Part II Basics: Technology Skills

1. ScreenshotsWhich tool will you will use for taking a screenshot?

The PrtSc button will capture a screenshot. Once Word is opened, it can be copied and pasted to a blank document, and saved either in the Picture folder, Desktop, or an external flash/hard drive as needed.

2. “Browser Navigation” A. View the “How To” videos for Parts 1 of Browser Basics. Capture a screenshot showing one of the techniques (resize the window, new tabs, new window, multiple windows side-by-side) you learned and paste it below: After pasting it, please resize it so it is a smaller image.

New Browser Technique: Multiple Windows side-by-side

Briefly describe what you did and what you like about it

I never knew that you could view more than one window at a time! I am sure I’ve seen this before – most often it seems to be with people who also have multiple screens showing the same tab. But now I can view multiple tabs at once too, simply by either clicking on the 2nd or multiple tab and dragging it to available screen area – or – by hitting Ctrl +N in order to have a new window opened! Neat!

Page 3: ggelle.files.wordpress.com  · Web view01/07/2015  · Digital Citizenship – ethics and integrity always when working with learners and building character when using technology

B. “Browser Navigation” (Part 2)View the “How To” videos for Parts 2 of Browser Basics. a. Capture a screenshot showing a new Browser technique you learned (zoom in and out, find, history) and paste it below: After pasting it, please resize it so it is a smaller image.

New Browser Technique: Find

Briefly describe what you did and what you like about it

I am thankful that most of what I viewed in Gymnastics Part 2 of the Browser WebQuests seemed quite familiar. The new pieces of learning, though, fall with the learning of Ctrl + another key to get immediate access to a tool or feature (for example, Ctrl T = new Tab – when I usually just hit the small shortcut for the new tab next to my current browser window. Ctrl +/- is used for zoom. I will use this when I am teaching this fall – however my computers at home have touch sensitivity, so I can use my figures to zoom in when needed.

My new learning with this part 2 session was with ability to FIND specific words or key information by hitting Ctrl F. All of the commands make great sense and will be easy to remember, but also, easy for me to gain confidence in trial and error when using the Ctrl button and another for quick access to tools, etc.

3. “Basic Browser Shortcuts”

My computer: I will be using a __Lenovo Notebook Computer / Tablet___________ (ex: Mac, PC, Chromebook, Surface Pro, etc.) for the majority of the work for this course.

Page 4: ggelle.files.wordpress.com  · Web view01/07/2015  · Digital Citizenship – ethics and integrity always when working with learners and building character when using technology

My favorite browser is: (ex: Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari, etc.) _____Google is what I have used most, though Chrome was visited often last year as we were prepping our own children as well as my students for the MSTEP Common Core Testing___________________________

Post a screenshot of your favorite shortcut, and briefly describe its use:

After viewing the Shortcuts PDF, I think I could easily incorporate the Ctrl + PgDn (END) key to quickly get to the end of a webpage. I think this will help when leading my students through research work, specifically searching for author, year, and work cited documentation needs.

Favorite Shortcut: Jump to the bottom of a webpage, quickly: Ctrl + EndI’m not certain how to show a screenshot of this shortcut – so I included the PDF document that lists this shortcut at the bottom of the chart.

Part III: Implementation

1. ISTE Teacher Standards

A. As you review these ISTE-T standards provide an example of at least one thing you do in your teaching. See the sample provided below and then share the your own example:

Sample

Standard : 2. Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments

Performance indicator addressed: I selected “a”.Standard 2.a. “Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity.”  My Lesson Example: I teach a math unit on geometric shapes. I have students use the digital camera to take pictures of different features or items around our school. I recently started having them edit the images to create a collage for different types of angles to post in the room.

Future Lesson: Standard 2.c.: Customize and personalize the activity to meet diverse learning styles and working strategies and abilities.

There are only two cameras available but our school is going to let students bring their own mobile devices. I’d like to customize the geometry lesson so they can bring pictures of geometric figures they take outside school and find a way to share the images to add to our lesson, like on an online bulletin board.

Briefly describe an activity or lesson that meets one of the five ISTE-T standards you teach in the table below:

ISTE Standard addressed by my activity or lesson1.Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity

Performance indicator(s) addressed:1.d. Model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students and colleagues and others in face-to-face and virtual environments

My lesson description:-Math Performance Tasks: Integrating Technology through Math with the use of Performance Tasks have created authentic real-world experiences and scenarios that drive student learning while utilizing the Engineering Design Process as well. One particular Geometry Performance Task asked students to build a home with specific shapes and dimensions. 5th graders manipulated shapes on the computer, by resizing and placing according to the architect specs.

Page 6: ggelle.files.wordpress.com  · Web view01/07/2015  · Digital Citizenship – ethics and integrity always when working with learners and building character when using technology

-Distance Learning Lab: A separate lesson where this indicator will be addressed, which I have not been as familiar with until this coming school year (my goal), is through the use of Distance Learning and visiting our district’s Distance Learning Lab to connect to virtual learning.

Future Lesson: (target and describe an additional performance indicator from that standard for a future lesson)Standard: 1.Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity1.c. Promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students’ conceptual understanding and thinking, planning and creative processes.

B. How I would rate myself based on the ISTE-Teacher Standards at this point using a 5-point Rubric:

Performance Proficiency

____ Beginning Developing Proficient Transformative

1 2 3 4 5Rubric Description

Not familiar with

Beginning awareness, have an idea of what I need to work on

Awareness, feel somewhat experienced & knowledgeable

Active Awareness, Experienced and proficient user and integrator, Very knowledgeable

Flexible Awareness, the integration of multiple tools/resources at a high level of functionality

Your score/reflection:I am looking very forward to lesson planning this school year! I am thankful

for this thorough coursework with 21T4T, and I will plan to incorporate ISTE standards, along with the required CCSS, daily, as they fit into my plans. I have the courage and resources, now, to research and integrate the ISTE standards into my regular practice.

I definitely feel I am a Developing learner in the area of integrating Technology into Education – and with each McCrel Power Walkthrough from my administrator, it seems I have never yet, received a marking indicating any use of technology in my lessons. I absolutely wanted to address that part of my evaluation, and feel that this course and my increased understanding will allow me to reach and possibly exceed expectations from our district in terms of leading students through the integration of best practice in Tech Ed.

Page 7: ggelle.files.wordpress.com  · Web view01/07/2015  · Digital Citizenship – ethics and integrity always when working with learners and building character when using technology

Through each of the Independent learning with the 21 Things I am already feeling more proficient and am confident that by the end of this Professional Development, I will be solid in the Proficent (4) category with my abilities and awareness of ISTE standards and integrating this pedagogy into practice. It will be up to me to utilize my learning regularly so I can move toward the (5) Transformative Category on this rubric.

2. Best Practice ConnectionsSelect from one of the lesson/teaching examples you provided in the ISTE-T section, or another from your teaching. Identify and give an example of three of the nine research-based “best practice” teaching and learning strategies (identified in the Framework for Instructional Planning) and a technology resource you use (or might use) in the chart below. You may find it helpful to refer to the techbestpractice site.

Brief description of what I do

Example: Setting Objectives & Providing Feedback

Google docs (or printed handout from docs template)

Word processing applications

At the beginning of each new year (7th grade) I do a quick review of math problem solving steps from 6th grade. I help them identify some learning objectives. We check progress at the end of the month with feedback and discussion. I like this example and absolutely can include that this school year with my 4th graders as we review 3rd grade concepts and especially, as we will continue to monitor our progress through personal goal setting (identifying learning objectives we need to master/ improve upon)

1 Setting Objectives & Providing Feedback

Reinforcing Effort / Providing Recognition

Summarizing/ Note Taking

Face of the Classroom Blog posts indicating specific feedback from me to intended student(s)

Communication and Collaboration Tools (software)

Until right now, I have always dreamed of and talked about my goal of wanting to have a classroom webpage with interactive learning for students and parents. Now, I will be able to reach this several year goal of mine because of the confidence and awareness I am learning from 21T4T! I intend to have a page on my Face of the Classroom for Reflective writing posts for students and teachers (myself mainly, but this will be a great way to invite Resource Room, Para-Professionals, and even Specials Teachers and our school Principal, who share my students with me, to comment on questions, suggestions, reflective learning responses, etc.

learning and knowledge. During Summer School, for example, throughout each science lesson students create charts, or use a teacher created chart to input personal and class data. Today we completed an investigation using Mexican Jumping Beans. Students developed several investigations they wanted to test and chart, and using some simple and some complex organizers we were able to chart, graph, and incorporate math concepts of Mean, Median, and Mode.

3 Assigning Homework and Practice

Printed Handouts (a bit borring…)

I’d love to try to incorporate WebQuests

Word Processing Applications

Instructional Media (this form of HW would be much more fun!)

Students routinely receive a homework packet consisting of current math practice, reading comprehension, and working with words (spelling). Homework is given and explained each Friday and is due the following Thursday throughout the school year. I utilize math worksheets from our curriculum resources, pull current learning articles for comfort and vocab familiarity, and students have spelling lists according to their strengths and weaknesses. I appreciate the resources we have at school, and feel confident the packets are a good use of time at home and continued learning.

I would love to explore and research more WebQuest opportunities and research opportunities for my students. I think this form of HW would be a great change of pace, may be expecting a lot from our district families, but this HW/technology integration may lead to increased excitement toward continued learning at home.

3. Models of Technology Integration

Review your examples in the Question #2 above (Best Practice Connections). Explore the SAMR and TPACK models and identify a strategy you use in a lesson or activity that fits one or more of these models and list it in the table provided below.

Final Reflection

Based on the resources in Basics, and your own experience, reflect on how thoughtful integration of best practice and technology can improve your instructional practice. Give some details.

I am thrilled that, through the Basics portion of 21T4T, I have newly learned about the Nine Categories of Technology:

As well as the SAMR and TPAR Models for Technology Integration:

Page 10: ggelle.files.wordpress.com  · Web view01/07/2015  · Digital Citizenship – ethics and integrity always when working with learners and building character when using technology

For this school year, I am really excited to immediately integrate technology into my weekly lesson plans. I will personalize the organizer used here in our #2. Best Practice Connections (Basics) Reflection work as the organization format for my lesson plan.

Brief description of what I do

These components, as well as the reflective components of the SAMR Tech Integration Model will help keep me focused on being a 21st Century Teacher, utilizing and incorporating technology creativity, fluidly, during my school day and throughout each week! Technology usage thus far in my career has been used to enhance student learning: substitution for writing, mostly. I am intrigued and hopeful that by the end of this course, I will be able to use technology to transform learning (lesson modification and redefinition)

“Dr. Ruben Puentedura developed the SAMR model as a way for teachers to evaluate how they are incorporating technology into their instructional practice.” (Quotation taken from Basics) With all due respect, administrative practices with Teacher Evaluation has left me feeling quite vulnerable, replaceable, unvalued (at times), and inefficient. I encounter all of these emotions without having the collaborative and leaderly discussions to help me brainstorm specific and immediate forms of improvement (per my areas of need on the evaluation), let alone time allotted for professional reflection and goal setting to help me achieve the level of efficacy I strive for. Now, however, I am proud to have these tremendous tech integration resources and websites to help guide me to more creative and innovative teaching practices and lesson development!

I have always been aware that most often classroom teachers, in my district, receive minimal ratings for use of integrating technology within the classroom. I feel comfortable knowing that much of this reflection is not personal, but rather reflects on our limited technology access for students, regularly. However, for several years now, I have wanted to improve technology usage and integration in my lessons; just didn’t know how, and didn’t have time to think deeply about this personal goal. Having the Nine Categories chart, and connecting technology with

Page 11: ggelle.files.wordpress.com  · Web view01/07/2015  · Digital Citizenship – ethics and integrity always when working with learners and building character when using technology

CITW expectations have helped me realize that I have been incorporating technology in subject area lessons, through the use of organizers. For this year, I plan to work with summarizing, giving feedback, etc with the use of an interactive blog perhaps even google docs. I would like technology to enhance learning and productivity. If I can transform my lesson plans with tech integration, I believe I can enhance critical thinking and digital learning.

When designing lesson plans ,now, I can ask myself these pertinent questions to help me reflect upon my learning design, and evaluate my use of technolgy with SAMR principles in mind:

1. What will I gain with replacing the older technology with the newer technology

2. Have I added an improvement to the task process at a fundamental level?

3. Does this modification fundamentally depend upon the new technology?

4. How is the new task uniquely made possible by the new technology?

I work hard in school. I feel proud of the plans I thoughtfully and carefully produce. Though, after reflecting on each module of 21 Things, I am about to work much harder, perhaps not harder, but rather more intentionally. I am thankful for our district vision, our extreme work ethic pushed upon all of us, from all district levels, and I believe our district is at the head of the class in terms of teaching and learning demands, truly leading to tremendous student growth and achievement. I am thankful that teachers were invited to be a part of the rigorous 21T4T course this summer.

REMEMBER: Post your document to your portfolio or provide a link in your portfolio to it.

Note: If you are taking the 21things4teachers for graduate, SCECH, or other Professional Development credit there will be additional Capstone requirements and extended assignments your instructor will tell you about.
