{Mar 1:16}And

walking beside the Sea * of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew, * Simon’s * * brother,

casting a net into the sea, because they were fishermen.

{Mar 1:17}And * Jesus said to them, "Come here/now, [follow] behind Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” {Mar 1:18}And

immediately, leaving their * nets,

they followed Him. {Mar 1:19}And

going on a little from there, He saw * James, the [son] of Zebedee, and John, his * brother, and they [were] in the boat mending their nets. {Mar 1:20}And

immediately He called them,

and having left their * father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and they followed after Him. {Mar 1:21}And they went into Capernaum, and

immediately on the Sabbath, having come into the synagogue,

He began to teach. {Mar 1:22}And they were amazed at His * teaching,

because He was teaching them like [one] having authority, and not like the scribes.

{Mar 1:23}Now there was a man in their * synagogue with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, {Mar 1:24}

saying, "Leave us alone! What [is there] with us and with You, Jesus of Nazareth? [Have] you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One * of God!”

{Mar 1:25}And * Jesus rebuked him,

saying, “Be quiet! And come out of him!” {Mar 1:26}And

[after] having convulsed him, the unclean * spirit,

also having cried out with a loud voice, came out of him. {Mar 1:27}And * they were all amazed,

so that [they began] to discuss/investigate among themselves, saying, “What is this? What * new * teaching [is] this?

Because with authority, He commands even the unclean * spirits, and they obey Him.”

immediately went out into all the region around * Galilee. {Mar 1:29}And

having a fever, and

immediately they told Him about her. {Mar 1:31}And

having compassion, having stretched out His * hand,

touched Him, and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed!” {Mar 1:42}And

[after] having spoken, immediately

his * leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed. {Mar 1:43}And

having sternly warned him, immediately

having perceived in His * spirit that they were reasoning like this within themselves, said to them, “Why are you reasoning these things in your * hearts? {Mar 2:9}Which is easier to say to the paralytic, ‘Your * sins have been forgiven,’ or to say ‘Get up, and take up your * stretcher, and walk’? {Mar 2:10}But

sitting at the tax desk, and He said to him, “Follow me!” And

[while] He [was] reclining [eating a meal] in his * house, many tax collectors and sinners also were reclining [eating] with * Jesus and His * disciples,

having seen Him eating with * tax collectors and sinners, also were saying to His disciples, “How [is it] that He eats and drinks with * tax collectors and sinners?” {Mar 2:17}And * Jesus

having heard, said to them, “Those being healthy have no need of a physician, but those having sick[ness]. * I did not come to call [the] righteous, but sinners, to repentance.” {Mar 2:18}Now the disciples of John and those of the Pharisees were fasting, and they came and said to Him, “* Why [do] the disciples of John and those of the Pharisees fast, but your * disciples * do not fast?”

{Mar 2:19}And * Jesus said to them, “The guests of the wedding hall * cannot fast

when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and

then, in those * days, they will fast.

{Mar 2:21}Now no one sews a patch of new/unshrunken cloth on an old garment. that which must be put.” {Mar 2:23}Now it happened [that] He was passing through the grain fields on the Sabbath, and His * disciples began to make [their] way,

[while] plucking the heads of grain. {Mar 2:24}And the Pharisees said to Him, “Look! Why are they doing what is not lawful/permitted on the Sabbath?” {Mar 2:25}And He said to them, “* Have you never read what David did,

when he had need, and was hungry, he and those with him,

{Mar 2:26}how he entered into the house * of God

at [the time] of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the Bread of the Presence,

which * is not lawful/permitted to eat (* except by those priests)

and * he also gave [it] to those being with him?” {Mar 2:27}And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for * man, [and] not * man for the Sabbath. {Mar 2:28}Therefore, the Son * of Man is Lord, even of the Sabbath.” {Mar 3:1}And He entered into the synagogue again, and a man having a withered hand was there. {Mar 3:2}And they were watching Him closely *

whenever they saw Him, were falling down before Him, and were crying out, saying, * “You are the Son * of God!” {Mar 3:12}And He was rebuking them sternly that [they should] not make Him known. {Mar 3:13}And He went up on the mountain, and called those whom He Himself wanted, and they came to Him. {Mar 3:14}And He appointed twelve,

HEARING, THEY MAY HEAR BUT NOT UNDERSTAND,

and they have no root in themselves, but are temporary.

After affliction or persecution comes because of the word, immediately

they are made to stumble. {Mar 4:18}And these are the ones sown among the thorny plants,

who hear the word, {Mar 4:19}

and the cares/worries of this * world and the deceitfulness * of riches and the lusts/desires for the remaining [other] things, coming in,

choke the word and it becomes unfruitful/unproductive. {Mar 4:20}But these are the ones sown on the good * earth/soil,

who hear the word, and receive [it] and bear fruit,

with thirty, and with sixty, and with a hundred [fruits/grains.”] {Mar 4:21}And He said to them, "* [A] lamp * is not brought

so that it may be put under * [a] basket or under * [a] bed, [is it?] [Is it] not [brought]

so that it may be put on * [a] lampstand? {Mar 4:22}For * nothing * is hidden

If anyone has ears to hear [and understand], let him hear [and understand]!” {Mar 4:24}And He said to them, “Be careful what you hear [and understand]!

By [the] measure by which you measure, it will be measured to you, and

to you who hear [and understand], [more] will be added. {Mar 4:25}For

whoever * has, [more] will be given to him, but

whoever * does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.” {Mar 4:26}And He said, “The kingdom * of God is like this: as if a man scatters * seed on the ground. {Mar 4:27}and he sleeps and is woken, night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows -- he himself * does not know how. {Mar 4:28}For

by itself the earth/soil bears grain/fruit: first, [the] grass; then, [the] head [of grain]; then, [the] full grain in the head. {Mar 4:29}But

when the fruit/grain delivers [ripens], immediately

he sends in the sickle because the harvest has come.”

{Mar 4:30}And He said, “To what might we liken the kingdom * of God, or by what kind of parable might we compare it? {Mar 4:31}[It is] like a mustard seed

which, when it is sown on the earth/soil,

is [the] smallest of all the seeds that [are] on the earth/soil, {Mar 4:32}but

when it is sown it grows up and becomes [the] largest of all the garden plants, and makes large branches,

so that THE BIRDS OF THE SKY can NEST UNDER ITS * SHADE.” {Mar 4:33}And

with many parables such as these He was speaking the word to them,

according to [what] they were able to hear [and understand], {Mar 4:34}and

without a parable, * He was not speaking to them. But

in private He was explaining everything to His own * disciples.

on that * day, [when] evening having come,

He said to them, “Let us cross across to the other side [of the sea].” {Mar 4:36}And,

just as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. {Mar 4:37}And a great storm/ violent whirlwind of wind developed, and the waves were breaking into the boat,

who had his dwelling among the tombs. And no one was able to bind him, not even with chains, {Mar 5:4}

because * he often had been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him, and the shackles had been broken in pieces.

And no one was strong [enough] to restrain him. {Mar 5:5}And

during every night and day, in the mountains and among the tombs,

he was crying out and cutting himself with stones. {Mar 5:6}And

See previous verse.‘give in exchange’ Those who are truly disciples, and follow Jesus in suffering and death ‘for His sake’, will be rewarded with great glory (ruling the kingdom with Him) in eternity. Jesus is asking ‘Are you prepared to give up your life for Me, in exchange for this glory?’

{Mar 8:38}For

whoever * is ashamed of Me and My * words in this * adulterous and sinful * generation,

the Son * of Man also will be ashamed of him, when He comes

in the glory of His * Father with the holy * angels.

‘is ashamed of Me’ is equivalent to ‘not being prepared to suffer and die for Him’, in context. This is not ‘loss of salvation’.‘glory’ Because Jesus is faithful, He will be rewarded with honour and glory (especially to sit at the right hand of the Father, and to rule His kingdom). The following verses show how Jesus will be glorified when He comes again at the Second Advent, to establish the kingdom.

{Mar 9:1}And He was saying to them, “Truly I say to you *, there are some of those standing here who * * will by no means taste death

until * they see the kingdom * of God has come with power.” This verse is fulfilled in the next few verses. Three disciples 'see' Jesus in His glory, as He will be in the kingdom.

does restore all things. But, how is it written concerning the Son * of Man, that He should suffer many things and be despised/treated with contempt? Jesus is showing the disciples that there must be two advents. How can it be that Elijah comes to restore the hearts of the people to God before the Messiah comes, but then the people reject the Messiah? In the First Advent, the Jesus came to die for sin, and Israel rejected Him. Prior to the Second Advent, Elijah will bring Israel to repentance, then Jesus will come again to establish the kingdom.

{Mar 9:13}But I say to you that Elijah indeed has come, and they did to him whatever they wanted,

just as it is written about him.” ‘Elijah’ John the Baptist was a type of Elijah. John came as the herald of the First Advent; Elijah (and probably Moses, as the two witnesses) will come as the herald for the Second Advent.

{Mar 9:14}Now,

having come to the disciples, He saw a large crowd around them, and scribes discussing/arguing with them. ‘having come’ Jesus and the three have just returned from the Mount of Transfiguration, and see the other disciples, who were waiting for them.

all the crowd was amazed, and,

running to [Him], were greeting/welcoming Him.

{Mar 9:16}And He asked the scribes, “What are you discussing/arguing with them?”

Jesus is asking the man, “Do you really believe that I can heal him?” But instead of ‘anything’, Jesus adds ‘all things are possible’‘possible’ is the same root word as ‘can’ (able, strong, powerful).

the father of the child was saying “I believe! Lord, help my * unbelief!”

having been tied to the door, outside in the street,

and they untied it.

From now on, Jesus argues with the religious leaders, talks in parables, and warns Israel of judgement, including the Tribulation (Mark 13), culminating in 'learn the parable of the fig tree' in Mark 13:28.If fig trees have leaves, they will have small figs that are going to mature. This fig tree did not have anything. It is a sign that Israel is not going to produce any fruit (in the near future), therefore it is useless and will be destroyed.

[as they were] * reclining and eating, * Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, that one of you -- he who eats with Me -- will deliver/betray Me."

‘I AM’ is the name of Jehovah (Exod 3:14)The quotation is about the Christ/Messiah coming at the Second Advent. It is one of the signs of His coming in Mark 13:26.This testimony of Jesus is either true (He is the Christ) or it is blasphemy – there is no middle ground. He is not ‘just a good man, who taught good moral principles’. He is either the Christ, or He is a blasphemous, lying, deceiver.

{Mar 14:63}And,

having torn his * tunic/under garment, the high priest said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? Parallel (Matt 26:63-66)‘tore his clothes’ Normally, someone tore their clothes (and sat in ashes) as a sign of mourning, distress, offense. In the Levitical priesthood, the high priest wore the ‘golden robes’ (a symbol of the glory of God), and therefore was not allowed to tear his clothes (Lev 6:10, 21:10), not even accidentally (Exod 28:31-32). The fact that Caiaphas tore his robes may be symbolic that the old priesthood (of Levi) had now finished, and the priesthood (according to the order of Melchizedek) was now in force. Jesus, the new High Priest, was about the offer His body as the true Sacrifice. It is interesting to note that Jesus’ clothes/robe was not torn by the Roman soldiers (John 19:24).

{Mar 14:64}You have heard the blasphemy! What does it appear to you? And they all condemned Him to be deserving/worthy of death.

{Mar 14:65}And some began to spit on Him, and to blindfold His * face, and to strike/hit [with fists] Him, and to say to Him “Prophesy!” And the officers threw Him with slaps. ‘blindfold … strike/hit … Prophesy!’ They were taunting Him to tell them who hit Him, since He was blindfolded.‘threw' textual variation NASB has 'lambano' (took/received)

{Mar 14:66}And,

‘first day of the week’ is Sunday

{Mar 16:3}And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?”

having looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away,

because it was very large.

{Mar 16:5}And,

having entered into the tomb, they saw a young man,

clothed [in a] dazzling white robe, sitting on the right [side],

and they were terrified.

just as He told you.” ‘and Peter’ Peter is singled out to reaffirm him. The last we heard of Peter is when he denied Jesus three times. His soul is shattered, and he would be very discouraged.

they fled from the tomb. But, fear/trembling and bewilderment/amazement was holding/gripping them, and they said nothing to anyone,

because they were afraid. ‘bewilderment/amazement’ This is the word ‘ecstatics’. It means ‘to be thrown out of your normal state of mind’. It is used of amazement and insanity.

There is some doubt whether the rest of this chapter was in the original Greek. Many ancient manuscripts (including those used by NASB and NET) do not have Mark 16:9-20.{Mar 16:9}Now,

having risen, He appeared,

early in the morning [on the] first [day] of the week, first to Mary * Magdalene,

from whom He had cast out seven demons.

{Mar 16:10}Having gone,

she told those men who had been with Him, [while they were] mourning and weeping.

‘those men who had been with Him’ is the eleven disciples

{Mar 16:11}And those men,

having heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe.

{Mar 16:12}And,

after these, He appeared,

in another form/external appearance, to two of them,

[while they were] walking, going on a journey into [the] countryside. This is on the road to Emmaus.
