I.) Lab Design You are going to be doing an experiment to determine what material an unknown metal is made of based on its specific heat. In order to do the lab, you need to design a few things first……..

1.) Read the procedure and determine what materials you will need to complete this experiment. There is space below the procedure to list your materials

Procedure

1.) Put on safety goggles.2.) Obtain group materials.3.) Measure the total mass (m) of the loop of steel washers and record in data table.4.) Measure about 100mL (record your EXACT amount in the data table) of tap water into the Styrofoam cup.5.) Measure the initial temperature of the water in the cup (wait about one minute) and record in data table. 6.) Place the steel washers into the boiling water bath and be sure to keep the string on the outside so that

you can lift it back out.7.) Measure the temperature of the boiling water (wait about one minute) and record in data table.8.) Pull the steel washers out of the bath and IMMEDIATELY place them into the Styrofoam cup of tap water.9.) Watch and record the temperature of the water in the Styrofoam cup every 10 seconds until the

maximum temperature is reached. Record the final (maximum) temp. in the data table.10.) Perform calculations and confirm that your sample is steel by comparing your computed
