Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 1, 2018 You changed my mourning into dancing; O LORD, my God, forever will I give you thanks. — Psalm 30:13 O LORD, BE MY HELP Today we encounter readings that draw us into the mystery of suffering and death. In the past few years we have witnessed the devastation of life and property through earthquakes and hurricanes. So many lifted their lament to God, simply asking, “Why?” This is an honest expression of anger toward a God who we believe is the giver of life. When we lose a loved one, we can wonder why the presence of Christ is not enough to make that person rise, even from death, as did the little girl in today’s Gospel passage. Again we raise our voices and ask, “Why?” At moments such as these, let us make the prayer of the psalmist our own: “Hear, O LORD, and have pity on me; O LORD, be my helper.” Let us pray that our mourning will one day be turned into dancing. Question of the Week How does knowing that God is the God of life, not death, affect the way I live my life? Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary TimeJuly 1, 2018

You changed my mourning into dancing;O LORD, my God, forever will I

give you thanks.— Psalm 30:13

O LORD, BE MY HELPToday we encounter readings that draw us into the mystery of suffering and death.

Question of the WeekHow does knowing that God is the God of life, not

death, affect the way I live my life? Am I courageous enough to stand up to those who do not respect the

basic human right to life?

FOUNDATION

The will of the people is the only legitimate foundation of any government, and to protect its free expression should be our first object.

Pastor’s Note 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time Yr. B

July 1, 2018

Our government makes and enacts laws specially our Supreme Court that speaks with higher authority. One example is that our government considers it perfectly legal and ethical to destroy for any reason the life of an unborn child, while we hold to a higher law that says “Thou shalt not kill.” I am just an ordinary priest who knows little about theology and psychology and I feel not prepared like some of media personalities, TV news anchors to come out with a profound statement until I get information. It makes it very difficult for me to digest the ramifications and implications of these laws and many others like the immigration issues that conflict with the morals and values the Lord Jesus taught us. Last Sunday’s gospel we heard about the calming of the storms on the Sea of Galilee. Just when He landed in Capernaum, he was immediately approached by the leader of the local synagogue whose 12 year old daughter was dying. As Jesus was on His way to the house of the synagogue leader to heal her, he was met by another woman who had suffered for 18 years with a bleeding problem. One thing we see that these two miracles have in common is the power and importance of faith. He tells the woman her faith has saved her and he tells the father of the 12 year old: “do not be afraid, just have faith.” Our faith totally depends on the will of God. Our response should be total submission to that will. If He wants, we can be healed. God bless you.

Arnold Helping HandsWe want to thank many parishioners who generously contribute their time, talent and treasure to Our Lady of the Sierra Helping Hands program. We are open every Tuesday (weather permitting) 9:30am to 10:00am. We serve several homeless individuals, many families, and seniors from our food pantry. We also have a closet with clothes for infants, children of all sizes and adults (men and women) of all sizes. We gratefully accept donations of non-perishable foods (especially cereal and peanut butter), personal items, and cleaning products.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONIt’s midsummer day! We have the advantage of

celebrating one of the great hidden treasures of our liturgical calendar on a Sunday this year. There are only three “nativity” feasts on our calendar: for the Lord, the Blessed Mother (September 8), and today’s birth of the Baptist. Today’s date is anchored by the Annunciation (March 25), when Mary learns not only of her own child’s advent, but of Elizabeth’s child. We are exactly half a year away from Christmas Eve. There are strong traditions around this feast. Just as the winter solstice provides a rich vocabulary for Christmas, so does the abundance of light at midsummer inform this celebration. Just as at Christmas, a religious festival spills over into culture. As summer light reaches its peak, the sun-drenched zones of northern Europe see people staying up all night, lighting “St. John’s fires” in the long summer twilight. Bonfires seem to be the unifying force in all these celebrations, kindled along the shores of the St. Lawrence in Quebec and Montreal, with harbor illuminations in France. You may be most interested in the custom in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Baptist’s own city. People there will leap into the sea between midnight and dawn to honor John. Why not find your way to a pool, a lake, or a sandy beach today and plunge in to recall your baptism? It’s a tradition!

Adoration of the Blessed SacramentEvery Friday 8:30am - 4:00pm

Evening Prayer/Benediction 4:00 p.m.

"Our communal worship at Mass must go together with our personal

worship of Jesus in Eucharistic adoration

in order that our love may be complete." St. John
