Topics – Money

P113 Operation Maths

P114 Operation Maths

We have looked at coins and money a number of times during senior infants in class. It takes some practice to count coins so if children are finding these activities difficult, don`t worry. Help your child become familiar with the coins and their values. The topic will be explored further during first class.

Instructions for maths

P110 Have a look at some coins 1c,2c,5c,10c, and 20c. Describe the coins to someone who is working with you and tell them which one is worth the most, and which is worth the least.

Part B – Look at the Panda – how much does it cost? That`s right, 8c. How many of our 1c coins will we use to pay 8c. yes 8, let`s trace 8 of the 1c coins and colour them. Do the same for each other item.

P111

Part A When we add money, we always start with the biggest value coin. We count the 5c coins in 5s and then each 2c coin get 2count ons and 1c gets one count. Look at the first wallet. We start with the 5c coin, add the 2c coin and then the 1c coin. So 5c, 6,7c (adding the 2c) and 8c(adding

Page 7: bgnsblog.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewMessage to Senior Infants: Hi everyone, Please find this week`s work below. We would ask you each to choose one piece of work from this week

the 1c). So 8c is our total. Write into the box, now do similar counting with the other wallets.

Part B Each piggy bank needs 10c. Look at our coins, how can we make up 10c. Find 4 different ways to make up 10c. (It may be useful to have a selection of the coins mentioned on p110 for this.

P112

Spend some time looking at and discussing the items in the toy shop and their prices. Discuss what coins you would use to buy each item. Now look at the first box. This child bought a pack of bubbles and a train. Let`s look at the prices. The bubbles cost 2c, write 2c in the box under the bubbles. Now, what about the train? The train is 5c, write 5c in the box under the train. So Tom spent 2c + 5c. We start with the bigger value, 5c and add 2c so 5c,6,7c.

2c + 5c = 7c Tom spent 7c

Now check what Lily and the other children spent at the shop.

P113

Part A. This page refers back to p112. Tom spent 7c, so we need to show his 7c in his purse. What coins make up 7c? Yes, a 5c and a 2c. Now see can you work out what coins Lily had in her purse and draw them in? Continue for the other purses.

Part B

Page 8: bgnsblog.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewMessage to Senior Infants: Hi everyone, Please find this week`s work below. We would ask you each to choose one piece of work from this week

In part B, we need to count the money. In the first row, there are two 5c coins. So 5 and 5 makes 10c. We circle the number 10 on the numberline. Now work out the coins in row 2,3 and 4.

P114

Roll 2 dice (or one twice). Draw the dots and work out the total number. Draw coins in the purse to total that number.

Farm SafetyThis is a topic which is important for children, especially those who live in a rural area to explore and learn about each year. Some of the information on the given websites, especially if you come across videos, while educational, can be a little frightening for children in infants and it is important to become familiar yourself with the content and choose what you feel is suitable for your child. Your child should not work through this topic independently, they will need a parent/guardian working with them.

On AgriAware website, scroll down to Resources - Junior and Senior Infants

Lesson plans, discussion sheets, puzzles and activities. These are age appropriate and there is an app you can download on a tablet if interested.

If you would like some further resources to help you discuss the topic with your child

HAS website has the following downloadable booklet– “Only a giant can lift a bull”. It has a collection of stories with a farm safety message and while some are more suited to older classes, there are

Page 12: bgnsblog.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewMessage to Senior Infants: Hi everyone, Please find this week`s work below. We would ask you each to choose one piece of work from this week

some you could read with your child. On this website there is also a pdf presentation which is quite child friendly called “Primary school presentation – Stay safe on the Farm”

We have been working our way through the list of tricky words this year. If you’re your child knows all of these words they can start learning the Dolch words (some children will already have Dolch words in their hardback copies).Tricky words
