MARK{Mar 1:1}[The] beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, [the] Son of God. {Mar 1:2}As it is written in the Prophets, “BEHOLD/LOOK! I SEND MY * MESSENGER BEFORE YOUR FACE,

WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR * WAY IN FRONT OF YOU, {Mar 1:3}[THE] VOICE [OF ONE] CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, ‘PREPARETHE WAY FOR [THE] LORD, MAKE HIS * PATHS STRAIGHT!’” {Mar 1:4}John came baptizing in the wilderness, and preaching a baptism of repentance for [the] forgiveness of sins. {Mar 1:5}And all the Judean region, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem were going out to him, and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River,

confessing their * sins. {Mar 1:6}Now * John had been putting on clothing of camel’s hair and a leather belt around his * waist, and [he had been] eating locusts and wild honey. {Mar 1:7}And he was preaching, saying, “One mightier [than] I is coming after me,

of whom I am not [worthy] enough to bend down to untie the strap of His * sandals. {Mar 1:8}I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with [the] Holy Spirit.” {Mar 1:9}And

it came to pass in those * days, Jesus came from Nazareth * in Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan. {Mar 1:10}And

immediately [when] coming up from the water,

He saw the heavens being split apart, and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove. {Mar 1:11}And a voice came out from the heavens, “You are My * beloved * Son;

in whom I am well pleased.” {Mar 1:12}And

immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness. {Mar 1:13}And He was there in the wilderness forty days,

being tempted by * Satan. And He was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to Him. {Mar 1:14}Now

after * John * was imprisoned, * Jesus went into * Galilee,

preaching the gospel of the kingdom * of God, {Mar 1:15}

and saying, * “The time has been fulfilled,

and the kingdom * of God has come near. Repent, and believe in the gospel!”

{Mar 1:16}And

walking beside the Sea * of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew, * Simon’s * * brother,

casting a net into the sea, because they were fishermen.

{Mar 1:17}And * Jesus said to them, "Come here/now, [follow] behind Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” {Mar 1:18}And

immediately, leaving their * nets,

they followed Him. {Mar 1:19}And

going on a little from there, He saw * James, the [son] of Zebedee, and John, his * brother, and they [were] in the boat mending their nets. {Mar 1:20}And

immediately He called them,

and having left their * father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and they followed after Him. {Mar 1:21}And they went into Capernaum, and

immediately on the Sabbath, having come into the synagogue,

He began to teach. {Mar 1:22}And they were amazed at His * teaching,

because He was teaching them like [one] having authority, and not like the scribes.

{Mar 1:23}Now there was a man in their * synagogue with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, {Mar 1:24}

saying, "Leave us alone! What [is there] with us and with You, Jesus of Nazareth? [Have] you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One * of God!”

{Mar 1:25}And * Jesus rebuked him,

saying, “Be quiet! And come out of him!” {Mar 1:26}And

[after] having convulsed him, the unclean * spirit,

also having cried out with a loud voice, came out of him. {Mar 1:27}And * they were all amazed,

so that [they began] to discuss/investigate among themselves, saying, “What is this? What * new * teaching [is] this?

Because with authority, He commands even the unclean * spirits, and they obey Him.”

{Mar 1:28}And the news about Him

immediately went out into all the region around * Galilee. {Mar 1:29}And

immediately [after] having gone from the synagogue,

He came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. {Mar 1:30}Now Simon’s * mother-in-law was lying down,

having a fever, and

immediately they told Him about her. {Mar 1:31}And

[after] having come, He raised her,

[by] taking hold of her * hand, and the fever

immediately left her, and she began to serve them. {Mar 1:32}Now

[when] evening had come, after the sun had set,

they began bringing to Him all those having sick[ness] and those being demon-possessed. {Mar 1:33}And the whole city was gathered together at the door. {Mar 1:34}And He healed many having sick[ness] with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And * He was not allowing the demons to speak,

because they knew Him. {Mar 1:35}Now

early in the morning, [when still] very dark, [after] having risen,

He departed and went away to a solitary/uninhabited place, [and] He was praying there. {Mar 1:36}And * Simon and those who were with Him searched for Him. {Mar 1:37}And

[after] having found Him they said to Him, * “Everyone is looking for You!” {Mar 1:38}And He said to them, “We should go into the adjoining villages,

so that I may preach there also, because I have come for this very thing.”

{Mar 1:39}And He was preaching in their * synagogues in all * Galilee, and casting out * demons. {Mar 1:40}Now

a leper came to Him, urging Him and falling to his knees [begging for help],

and he said to Him, * “If You are willing,

You can me clean.” {Mar 1:41}But * Jesus,

having compassion, having stretched out His * hand,

touched Him, and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed!” {Mar 1:42}And

[after] having spoken, immediately

his * leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed. {Mar 1:43}And

having sternly warned him, immediately

He sent him away, *. {Mar 1:44}and said to him, “See [that] you should say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest, and bring [the offering] for your * cleansing, those things which Moses commanded,

for a testimony to them. {Mar 1:45}But

having gone out he began to proclaim freely and to spread the word/story,

so that He [Jesus] [was] no longer able to enter publicly into a city, but He was outside in solitary/uninhabited places, and they were coming to Him from everywhere.

{Mar 2:1}Now He entered again into Capernaum after some days, and it was heard that He was in [the] house. {Mar 2:2}And

immediately many were gathered,

so that [there was] no longer room, not even * near the door, and He was speaking the word to them. {Mar 2:3}And they came,

bringing to Him a paralytic, being carried by four men.

{Mar 2:4}And

not being able to bring [him] in to Him, because of the crowd,

they removed the roof [above] where He was. And

[after] having dug through, they lowered the stretcher on which the paralytic was lying. {Mar 2:5}And * Jesus

[after] having seen their * faith, said to the paralytic, “Child, your * sins have been forgiven you.” {Mar 2:6}Now some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their * hearts [minds],

{Mar 2:7}“Why [does] this Man speak blasphemies like this? Who can forgive sins, * except * God alone?” {Mar 2:8}And

immediately * Jesus,

having perceived in His * spirit that they were reasoning like this within themselves, said to them, “Why are you reasoning these things in your * hearts? {Mar 2:9}Which is easier to say to the paralytic, ‘Your * sins have been forgiven,’ or to say ‘Get up, and take up your * stretcher, and walk’? {Mar 2:10}But

so that you may know that the Son * of Man has authority on * earth to forgive sins,” He said to the paralytic, {Mar 2:11}“I say to you, get up, and take up your * stretcher, and go to your * home.” {Mar 2:12}And he got up

immediately and

[after] having picked up his stretcher, went out in front of all,

so that [they were] all amazed and glorified * God, saying, * “Never have we seen [anything] like this!”

{Mar 2:13}And He went out again beside the sea, and all the crowd was coming to Him, and He was teaching them. {Mar 2:14}And

[while] passing by, He saw Levi [Matthew], the [son] * of Alphaeus,

sitting at the tax desk, and He said to him, “Follow me!” And

[after] having got up, he followed Him. {Mar 2:15}And it happened * that,

[while] He [was] reclining [eating a meal] in his * house, many tax collectors and sinners also were reclining [eating] with * Jesus and His * disciples,

because there were many, and they were following Him. {Mar 2:16}And the scribes [and] the Pharisees,

having seen Him eating with * tax collectors and sinners, also were saying to His disciples, “How [is it] that He eats and drinks with * tax collectors and sinners?” {Mar 2:17}And * Jesus

having heard, said to them, “Those being healthy have no need of a physician, but those having sick[ness]. * I did not come to call [the] righteous, but sinners, to repentance.” {Mar 2:18}Now the disciples of John and those of the Pharisees were fasting, and they came and said to Him, “* Why [do] the disciples of John and those of the Pharisees fast, but your * disciples * do not fast?”

{Mar 2:19}And * Jesus said to them, “The guests of the wedding hall * cannot fast

* while the bridegroom is with them, [can they?]

As long a time [as] they have the bridegroom with them, * they cannot fast. {Mar 2:20}But [the] days will come

when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and

then, in those * days, they will fast.

{Mar 2:21}Now no one sews a patch of new/unshrunken cloth on an old garment. Otherwise * * the patch pulls away from it, the new * from [the] old, [and] [the] tear becomes worse. {Mar 2:22}And no one puts new wine into old wineskins, otherwise * * the new * wine bursts the wineskins, and the wine is being poured out, and the wineskins will be destroyed. But [he must put] new wine into new wineskins,

that which must be put.” {Mar 2:23}Now it happened [that] He was passing through the grain fields on the Sabbath, and His * disciples began to make [their] way,

[while] plucking the heads of grain. {Mar 2:24}And the Pharisees said to Him, “Look! Why are they doing what is not lawful/permitted on the Sabbath?” {Mar 2:25}And He said to them, “* Have you never read what David did,

when he had need, and was hungry, he and those with him,

{Mar 2:26}how he entered into the house * of God

at [the time] of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the Bread of the Presence,

which * is not lawful/permitted to eat (* except by those priests)

and * he also gave [it] to those being with him?” {Mar 2:27}And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for * man, [and] not * man for the Sabbath. {Mar 2:28}Therefore, the Son * of Man is Lord, even of the Sabbath.” {Mar 3:1}And He entered into the synagogue again, and a man having a withered hand was there. {Mar 3:2}And they were watching Him closely *

[to see] if He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him.

{Mar 3:3}And He said to the man who had the withered hand, “Get up, [stand] in the middle.” {Mar 3:4}And He said to them, “Is it lawful/permitted on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save a life or to kill?” But they were silent. {Mar 3:5}And

[after] having looking around at them with anger, being grieved by the hardness of their * hearts,

He said to the man, “Stretch out your * hand!” And he stretched [it] out, and his * hand was restored,

healthy like the other. {Mar 3:6}And

[after] having gone out, the Pharisees,

immediately, with the Herodians,

began to make counsel against Him, so that they might kill/destroy Him.

{Mar 3:7}And * Jesus withdrew with His * disciples to the sea, and a great multitude from * Galilee followed Him. And

from * Judea, {Mar 3:8}

and from Jerusalem, and from * Idumea, and beyond/the other side of the Jordan, and around Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude * came to Him,

having heard the great things He was doing. {Mar 3:9}And He told His * disciples that a small boat should be kept ready for Him,

because of the crowd, so that * they would not press/crush Him.

{Mar 3:10}For He healed many,

with the result that all those who were having afflictions pressed upon Him, so that they could touch Him.

{Mar 3:11}And the unclean * spirits,

whenever they saw Him, were falling down before Him, and were crying out, saying, * “You are the Son * of God!” {Mar 3:12}And He was rebuking them sternly that [they should] not make Him known. {Mar 3:13}And He went up on the mountain, and called those whom He Himself wanted, and they came to Him. {Mar 3:14}And He appointed twelve,

so that they might be with Him, and so that He might send them out * to preach,

{Mar 3:15}and to have power/authority to heal * sicknesses and to cast out * demons.

{Mar 3:16}And He placed [appointed] * upon/to Simon [the] name Peter, {Mar 3:17}

and James, the [son] * of Zebedee, and John the brother * of James, * He also placed [appointed] upon/to them [the] names Boanerges, that is, “Sons of Thunder”, {Mar 3:18}and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James (the [son] * of Alphaeus), and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot, {Mar 3:19}and Judas Iscariot,

who also betrayed Him. And they came into [His] house. {Mar 3:20}And [the] crowd came together again,

so that they * were not able, even, to eat bread. {Mar 3:21}But

having heard, those of His [people/family] went out to take hold of Him,

for they were saying, * “He is insane!” {Mar 3:22}And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, * “He is possessed [by] Beelzebul!” and * “He casts out the demons

by the ruler of the demons!” {Mar 3:23}And

having called them, He began speaking to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? {Mar 3:24}And

if a kingdom is divided against itself, that * kingdom * cannot stand. {Mar 3:25}And

if a house is divided against itself, that * house * cannot stand. {Mar 3:26}And

if * Satan has risen up against himself and has been divided, * he cannot stand, but he has [come to] an end! {Mar 3:27}No one can enter into * a strong man’s * house to plunder his * things,

* unless first he ties up the strong man, and then he can thoroughly plunder his * house.

{Mar 3:28}“Truly I say to you that all * sins will be forgiven the sons * of men, and blasphemies/slanders,

as many as * they might blaspheme/slander, {Mar 3:29}but whoever * might blaspheme/slander against the Holy * Spirit, * does not have forgiveness * * forever, but is guilty of eternal condemnation/judgement -- {Mar 3:30}

because they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.” {Mar 3:31}Then His * brothers and * mother came, and,

having stood outside, they sent [word] to Him,

calling Him. {Mar 3:32}And a crowd was sitting around Him, and they said to Him, “Behold/Look, Your * mother and Your * brothers and Your * sisters * are outside looking for You.” {Mar 3:33}

But He answered them, saying, “Who is My * mother or My * brothers?” {Mar 3:34}And

looking around in a circle [at] those sitting around Him, He said, “Behold/Look! My * mother and My * brothers! {Mar 3:35}For

whoever does the will * of God, this one is My brother and My sister and mother.” {Mar 4:1}And

again He began to teach beside the sea, And a large crowd was gathered to Him,

so that He, having got into * [a] boat,

sat [in it] on the sea, and all the crowd was beside the sea on the land. {Mar 4:2}And He was teaching them many things in parables, and was saying to them in His * teaching, {Mar 4:3}“Hear [and understand]! Behold/Look! The sower went out * to sow. {Mar 4:4}And it happened [that],

as He [was] sowing, this [seed] indeed fell beside the path/road, and the birds came and ate/devoured it. {Mar 4:5}And other [seed] fell on the rocky [ground],

where * it did not have much earth/soil, and it sprang up

immediately because [it] had no * depth of soil,

{Mar 4:6}But it was burned/scorched [with heat],

[when/after] [the] sun having risen, and it withered,

because the [seed] had no root. {Mar 4:7}And other [seed] fell into/among the thorny plants, and the thorny plants came up and choked it, and [it] gave [produced] no crop/fruit/grain. {Mar 4:8}And other [seed] fell into/on the good * earth/soil, and gave [produced] crop/fruit/grain,

coming up and increasing, and it bore with thirty, and with sixty, and with a hundred [fruits/grains.] {Mar 4:9}And He said, “He who has ears to hear [and understand], let him hear [and understand]!” {Mar 4:10}And

when He was alone, those near Him, together with the twelve, asked about the parables. {Mar 4:11}And

He said to them, “To you it has been given to know/understand the mystery/hidden thing of the kingdom * of God, but to those men, to those outside, * everything comes in parables, {Mar 4:12}

so that, SEEING,

THEY MAY SEE BUT NOT KNOW/UNDERSTAND, AND

HEARING, THEY MAY HEAR BUT NOT UNDERSTAND,

LEST THEY MIGHT RETURN AND THEIR * SINS MIGHT BE FORGIVEN." {Mar 4:13}And He said to them, “* Do you not understand this * parable? Indeed, how will you understand all the parables? {Mar 4:14}The sower sows the word. {Mar 4:15}And these are the ones beside the path/road,

where the word is sown, and

when they hear, immediately

* Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in their * hearts. {Mar 4:16}And

in the same way, these are the ones sown on the rocky ground,

who when they hear the word immediately

receive it with joy, {Mar 4:17}

and they have no root in themselves, but are temporary.

After affliction or persecution comes because of the word, immediately

they are made to stumble. {Mar 4:18}And these are the ones sown among the thorny plants,

who hear the word, {Mar 4:19}

and the cares/worries of this * world and the deceitfulness * of riches and the lusts/desires for the remaining [other] things, coming in,

choke the word and it becomes unfruitful/unproductive. {Mar 4:20}But these are the ones sown on the good * earth/soil,

who hear the word, and receive [it] and bear fruit,

with thirty, and with sixty, and with a hundred [fruits/grains.”] {Mar 4:21}And He said to them, "* [A] lamp * is not brought

so that it may be put under * [a] basket or under * [a] bed, [is it?] [Is it] not [brought]

so that it may be put on * [a] lampstand? {Mar 4:22}For * nothing * is hidden

* except so that it may be revealed, nor has become hidden

except it should come to light. {Mar 4:23}

If anyone has ears to hear [and understand], let him hear [and understand]!” {Mar 4:24}And He said to them, “Be careful what you hear [and understand]!

By [the] measure by which you measure, it will be measured to you, and

to you who hear [and understand], [more] will be added. {Mar 4:25}For

whoever * has, [more] will be given to him, but

whoever * does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.” {Mar 4:26}And He said, “The kingdom * of God is like this: as if a man scatters * seed on the ground. {Mar 4:27}and he sleeps and is woken, night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows -- he himself * does not know how. {Mar 4:28}For

by itself the earth/soil bears grain/fruit: first, [the] grass; then, [the] head [of grain]; then, [the] full grain in the head. {Mar 4:29}But

when the fruit/grain delivers [ripens], immediately

he sends in the sickle because the harvest has come.”

{Mar 4:30}And He said, “To what might we liken the kingdom * of God, or by what kind of parable might we compare it? {Mar 4:31}[It is] like a mustard seed

which, when it is sown on the earth/soil,

is [the] smallest of all the seeds that [are] on the earth/soil, {Mar 4:32}but

when it is sown it grows up and becomes [the] largest of all the garden plants, and makes large branches,

so that THE BIRDS OF THE SKY can NEST UNDER ITS * SHADE.” {Mar 4:33}And

with many parables such as these He was speaking the word to them,

according to [what] they were able to hear [and understand], {Mar 4:34}and

without a parable, * He was not speaking to them. But

in private He was explaining everything to His own * disciples.

{Mar 4:35}And

on that * day, [when] evening having come,

He said to them, “Let us cross across to the other side [of the sea].” {Mar 4:36}And,

[after] having left the crowd, they took Him, [with them] in the boat,

just as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. {Mar 4:37}And a great storm/ violent whirlwind of wind developed, and the waves were breaking into the boat,

so that it already was being filled [with water]. {Mar 4:38}But He Himself was in the stern [back of the boat],

sleeping on * [a] cushion. And they woke Him, and said to Him, “Teacher, * is it not a care/concern to You that we are perishing/dying?” {Mar 4:39}And

being woken/raised up, He rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Silent! Be silent!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. {Mar 4:40}And He said to them, “Why are you afraid like this? How * do you not have faith?” {Mar 4:41}And they became afraid [with] great fear, and were saying to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?” {Mar 5:1}And they came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gadarenes/Gerasenes. {Mar 5:2}And

just as He was going out of the boat, from the tombs

a man with an unclean spirit immediately met Him, {Mar 5:3}

who had his dwelling among the tombs. And no one was able to bind him, not even with chains, {Mar 5:4}

because * he often had been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him, and the shackles had been broken in pieces.

And no one was strong [enough] to restrain him. {Mar 5:5}And

during every night and day, in the mountains and among the tombs,

he was crying out and cutting himself with stones. {Mar 5:6}And

having seen * Jesus from far away, he ran and bowed down before Him. {Mar 5:7}And

having crying out with a loud voice, he said, "What [is there] with me and with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High * God? I implore You, * God, [that] * you would not torment me!” {Mar 5:8}(For He said to him, “Come out of the man, * unclean * spirit!”) {Mar 5:9}And He asked him, “What [is] your name?” And he answered, saying, “My name [is] Legion, because we are many.” {Mar 5:10}And he was begging Him many [times] that * He would not send them out of the region. {Mar 5:11}Now a large herd of pigs was there,

feeding, near the mountain. {Mar 5:12}And all the demons begged Him, saying, “Send us into the pigs,

so that we may enter into them.” {Mar 5:13}And * Jesus immediately permitted them. And

[after] having come out the unclean * spirits entered into the pigs; and the herd rushed forward down the cliff/steep slope into the sea -- now, there were about two thousand [pigs] -- and they were drowned in the sea. {Mar 5:14}Now those [herdsmen] feeding the pigs fled, and they told [it] in the city and in the countryside. And they came to see what it was that had happened. {Mar 5:15}And they came to * Jesus, and saw the demon-possessed man

sitting, and having been clothed and being of sound/right mind -- (the one who had had the “Legion” -- and they were afraid. {Mar 5:16}And those who saw described to them how it had happened to the demon-possessed [man], and about the pigs. {Mar 5:17}And they began to beg Him to depart from their * region. {Mar 5:18}And

as He stepped into the boat, he who had been demon-possessed was begging Him that he might be with Him. {Mar 5:19}But * Jesus * did not let him. Instead, He said to him, “Go to your * home to * your [people/family], and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you,

and [how] He has had mercy on you.” {Mar 5:20}And he departed and began to proclaim in * Decapolis, what great things * Jesus had done for him, and * they were all amazed. {Mar 5:21}And

[after] * Jesus had crossed over in the boat again to the other side, a large crowd gathered to Him, and He was beside the sea. {Mar 5:22}And behold one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name, and

[after] having seen Him, he fell down at His * feet. {Mar 5:23}And he was begging Him many [times], saying, * “My * little daughter is at the last [point of death]. [Please come,]

so that having come,

You might lay Your hands on her, so that she may be healed and will live.”

{Mar 5:24}And He went with him, and a large crowd was following Him, and pressing on Him. {Mar 5:25}And a certain woman

being with haemorrhage of blood [for] twelve years, {Mar 5:26}

and having suffered many things under many physicians/doctors, and having spent all of her things [money], and having been helped nothing, but, more than that, having become worse,

{Mar 5:27}having heard about * Jesus, having come behind [Him] in the crowd,

touched His * outer garment, {Mar 5:28}

because she said, * "Even if I touch His * outer garments,

I will be healed!” {Mar 5:29}And

immediately the flow of her blood was dried up, and she knew/felt in her body that she had been healed of her scourge [affliction].

{Mar 5:30}And

immediately, having known in Himself that power had gone out from Himself, having turned in the crowd,

* Jesus said, "Who touched My * clothes?"

{Mar 5:31}And His * disciples were saying to Him, "You see the crowd, pressing against You, and You say Who touched Me?'"

{Mar 5:32}And He was looking around to see the woman having done this thing.

{Mar 5:33}But,

being afraid and trembling, knowing what had happened to her,

the woman came and fell down before Him, and told Him all the truth.

{Mar 5:34}And He said to her, “Daughter, your * faith has healed you. Go in peace, and be healed from your * scourge [affliction].

{Mar 5:35}[While] * He [was] still speaking,

people came from the [house of the] ruler of the synagogue, saying *, "Your * daughter has died. Why still trouble the Teacher?"

{Mar 5:36}But,

immediately, hearing the message being spoken,

* Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “* Do not be afraid, only believe!” ‘hearing the message’ NET has ‘paying no attention to what was said’

{Mar 5:37}And * He let noone accompany Him,

* except Peter and James and John, the brother of James.

{Mar 5:38}And they came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw a noise/commotion,

much weeping/mourning and wailing/crying. ‘noise’ is a very loud, confused commotion (this word is used of a riot)

{Mar 5:39}And

having entered, He said to them, “Why are you being noisy and weeping/mourning? The child * is not dead, but is asleep.”

{Mar 5:40}And they began laughing at Him. But,

* having sent everyone out, He took the father of the child and the mother and those with Him, and He went in to where the child was lying.

{Mar 5:41}And

having taking hold of the child’s * hand, He said to her, “Talitha, koumi!” (which is translated, * “Little girl, I say to you, rise/get up!”)

{Mar 5:42}And

immediately the girl rose/got up and began walking around

(because she was twelve years [old]). And they were amazed,

[with] great amazement/ecstatics.

{Mar 5:43}And He commanded them strictly that no one should know of this thing, and He said [that something] be given to her to eat.

{Mar 6:1}Now He went out from there, and came to His own country/hometown, and His * disciples followed Him.

{Mar 6:2}And,

[the] Sabbath having come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And,

hearing Him, many were amazed, saying, “These things [taught] by this man, where [did He learn them]? And what [is] this wisdom which has been given to Him; and miracles such as these being done through His * hands?

{Mar 6:3}Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James, and of Joses and of Judas and of Simon? And are not His * sisters here with us?” And they were offended at Him. ‘offended’ means ‘to cause to stumble’. Instead of believing in Him, they chose to reject Him.

{Mar 6:4}But * Jesus said to them, *, “A prophet * is not without honour,

* except in his own * country/hometown, and among his relatives, and in his own * house.”

{Mar 6:5}And * He was not able to do any miracle there,

* except to lay His hands on a few sick people to heal [them].

{Mar 6:6}And He was amazed/astonished

because of their * unbelief. And He was going around among the villages,

teaching.

{Mar 6:7}And He called the twelve and began to send them out *,

two [by] two, and He gave them authority over the unclean * spirits.

{Mar 6:8}And He instructed them that they should take nothing for [the] way/journey,

* except a staff alone -- no bag/leather pouch, no bread, no coins/money in their belt,

{Mar 6:9}but, to tie/put on sandals, and not to put on two tunics [clothes].

{Mar 6:10}And He said to them,

“Wherever * you enter into a house, stay there

until * you depart from that place.

{Mar 6:11}And as many as * * do not receive/welcome you, or hear you,

[when] departing from that place, shake off the dust * under your * feet

for a testimony against them. Truly I say to you, it will be [more] bearable for Sodom or for Gomorrah in [the] day of judgement than for that * city!" NASB and NET omit last sentence.

{Mar 6:12}And,

having gone out, they were preaching that people should repent.

{Mar 6:13}Now they were casting out many demons, and anointing many sick people with oil, and healing [them].

{Mar 6:14}And * King Herod heard,

because His * name had become [well] known/evident. And he was saying *, “John, he who baptizes, has been raised from [the] dead, and because of this these miracles are working in Him.” ‘he was saying’ NASB and NET have ‘they/people…’ (Probably ‘Herod’, see next two verses)

{Mar 6:15}Others were saying *, “He is Elijah”. But others were saying *, “He is a prophet,

like one of the prophets.”

{Mar 6:16}But,

having heard [about the miracles], * Herod said *, "This is John, whom I beheaded. He has been raised from [the] dead!"

{Mar 6:17}For * Herod himself,

having sent [men], took hold of [arrested] * John, and bound him in prison

because of Herodias, the wife of Philip his * brother, because he [Herod] had married her.

{Mar 6:18}For * John [had been] saying * to Herod *, “* It is not lawful for you to have your * brother's * wife."

{Mar 6:19}Now * Herodias was holding [this] against him, and was wanting to kill him. But * she was not able [to do so],

{Mar 6:20}because * Herod was afraid [of] * John,

knowing him [to be] a righteous and holy man, and he was protecting him.

And, having heard him,

he [Herod] was doing many things, and he was hearing him gladly. ‘he was doing many things’ Textual variation. NASB and NET have ‘he was very perplexed/throughly baffled’

{Mar 6:21}Now,

an opportune day having come, on his * birthday, when Herod was making a dinner/banquet for his nobles/officials and * military commanders and the leading men * of Galilee,

{Mar 6:22}and his * daughter, [the daughter] of Herodias, having come,

and having danced and having pleased * Herod and his dinner guests, the king said to the girl, “Ask me whatever * you want, and I will give [it] to you.”

{Mar 6:23}And he swore to her *, "Whatever * you ask me, I will give to you, up to half my * kingdom!”

{Mar 6:24}Now,

having gone out, she said to her * mother, “What shall I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptizer.”

{Mar 6:25}And,

having come in, immediately, with haste,

to the king, she asked, saying, “I want * you to give the head of John the Baptizer to me on a platter/plate, immediately.”

{Mar 6:26}And,

being exceedingly sad, the king * did not want to refuse her,

because of the oaths and the dinner guests.

{Mar 6:27}And

immediately, having sent an executioner,

the king commanded his * head to be brought. And,

going, he beheaded him in the prison. In MT, the last sentence appears in next verse.

{Mar 6:28}And he brought his * head on a platter/plate, and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her * mother.

{Mar 6:29}And,

having heard, his * disciples came, and took away his * fallen [dead body], and laid it in a tomb.

{Mar 6:30}Now the apostles gathered together with * Jesus, and reported to Him everything,

indeed, as much as they had done and as much as they had taught.

{Mar 6:31}And He said to them, "Come away, you by * yourselves [privately], to an uninhabited place and rest a little”,

(because there were many people coming and * going, and * they were not even having time to eat.)

{Mar 6:32}And they went away to an uninhabited place in the boat by themselves [privately].

{Mar 6:33}But the [people] saw them going, and many recognized Him, and they ran together on foot from all the cities to that place, and went ahead of them, and came together to them.

{Mar 6:34}And,

having come out [of the boat], * Jesus saw a large crowd, and had compassion on them,

because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. And He began to teach them many things.

{Mar 6:35}And,

[the] hour already having become very [late], having come to Him,

His * disciples said *, “This place is uninhabited, and [the] hour [is] already [very] late.

{Mar 6:36}Send them away *

so that, having gone into the surrounding countryside and villages,

they may buy bread for themselves, because * they have nothing * that they may eat."

{Mar 6:37}But

having answered, He said to them, "You give them [something] to eat!" And they said to Him,

"Having gone away, should we buy bread for two hundred denarii, and give [it] to them to eat?” ‘denarii’ One denari was a day’s wages

{Mar 6:38}But He said to them, “How many loaves/bread do you have? Go and see!” And,

having found out, they said, “Five [loaves], and two fish.”

{Mar 6:39}And He commanded them all to recline

groups [by] groups on the green grass,

{Mar 6:40}And they reclined,

arrangements [by] arrangements, by hundreds and by fifties.

{Mar 6:41}And,

having taken the five loaves and the two fish, having looked up to * heaven,

He blessed [the bread]/praised [God], and broke the loaves, and He kept giving [them] to His * disciples,

so that they might set [them] before them; and He divided the two fish among [them] all.

{Mar 6:42}And * they all ate and were filled/satisfied,

{Mar 6:43}and they took/picked up twelve baskets full of broken pieces, and [also] of the fish. These are the leftovers.

{Mar 6:44}Now those having eating the loaves/bread were five thousand men. This is apart from women and children.

{Mar 6:45}And

immediately, He made His * disciples to step/get into the boat, and go on ahead to the other side, to Bethsaida,

while He sent away the crowd.

{Mar 6:46}And

having said farewell/separated from them, He went away to the mountain to pray.

{Mar 6:47}And,

evening having come, the boat was in [the] middle of the sea, and He [was] alone on the land.

{Mar 6:48}And He saw them being tested/straining in their rowing,

because the wind was against them. And,

about [the] fourth watch of the night, He came to them,

walking on the sea; and He was wanting to pass by them. ‘tested/straining’ means ‘to test (metals), to torture/torment, to be harassed/distressed’

{Mar 6:49}But

having seen Him walking on the sea, they thought [Him] to be a ghost. And they cried out,

{Mar 6:50}because * they all saw Him, and were terrified.

But immediately

He spoke with them and said to them, “Have courage! I am! * Do not be afraid!” ‘I am!’ is correct literally. NKJV, NASB and NET all have ‘It is I’

{Mar 6:51}And He went up into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they were astonished and they were amazed,

exceedingly beyond measure, [more] than abundant,

within themselves,

{Mar 6:52}because * they had not understood about the bread/loaves,

because their * heart was hardened.

{Mar 6:53}And,

having crossed over, they came to the land [at] Gennesaret, and anchored [there].

{Mar 6:54}And,

having come out from their * boat, immediately

the people recognized Him.

{Mar 6:55}Having run around that * whole neighbouring [region],

they began to carry around those having sick[ness] on * stretchers/beds, wherever they were hearing that He was in that place.

{Mar 6:56}And,

wherever * He went, into villages or cities or [the] countryside, they were laying those being sick in the marketplaces, and and they were urging Him,

that, even if they might touch the fringe/edge of His * cloak/outer garment,

indeed, as many as * were touching Him, were healed. ‘touched Him’ NASB and NET have ‘it’

{Mar 7:1}Now the Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered together around Him,

having come from Jerusalem.

{Mar 7:2}And,

having seen some of His * disciples eating bread with unclean/defiled hands, that is, unwashed, they found fault. NASB and NET omit ‘they found fault’

{Mar 7:3}(For the Pharisees and all the Jews * do not eat,

* unless they wash their hands [ceremonially] with a fist, holding the tradition of the elders,

{Mar 7:4}and,

[when coming] from [the] marketplace, if * they do not [ceremonially] wash,

* they do not eat. And there are many other things which they have received to hold: [such as the ceremonial] washings of cups and of pitchers/bowls and of bronze vessels and of dining couches.)

{Mar 7:5}Then the Pharisees and the scribes asked Him, "* Why [do] Your * disciples not walk [live] according to the tradition of the elders, but they eat * bread with [ceremonially] unwashed hands?”

{Mar 7:6}And,

having answered,

He said to them *, “Isaiah correctly prophesied about you * hypocrites, as it is written, ‘THIS * PEOPLE HONOURS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR * HEART IS DISTANT, FAR FROM ME.

{Mar 7:7}AND THEY WORSHIP ME IN VAIN;

TEACHING, AS DOCTRINES, [THE] COMMANDMENTS OF MEN.’

{Mar 7:8}For,

having abandoned/left the commandment * of God, you hold the tradition * of men. You do [ceremonial] washings of pitchers/bowls and of cups and * of many other things such as these." NASB and NET omit last sentence.

{Mar 7:9}And He said to them, “[All too] well, you set aside the commandment * of God,

so that you might keep your * tradition.

{Mar 7:10}For Moses said, ‘HONOUR YOUR * FATHER AND YOUR * MOTHER,’ and, ‘HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER MUST END [BE PUT] TO DEATH.' ‘speaks evil’ NKJV has ‘curses’, NASB has ‘speaks evil’, NET has ‘insults’. All are valid translations.

{Mar 7:11}But you say,

‘If a man says to his father or to his mother, “Whatever gift,

which * you might have been helped by from me, is ‘corban’ [that is, a gift dedicated to God], To avoid giving money/help to parents, some Jews would declare their possessions ‘corban’ (ie dedicated to God). They would continue to use them for themselves, but not give help to their parents. This is clearly using a ‘religious rule’ to avoid ‘honouring your father and mother’.

{Mar 7:12}and * you no longer let/allow him do anything for his father or his * mother,

{Mar 7:13}making void the word * of God

by your * tradition, which you have handed down. And you do many things * such as this.” ‘making void’ means ‘to make void, to deprive of authority’. NASB has ‘invalidating’; NET has ‘nullifying’

{Mar 7:14}And,

having called all the crowd, He was saying to them, “Hear Me, everyone, and understand:

{Mar 7:15}There is nothing outside of the man,

entering into him, which can defile [make unclean] him. Rather,

the things coming out of him, these things are the things which defile [make unclean] the man.

{Mar 7:16}If anyone has ears to hear,

let him hear!" NET omits this verse.

{Mar 7:17}And

when He entered into a house, away from the crowd,

His * disciples asked Him about the parable.

{Mar 7:18}And He said to them, "In this, also, are you without understanding? * Do you not understand that all the things outside,

going into the man, * cannot defile [make unclean] him, ‘without understanding’ can be ‘stupid, without intelligence’ NET has ‘foolish’

{Mar 7:19}because * it does not enter into his * heart [mind], but into his stomach, and goes out into the toilet?"

[( He said this,] cleansing/purifying all * foods.) Because foods are passed out of the body, no food is ‘unclean’ or can ‘defile’ the body.

{Mar 7:20}And He was saying *, “What comes out of the man, that thing defiles [makes unclean] the man.

{Mar 7:21}For

from inside, from the heart * of men come out * bad/evil * thoughts, adulteries, sexual immoralities, murders, NASB and NET include ‘thefts’ here, not next verse

{Mar 7:22}thefts, [all types of] covetousness/greediness, [all types of] wickedness, deceit, unbridled lust, [the] evil eye, slander, arrogance/pride, foolishness. ‘all types of…’ greediness and wickedness are plural‘the evil eye’ NASB and NET have ‘envy’

{Mar 7:23}All these * evil things come out from within and defile [make unclean] the man.”

{Mar 7:24}And,

from there, having got up,

He departed into the region of Tyre and Sidon. And,

having entered into a house, He wanted no one to know, but * He was not able to be hidden [stay in secret].

{Mar 7:25}Because a woman,

whose own * young daughter had an unclean spirit, having heard about Him, having come,

fell down at His * feet,

{Mar 7:26}Now the woman was a Greek [Gentile], a Syro-Phoenician * by race/birth, and she kept asking Him that He might cast the demon out of her * daughter.

{Mar 7:27}But * Jesus said to her, “You let the children to be fed/filled/satisfied first,

because it is not right to take the children’s * bread, and to throw [it] to the little dogs!"

{Mar 7:28}But she answered and said to Him, "Yes, Lord, [but] * even the little dogs under the table eat from the young children's * crumbs."

{Mar 7:29}And He said to her,

“Because of this * word/answer, go! The demon has gone out of your * daughter.”

{Mar 7:30}And,

[when] having come to her * home, she found the demon had gone, and her daughter lying on the bed.

{Mar 7:31}And

again, having gone from the region of Tyre and Sidon,

He came to the Sea * of Galilee, in [the] midst of the region of [the] Decapolis.

‘Decapolis' (literally ‘Ten Cities’), this is where the demon possessed man in the tombs was, and the incident of the pigs

{Mar 7:32}And they brought to Him [a] deaf man, [who] spoke with difficulty, and they begged Him that He might put/lay His * hand [on him].

{Mar 7:33}And

having taken him from the crowd, by himself/privately,

He put His * fingers into his * ears, and,

having spat, He touched his * tongue,

{Mar 7:34}and,

having looked up to * heaven, He sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha!” (that is, “Be opened!”)

{Mar 7:35}And

immediately his * ears were opened, and the bond/chain on his * tongue was released, and he began speaking correctly [normally].

{Mar 7:36}And He commanded them that they should tell no one, but,

as much as He was commanding them, they were proclaiming more abundantly.

{Mar 7:37}And they were amazed beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well!” * “He even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak!"

{Mar 8:1}In those * days,

being a very large crowd and not having anything they could eat, having called His * disciples,

* Jesus said to them,

{Mar 8:2}“I have compassion on the crowd

because they have remained with Me already [for] three days, and * they do not have anything to eat.

{Mar 8:3}And

if I send them away * hungry to their homes, they will grow weary/faint on the way,

because some of them [have come] from far away to hear." NKJV, NASB and NET omit ‘to hear’

{Mar 8:4}And His * disciples answered Him, "How/From where can someone feed/satisfy these people with bread, here in [the] desert?”

{Mar 8:5}And He was asking them, “How many loaves/bread do you have?” And they said, “Seven.”

{Mar 8:6}And He directed the crowd to recline/sit on the ground. And,

having taken the seven loaves, having given thanks,

He broke [them] and kept giving [them] to His * disciples, so that they could set [them] before [them].

And they set [them] before the crowd.

{Mar 8:7}And they were having a few small fish, also.

Having blessed [the fish]/praised [God], He said to set [them] before them also.

{Mar 8:8}And they ate and were filled/satisfied. And they took/picked up seven baskets [full] of leftovers of broken pieces.

{Mar 8:9}Now the men having eaten were about four thousand men. And * He sent them away. ‘4000 men’ apart from women.

{Mar 8:10}And

immediately having stepped/got into the boat with His * disciples,

He went to the part/district of Dalmanutha.

{Mar 8:11}Now the Pharisees came out, and they began to discuss/argue with Him,

seeking from Him a sign from * heaven, testing Him.

{Mar 8:12}And

having sighed deeply in His * spirit, He said, “Why [does] this * generation seek a sign? Truly I say to you, * [no] sign will be given to this * generation!”

{Mar 8:13}And

having left them, having stepped/got again into a boat,

He went to the other side.

{Mar 8:14}Now they had forgotten to take bread, and,

* except [for] one loaf/bread, * they did not have [any] with them in the boat.

{Mar 8:15}And He commanded them, saying, “Watch out! Beware of the leaven/yeast of the Pharisees and the leaven/yeast of Herod!” ‘leaven’ is a picture of sin, that which corrupts and spreads to all

{Mar 8:16}And they were discussing with one another saying *, “We have no bread”. NKJV has ‘It is because we have no bread”.

{Mar 8:17}And

having become aware [of this], * Jesus said to them, “Why are you discussing that you have no bread? * Do you not yet perceive or understand? Still have your * heart[s] been hardened?

{Mar 8:18}HAVING EYES,

* DO YOU NOT SEE? AND

HAVING EARS, * DO YOU NOT HEAR? And * do you not remember?

{Mar 8:19}When I broke the five loaves/bread for the five thousand,

how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take/pick up?” They said to Him, “Twelve.”

{Mar 8:20}And

when [I broke] the seven [loaves/bread] for the four thousand, how many fullnesses of large baskets of broken pieces did you take/pick up?” And they said, “Seven.” ‘fullnesses’ is a noun, same root word as in previous verse‘baskets’ is a different word to previous verse

{Mar 8:21}And He was/kept saying to them, "How * do you not understand?” This must have been frustrating for Jesus!‘understand’ This word (also used in Mark 8:17) means ‘to put things together, to deduce from the evidence … so that you understand’

{Mar 8:22}And

He came to Bethsaida. Now they brought a blind man to Him, and begged Him that He might touch [him].

{Mar 8:23}And,

having taken hold of the blind man's * hand, He led him outside the village, and,

having spat into his eyes, He put His hands on him. He was asking him if he saw anything.

{Mar 8:24}And,

having looked up, he said, “I see * men, [but] * I see [them] like trees, walking." ‘looked up’ can be translated ‘looked up, looked again, regained sight’

{Mar 8:25}Then He put His hands on his * eyes again, and made him look up. And he/it [his sight] was restored, and he saw everyone clearly.

{Mar 8:26}And He sent him to his * home, saying "* Do not go into the village, and do not tell anyone in the village." NASB and NET omit last clause

{Mar 8:27}Now * Jesus and His * disciples went to the villages of Caesarea * Philippi, and,

on the way, He asked His * disciples, saying to them, “Who [do] the people say [that] I am?”

{Mar 8:28}And they answered, “John the Baptizer, and others, Elijah, and others, one of the prophets.”

{Mar 8:29}And He said to them, “But you, who do you say I am?” And,

having answered, * Peter said to Him, “You are the Christ!”

{Mar 8:30}And He warned them that they should tell no one about Him.

{Mar 8:31}And He began to teach them that it was necessary [for] the Son * of Man to suffer many things, and to be rejected

by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and to be killed, and,

after three days, to rise again.

{Mar 8:32}And He was speaking this word openly/plainly. And,

having taken Him [aside], * Peter began to rebuke Him.

{Mar 8:33}But,

having turned around and having seen His * disciples, He rebuked * Peter, saying, “Get behind Me, Satan;

because * you are not thinking/understanding the things * of God, but the things * of men!”

‘thinking/understanding’ NASB and NET have ‘setting your mind’

{Mar 8:34}And,

having called the crowd, together with His * disciples, He said to them, "Whoever wants to follow [as a disciple] after Me, he must deny himself, and he must take/life up his own * cross, and he must follow Me. ‘take up his cross’ In the ancient world, anyone who was carrying a cross was about to die (be crucified).

{Mar 8:35}For whoever * wants to save his own * life will lose it, but whoever * loses the life of himself,

for [My] sake * and [for the sake] of the gospel, this man will save it. The context is ‘Are we prepared to die (ie ‘lose our life) for Christ?’ (Jesus said He was going to Jerusalem to die, Mark 8:31).

{Mar 8:36}For what will it benefit/profit a man

if he gains the whole world but loses his * life?

‘life’ NKJV and NASB incorrectly have ‘soul’. But this is the same word as in previous verse. It can mean ‘soul, life’, but in context, Jesus is talking about dying, losing your life.‘loses’ is a different word than used in previous verse. It means ‘to suffer loss, to damage’.

{Mar 8:37}Or what [will] a man give in exchange for his own * life? ‘life’ NKJV and NASB incorrectly have ‘soul’. See previous verse.‘give in exchange’ Those who are truly disciples, and follow Jesus in suffering and death ‘for His sake’, will be rewarded with great glory (ruling the kingdom with Him) in eternity. Jesus is asking ‘Are you prepared to give up your life for Me, in exchange for this glory?’

{Mar 8:38}For

whoever * is ashamed of Me and My * words in this * adulterous and sinful * generation,

the Son * of Man also will be ashamed of him, when He comes

in the glory of His * Father with the holy * angels.

‘is ashamed of Me’ is equivalent to ‘not being prepared to suffer and die for Him’, in context. This is not ‘loss of salvation’.‘glory’ Because Jesus is faithful, He will be rewarded with honour and glory (especially to sit at the right hand of the Father, and to rule His kingdom). The following verses show how Jesus will be glorified when He comes again at the Second Advent, to establish the kingdom.

{Mar 9:1}And He was saying to them, “Truly I say to you *, there are some of those standing here who * * will by no means taste death

until * they see the kingdom * of God has come with power.” This verse is fulfilled in the next few verses. Three disciples 'see' Jesus in His glory, as He will be in the kingdom.

{Mar 9:2}And

after six days, * Jesus took * Peter and * James and * John, and brought them to a high mountain by themselves/privately, alone. And He was transfigured before them,

{Mar 9:3}and His * clothes became shining,

white/bright beyond measure, like snow, such as no launderer on * earth can make white.

{Mar 9:4}And Elijah, together with Moses, appeared to them, and they were talking with * Jesus.

{Mar 9:5}And,

having answered, * Peter said * to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good [for] us to be here! And we should make three tents/tabernacles -- one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah”,

{Mar 9:6}(because * he had not known what to say

because they were terrified.)

{Mar 9:7}And a cloud came,

enveloping/overshadowing them, and a voice came from the cloud, “This is My * beloved * Son. Hear Him!”

{Mar 9:8}And

suddenly, having looked around,

they saw no one anymore, but/except * Jesus alone with them.

{Mar 9:9}And,

going down from the mountain, He commanded them that they should describe the things they had seen to no-one,

* except when/after the Son * of Man had risen from [the] dead. ‘except when/after’ NKJV, NASB and NET have ‘until …;

{Mar 9:10}And they held/kept this word/matter to themselves,

discussing together what this thing, ‘to have risen from [the] dead’, might be.

{Mar 9:11}And they asked Him, saying, “Why [do] the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

{Mar 9:12}And,

having answered, He said to them, “Indeed, Elijah,

having come first,

does restore all things. But, how is it written concerning the Son * of Man, that He should suffer many things and be despised/treated with contempt? Jesus is showing the disciples that there must be two advents. How can it be that Elijah comes to restore the hearts of the people to God before the Messiah comes, but then the people reject the Messiah? In the First Advent, the Jesus came to die for sin, and Israel rejected Him. Prior to the Second Advent, Elijah will bring Israel to repentance, then Jesus will come again to establish the kingdom.

{Mar 9:13}But I say to you that Elijah indeed has come, and they did to him whatever they wanted,

just as it is written about him.” ‘Elijah’ John the Baptist was a type of Elijah. John came as the herald of the First Advent; Elijah (and probably Moses, as the two witnesses) will come as the herald for the Second Advent.

{Mar 9:14}Now,

having come to the disciples, He saw a large crowd around them, and scribes discussing/arguing with them. ‘having come’ Jesus and the three have just returned from the Mount of Transfiguration, and see the other disciples, who were waiting for them.

{Mar 9:15}And

immediately, having seen Him,

all the crowd was amazed, and,

running to [Him], were greeting/welcoming Him.

{Mar 9:16}And He asked the scribes, “What are you discussing/arguing with them?”

{Mar 9:17}And one man from the crowd,

having answered, said “Teacher, I brought my * son,

having a mute spirit, to You.

{Mar 9:18}And

wherever * it seizes him, it throws him down [to the ground] * and he foams at the mouth and gnashes/grinds his * teeth and becomes rigid/stiff. And I told Your * disciples,

so that * they should cast [it] out, but * they were not able.

{Mar 9:19}And

having answered them, He said, “O unbelieving generation! Until when will I be with you? Until when will I bear you? Bring him to Me!” ‘be … bear’ They are depending upon Jesus’ faith. Jesus wants them to have their own faith (and power). (And yet, in Mark 9:29, He says this demon can’t be cast out except by prayer and fasting.)

{Mar 9:20}And they brought him to Him. And,

having seen Him, immediately

the spirit convulsed him. And,

having fallen to the ground, he was rolling,

foaming at the mouth.

{Mar 9:21}And He asked his * father, “How much time is it that this thing has been happening to him?” And he said, "From childhood.

{Mar 9:22}And

often * it has even thrown him into the fire and into water,

so that it might destroy/kill him. But

if You can [do] something, help us,

having compassion on us.” ‘if You can’ see next verse.

{Mar 9:23}But * Jesus said to him, “This thing [you said], ‘If You can’ -- * all things [are] possible for him who believes.” #9 infinitive ‘to believe’ probably is not in the original (as per NASB and NET)‘if you can’ is exactly the same phrase as previous verse. Jesus is asking the man, “Do you really believe that I can heal him?” But instead of ‘anything’, Jesus adds ‘all things are possible’‘possible’ is the same root word as ‘can’ (able, strong, powerful).

{Mar 9:24}And,

immediately, having cried out with tears,

the father of the child was saying “I believe! Lord, help my * unbelief!”

{Mar 9:25}Now,

having seen that a crowd was running together, * Jesus rebuked the unclean * spirit, saying to it, "* Mute and deaf * spirit, I command you, come out of him, and enter into him no more!” ‘enter’ is subjunctive ‘you should enter … no more’ (‘come out’ is imperative).

{Mar 9:26}And,

having cried out and having convulsed him greatly, it came out. And he became as if dead,

so that many said *, “He has died!”

{Mar 9:27}But

having taken hold of his * hand, * Jesus raised him, and he got up.

{Mar 9:28}Now,

having entered * into [the] house, His * disciples were asking Him * privately, "Why [were] we not able * to cast [it] out?"

{Mar 9:29}

And He said to them, “This * kind can come out by nothing

* except by prayer and fasting." NASB and NET omit ‘and fasting’

{Mar 9:30}Now,

having gone out from there, they were passing through * Galilee, but * He did not want * anyone to know [it],

{Mar 9:31}because He was teaching His * disciples and was telling them *, "The Son * of Man is being delivered/betrayed into [the] hands of men, and they will kill Him. And,

having been killed, on the third day,

He will rise.”

{Mar 9:32}But they were not understanding this word, and they were afraid to ask Him.

{Mar 9:33}And He came to Capernaum. And,

having come into the house, He was asking them, “What were you discussing among yourselves on the way?”

{Mar 9:34}But they kept silent,

because they had discussed/argued with one another on the way [about] who [was] greatest. argued' The next 15 verses answer this. In Mark 9:50, He tells the disciples to 'make peace with one another'.

{Mar 9:35}And,

having sat down, He called the twelve and said to them,

“If anyone wants to be first, he will be last of all, and servant of all.

{Mar 9:36}And,

having taken a young child/infant, He put it in their midst. And,

* having taken [it] in His arms, He said to them,

{Mar 9:37}“Whoever * receives one of the young children/infants such as this,

in My * name, receives Me; and whoever * receives Me, receives not Me, but Him who sent Me.”

{Mar 9:38}And,

having answered Him, * John said, “Teacher, we saw someone who * is not following with us casting out demons

in Your * name, and we forbade/hindered/stopped him

because * he is not following with us.

{Mar 9:39}But * Jesus said, “* Do not forbid/hinder/stop him,

because there is no one who will do a miracle in My * name

and will be able soon afterward/quickly to speak evil of Me,

{Mar 9:40}because whoever is not against us is for us.

{Mar 9:41}For

whoever * gives you a cup of water in My name, because you are of Christ,

truly I say to you * * he [will] never lose his * reward. NASB and NET have ‘because you bear the name of Christ’

{Mar 9:42}But

whoever * has put a stumbling block before/has caused to stumble one of these little ones, those believing in Me,

it is * better for him if a millstone * is laid/tied around his * neck, and he be thrown into the sea.

{Mar 9:43}And

if your * hand * causes [you] to stumble, * cut [it] off! It is better for you to enter into * life maimed/crippled, [rather] than,

having * two hands, to go to * hell, into the unquenchable * fire,

{Mar 9:44}where THEIR * WORM * DOES NOT DIE/END AND THE FIRE * IS NOT QUENCHED.

NET omits this verse - they have only Mark 9:48

{Mar 9:45}And

if your * foot * causes [you] to stumble, * cut [it] off! It is better for you to enter into * life lame, [rather] than,

having two * feet, to be thrown into * hell, into the unquenchable * fire, NASB and NET omit the last phrase.

{Mar 9:46}where THEIR * WORM * DOES NOT DIE/END AND THE FIRE * IS NOT QUENCHED.

NET omits this verse - they have only Mark 9:48

{Mar 9:47}And if your * eye * causes [you] to stumble, * throw it out! It is better for you to enter into the kingdom * of God with one eye, [rather] than,

having two eyes, to be thrown into the hell * of fire,

{Mar 9:48}where THEIR * WORM * DOES NOT DIE/END AND THE FIRE * IS NOT QUENCHED."

{Mar 9:49}For everyone will be seasoned/sprinkled/salted with fire,

and every sacrifice will be seasoned/sprinkled/salted with salt. NASB and NET omit second clause

{Mar 9:50}* Salt [is] good, but

if the salt becomes unsalty, with what will you season/sprinkle/salt it? Have salt in yourselves, and make peace with one another!” ‘with what will you salt it’ NASB and NET have ‘with what will you make it salty again’‘make peace with one another' The disciples had been arguing about who was greatest (see Mark 9:34)

{Mar 10:1}And from there, having got up,

He came to the region * of Judea, by the other side of the Jordan.

And again

crowds went together to Him, and,

as He was accustomed, again,

He was teaching them.

{Mar 10:2}And,

having come, the Pharisees,

testing Him, asked Him, “* Is it lawful for a man to divorce [his] wife?”

{Mar 10:3}And,

having answered, He said to them, “What [did] Moses command you?”

{Mar 10:4}And they said, “Moses permitted [a man] TO WRITE A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE, AND TO DIVORCE [HER].”

{Mar 10:5}And,

having answered, * Jesus said to them, “He wrote this * commandment for you

because of your * hardness of heart.

{Mar 10:6}But

from [the] beginning of creation, * GOD MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE.

{Mar 10:7}BECAUSE OF THIS [REASON],

A MAN WILL LEAVE HIS * FATHER AND * MOTHER, AND WILL BE JOINED TO HIS * WIFE, NASB and NET omit last clause.

{Mar 10:8}AND THE TWO WILL BECOME * ONE FLESH/BODY. Therefore, they are no longer two, but one flesh/body.

{Mar 10:9}Therefore what * God has joined together, no man must separate.”

{Mar 10:10}And,

in the house, His * disciples asked Him about this same thing,

again.

{Mar 10:11}And He said to them, “Whoever * divorces his * wife and marries another, commits adultery against her.

{Mar 10:12}And

if a wife divorces her * husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

{Mar 10:13}Now, they were bringing young children/infants to Him, that He might touch them, but the disciples rebuked those bringing [the children].

{Mar 10:14}But,

having seen [this], * Jesus was very displeased/indignant, and said to them, “Let the young children/infants come to Me! * Do not hinder/forbid/stop them,

because of those such as these is [belongs] the kingdom * of God.

{Mar 10:15}Truly I say to you, whoever * * does not receive the kingdom * of God

like a young child/infant * * will never enter into it.”

{Mar 10:16}And,

* having taken [them] in His arms, placing His hands upon them,

He was blessing them.

{Mar 10:17}And,

[as He was] going on His way, one man,

having run and having knelt down before Him, asked Him, “Good Teacher, what should I do that I may inherit eternal life?” ran … bowed down' The rich young ruler expressed true humility

{Mar 10:18}And * Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one [is] good *

except * God alone. good' Jesus is asking 'Do you believe that I am God?'

{Mar 10:19}YOU KNOW THE COMMANDMENTS: * ‘DO NOT MURDER, * DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, * DO NOT STEAL, * DO NOT GIVE FALSE TESTIMONY, * do not defraud/rob, HONOUR YOUR * FATHER AND * MOTHER.’” Parallel Matt 19:16-30; Luke 18:18-30. Matthew adds 'love your neighbour as yourself'. Both omit 'do not defraud'.do not defraud/rob' This is not one of the 10 commandments. Jesus quoted Exod 20:13-16 in sequence, but omitted 'do not covet' and added 'do not defraud/rob' in its place. He was probably emphasizing the weakness of the rich young ruler.

{Mar 10:20}And,

having answered, he said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept all these things from my youth.”

{Mar 10:21}But,

having looked at him, * Jesus loved him, and said to him, “One thing is lacking by/for you: Go, sell all you have and give to [the] poor --

and you will have treasure in heaven -- and come, follow Me,

having taken up the cross." NASB and NET omit ‘having taken up the cross’loved him' Jesus had true compassion for him.sell … follow Me' The rich young ruler was unwilling to sell his possessions. Jesus showed him that he actually coveted his wealth - he had not 'kept' all of the commandments.take up cross' This is 'killing yourself' and living totally for Jesus.

{Mar 10:22}But,

looking saddened by this word, he went away sorrowful,

because he was having many possessions. ‘many possessions’ He was a ‘rich ruler/prince’ (Luke 18:18)

{Mar 10:23}And,

having looked around, * Jesus said to His * disciples, "Those having * riches will enter * with difficulty into the kingdom * of God!”

{Mar 10:24}And the disciples were amazed at His * words. But,

having answered, * Jesus again said to them, “Children, how difficult it is for those who have trusted in riches to enter into the kingdom * of God! NASB and NET omit ‘for those who have trusted in riches’

{Mar 10:25}It is easier [for] a camel to enter through the eye of the needle, than [for] a rich man to enter into the kingdom * of God.” eye of the needle' was a small gate into Jerusalem

{Mar 10:26}And they were amazed/shocked beyond measure, saying among themselves, “Then who can be saved?” ‘then’ is actually kai (and, but, …)

{Mar 10:27}And,

having looked at them, * Jesus said, “With men, [it is] impossible, but not with God;

because all things are possible with * God.”

{Mar 10:28}* Peter began to say to Him, “Look/Behold, we have left everything, and followed You.”

{Mar 10:29}And,

having answered,

* Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields

for [My] sake * and for the sake of the gospel,

{Mar 10:30}* * who will not receive a hundred times as many houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and fields, with persecutions --

now in this * time -- and,

in the age [forever/eternity] * to come, eternal life. ‘with persecutions’ This is discipleship (following), and suffering (persecutions) and dying (taking up the cross) for Christ

{Mar 10:31}But many [who are] first will be last, and the last [will be] first.”

{Mar 10:32}Now they were on the road,

going up to Jerusalem. And * Jesus was going ahead of them, and they were amazed. And,

following [Him], they were afraid. And,

again, having taken to Himself the twelve,

He began to tell them the things about to happen to Him ‘going to Jerusalem … following [Him]’ He had told them He will suffer and die in Jerusalem.‘they were amazed’ Because Jesus was going to Jerusalem, not hesitating.‘they were afraid’ Because they were ‘following Him’, and would likely suffer and die, too.

{Mar 10:33}*, “Look/Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son * of Man will be delivered/betrayed to the chief priests and [the] scribes, and they will condemn Him to death, and will deliver Him to the Gentiles [Romans],

{Mar 10:34}and they will mock Him, and scourge/whip Him, and spit on Him, and kill Him. And,

on the third day, He will rise again.”

{Mar 10:35}And,

coming near to Him, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, said, “Teacher, we want * You to do for us whatever * we ask."

{Mar 10:36}And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?”

{Mar 10:37}And they said to Him, “Give to us that we may sit, one at Your right hand, and one at Your left hand, in Your * glory.” The right and left hands are the positions of glory. It is interesting that this comes shortly after Jesus told them that ‘The first shall be last’!

{Mar 10:38}But * Jesus said to them,

"* You do not know what you are asking! Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and to be baptized [with] the baptism [with] which I am baptized?” ‘cup … baptism’ This is ‘sharing’ the sufferings/persecution/death of Jesus, and being identified with Him (‘for My sake’)

{Mar 10:39}And they said to Him, “We are able.” And * Jesus said to them, "Indeed you will drink the cup that I drink, and you will be baptized [with] the baptism [with] which I am baptized,

{Mar 10:40}but * to sit at My right hand and at [My] left hand is not Mine to give, but [it is] for those for whom it has been prepared.”

{Mar 10:41}And,

having heard [this], the ten began to be very displeased/indignant about James and John.

{Mar 10:42}And

having called them, * Jesus said to them, “You know that those having a reputation to rule over the Gentiles subdue/lord it over them, and their * great men exercise authority over them.

{Mar 10:43}But * it will not be like this with you. Instead, whoever * wants to become great among you will be your servant,

{Mar 10:44}and whoever * of you wants to be first must be a slave of all.

{Mar 10:45}For even the Son * of Man * did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His * life [as] a ransom for many.”

{Mar 10:46}Now, they came to Jericho. And,

[as He was] * departing from Jericho, [with] * His * disciples and a large crowd Bartimaeus the blind man, [the] son of Timaeus, was sitting beside the road, begging.

{Mar 10:47}And,

having heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out and say, "Jesus, * Son of David, have mercy on me!”

{Mar 10:48}And many people were rebuking him, that he should be quiet, but he was crying out much more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

{Mar 10:49}And,

having stopped, * Jesus said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Be of good courage! Get up! He is calling you.”

{Mar 10:50}And,

having thrown off his * cloak/outer garment, having got up,

he came to * Jesus.

{Mar 10:51}And,

having answered, * Jesus said to him, “What do you want Me to do for you?” And the blind man said to Him, “Rabbi, that I might regain sight.”

{Mar 10:52}And * Jesus said to him, “Go! Your * faith has healed you.” And

immediately he regained sight, and began to follow * Jesus on the road.

{Mar 11:1}And

when they came near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount * of Olives,

He sent two of His * disciples,

{Mar 11:2}and said to them, “Go into the village * before you, and,

immediately going into it, you will find a young donkey tied,

on which no man has sat. Having untied it,

bring [it].

{Mar 11:3}And

if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say * ‘The Lord has need of it, and he [will] send it here immediately." it' the young donkey is singular masculine (see Mark 11:2)NASB and NET includes last clause as part of what the disciples are to say, ‘He will send it back here soon’. But see Mark 11:6

{Mar 11:4}And they went and found the young donkey,

having been tied to the door, outside in the street,

and they untied it.

{Mar 11:5}And some of those who stood there were saying to them, “What are you doing, untying the young donkey?”

{Mar 11:6}And they spoke to them,

just as * Jesus had commanded, and they let them [take it].

{Mar 11:7}And they brought the young donkey to * Jesus, and threw/put their * cloaks/outer garments [on] it,

and He sat on it.

{Mar 11:8}And many people spread their * cloaks/outer garments on the road, and others were cutting leafy branches from the trees, and were spreading [them] on the road. NASB and NET have ‘fields’ instead of ‘trees’

{Mar 11:9}And those going before, and those following [behind], were shouting, saying, “HOSANNA! BLESSED [IS] HE WHO COMES IN [THE] NAME OF [THE] LORD!

{Mar 11:10}Blessed [is] the coming kingdom * * * of our * father David! Hosanna in the Highest!" NASB and NET omit ‘in the name of the Lord' (#5,6,7)

{Mar 11:11}And He entered into Jerusalem and into the temple. And,

having looked around at everything, the hour being late/evening already,

* Jesus went out to Bethany with the twelve.

{Mar 11:12}And

on the next day, * having come from Bethany,

He was hungry.

{Mar 11:13}And,

having seen a fig tree from far away, having leaves,

He came, if therefore He will find anything on it.

And, having come,

He found nothing on it, * except leaves, because it was not [the] time/season for figs.

From now on, Jesus argues with the religious leaders, talks in parables, and warns Israel of judgement, including the Tribulation (Mark 13), culminating in 'learn the parable of the fig tree' in Mark 13:28.If fig trees have leaves, they will have small figs that are going to mature. This fig tree did not have anything. It is a sign that Israel is not going to produce any fruit (in the near future), therefore it is useless and will be destroyed.

{Mar 11:14}And,

having answered, * Jesus said to it, "No man [will] eat fruit anymore from you * * forever!” And His * disciples heard [it]. ‘having answered’ NKJV has ‘in response’ This is probably more the sense.

{Mar 11:15}And they came to Jerusalem. And,

having entered into the temple, * Jesus began to throw out those selling and buying in the temple, and He overturned the tables of the moneychangers, and the chairs of the sellers * [of] doves. doves' were sacrifices offered by poor people.

{Mar 11:16}And * He was not allowing that anyone should carry [any] vessel/utensil through the temple.

‘vessel/utensil’ possibly in the sense of merchandise for sale.

{Mar 11:17}And He was teaching, saying to them, * “Is it not written * ‘MY * HOUSE WILL BE CALLED A HOUSE OF PRAYER FOR ALL THE NATIONS’. But you have made it A CAVE/DEN OF THIEVES/ROBBERS!”

{Mar 11:18}And the scribes and the chief priests heard [this], and they were seeking how they could kill Him;

because they were afraid of Him because all the crowd was amazed by His * teaching.

{Mar 11:19}And,

when evening came, He departed out of the city.

{Mar 11:20}And,

early in the morning, passing by the fig tree,

they saw [it], dried up/withered from [the] roots.

{Mar 11:21}And,

having been reminded, * Peter said to Him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree which You cursed has dried up/withered!”

{Mar 11:22}And,

having answered, * Jesus said to them, “Have faith in God!

{Mar 11:23}For truly I say to you *, whoever * says to this * mountain, ‘Be lifted up and be thrown into the sea!’ and * does not doubt in his * heart, but believes that those things he says will happen, what * he said will be [done] for him. doubt' The Gk word is 'judge, discern, examine', but can be translated 'doubt'

{Mar 11:24}For this [reason], I say to you, all things, as much as you would you ask,

praying, you must believe that you [will] receive, and it will be [done] for you.

{Mar 11:25}And

whenever you stand, praying, if you have anything against anyone,

you must forgive, so that your * Father * in * heaven * may also forgive you of your * trespasses.

{Mar 11:26}But

if you * do not forgive, neither [will] your * Father * in * heaven forgive your * trespasses." NET omits this verse

{Mar 11:27}

Now, they came again to Jerusalem. And,

[as He was] * walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to Him,

{Mar 11:28}and said to Him, “By what authority are You doing these things, and who gave You this * authority to You do these things?”

{Mar 11:29}And

having answered, * Jesus said to them, "I will ask you * one question, and you must answer Me. and [then] I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things.

{Mar 11:30}The baptism of John -- was it from heaven or from men? Answer Me!”

{Mar 11:31}And they were reasoning with one another, saying,

"If we say ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘* Why then * did you not believe him?’

{Mar 11:32}But

[if] we say ‘From men’ --" (they were afraid of the people,

because everyone was holding that * John was truly a prophet).

{Mar 11:33}And,

having answered, they said * to Jesus * “We do not know." And

having answered, * Jesus said to them, “Neither * [will] I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.” tell you' Jesus actually tells them in the following parable

{Mar 12:1}And He began to speak to them in parables: “A man PLANTED A VINEYARD, AND PUT A FENCE/WALL/HEDGE AROUND [IT] *, AND DUG A PIT UNDER THE WINEPRESS, AND BUILT A WATCHTOWER. And he rented [it] to farmers/vinegrowers, and went on a journey [to a far country]. ‘pit’ under the winepress to collect the wine when the grapes are crushed

{Mar 12:2}And he sent a slave to the farmers

at the [appointed/harvest] time, so that he might receive [some] of the fruit of the vineyard from the farmers.

The owner expected fruit. This is explaining the story of the fig tree, which was cursed because it had no fruit.

{Mar 12:3}But,

having seized him, they beat [him], and sent [him] away empty-handed.

{Mar 12:4}And

again he sent another slave to them,

and, having thrown stones,

they hit [him] on the head, and sent [him] away, having dishonoured/disgraced [him].

NASB and NET omit ‘having thrown stones’

{Mar 12:5}And

again he sent another, and they killed [him]; and many others,

indeed this one, beating and that one, killing.

{Mar 12:6}Then,

still having one son, his beloved, he sent him also to them,

last, saying *, ‘They will respect my * son.’

{Mar 12:7}But those * farmers said to themselves *, ‘This is the heir. Come we should kill him, and the inheritance will be ours!’

{Mar 12:8}And,

having seized him, they killed [him], and threw [him] out of the vineyard.

{Mar 12:9}Therefore, what [will] the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill/destroy the farmers, and will give the vineyard to others.

{Mar 12:10}But have you not read this * Scripture: ‘[THE] STONE WHICH THOSE BUILDING REJECTED, THIS HAS BECOME * [THE] HEAD/CHIEF CORNER[STONE].

{Mar 12:11}THIS CAME FROM [THE] LORD AND IT IS WONDERFUL IN OUR EYES’?”

{Mar 12:12}And they were seeking to take hold of Him, (but they were afraid of the crowd),

because they knew that the parable was spoken about them. And,

having left Him, they went away.

{Mar 12:13}Now they sent to Him some of the Pharisees and of the Herodians

so that they might trap Him in a word.

{Mar 12:14}Now,

having come to Him, they said, “Teacher we know that You are truthful, and * it is of no concern [partiality] to You about anyone,

because * You do not look to [the] face of man; but You teach the way * of God in truth. Is it lawful to give tax to Caesar or not? no concern/face of man' is to show partiality.

{Mar 12:15}Should we give [tax] or not give [tax]? But,

having known their * hypocrisy, He said to them, “Why are you testing Me? Bring Me a denarius

so that I can look [at it]!”

{Mar 12:16}And they brought [one]. And He said to them, “Whose * image and * inscription [is] this?” And they said to Him, “Caesar’s.”

{Mar 12:17}And,

having answered, * Jesus said to them, “Give the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things * of God * to God!” And they were amazed at Him.

{Mar 12:18}Now, Sadducees --

who say there is no resurrection -- came to Him, and asked Him, saying,

{Mar 12:19}“Teacher, Moses wrote for us that,

IF A MAN’S BROTHER DIE, and leave a wife, AND NOT LEAVE CHILDREN, THAT HIS * BROTHER SHOULD TAKE [MARRY] HIS * WIFE, AND RAISE UP A SEED/DESCENDANT [CHILD] FOR HIS * BROTHER.

{Mar 12:20}There were seven brothers. And the first took a wife, and,

having died, * he did not leave a seed/descendant [child].

{Mar 12:21}And the second [brother] took her, and he died, and he * did not leave a seed/descendant [child]. And the third [brother], likewise.

{Mar 12:22}And the seven [brothers] took her, and * did not leave a seed/descendant [child]. Last of all the woman also died.

{Mar 12:23}In the resurrection,

when they rise, whose of the [seven brothers] wife will she be? For [all] the seven [brothers] had her [as] wife. Remember, the Sadduccees did not believe in resurrection (Mark 12:18)

{Mar 12:24}And,

having answered, * Jesus said to them, “* Are you not in error,

because of this, [because you do] not know/understand the Scriptures or the power * of God? Their error is that they don’t understand (or believe in) the resurrection

{Mar 12:25}For

when they rise from [the] dead, * they do not marry nor are they given in marriage, but they are like the angels in * heaven.

{Mar 12:26}Now,

concerning the dead, that they are raised, * have you not read in the book of Moses [in the passage] about the [burning] bush, how * God spoke to him, saying, I [AM] THE GOD OF ABRAHAM AND THE GOD OF ISAAC AND THE GOD OF JACOB’?

{Mar 12:27}He is not the God of [the] dead, but [the] God [of the] living. Therefore, you [all] * are very much in error!”

{Mar 12:28}And,

having come near, one of the scribes,

having heard them discussing/debating, seeing that He answered them well,

asked Him, “Which commandment is [the] first/most important of all?”

{Mar 12:29}And * Jesus answered him *, “[The] first/most important of all the commandments is, HEAR, O ISRAEL! [THE] LORD OUR * GOD, [THE] LORD [IS] ONE. ‘one’ There is only one God (see Mark 12:32)

{Mar 12:30}AND YOU WILL LOVE [THE] LORD YOUR * GOD WITH ALL YOUR * HEART AND WITH YOUR ALL * SOUL/LIFE AND WITH YOUR ALL * MIND AND WITH YOUR ALL * STRENGTH.’ This [is] [the] first/most important commandment.

{Mar 12:31}And [the] second, like it, [is:] ‘YOU WILL LOVE YOUR * NEIGHBOUR AS YOURSELF.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” NASB and NET omit ‘like it’

{Mar 12:32}And, the scribe said to Him, "[You have spoken] rightly, Teacher. You have said in truth [rightly] that HE IS ONE, AND THERE IS NO OTHER BESIDES HIM.

{Mar 12:33}And * TO LOVE HIM WITH ALL YOUR HEART AND WITH ALL YOUR UNDERSTANDING AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL/LIFE AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, and * TO LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOUR AS YOURSELF, is greater than all the all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

{Mar 12:34}And

having seen him, that he answered wisely, * Jesus said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom * of God.” And no one dared to question Him any more.

{Mar 12:35}

And, having answered,

* Jesus was saying, teaching in the temple,

“How [can] the scribes say that the Christ/Messiah is David’s son?

{Mar 12:36}For David himself said by [the] Holy Spirit, THE LORD SAYS TO MY * LORD "SIT AT MY RIGHT [HAND]

UNTIL * I MAKE YOUR * ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR * FEET.”’

{Mar 12:37}David himself calls Him ‘LORD,’ and, therefore, how can He be his son?” And the large crowd was listening to Him gladly.

{Mar 12:38}And He was saying to them in His * teaching, “Be careful of the scribes,

who want to walk around in long robes, and greetings in the marketplaces,

{Mar 12:39}and [the] best seats in the synagogues, and [the] places of honour at * banquets,

{Mar 12:40}who devour the houses * of widows, and pray long [prayers] for outward appearance.

These will receive greater judgement/condemnation!”

{Mar 12:41}Now,

having sat down opposite the treasury [of the temple], * Jesus was watching how the crowd was putting coins [money] into the treasury. And many rich people were putting in many [coins]. treasury' Rooms in the temple where offerings are made/stored.

{Mar 12:42}And,

having come, one poor widow put in two small copper coins (that is, a quadran [one cent]).

{Mar 12:43}And,

having called His * disciples, He said to them, “Truly I say to you that this * poor * widow has put in more than all those who put into the treasury,

{Mar 12:44}because * they all put in out of their * surplus/abundance, but she, out of her * poverty, put in everything, whatever she had, her whole * life."

{Mar 13:1}And,

having gone out * out of the temple, one of His * disciples said to Him, “Teacher, see what great stones and what wonderful buildings!”

{Mar 13:2}And,

having answered,

* Jesus said to him, "Do you see these * great buildings? * Absolutely no stone [will] be left upon [another] stone that * * [will] absolutely not be demolished!"

{Mar 13:3}And,

[as He was] * sitting on the Mount * of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked Him * privately,

{Mar 13:4}“Tell us, when [will] these things happen? And what [will be] the sign when all these things are about to be fulfilled?" Matt 24:3 adds ‘the sign of the end of the Age’ (ie the Second Advent)

{Mar 13:5}And

having answered, * Jesus began to say to them, "Be careful [that] no one deceives you! deceive' means to 'lead astray, away from the truth'

{Mar 13:6}For many will come in My * name,

saying, * ‘I am [Jesus, the Messiah/Christ],’ and they will deceive many.

{Mar 13:7}And,

when you hear about wars and rumours of wars, * do not be troubled/frightened;

because this must happen, but the end [is] not yet.

‘the end’ of the Age (see Matt 24:3)

{Mar 13:8}For nation [ethnic group] will rise up against nation [ethnic group], and kingdom against kingdom; and there will be earthquakes [in various] * places; and there will be famines; And these disturbances [are] [the] beginnings of birth pains. ‘nation’ is literally ‘ethnos’ This probably refers to conflicts between ethnic groups. Conflicts between countries is covered by ‘kingdom against kingdom’.birth pains' get more frequent and more intense closer to 'the end'

{Mar 13:9}But you, be careful for yourselves! Because they will deliver you to sanhedrins/assemblies/courts and to synagogues, and you will be beaten. You will be made to stand before governors and kings

for My sake *, for a witness to them.

‘sandhedrins … synagogues’ is persecution by Jews‘governors … kings’ is persecution by Gentiles

{Mar 13:10}And the gospel must first be preached to all the nations. ‘first’ before the end comes‘be preached’ In context, this is standing before Gentile governors and kings ‘for a witness’ – see previous verse and next verse

{Mar 13:11}And

when they arrest you, delivering [you] over,

* do not be anxious beforehand what you [will] say, and do not worry,

but whatever * is given to you in that * hour, say that thing, because you are not the ones speaking, but the Holy * Spirit.

{Mar 13:12}And brother will betray/hand over brother to death, and a father [his] child, and children will rise up against parents, and * will put them to death.

{Mar 13:13}And you will be hated by all

because of My * name. But he who endures to [the] end, this one will be saved/rescued. ‘end' in context, is the end of the Age (ie until the Second Advent). Jesus will come at the end of the Tribulation, and rescue/save those Jews who call out to Him (at the Battle of Armageddon).

{Mar 13:14}But

when you see the ABOMINATION * OF DESOLATION, that which was spoken of by Daniel the prophet,

standing where * it should not be (he who reads must understand),

then those in * Judea must flee/escape to the mountains! NASB and NET omit ‘that which was spoken of by Daniel the prophet’

{Mar 13:15}And the one on the housetop * must not come down into the house, or go inside to take anything out of his * house,

{Mar 13:16}and the one being in the field * must not turn back to the things to take his * cloak/outer garment. ‘cloak/outer garment’ While doing work, the outer clothes were left in a pile at one end of the field. He is to run, without even going to get his clothes.

{Mar 13:17}But woe to those having [pregnant with a baby] in [the] womb, and to those nursing [babies] in those * days! Being pregnant, or having a nursing baby, makes it difficult to run/escape to the mountains.

{Mar 13:18}But pray that your * flight/fleeing * might not be in winter.

{Mar 13:19}For those * days will be [a time of] tribulation/affliction

* of such a kind as * has not happened from [the] beginning of creation which * God created until * now, and * never shall be.

{Mar 13:20}And

* except/unless [the] Lord cut short those days, no * flesh * would be saved. But

for the sake of the elect/chosen, whom He chose,

He cut short those days.

{Mar 13:21}And,

at that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look! here [is] the Christ,’ or ‘Look! [he is] there,’

* do not believe [him]!

{Mar 13:22}because false christs/messiahs and false prophets will arise, and they will give signs and miracles

[in order] to * deceive, if possible, even the elect/chosen.

{Mar 13:23}But you, watch/be careful! Look! I have told you everything [beforehand]! watch' can be translated 'see, perceive, discern, be careful, take care‘I have told’ is literally ‘to tell beforehand’

{Mar 13:24}“But

in those * days, after that * tribulation/affliction,

THE SUN WILL BE DARKENED, AND THE MOON * WILL NOT GIVE ITS * LIGHT, This is the sign of the Second Advent, at the end of the Tribulation

{Mar 13:25}AND THE STARS * OF HEAVEN WILL BE FALLING, and the powers * in the heavens will be shaken.

{Mar 13:26}And

then/at that time, they will see THE SON * OF MAN,

COMING IN [THE] CLOUDS with great power and glory.

{Mar 13:27}And

then/at that time, He will send out His * angels, and He will gather His * elect/chosen,

from the four winds, from [the] furthest end of the earth to [the] furthest end of heaven.

{Mar 13:28}Now learn the parable from the fig tree:

when its * branch * has [already] become tender and it sprouts * leaves, you know that the summer is near. fig tree/summer' This is the sign that the end (Second Advent) is near.

{Mar 13:29}And,

in the same way, when you see these things happening,

you must know that He is near, at [the] doors.

{Mar 13:30}Truly I say to you *, this * generation * * will by no means pass away

until * all these things happen. this generation' likely refers to the Jews (the nation). God is faithful, and will fulfill His promises to the believing remnant of Israel at the Second Advent/Millennium.

{Mar 13:31}* Heaven and * earth will pass away, but My * words * * will never pass away.

{Mar 13:32}But

concerning that * day or hour, no one knows,

not even the angels * in heaven, nor the Son, * except the Father.

{Mar 13:33}Watch! Be alert and pray!

because * you do not know when that time is! NASB and NET omit ‘and pray’

{Mar 13:34}[It is] like a man away [on a journey],

having left his * house, and having given his * slaves * authority, and to each one his * work,

and he gave orders to the doorkeeper that he should be alert. alert' can also be translated 'watching'

{Mar 13:35}Therefore you [all] must be on the alert!

because * you do not know when the lord/master/owner of the house is coming -- evening or midnight or at the crowing of the rooster or early morning [dawn] --

{Mar 13:36}lest,

having come suddenly, He find you sleeping.

‘lest’ means ‘so that … He not find you sleeping’

{Mar 13:37}And what I say to you, I say to everyone: Be on the alert!”

{Mar 14:1}Now,

after two days, it was the Passover and * [Feast of] Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how,

having arrested [Him] by deceit, they could kill Him.

{Mar 14:2}But they said, “Not during the Feast,

so that there not be an uproar/riot of the people.”

{Mar 14:3}And,

[as He] * was at Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, * reclining [for a meal],

a woman came, having an alabaster [jar] of very costly, genuine [pure] nard aromatic oil/perfume.

And, having broken the albaster [jar],

she poured [it] over His * * head. alabaster' is a white gypsum/calcite used to make jars and statutesnard' is 'spikenard' an aromatic oil produced from the root of the spikenard plant in India and China

{Mar 14:4}But some were indignant towards her, and saying among [themselves], “Why has there been the waste of this * aromatic oil/perfume?

{Mar 14:5}For

this could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii, and [the money] given to the poor!” And they were rebuking her. three hundred denarii' is nearly a year's wages. It is a lot of money!

{Mar 14:6}But * Jesus said, “Leave her! Why do you give trouble/grief to her? She has done a good deed to Me.

{Mar 14:7}For you have the poor with you always, and you can do good to them whenever you want, but * * you do not always have Me.

{Mar 14:8}She has done well. She has taken what [oil/perfume] she had to anoint My * body [beforehand] for * burial. she' ALT3 D-NSFbeforehand' is part of the verb #5 'to take beforehand/in anticipation'

{Mar 14:9}And truly I say to you,

wherever * this * gospel is preached in all the world, indeed, what she has done will be told in memory of her.” ALT18 D-NSF Pron Demonstrative-Nom-Sing-Fem

{Mar 14:10}Now * Judas * Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests

so that he might deliver/betray Him to them.

{Mar 14:11}And

having heard [this], they rejoiced and promised to give him money. And He began seeking how he might deliver/betray Him when the opportunity arose.

{Mar 14:12}And

on the first day of the [Feast of] Unleavened Bread, when they were killing/sacrificing the Passover lamb,

His * disciples said to Him, “Where,

having gone, do You want us to prepare,

so that You might eat the Passover?”

{Mar 14:13}And He sent two of His * disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying an earthen vessel of water will meet you. Follow him, ‘a man … carrying water’ Culturally, this was normally woman’s work – he was a slave (see next verse)

{Mar 14:14}and

wherever * he enters, say to the master of the house *, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is the guest room where I might eat the Passover with My * disciples?”’

{Mar 14:15}And he will show you a large, prepared, upper room,

having been furnished [with couches]. Prepare for us there.”

{Mar 14:16}And His * disciples went out, and came into the city, and found [it],

just as He had told them. And they prepared the Passover. ‘prepared’ This would suggest that they killed the lamb, and ate the Passover that night. (This seems to be one day early. It is commonly held that Jesus was died on the afternoon when the Passover lambs were being killed, and then His body taken down so that it would not remain on the cross during the Passover feast.)

{Mar 14:17}Now,

having become late/evening, He came with the twelve.

{Mar 14:18}And,

[as they were] * reclining and eating, * Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, that one of you -- he who eats with Me -- will deliver/betray Me."

{Mar 14:19}And they began to be grieved/sorrowful, and to say to Him, one by one, “Surely not I?” and another, "Surely not I?” surely not I' Each disciple was unsure of his own standing - but none suspected Judas.

{Mar 14:20}But,

having answered, He said to them, "[It is] one of the twelve -- he who dips [bread] with Me into the bowl.

{Mar 14:21}Indeed the Son * of Man goes,

just as it is written about Him, but woe to that * man by whom the Son * of Man is being delivered over/betrayed! It would be better for him if that * man * had not been born."

{Mar 14:22}And,

[while they were] * eating, having taken bread and having blessed [it],

* Jesus broke [it], gave [it] to them, and said, “Take, eat, this is My * body.” NASB and NET omit ‘eat’

{Mar 14:23}And,

having taken the cup, having given thanks,

He gave [it] to them, and * they all drank from it.

{Mar 14:24}And He said to them, “This is My * blood, the [blood] of the new covenant,

which is being poured out for many.

{Mar 14:25}Truly I say to you that no more * * will I ever drink of the fruit of the vine,

until that * day when I drink it new

in the kingdom * of God.” ‘never drink’ On the cross, they offered Him sour wine, but He refused

{Mar 14:26}And,

having sung [the Psalm/praise], they went out to the Mount * of Olives.

{Mar 14:27}And * Jesus said to them *, "All [of you] will be made to stumble [because of] * Me during this * night,

because it is written, I WILL STRIKE THE SHEPHERD, AND THE SHEEP WILL BE SCATTERED.' NASB and NET omit ‘because of Me’

{Mar 14:28}But,

after [I have been] * raised, I will go before/ahead of you into * Galilee.” ‘before/ahead of’ This is the image of the Shepherd regathering and leading His flock (see previous verse)

{Mar 14:29}But * Peter said to Him,

“Even if all will be made to stumble, but I [will] not!”

{Mar 14:30}And * Jesus said to him, “Truly I say to you, that you,

this very day, in this * night, before a rooster crows * twice,

you will deny Me three times!” ‘you will deny Me’ In the previous verse, Peter was adamant “I will not!’ Jesus says ‘you’ three times in this verse.

{Mar 14:31}But he [Peter] kept saying * more [and] more,

“If I must die with You, * * I will never deny You!” And all [of them] were saying [the] same also.

{Mar 14:32}Now they came to a place which [has] the name Gethsemane, and He said to His * disciples, “Sit here until I have prayed.”

{Mar 14:33}And He took * Peter and James and John with Him, and He began to be terrified and troubled/distressed.

{Mar 14:34}And He said to them, “My * soul is exceedingly grieved/sorrowful, even to the point of death. Remain here and watch/be alert.”

{Mar 14:35}And,

having gone a short [distance], He fell to the ground, and began to pray that,

if it were possible, the hour would pass from Him.

{Mar 14:36}And He was saying, “Abba [Father], * Father, all things [are] possible for You! Take away this * cup from Me! Yet, not what I want/will, but what you [want/will.”]

{Mar 14:37}And He came and found them sleeping, and He said * to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? * Were you not able to watch/be alert [for] one hour?

{Mar 14:38}Watch/be alert and pray,

so that * you will not come into temptation. Indeed the spirit [is] willing, but the flesh [is] weak.”

{Mar 14:39}And

again, going away,

He prayed, saying the same word.

{Mar 14:40}And,

having returned, He found them again, [and] they were sleeping,

because their * eyes were heavy. And * they did not know what to answer Him.

{Mar 14:41}And He came the third [time], and said to them, “Are you still sleeping * and resting? It is enough! The hour has come. Look/Behold! {Mar 14:42}Get up! We should go. Look/Behold! He who is delivering/betraying Me has come!”

{Mar 14:43}And

immediately, [while He was] * still speaking,

Judas came, (being one of the twelve),

and with him, a large crowd, with swords and clubs,

from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.

{Mar 14:44}(Now the one delivering/betraying Him had given an agreed signal to them, saying "Whom * I kiss, He is the one. Arrest Him and lead [Him] away securely!")

{Mar 14:45}And,

having come [to the garden], having come up to Him immediately,

he said to Him, “Rabbi, Rabbi,” and kissed Him.

{Mar 14:46}And they put their * hands on Him, and took hold of/arrested Him.

{Mar 14:47}But a certain one [Peter] of those who stood by,

having drawn his sword, struck the slave of the high priest, and cut off his * ear.

{Mar 14:48}And,

having answered, * Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs,

as against a robber, to arrest Me?

{Mar 14:49}Day after [day]

I was with you in the temple, teaching, and * you did not arrest Me! But [this has happened]

so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled.”

{Mar 14:50}And,

having left Him, all [the disciples] fled.

{Mar 14:51}Now one certain young man followed Him,

having thrown a linen cloth on [his] naked [body]. And the young men took hold of him, ‘a certain young man’ Church tradition says this was John Mark, who scribed this gospel based on recollections from Peter.

{Mar 14:52}but,

having left the linen cloth, naked,

he fled from them.

{Mar 14:53}And they led away * Jesus to the high priest, and all * chief priests and * elders and * scribes came together to him.

{Mar 14:54}And * Peter followed Him from a distance/far away,

until [he was] inside, in the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with the officers, and warming [himself] beside the fire.

{Mar 14:55}Now the chief priests and all the Sanhedrin were seeking testimony against * Jesus

in order to * put [Him] to death, *, and * they were not finding [testimony].

{Mar 14:56}For many were giving false testimony against Him, but their testimonies were not consistent. consistent' literally 'equal'

{Mar 14:57}And,

having stood up, some were giving false testimony against Him, saying,

{Mar 14:58}* “We heard Him say, * ‘I will destroy this * temple * made by hands, and, within three days, I will build another, not made by hands.”

{Mar 14:59}Indeed, their * testimony was not even consistent in this way.

{Mar 14:60}And,

having stood up in the midst [of them], the high priest asked/questioned * Jesus, saying, “* Do You not answer anything which these men are testifying against You?”

{Mar 14:61}But He kept silent, and answered nothing. Again, the high priest was asking/questioning Him, and saying to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed [One]?”

{Mar 14:62}And * Jesus said, “I AM. And you will see THE SON * OF MAN

SITTING AT THE RIGHT [HAND] OF THE POWER, and COMING WITH THE CLOUDS * OF HEAVEN.”

‘I AM’ is the name of Jehovah (Exod 3:14)The quotation is about the Christ/Messiah coming at the Second Advent. It is one of the signs of His coming in Mark 13:26.This testimony of Jesus is either true (He is the Christ) or it is blasphemy – there is no middle ground. He is not ‘just a good man, who taught good moral principles’. He is either the Christ, or He is a blasphemous, lying, deceiver.

{Mar 14:63}And,

having torn his * tunic/under garment, the high priest said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? Parallel (Matt 26:63-66)‘tore his clothes’ Normally, someone tore their clothes (and sat in ashes) as a sign of mourning, distress, offense. In the Levitical priesthood, the high priest wore the ‘golden robes’ (a symbol of the glory of God), and therefore was not allowed to tear his clothes (Lev 6:10, 21:10), not even accidentally (Exod 28:31-32). The fact that Caiaphas tore his robes may be symbolic that the old priesthood (of Levi) had now finished, and the priesthood (according to the order of Melchizedek) was now in force. Jesus, the new High Priest, was about the offer His body as the true Sacrifice. It is interesting to note that Jesus’ clothes/robe was not torn by the Roman soldiers (John 19:24).

{Mar 14:64}You have heard the blasphemy! What does it appear to you? And they all condemned Him to be deserving/worthy of death.

{Mar 14:65}And some began to spit on Him, and to blindfold His * face, and to strike/hit [with fists] Him, and to say to Him “Prophesy!” And the officers threw Him with slaps. ‘blindfold … strike/hit … Prophesy!’ They were taunting Him to tell them who hit Him, since He was blindfolded.‘threw' textual variation NASB has 'lambano' (took/received)

{Mar 14:66}And,

[while] * Peter was in the courtyard,one of the servant girls of the high priest came down.

{Mar 14:67}And,

having seen * Peter warming [himself], having looked closely at him,

she said, “You also were with * Jesus of Nazareth."

{Mar 14:68}But he denied [it], saying, "* I do not know nor understand what you say!” And he went outside onto the porch, and a rooster crowed.

{Mar 14:69}And,

having seen him, the servant girl

again began to say to those present *, “This man is [one] of them!"

{Mar 14:70}But

again, he denied [it]. And,

after a little while, again,

those present began to say * to Peter, "Truly, you are [one] of them, because you are also a Galilean, and your * accent/dialect is like [theirs]!"

NASB and NET omit last clause

{Mar 14:71}And he began to curse and to swear with an oath *, "* I do not know this * Man [of] whom you speak!”

{Mar 14:72}And a rooster crowed for the second [time]. And * Peter remembered the word which * Jesus had said to him *,

“Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times”. And,

having been seized [with emotion], he began to weep bitterly. NASB and NET add ‘Immediately … a rooster crowed’having been seized' is literally 'to throw upon'. NKJV has 'having thought about it' (in the sense of 'having put his mind to it'). NASB omits it. NET has 'he broke down'

{Mar 15:1}Now,

immediately in * early morning [before dawn], having made a plan/counsel,

the chief priests, with the elders and scribes and all the Sanhedrin, having tied * Jesus,

led [Him] away, and delivered [Him] over * to Pilate. ‘early morning’ According to Jewish law, it was illegal to hold a trial by night.

{Mar 15:2}And * Pilate asked Him, “Are You the king of the Jews?" And

having answered, He said to him, “You say [this]."

{Mar 15:3}And the chief priests were accusing Him [of] many things. NKJV adds ‘but He answered nothing’‘many things’ NASB and NET have harshly/repeatedly

{Mar 15:4}And * Pilate again asked Him, saying, “* Do You not answer anything? See how many things they testify against You!"

{Mar 15:5}But * Jesus no longer answered anything,

so that * Pilate [was] amazed.

{Mar 15:6}Now,

at [the] feast, he [usually] released one prisoner for them,

whomever they requested.

{Mar 15:7}And the one called Barabbas was imprisoned,

with his fellow rebels, who had committed murder in the rebellion.

{Mar 15:8}And,

having cried out, the crowd began to ask [him] [to do]

just as * He [usually] did for them.

{Mar 15:9}Now * Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?"

{Mar 15:10}(Because he knew that the chief priests * had delivered [Him] over

because of envy.)

{Mar 15:11}But the chief priests stirred up the crowd

so that he would release * Barabbas for them instead.

{Mar 15:12}But

having answered, * Pilate again said to them, “Then what do you want [that] I should do [with Him] whom you call [the] king of the Jews?"

{Mar 15:13}And they again cried out, “Crucify Him!”

{Mar 15:14}And * Pilate was saying to them, “Why? What evil has He done?” But they cried out more and more, “Crucify Him!”

wanting to do what satisfied the crowd, * Pilate released * Barabbas for them, and,

having scourged * Jesus, delivered [Him] over,

so that He would be crucified. ‘scourged’ is a severe whipping, with a whip with pieces of embedded bone, metal and glass

{Mar 15:16}And the soldiers * led [Him] away into the courtyard, (that is, the Praetorium/governor’s palace), and they called together all the cohort [of Roman soldiers]. They took Him to a courtyard (surrounded by a wall) within Pilate’s palace, having barracks for elite Roman soldiers (the Praetorium/Governor’s Guard)

{Mar 15:17}And they clothed Him [in a] purple [robe], and,

having twisted/braided a thorny crown, put [it] on Him, ‘purple’ is the colour worn by kings

{Mar 15:18}and began to salute Him, “Hail [Salute]! * king of the Jews!”

{Mar 15:19}And they were beating His * head with a reed, and they were spitting on Him, and,

placing the knee [kneeling down], they were paying homage/worshipping Him. ‘worshipping’ is literally ‘to kiss the hand’, but means ‘to fall to the knees and bow the head to the ground as an act of homage (to a king) or worship (to a god)

{Mar 15:20}And,

when they had mocked Him, they took the purple [robe] [off] Him, and put His own * clothes [on] Him. And they led Him [out],

so that they might crucify Him.

{Mar 15:21}And they forced a certain man,

[as he was] passing by, coming from [the] countryside, Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry His * cross.

{Mar 15:22}And they brought Him to [the] place [called] Golgotha

(which is translated “Place of a Skull”).

{Mar 15:23}And they gave Him wine mixed with myrrh to drink, but He * did not take [it]. This is a sedative, to ease the pain

{Mar 15:24}And,

having crucified Him, they divided His * clothes,

having cast a lot for them, [to decide] who should take what.

{Mar 15:25}Now it was [the] third hour, and/when they crucified Him. ‘third hour’ is 9am. This is the time the morning sacrifice was being offered in the Temple. Jesus died at 3pm, which is the time the evening sacrifice was offered.

{Mar 15:26}And the inscription of the charge against Him was written, "THE KING OF THE JEWS."

{Mar 15:27}And,

with Him, they crucified two robbers, one on [His] right and one on His left,

{Mar 15:28}and, the Scripture, was fulfilled, the one saying, "AND HE WAS NUMBERED/COUNTED WITH TRANSGRESSORS/LAWLESS MEN." NET omits this verse

{Mar 15:29}And those passing by were reviling/insulting Him,

wagging/shaking their * heads, and saying, “Aha! He who destroys the temple and builds [it] in three days, NKJV, NASB and NET have ‘You who…’

{Mar 15:30}save Yourself, and come down from the cross!”

{Mar 15:31}In the same way also, mocking [Him] among themselves,

the chief priests, with the scribes, were saying, “He saved others; * He is not able to save Himself!

{Mar 15:32}[Let] the Christ/Messiah, the king * of Israel, come down now from the cross,

so that we may see and believe Him!” Even those who had been crucified with Him were insulting/reviling Him. ‘believe’ This is the gospel – believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God (John 20:31)

{Mar 15:33}And,

[the] sixth hour having come, darkness came over all the land,

until [the] ninth hour. ‘sixth hour’ 12 noon‘darkness’ Everything was totally dark, so that the world could not see the shame of Jesus being judged for sins‘ninth hour’ 3pm When the judgement of all sins had been completed, the work of salvation having been finished, Jesus gave up His spirit and died.

{Mar 15:34}And,

at the ninth * hour, * Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying “ELOI, ELOI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?”

(which is translated, “MY * GOD, MY * GOD, * WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?”) why?' is literally 'for what'

{Mar 15:35}And,

having heard [it], some of those present said “Look/Behold, He is calling Elijah!” ‘Elijah’ In Aramaic, Eloi (God) sounds similar to Elijah

{Mar 15:36}Now,

having run, and having filled a sponge with sour wine/vinegar,

and having put [it] on a reed, one man * gave [it to Him] to drink, saying, "Leave [Him alone]! We should see if Elijah comes to take Him [down].”

{Mar 15:37}But,

having let go a loud cry/voice/sound, * Jesus breathed out [and died].

{Mar 15:38}And the curtain/veil of the temple was torn in two,

from top to bottom.

{Mar 15:39}And the centurion,

who had been present in front of/opposite from Him, having seen that,

having cried out like this, He breathed out [and died],

said, “Truly this * Man was [the] Son of God!"

{Mar 15:40}And there were also women watching from a distance,

among whom also were Mary * Magdalene, and Mary the mother * of James the Less and of Joses, and Salome,

{Mar 15:41}who also were following Him, and were serving/ministering to Him,

when He was in * Galilee, and many other women,

those having gone with Him to Jerusalem.

{Mar 15:42}And,

already having become evening, because it was the day of preparation

(that is, the day before the Sabbath),

{Mar 15:43}* Joseph of Arimathea,

a prominent member of the Sanhedrin, who was himself also looking forward to the kingdom * of God,

came, having boldness/no fear,

went to Pilate, and asked for the body * of Jesus.

{Mar 15:44}And * Pilate wondered if * He had already died, and,

having called the centurion, he asked him if He had died earlier.

{Mar 15:45}And,

having known from the centurion, he gave the body * to Joseph. ‘gave’ this is the word used ‘to present a gift/offering/sacrifice’

{Mar 15:46}And,

having bought a linen cloth, and having taken Him,

he wrapped [Him] in the linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb

which was cut from a large rock. And he rolled a stone over the entrance of the tomb.

{Mar 15:47}Now * Mary * Magdalene and Mary [the mother] of Joses were watching where He was laid.

{Mar 16:1}And,

the Sabbath having passed [finished], Mary * Magdalene, and Mary the [mother] * of James, and Salome bought fragrant spices,

so that, having come,

they might anoint Him. The Sabbath finished on Saturday evening, about 6pm. This is when they bought the spices, but, being now dark, they had to wait until Sunday morning before they could go to the tomb.

{Mar 16:2}And

very early in the morning, on the first [day] of the week,

they came to the tomb, the sun having risen.

‘first day of the week’ is Sunday

{Mar 16:3}And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?”

{Mar 16:4}And,

having looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away,

because it was very large.

{Mar 16:5}And,

having entered into the tomb, they saw a young man,

clothed [in a] dazzling white robe, sitting on the right [side],

and they were terrified.

{Mar 16:6}But he said to them, “* Do not be terrified! You are seeking Jesus, the Nazarene,

the one having been crucified. He has been raised! He is not here! See the place where they laid Him!

{Mar 16:7}But go, tell His * disciples -- and * Peter -- that He is going before you into * Galilee. You will see Him there,

just as He told you.” ‘and Peter’ Peter is singled out to reaffirm him. The last we heard of Peter is when he denied Jesus three times. His soul is shattered, and he would be very discouraged.

{Mar 16:8}And,

having gone out,

they fled from the tomb. But, fear/trembling and bewilderment/amazement was holding/gripping them, and they said nothing to anyone,

because they were afraid. ‘bewilderment/amazement’ This is the word ‘ecstatics’. It means ‘to be thrown out of your normal state of mind’. It is used of amazement and insanity.

There is some doubt whether the rest of this chapter was in the original Greek. Many ancient manuscripts (including those used by NASB and NET) do not have Mark 16:9-20.{Mar 16:9}Now,

having risen, He appeared,

early in the morning [on the] first [day] of the week, first to Mary * Magdalene,

from whom He had cast out seven demons.

{Mar 16:10}Having gone,

she told those men who had been with Him, [while they were] mourning and weeping.

‘those men who had been with Him’ is the eleven disciples

{Mar 16:11}And those men,

having heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe.

{Mar 16:12}And,

after these, He appeared,

in another form/external appearance, to two of them,

[while they were] walking, going on a journey into [the] countryside. This is on the road to Emmaus.

{Mar 16:13}And these,

having gone, told the rest, but they did not believe them. ‘the rest’ In context, this is ‘the eleven’

{Mar 16:14}Later, He appeared to the eleven,

[as they were] * reclining at table, and He rebuked their * unbelief and hardness of heart,

because * they did not believe those who had seen Him [after He] had risen.

{Mar 16:15}And He said to them,

"Having gone into all the world, preach the gospel to all * creation. ‘all creation’ The good news is that all creation – mankind, animals, plants, the earth itself – will be set free from the curse of sin

{Mar 16:16}The one having believed and having been baptized will be saved, but the one having not believed will be condemned.

{Mar 16:17}And these signs will accompany/follow those having believed --

In My * name,

they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; ‘accompany/follow’ is the same word for ‘disciple’‘in My name’ can link to ‘having believed in My name’ or ‘In My name, they will…’

{Mar 16:18}they will pick up snakes;

even if they drink anything deadly [poison], * * it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on [the] sick, and they will get well.”

{Mar 16:19}Then,

truly, after He spoke to them,

the Lord was taken up into * heaven, and sat down at [the] right [hand] * of God.

{Mar 16:20}And,

having gone out, they preached everywhere,

the Lord working together [with them] and confirming the word, through the accompanying signs.
