Dear Parents and Caregivers

The Education Act 1999 requires schools to notify parents of all contributions and charges prior to the start of the school year. These costs are divided into five areas: School Contributions, Extra Cost Options, Student Requirements List and Charges. These costs have been endorsed by the Harmony Primary School’s Independent Public School Board:

1. School Contributions: A voluntary school contribution towards the cost of items used in the educational program provided for your child.

2. Student Requirements List: Items on this list are required for students use in the classroom.

3. Charges for Extra Cost Items: An estimate of the costs of these items is listed for non-compulsory activities. Payment for these items is a condition of participation by students, includes activities such as Graduation, Swimming, Incursions and Excursions.

4. Voluntary Additional Requests: Kindy and Pre Primary Cooking, Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program, Cars and Stars, iPad hire etc.

5. Other Services: Leaver shirts and school/student photos.

1. School Contributions

Our School Board have endorsed the amount of $60.00 per student as a School Contribution for 2021. This equates to approximately $1.50 per week. These contributions are voluntary and are used to enhance the teaching and learning opportunities for all students and supplement funding gained from other sources, including the State and Federal Governments. At Harmony Primary School, the School Contributions will be used to purchase supplementary materials and resources used in classrooms in the following areas:

· Literacy: extra reading and library resources

· Numeracy: extra materials for mathematics

· Cooperative Learning: funding will be directed to provide specific resources, charts etc that will enable teachers to teach students the skills needed to work collaboratively and cooperatively

· Student Self-Esteem: funding for reward programs for students who are constantly being responsible and making appropriate choices

· Visual Arts: craft, art supplies

· Music/Physical Education: equipment as needed

· History, Geography and Science Resources

· Information Communication Technology (ICT) Resources

· Library Books

· LOTE (Languages other than English)

· Hygiene items: spare clothing, first aid supplies, Aqium gel and suncreen

2. Student Requirements List

The cost for items on this list will vary from year level to year level. It includes items such as pens, pencils and scrapbooks. Parents may purchase these items from their chosen retailer or use the nominated school supplier Ziggies. The school receives a small commission for each order processed through this company.

You can also pay your School Contribution of $60 per student for 2021 through Ziggies when you order your child’s student requirements. This contribution can also be paid at the School Administration Office or via direct deposit to the Harmony Primary School bank account.

3. Extra Cost Items

This amount can vary from year to year and from class to class. A breakdown of estimated charges for your child’s participation in excursions/incursions and other school activities such as swimming lessons etc. for 2021 has been outlined in the schedule attached. The amounts indicated on the schedule represent the maximum that can be charged for scheduled activities in 2021. Students can only participate if they have parental permission and have paid the charge. This money will be used to fund the following types of activities: visiting performers, excursions, interschool sports carnivals, swimming lessons and other special events as they occur.

The excursions/incursions and other school activities charge can be paid in advance at the beginning of the year and any excursions/incursions or other activities that your child/children attend, will be deducted from this amount. Any credit left in your child’s account at the end of the 2020, will be automatically carried forward into 2021 or refunded if your child is to leave our school. All payments must be received in full by the DUE DATE – unfortunately late payments cannot be accepted. Please note that Direct Deposit’s do take additional time so payments must be made two days prior to Due Date. As of 2021 limited follow up for payments will be made, if you have not paid by the Due Date your child will be unable to attend or participate in the planned activity.

4. Voluntary Additional Requests

This money is used by the school to provide additional opportunities for all students. They include, but are not limited to items such as iPad/Mac Book hire, cooking charges, Mathletics and Cars and Stars.

The Australian Curriculum expects that students learn to use ICT effectively and appropriately to access, create and communicate information and ideas, solve problems and work collaboratively in all learning areas at school. Together, the teachers and School Board have researched current ICT best practice in education, along with Harmony Primary School’s current and future capacity to deliver this. Currently, Kindy to Year 3 students have an average of one hour per day access to iPads, which equals $1.00 per week, Year 4 to 6 participate in a Bring Your Own Device Program. For those students that do not have a personal device, HPS provides each class with a small number of MacBooks. There is a cost associated with using these devices and they are classed as shared items.

DETAILED PROGRAM INFORMATION

CARS & STARS

CARS & STARS is a comprehensive reading program that diagnoses student comprehension and supports teachers in providing levelled instruction according to student needs. The CARS & STARS program plays a major part in reading programs at Harmony Primary School and allows students to receive focused learning to their unique needs. In 2021, all students from Year 3 – 6 will receive a STARS book individualized to their level and access to an online assessment program.

SPELLING PROGRAM – SPELLING MASTERY

Students in Years 3 – 6 attend levelled Spelling Mastery Classes every day from 10.40am – 11.00am.

In just 20 minutes a day, Spelling Mastery can help teach your child the strategies they need to become successful, life-long spellers.

Using a combined approach to phonemic, morphemic and whole-word strategies, Spelling Mastery helps students to understand the relationship between sounds, word parts and spelling patterns. Students are taught in small steps, using sufficient practice, so that they comprehend how spelling works and apply this to become proficient writers.

Year 5 - 6 Health and Well Being Journal

Our school Business Plan is divided into two sections – everybody learns and everybody cares. We have obviously a big emphasis on everybody learns and our school is keen to promote the second part of our plan – everybody cares.

For our Year 5 & 6 students we want to further develop their social and emotional wellbeing and resilience, to help our students become their best possible selves, to live a life that really matters. The journals are set activities in a colourful format that invite home discussion and direct wellbeing classes at school. It ensures that all of our children will have access to a quality wellbeing program.

Included are

· character strengths

· mindfulness

· wellbeing fitness challenges

· wellbeing goal setting

· resilience building

· what went well

iPad PROGRAM

Students at Harmony Primary in Years K - 3 use iPads in the classroom.

All students have access to a variety of apps for consuming and creating content although across the school there are different apps installed for the different year levels using the devices.

The touch screen allows students to engage interactively with content and access learning activities quickly.

Teachers use the iPads with small groups during activity rotations and whole classes for explicit instruction.

This year, the students in Years 1 - 3 have special iPad keyboards to assist them to learn typing skills on the devices.

Some uses of the iPads include:

Nurturing creative storytelling

Book Creator for iPad

Sock Puppets Complete

Comic Life

Engaging students in literacy and numeracy programs

Eggy 250

Starfall ABC’s

Guess-My-Number

Number Frames

iPads are also located in our Art and Music classrooms

Students have access to a number of exciting opportunities in these programs using apps such as:

Garage Band

Superimpose

Parents are asked to contribute the equivalent of 50c per week for Kindergarten students and $1 per week for Pre-Primary to Year 3 towards the lease.

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program

Students in Year 3 & Year 4 are involved in the SAKGP.  This program allows students to discover the pleasures of hands on learning through preparing and sharing fresh, seasonal healthy foods. All lessons are closely linked to learning in the classroom in Numeracy, English, History, Technology and Science. Students develop an appreciation for working in a kitchen environment, aspects such as hygiene, preparing food and reading recipes are covered. Students then get to enjoy what they have produced as part of their class lesson.

The $20 charge will be applied at the beginning of the year, once class structures are in place, and is used supplement products that can’t be grown in the permaculture garden.

MATHLETICS

Mathletics is a supplementary maths program used from Pre Primary through to Year 6 at Harmony Primary School.

Students receive an individual log in and password which remain the same for their entire time at Harmony.  They have access to maths activities, problem solving games, NAPLAN style practice tests and live Mathletics.

Some teachers set Mathletics activities as a part of their homework program, others use it both in the classroom and at home.  Mathletics enables students to consolidate concepts learnt in the classroom through ongoing practise. Students earn points and gold bars within the program, providing motivation to complete the activities. Students who excel are rewarded with certificates at assembly.

The cost of the program includes a full year's access both at home and at school.
