Pfeiffer Intermediate SchoolIntroductionThis business plan, Travel the World, is intended to enable intermediate school students to learn about world cultures without leaving Perry Township. The plan was written by nineteen 5th grade students in fall 2015, with the assistance of Pfeiffer Language Arts and Social Studies Teacher, Ellen Casey, and Perry Business Instructor, April Warstler.

SummaryWe put Travel the World together to enable students at Pfeiffer to learn about different cultures in a fun and entertaining way. We will host profitable cultural events featuring various foreign countries. The opportunity to explore different cultures in ways that appeal to intermediate students will attract large crowds. Not only will Pfeiffer benefit from this business venture, but so will its students as they become more knowledgeable and tolerant of individual differences.

Mission & StrategiesOur mission is to give people knowledge about other countries. Our objective is to encourage people to experience what aspects of these countries are like. Our strategy is to start a business that offers cultural events. Our goal is to open a business in September of 2016, with a Japanese event and host a cultural event each month through May 2016, attended by 300 customers a month.

Service OfferingOur plan is to create events in our own school that teach kids about different cultures from around the world. At the first six events, kids will learn about France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico and India. At each event there will be dances, games, food, and crafts from the featured country. There is not another way for kids to experience so many countries’ cultures so easily. Having cultural events will be more enjoyable than reading about countries at the library because it is a hands-on experience and people will have an opportunity to try foods they may not have tried before.

Profile of Target MarketThe target market of Travel The World is the 860 10-12 year old male and female Pfeiffer students along with their parents, whose median age is 40-42. 94.9% of Perry township residents are white, so many people may not have experienced world cultures. Kids who come from households whose average income is around $49,000 will be able to afford to participate in all events. Our competition is athletic practices and games that kids attend after school for the teams they participate on.

Marketing Strategies & Sales ProjectionsTravel the World will market its services through posters, flyers, and announcements at Pfeiffer. It will also be announced through the Pfeiffer page of “The Perryite” which is received by every resident in Perry Township. Both students and parents will be made aware of the cultural events through this combination of advertisements. $5400 in sales will be earned the first year of the business’s operation. Travel the World will host its cultural events on Friday evenings once a

month – an evening off from non-school sponsored sports teams for many intermediate age students. We will also schedule the events so that they do not conflict with other district wide home sporting events. The total cost to operate the business the first year is $1800. The cost will be kept low the first year with the assistance of Perry Foreign Language clubs who will supplement additional costs above the business’s monthly budget in order to have the opportunity to promote foreign language studies available at the high school.

Management & AdministrationMrs. Casey and Mrs. Warstler will be responsible for reserving space, requesting facility set-up, coordinating with foreign language clubs at the high school, soliciting donations from vendors, purchasing supplies, and depositing money. The following students will assist with advertising and hosting each event, while having the opportunity to be project leaders of one of the first six events.

Financial ProjectionsThe following table indicates monthly income.

Three hundred tickets will be sold each month, for nine months, at $2 per ticket. The monthly budget for each event is $200. An example of cost detail for the first event is provided in the table below.

Origami Paper (1000 pieces) Amazon 8.99 1 $8.99The estimated cost of the first event is $310, higher than the business’s budget. Travel the World will stay within its budget by soliciting donations of Japanese food from local vendors in exchange for recognition as event sponsors. In addition the Perry High School Japanese Club will pay costs over $200 and attend the event in order to promote Japanese language studies at the high school. The estimate of cost above represents the minimum supplies required to host the event. It is anticipated that between donations and volunteerism, Travel the World will be able to offer more varieties of food and activities than represented in the table.

Funding ProposalThe amount of money needed to start this business is $500. This will ensure the business has enough to host its first event even if it incurs unexpected expenses. Profit from the first event will be reinvested in the business to host the second event. This business plan is requesting $500 from the Massillon Area Chamber of Commerce to start Travel the World. The return on investment for the first year of business is estimated in the table below.

Grant $500

Revenue $600 for 9 events $5400

Total annual income $5900

Cost of goods sold $200 for 9 events $1800

Annual profit $4100

ImplementationSome major decisions will be where in the school the events will take place, and how we will set up the different activities for large crowds. Another decision is what countries we would explore next, each time we do an event. Since we are expecting large crowds, we need to decide how we are going to sell the tickets – in advance, at the door, or a combination of both.

ConclusionTravel the World should be invested in because it will be profitable. The business will succeed because intermediate age students have an interest in learning about other cultures, trying new foods, playing games, doing crafts, and dancing. It will also succeed because there is not another way to learn about so many other countries by having fun at such a convenient location for such a reasonable price. Finally, Travel the World benefits society by making it fun for students to learn about and appreciate differences among people and cultures.
