who rises to the super
