Reading Tasks

Access BugClub online using your login and complete the activities below. Please contact us at [email protected] if you are struggling to access BugClub. These books are all set according to your child’s reading level are will provide access to a wider range or stories at home. Please listen to your child read little and often, daily if possible.

1. Retell the story in as much detail as you can after you have read it. Explain whether you like the story or not giving examples from the text to explain your feelings.

2. Ask 3 questions to an adult or sibling listening to you read to check they are listening carefully. Make sure you know the answers too!

3. Describe a character using 3 words to a sibling or adult. Can they use your clues to guess the character?

Performance Poetry – Watch Michael Rosen’s preform his story We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytc0U2WAz4s Practise preforming this story with Michael Rosen using actions and lots of expression. You could even challenge yourself to learn it so well that by the end of the week you could perform the story to family members with or without the video.

Don’t forget to also read your own books for pleasure throughout the day. I know many of you enjoy reading or listening to a book at bedtime.

Spellings

Attached in the worksheet section below is a list of words called common exception words that Year 1 children are expected to be able to read and spell by the end of the year. These words are often referred to as tricky words as they do not always follow phonetic rules. Please choose 5 words your child cannot yet spell and practise these over the week. Practising these words could be done in many different ways. Some ideas could be, writing these words in different colours and styles, writing these words in sentences or writing these words in different materials e.g. shaving foam, water on a wall or sand.

We understand all children will be at different stages in their learning. If your child is a confident speller and knows all Year 1 common exception words you may like to choose some words from the Year 2 list.

Science

Forces – Design a boat

Use plasticine, playdough or kitchen foil to investigate how the shape of a boat affects the amount of mass it can hold.

Create at least 3 boats with different shaped hulls. Try floating these boats and working scientifically to find out how much cargo they can hold. How could you make sure you make the weight of the cargo fair for each boat? Put your boats in order of how much cargo they can hold without sinking. Why do you think some of your boats can hold more or less cargo than the rest?

Page 3:   · Web view*On My Opinions (sheet provided below), write a full, punctuated sentence in your best handwriting giving a reason you liked . The Chinese Zodiac Story. *In your sentence,

Science knowledge (to discuss after the investigation when thinking about why some boats held more cargo than others) - Water pushes upwards with a force called ‘upthrust’. (You can feel this if you try to push a light object such as a balloon under water). The shape of a ‘boat’ affects the weight (passengers/cargo) it can hold. The more water that the boat displaces (often the bigger the bottom) the more upthurst and therefore the more weight it can take.

Challenge – Using your new knowledge, can you make 1 more boat that will hold more cargo than the rest? Good luck!

Foundation Subjects

1. RE

During half term, 23rd- 24th May, millions of Muslims around the world, including some families from our Year 2 friends, finished their month of fasting (Ramadan) and celebrated the festival of Eid al-Fitr.

This week’s activities will depend on how much you already know about Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr. We know some of you will already be experts and would like to ask you to share your knowledge with others. This could take the form of a videoed news report, poster or writing about your experience celebrating Eid. It would be lovely to see or hear about some of the celebrations you may have had at home and how these have been different this year due to lockdown.

For others, you may have heard of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr or this may all be new learning for you. Below are some links that include a videos, written information and quizzes about what Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr is and what it means to Muslims.

You may like to take your learning one step further and have a go at making some onion pakoras. These are made by many Muslims as part of the celebrations for Eid al-Fitr. A simple recipe is attached in the worksheet section below.

2. Art

Create water paintings outside on walls or hard floors (weather permitting). Be creative. Will your painting be big or small? How detailed can you make it? Can you finish your design before all the water evaporates? How does the weather effect how fast or slow your painting disappears? Why do you think this is?

3. Music

Use different materials from around your home to make some different musical instruments. You could make shakers, drums or stringed instruments (using elastic bands or string). Get creative. You could even use your instruments to make some noise during the clap for the NHS/carers/keyworkers on Thursday.
