About Westminster College, CambridgeThe Westminster College building opened in October, 1899, to replace the Presbyterian Church of England’s theological college in London. This move was largely inspired, and significantly funded, by twin sisters, Agnes and Margaret Smith. They were remarkable biblical scholars and travelled extensively. Westminster takes its name from the Catechisms and Confession of the Westminster Assembly of Divines which met in London from 1643-1649. The Westminster Confession, Presbyterianism’s foundation creed, is housed at the college. Another strand in our history involves Cheshunt College. Cheshunt’s origins lay in the college opened at Trevecka in Wales in 1768 by the Countess of Huntingdon which played a significant part in the English and Welsh Evangelical Revivals. It moved to Cheshunt in Hertfordshire in 1792 and thence to purpose-built premises on Bateman Street in Cambridge in 1914. In 1967 Cheshunt joined with Westminster and the Cheshunt buildings were sold. Many of the contents and archives of Cheshunt are housed at Westminster.

In 1972 the birth of the United Reformed Church saw Westminster take its place alongside other colleges training ministers for the new denomination. Westminster is now one of the three Resource Centres for Learning serving the URC (the others being Northern College in Manchester and the Scottish College). Our brief continues to evolve and expand as we seek to offer education, training and support to candidates preparing for ordained ministry in the URC and other Reformed churches, lay preachers and worship leaders, elders, ministers in service and a wide variety of individuals, groups and churches who want to explore faith and living with us.

Westminster College is part of the Cambridge Theological Federation (CTF), which represents many Christian traditions and provides a vibrant ecumenical and interfaith context for our work. The CTF works in partnership with the University of Cambridge (for whom it delivers the BTh and DTM - Theology for Ministry - awards), the University of Durham (which validates the BA and MA in Theology, Ministry and Mission) and Anglia Ruskin University (with whom we deliver a Professional Doctorate programme). Staff are often involved in supervision for research degrees of our partner universities. There are about 40 academic staff across the Federation, providing a rich context of colleagueship within which we work.

This is a significant moment in the life of Westminster. Following the decision of the United Reformed Church in 2006 to make the college a Resource Centre for Learning for the whole church, we embarked upon a radical programme of transformation. Further decisions of the General Assembly in 2010 launched a denomination-wide development appeal for Westminster. The building has undergone a £7 million redevelopment providing us with state of the art facilities for delivering learning and events for the whole church. We have also expanded the commercial business capacity of Westminster to help financially support the educational vocation of the college. We are developing as a venue for conferences and events, and provide high quality bed and breakfast accommodation alongside student and church use. We are now regularly used by visiting academics and a wide range of individuals and groups as a venue and overnight stop. Our chapel prayers are deliberately advertised and open to all visitors using our building so that our commitment to Christ remains central to our ethos and hospitality. Westminster stands as a sign of living faith in our diverse and dynamic academic and historic context.

We have seen further dramatic transformation of our site in several significant ways. The central offices of the CTF are now located with us, as are four members of the

Federation: the Woolf Institute of Abrahamic Faiths; the Eastern Region Ministry Course; the Cambridge Centre for Christianity Worldwide and the Faraday Institute for Science and Religion. Along with Westfield House, the Lutheran college very close to Westminster, this makes our location with its varied teaching, learning, library, archival and social facilities a very significant hub for the Federation and for the ecumenical and inter-faith study of theology. We delight in the synergy and potential for encounter these many collaborations already offer. We invite you to share in their rich potential with us.

We are an exciting institution, seeking more fully to help shape thinking about the life of faith and the future of the Church in the 21st century. We want to equip people to minister effectively amidst constant change, and to build up the whole Church as all of its members engage in their many and varied forms of ministry. We are developing particular interests in faith and the arts and spirituality and are seeking to develop an intentional programme of research, in part in conjunction with the CTF, in part in collaboration with wider research networks across the United Reformed Church. The post-holder will become the sixth member of a core academic staff team including the Principal, who will help develop and steer the further exploration of the vocation of the college with the Board of Governors. There will be the opportunity for the post-holder to follow their interests and passions as the future of Westminster is being shaped within its overall vocation. Duties will be spread across the whole calendar year and include some weekend and evening commitments; but it is intended to schedule some dedicated research time for the post-holder.

We continue to develop and expand our teaching staff team. In 2017 we appointed a new Tutor in Church History and Doctrine who will specialise in the Reformed tradition. Alongside this appointment is our Director of Church Resource Development who focusses upon expanding Westminster’s provision of wider learning and nurture for lay people across the URC and beyond. This New Testament post sits alongside our Old Testament position. Both of these appointments are not seen by us as held within the classically and narrowly defined boundaries of Old and New Testament studies. Across both posts we need colleagues who can help excite and educate the wider church in the many dimensions and facets of scripture. Both post-holders will bring complementary specialisms in aspects of the ways scripture shapes and forms the practices of Christian discipleship and church life. These posts complement those of continuing staff who bring particular expertise in Pastoral Theology, and wide experience of ministry and church life as well as interests in the whole range of theological and ecclesial issues. Alongside this core staff team, we are developing a programme of adjunct staff who will bring particular pastoral, ministerial or subject expertise to the life of the college. Westminster is also supported by a highly committed and specialised array of support staff who manage the administrative, domestic and business aspects of college life.

Westminster College provides an exciting and energising context from which to engage in academic practice. Being a partner of the Faculty of Divinity of the University of Cambridge (appropriately qualified staff are normally appointed as Affiliated Lecturers of the Faculty) places us in the midst of a world leading research department of Divinity, with a highly active programme of Senior Research Seminars and guest lectures. Our links with the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Durham connects us to a top-rated research department in the UK which is actively committed to resourcing and furthering research across theological institutions teaching the new ‘Common Award’. Our post graduate teaching through Anglia Ruskin University links us to a creative and forward-thinking university with world leading research.

Westminster College, Cambridge: Teaching Staff Job Description

Position:Tutor in New Testament Language, Literature and Theology (TiNTLLT)

Responsible to: the Principal of Westminster and, through him/her, to the Board of Governors of Westminster College, which itself is responsible to the United Reformed Church General Assembly. The Governors report to General Assembly through the Education and Learning Committee, which is therefore, in practice, the College’s primary avenue of communication with the United Reformed Church.

PreambleThe job description should be understood in the context of the responsibilities of the Board of Governors as they are spelt out in the texts of the General Assembly 1996, which define the governance of Westminster College. These texts are attached. Also attached are key resolutions of the Training Committee agreed by General Assembly in 2005 and 2006. These confirm but reframe the Church’s relationship to the College as one of the United Reformed Church’s Resource Centres for Learning (RCL). Finally, to set this post in context, the 2010 resolutions of General Assembly relating to Westminster’s Development and Appeal are attached which indicate ways in which the college has sought to transform its facilities and expand its provision as an RCL.

Further Particulars:This is a full time central teaching post for Westminster College, the Cambridge Theological Federation and the United Reformed Church.

We are searching for a scholar and teacher with a passion for assisting church and academy in exploring scripture as it shapes the faith, practice and mission of the church. Applicants must be educated to PhD level. We would be particularly interested in applications from individuals whose areas of expertise include any of the following: scriptural and homiletic hermeneutics; the place of scripture in the formation of the early identity, culture and practice of the church in context; the relationship between scripture, liturgy and worship; the relationship between the Old and New Testament texts; or the theological interpretation of scripture. Candidates with other specialisms will be considered. This is one of two full time biblical posts within the college, and whilst having a working knowledge of biblical Hebrew, it is expected that this post-holder would be able to teach New Testament Greek at graduate level, and participate in the biblical teaching of the Cambridge Theological Federation (CTF), including advanced New Testament exegesis modules.

You will belong to a member church of the World Council of Churches and have an understanding of, and sympathy for, the Reformed theological tradition. You will have a passion for the education of the whole Church, and a commitment to the formation of Ministers of Word and Sacraments, Elders, Lay Preachers and local church members. You will want to engage people in study of scripture as much in local churches as in the class room. You will have experience of a diverse

range of ministries within the life of the church, and be fully engaged in aspects of church life yourself. You will be excited at the prospect of sharing deeply in the life and structures of the United Reformed Church and in tune with its ethos of broad theological diversity and openness in ministry and leadership to women and men from all backgrounds. You will relish the opportunity to share in networks of teachers and trainers in the two other URC Resource Centres for Learning (RCLs) and across our 13 Synods as they embrace England, Wales and Scotland. You will want to play an energetic part in fostering the United Reformed Church’s stated desire to be a learning church in which all are encouraged to grow in depth and confidence in their faith and service (see General Assembly resolutions from the Education and Learning Committee, 2006, contained in this application material). You will be engaged in active research, and play a significant part in developing and executing plans for research within Westminster College in its service to the United Reformed Church and within the CTF.

Working as part of a small academic staff team with your five full-time colleagues at Westminster, and with further colleagues across the CTF and within our partner universities, you will also carry pastoral and administrative responsibilities for the good running of these institutions. You will share with colleagues in the oversight and formation of students at Westminster as they prepare for service (ordained and lay) in the United Reformed Church and beyond. You are likely to have particular tutorial responsibility for a small group of Westminster’s students. You will be open to sharing in other duties as necessary, such as becoming Director of Studies or Academic Librarian.

Terms and Conditions:This is a post of the General Assembly of the United Reformed Church. It is open to ordained ministers and to lay people.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check: This appointment is subject to a satisfactory enhanced DBS check.

Remuneration:

For a ministerial appointment remuneration will be by stipend according to the Plan for Partnership in Ministerial Remuneration of the United Reformed Church.

A lay appointment will join the United Reformed Church pay scale at a point comparable to a similar appointment at lecturer level within the University of Cambridge, based upon the UK higher education employers’ agreed scales. The starting salary will be between £39,992 and £50,618 per year, depending upon experience.

Probationary Period: The successful applicant will be reviewed in this post after her/his first

complete academic year (i.e. in summer, 2020).

Accommodation: A personal study and car parking are provided at Westminster College. Housing will not be provided for a lay appointment, although some college

rental accommodation may be available. Appropriate housing will be provided for a ministerial appointment.
