Y6 Art – Week 13
Henri RousseauHenri Rousseau was a famous French painter. He was born in 1844 in Western France, and attended boarding school. At school, Rousseau won prizes for drawing and music. After he finished school, he spent his early life working as a tax collector. He taught himself to paint in his spare time, and started displaying his work in galleries in 1886. He is best known for his jungle scenes, such as Tiger in a Tropical Storm (Surprised!)
Henri Rousseau's Art was called 'Post Impressionism'.
Post Impressionism paintings used real life subject matter with vivid, bright colours, often with thick paint. However they added other ideas. This was an abstract style of art, which means that he didn't try to paint things exactly as they look in real life. Henri Rousseau was heavily criticised by a lots of artists because they thought his paintings were not very clever.
However, lots of other artists, such as Pablo Picasso, liked his work.
Y6 Art – Week 13
What can you see in these paintings?
How do these painting make you feel?
What colours are used?
What medium as used to create these paintings?
What part of the world do you think this painting shows?
Do you think Rousseau has ever been to the Rainforest?
How was he able to paint these paintings? What resources did he
use?
Y6 Art – Week 13
Over the next couple of weeks, we are going to be developing our own Rainforest scene!
This week we are creating the background.
Think about the repetition of shapes in different areas of the pictures and how you could make these seem like they are
more in the distance.
Think about how you can use different mediums to build up the effect of distance. For example, could you paint your plants and leaves that are further apart and cut out leaves that are in the close up? You can use pencils, paint or anything you can find!
First, draw a rough outline for your
horizontal line and the tree trunks.
Next, roughly colour some of the sky and
ground and leave some gaps open for effect.
Y6 Art – Week 13
Now, paint your tree trunks, remember the colour gets
lighter when the tree is further away.
Before you paint your leaves, practise on a scrap piece of
paper!
Now, add your
leaves.

Y6 Art – Week 13
Start filling in some gaps with long strands of grass.
You can now choose to add more trees and grass! But remember to use lighter colours as we will be using darker
colours for the middle and foreground.
Save your drawing for next week when we continue with the middle ground!
