Assignment 3Directions: Read the word lists. Practice until you are fluent. Fluent means reading words pretty much automatically. Reading will sound quick and smooth.Assessments will occur next week.

This week -- May 4th through May 8th

Practice reading the pattern words on pages 29 and 30. Also, practice reading the Memory Words listed

below.

NEXT week – May 11th through May 15th

We will assess automaticity of pattern and memory words. You will record your child reading the words and sending us either a video or sound clip through email or Dojo. If that

is not possible, please contact your child’s teacher, and we will arrange a phone call. We will be listening to how well your child reads both sets of words. If your child can read

the words quickly and easily, your child will receive a Capable grade. If your child needs to sound out several words or several clues from you, your child will receive a

Needs Improvement grade.

In order to achieve a Capable grade, your child will more than likely need to practice more than once, twice, or even

3 times.

Lasting Lesson

Responding to Teasing

Point out that in “For the Birds,” Toc and Alf had to deal with some big problems. First, the other Superkids accidentally left out Toc and Alf when they went to buy seeds. Toc and Alf had no seed to plant and no money to buy any, even though the garden was their idea. Ask your child if they think Toc and Alf felt frustrated or mad (yes) and why. (The garden was their idea and now they’re being left out.) Discuss what they did to solve this problem. (They planted birdseed.)

Point out that Toc and Alf had to deal with another problem right after they planted the birdseed. Ask your child how the other Superkids acted when they found out Toc and Alf were trying to grow plants from birdseed. (The other kids made fun of them and teased them.) Ask your child if Toc and Alf felt frustrated and annoyed (yes) and how they know this. (They talked to each other about how the other kids’ teasing annoyed them.) Then ask, “Did Toc and Alf yell at the Superkids or tease them back?” (no) Ask what they did instead of getting mad. (They watered their seeds and checked on them every day. ) Point out that this was a good way to respond to the teasing. Remind your child of the 7 Habits we work on in school. Remind them of Think- Win-Win. Ask them how the end of the story ended up as a Win-Win.
