Directions: Use the provided readings for Part 1 of Act III (scenes 1-3) to respond to the questions/prompts on this handout. Be careful to provide textual evidence where needed.

Act III, scene 1 (THIS IS A BIG TURNING POINT!) – (Day 2: Afternoon) The scene opens with Benvolio and Mercutio hanging out on a hot day in the town square. Benvolio is worried they will run into the Capulets resulting in trouble. Mercutio, on the other hand, doesn’t care and isn’t worried about the Capulets. So, of course, the Capulets show up.

Tybalt is looking for Romeo. Just as he is about to leave the town square, Romeo shows up. REMEMBER: Romeo just came from his secret wedding ceremony to Juliet that morning. Tybalt insults Romeo; Romeo tries to calm the situation as Tybalt is now his cousin-in-law. Mercutio can’t stand that Romeo is just taking the insults and steps in to fight Tybalt. The two fight while Romeo tries to break them apart. In trying to break them apart, Romeo gets in the way and Tybalt accidentally stabs Mercutio. Mercutio dies – gasp! In a fit of rage, Romeo fights Tybalt to avenge Mercutio’s death. Romeo kills Tybalt – double gasps!

Romeo’s friends send him away before the guards come – REMEMBER: The Prince vowed to sentence to death anyone caught fighting. Dun-dun-duuuuuun!

The Capulets and Montagues show up just as the Prince and guards do. Benvolio tells what happens. The Capulets don’t believe him. The Montagues say sentence has been rendered since Tybalt’s death would have been a given after killing Mercutio. All is even. The Prince says Romeo still must be punished, so Romeo is banished from Verona. The horror!

Act III, scene 2 – (Day 2: Late afternoon) Juliet is waiting in her bedchamber. The plan was for Romeo to sneak in that night for their honeymoon. The nurse shows up distraught and tells Juliet of Tybalt’s death at Romeo’s hand. Poor Juliet is confused – angry that Romeo killed Tybalt and yet realizing if Tybalt was alive Romeo HER HUSBAND would be dead. She weeps and the nurse tells her she will go find Romeo to come comfort her.

Act III, scene 3 (Day 2: Evening) – Read through scene 3. In the margins, you will find reading questions. Answer questions on a separate document – complete sentences – and submit to Turn It In. Note that the text on the left is Shakespeare’s original text and the text on the right is No Fear’s “translation” of the lines.

Romeo & Juliet: Character SketchPractice #1: Act 3, Scene 3

Obstacles:

Because Romeo killed Tybalt, he’s been banished from Verona, so he can’t stay with Juliet. If he’s found in the city limits of Verona, he’ll be sentenced to death.

“[Romeo:] What less than doomsday is the Prince’s doom? [Friar]: A gentler judgement vanished from his lips.: not body’s death, but body’s banishment” (9-11).

In the friar’s eyes, Romeo has received a lucky break from the prince. Although he should have been sentenced to death for killing Tybalt (like the Prince said in Act 1, Scene 1), the prince has given him a “gentler” punishment, because Tybalt would have been sentenced to death anyway for killing Mercutio. However, even with this lighter punishment, it still takes Romeo away from Juliet, and he can’t see her, because their marriage is

Desires:

Romeo just wants to be with his new wife, Juliet.

“Heaven is here, where Juliet lives, and every cat and dog and little mouse, every unworthy thing, live here in heaven and may look on her, by Romeo may not” (29-33).

He calls Verona heaven, because it’s where Juliet lives. He would rather be an animal, who has the freedom to stay and be with Juliet, than be banished.

Thoughts:

Romeo thinks that death is better than banishment.

“Ha, banishment! Be merciful, say ‘death,’ for exile hath more terror in his look, much more than death. Do no say ‘banishment’” (12-14).

Actions:

Romeo is going to visit Juliet tonight to have their wedding night. Then, he will go to the neighboring town of Mantua to live out his banishment, while the Friar stays behind and tries to get things sorted out so that Romeo can return.

Romeo needs to be patient. He can visit Juliet tonight, but needs to make sure he leaves in the morning without anyone seeing him. Then, he just needs to wait in Mantua until the friar prepares him for return.
