Term 2, Week 1Parent Note

In this pack you will find learning activities that your child will need to do every day and ones that can be done over the week. We encourage that all activities in this pack are completed by the end of week one to the best of your child’s ability.

We understand that you are probably needing to juggle more than one child, internet/device demands, work obligations and life! Setting yourself a family timetable allocating particular times for learning activities, wellbeing tasks and fun stuff may be helpful. This does not need to reflect the 9am – 3pm timetable of a classroom. Instead it can be spread out through the day in order to make in more manageable. For example we have asked students to read at least 20 minutes each day, this could be 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes before going to bed. Be creative!

We have provided a time frame guide for each of the activities. This is just a guide. Your child may complete the task in less time or may need a bit more time. We do ask that you do not exceed the suggested time frame by much. It’s ok to stop the activity even if your child has not completed it. Remember if you or your child is getting overwhelmed please take a break and come back at another time. Our best efforts and work happen when we our brain is calm!

Please remember you can email any of the classroom teachers for help and support. We are all in this together!!

To help you navigate the learning activities you will find they are marked with the following symbols:

A task that needs you to read something📌 Parents please note You will need a device for this👥 Discuss with an adult💬 Talk about it A writing activity🙂 Here is some help👀 Let’s look up something Cut and paste activity Hands on activity – may require materials from home Worksheet found in resource pack Social interaction required💭 Think about it

MULTIPLICATION BY REPEATED ADDITION

Learning the concept of repeated addition is how we make the link into Multiplication. The symbol for multiply is X

Repeated addition is when we add the same number several times.

2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10We can also represent this sum another way by saying there are 5 groups of 2 stars. The way we represent this is 5 X 2 = 10

Bill

Instead of using repeated addition to calculate our answer we can also represent this sum another way. We can represent this sum by writing 3 groups of 4 or 3 x 4 which equals 12.

Now its your turn!

Below is a group of MAB’s that we use at school. It is your job to complete the repeated addition sum and also the multiplication equation. Count each individual block if you need to.

Instead of using repeated addition to calculate our answer we can also represent this sum another way. We can represent this sum by writing 3 groups of 4 or 3 x 4 which equals 12.

ScienceYear 3 Lesson 1

Watch YouTube video: Year 3 Week 1 Science https://youtu.be/Ry4e6bZj-1MObservable features are something that can be seen with your eyes. If you are observing something usually, you are looking at it or watching closely. If you cannot see something, it is NOT observable. This may be something like such as the equator, which is the imaginary line that runs through the Earth. Although when we look at a globe, we cannot see cities, parks or skyscrapers these would be not observable. Sort these features into observable or non-observable for a world globe.

Observable Features Not observable

Go outside or look out the window and write down 10 things you can observe!

HASSAustralia and its Neighbours – Lesson 1

Australia, one of the Oceania countries is located between the South Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean.

Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere of our world. The land covers a total of 7, 741, 220 sq. km of area, making it the sixth largest countries of

the world. (Dec 20, 2018) Australia is an island continent. Australia does not share land borders with any countries. We have 3 oceans surrounding our country

o Indian Ocean is on the left along the coast of Western Australiao Southern Ocean is at the bottom or our country o Pacific Ocean is to the right of our country of the coast of Queensland, New South

Wales and Victoria.

We have given you a black and white map of Australia with a list of 11 neighbouring countries. Your task is to locate and label each of the countries listed in the box. You may

use Google Maps on your iPad, an atlas, or the coloured map provided in this pack. Colour the map when you are finished

labelling the countries.

Digital TechnologyData – What is it?Data is information. Data can be numbers, words or pictures. Many different people use data in some way. _______________________________________________________Teachers use and collect data about you when then track how well you understand or apply skills you covered in class. Your dentist collects data, such as when you last had a check-up and whether your teeth were healthy or need more work. If you were planning a party, you might collect data on your friends - what they like to eat and drink. This is Mike. Here is the data I have collected about him.His birthday is on the 9th of September.

His Lucky number is 3.He loves skateboarding. What are the questions I could have asked to get this information?_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________The tuckshop collects data to find out the students’ preferences. For example they might ask which ice-cream students’ like the best so they can order in and sell more ice-cream.

Circle the question that will give the tuckshop the data to sell more.- Do you prefer chocolate or strawberry flavoured ice-cream?- Do you like ice-cream?

Tell someone why this is the best question to ask? While ‘Learning from Home’ my family were discussing downtime activities – I asked them “What is your preferred downtime activity?” This is the list we came up with.We needed to discuss the suitability of these tasks in our present ‘Learn from Home’ situation. For instance the tasks need to be able to be done at home in a half hour to an hour break, with limited/easy to get equipment. Which of these activities do not fit the criteria/are not suitable? Write a new question for me to ask my family…________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Your turn… Ask your family the question you have written above, create a list of options that meet the criteria. Survey family members with the final list – everyone gets 2 different votes. How could you collect the data so that everyone gets a fair say?

I know this is a little different from the Movie Trailer and Answer Garden tasks we were covering in class; I remind you of the message we started many of classes with …So in the future weeks we will be looking at data recorded and represented in a variety of ways.
